U410 sudden loss of power

Hi,
I recently bought a U410 which was working fine apart from a random loss of power. The machine would switch off suddenly in a number of situations (both when being used fairly heavily and when idle) and both under battery and mains power. When it switched off the machine was not excessively hot. When turning it back on the machine booted fine, had adequate battery power and did not report anything in the event logs other than an unexpected shutdown. As the machine was only a couple of weeks old, I returned it to the store and (with a bit of convincing) managed to get a refund. Since this appears to be a fairly isolated issue I bought a new U410 but unfortunately within a couple of days this one was also experiencing the same issue. I would rather fix the issue than take this one back since the U410 is otherwise a very nice machine.
After a bit of research on these support boards I found a few threads referring to different potential causes, but no definitive cause. Everything tried so far (fully updating drivers, bios, windows etc) hasn't alleviated this issue. Did any definitive cause of this issue ever get found?

hi stevejefferies,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Most intermittent shut down / power loss issues that I've encounted is due to overheating or a faulty component inside of the PC.
Here's what I would do if I was in your case:
1. Monitor the temperature of the HDD,CPU,GPU by using HWMonitor.(the Core i-series CPU has a TJ max of 100 C before the unit shuts down)
2. If there's no sign of overheating, eliminate the OS and the preloaded apps as the issue by doing a fresh OS install. If you're running Windows 7, you can get a Windows 7 ISO on this website then install all the drivers (keep windows update disabled for the meantime) and observe.
If the issue reoccurs, I recommend you contact lenovo to report the issue and have it serviced.
Regards,
neokenchi

  • Sudden loss of power, shutdown

I have a Imac 9.1, attached to a UPS and twice in the last month while doing the most trivial of things (today scrolling an internet page) the unit suddenly powered off? Just "Blink" screen black and power off. I'm not sure what it is.
My question is, is there a "systems event" log that the system captures when things like this happen which point to something that was going on right before the lights went out? Or is this merely a matter of waiting till it happens with some degree to repetitiveness that I take it in for an analysis at Apple. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, if you think it's the UPS! try going to the Website of the manufacturer, FAQ, Help, Contact Us...
The sudden loss of power may well damage your HD..My advice, don't use the UPS till you are sure of the reasons for the power outage..Use a good Anti Surge unit until then...L

  • Sudden Loss of Power... but computer works fine...

I've had my dual 1.8 for about three years now... it's not in the category of G5's that had the power recall.
I have it hooked to a Belkin UPS backup, but for the last week or so, the computer will abruptly lose power. I haven't installed any new apps or hardware for some time (new RAM about 2-3 months ago... but system profiler says it's all good).
Any thoughts as to what's going on? I've backed up all my work, similar to the peeps that built nuc fallout shelters back in the day. I'm awaiting the big one!

I have the same problem on my G5. Just randomly powers off suddenly. It happens in spurts and then stops for a while. Usually happens when I am working in or loading ProTools software...but not always. I think the power supply can't handle extra power needs or something like that... One time turning off my air conditioner seemed to help... Hard to say though since it happens randomly... FRUSTRATING!!!!! not in the list of G5's for the power supply recall... What do i do???

  • Imac sudden loss of power

My imac will suddenly lose power and wont restart unless i replug the power cord. I have had the power supply replaced but still have this problesm.

I had the same problem with iMac early 2011, which had aproblem with the power supply and the reseller in Amman did not change on the warranty. Anyway we ordered a new power supply "Part # 661-5299" from another reseller and installed it. It worked only one hour and started to loose power. And did not boot againg until the power cable was repluged.
We managed the figure out that the new power supply -changed layout- does not allow the air flow of the fans to cool it. We also managed to repair the old power supply, sinse its layout allows the air folow throuh it.
We need some one from apple to confirm or comment on this issue, this a complain on Apple, I hope to see an oficial reply from Apple

  • Sudden loss of Power

iPhone 5. Battery power off suddenly at 60% battery charge. I have already brought the phone to the apple store earlier and the diagnostic test carried out by the genius did not show any fault. Moreover my iOS was reinstalled. All this has made no improvement and it is probably worse

    Hi, Michael -
    Try a different power cord.
If you have a table lamp available, use it to confirm there's power at the strip or wall.
Also check that the voltage switch on the back of the Mac (it allows the choice of 110v or 220v) is seated in the correct position. It's a good idea to wiggle or slide it back and forth only with the Mac's power cord disconnected.
Otherwise, it sounds like the power supply has gone. Some (if not all) have a fuse inside - I imagine it's not easy to get to (I've never gone looking for it).

  • Sudden loss of power while working on battery

My MacBook Pro is suddenly shutting off while I am working on battery. The last time this happened, I had my battery fully charged, and yet, my computer completey shut off without any warning (about half an hour or so of battery use) while I was watching a slideshow of pictures. This had happened to me twice thus far.
What sort of problem am I having? Could this be from some type of virus? Any system malfunction? I am also wondering if I need to run any system check, just to be sure that my hard drive is working properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"Check Battery" indicates that the battery is failing. If it's less than a year old, you may be able to talk Apple into replacing it as defective. If it's three or more years old, it hasn't been "exercised" (used and cycled) enough during that time and has died a predictable natural death for that reason. If it's between one and three years old, it's still failing, but the reason is less clear. Replace it and you'll be back up and running normally soon.

    Hi

It works fine when permanently plugged into the mains electricity

  • Home hub 3 - Sudden loss of connection after havin...

I have been with BT for about a week now and over the last 6 days the internet has been working fine. Today I had to do some eletrical work so cut the power to the whole house, obviously this turned off the router. I did this on several occisions not really thinking as there was a few jobs that needed the eletricity being cut.
Since doing this I have had bad connection problems, the internet seems to work fine for about 10 mins then cut off for a minute them come back on again. I have done a full master reset but it still losses connectivtiy.
It could be that the line is dodgy but it seems weird that it was working completely fine and now it isnt. Rang up bt who are now monitoring the line for 24h. These are the adsl stats are below if that helps. If anyone has any suggestions on fixing the problem or the cause please let me know!

Is there anyway to tell bt that the line isnt unstable but it was infact me being stupid and turning it off?
Currenlty the stats are as shown. The nosie margin still very high and the downstreem very low. I am hoping this will change over the next few days. I am still losing connection however, have left the router doing its own thing and just using the internet when it allows me!

Sounds like you need a #1SMC Reset
    1. SMC reset
    >>Instructions to reset SMC
Disconnect other non-Apple and external hardware except (if applicable) a mouse and keyboard until your finished repairing your machine.
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc.  If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.
    Other related hardware problems (optional):
Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

    Hi,
Troubleshooting a start up script can be difficult. There are some third party programs that also keep logs of start up programs, however for Firefox this may be different.
Is Firefox a startup program? [http://www.winxptutor.com/msinfo32.htm]
Its also possible to check the Web developer tools for any scripts in a page: [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Debugger]
In the control panel there is also Administrative tools to view event logs, but this may be something a local technician can walk you through.

"My Mac was stopped suddenly by a power cut. Could this be relevant?"
    Sounds very relevant.
Do you have access to another computer with Numbers installed?
If so, do your files open properly on that computer?
If so, then the problem is your computer itself, which is best posted in a different forum.

  • Can you point me to the setting that reopens all word documents on startup after the laptop shuts down due to loss of power? I'm a mac book pro user.  Many thanks!

It'd be great if you could also advise on reopening safari windows on start up.  I'm after the setting that helps us restore everything only after shutdown due to loss of power and not all the time!  Thanks!

The option is in System Perferences on the General section (first Icone in Sys Perf) down near the bottom.
It's called "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening  apps".
But that may not be the setting your are looking for.
There is also a setting on the Shut Down and Restart windows that says "Reopen windows when logging back in".
But is you computer shutting OFF, "I Mean Really Shutting OFF", or just going into Sleep mode.
If it is really turning complete off then that setting is not saved. For that to work the computer has to be shut down or re-started properly allowing the OS to save that App state.

My problem is a sudden loss of ability to get to PSE12 Organizer when I tried to load a saved scan. Had been using the Organizer and the Editor with no problems for several hours just before that.
Can not load the Organizer from the icon at the bottom of  Editor screen, from the icon on the MacBook Air dock (OS 10.10.2),  nor from the file in applications located with Finder.
I have tried without success to access Organizer after turning off and on the scanner, turning off and on the computer, loading a fresh copy of PSE12 from the CD, and restoring default preferences.  I have searched on line for other options but not  found any.

  • Sudden loss of connection all together

I'll start off by saying hello to everyone.
We've had infinity installed for some time now. I'm talking many months, definitely more than 18. This is the first time we have encountered a sudden loss of internet connection. We have already called BT and followed all their steps but what the people at the call centre don't understand is we want to know WHY! Not the possibilities, a solid reason. I was always able to give this to our business customers when I worked first line support. We recently had a storm which I think is contributing, since going over everything many times and no joy I have wondered about the phone line. Since the loss of connection it has always got massive static interference on the line. The service updates say all is good, but I can't help but think that page is just nonsense and that it is at fault and that BT are too up themselves to admit the fault is their end.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Thank you very much in advance.

  • Old Reliable G4 mirror suddenly won't power up....YIKES!!

my trusty, G4 MDD, almost 4 years old now, never had problems, all of sudden will not power on at all when the power button is switched on....I tried resetting the button on the motherboard next to the battery (PMU?) and still nothing...
from my research, it sounds like a power supply, but is there any thing I can do at this point to at least try to get this thing powered up?
I'm not really anywhere near a mac tech, but I do have other issues
    a) in case it is a power supply and it needs to be replaced, will it affect the files on my boot drive?
    b) I do have a spare 733 Quicksilver...I had been running a separate audio drive that I'm sure I can probably install on the Quicksilver to at least retrieve my audio files, but if I remove the boot drive on the 1.25 mirror door, can that simply be installed on the Quicksilver also to retrieve some other very important stuff...
    HELP!

so regardless of whether it's the boot drive or the supplemental drive, it doesn't matter?
Correct. Either one can be installed in an enclosure and will be seen as an external.
now, if I install the old boot drive from the MDD into a firewire enclosure, can I plug that drive into my spare Quicksilver and boot from that? if so, how do I do that? (provided the drive isn't messed up)
Go ahead and try it. Connect the external device to to the QS and check System Preferences. If it is bootable, System Preferences / Startup Disk will list it. At that point you can select it as your startup drive and restart.
By the way, I suspect you already know this, the power supplies of the QS and the MDD are not interchangeable.
