U430p keyboard lights up for half second then dies

Hey guys, My IdeaPad U430p is on the fritz. Syptoms: At first, I thought it was out of battery. When I press the power button, the keyboard and power button will light up (screen is blank), but only for a half second and then it all goes blank. I charged it up, battery light on, then let it sit for a few hours without the charging cable. Again, even when charged, the same thing happens. My brother mysteriously got it to work the other day when I wasn't around, but now it is back to only turning on for half a second. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, how have you managed to fix it? Also, does anyone know what causes this?Thank you, Lauren

    I'm dying here guys.
    The build from hell continues.
I got a new heatsink tonight on my Core i7 build, threw it on, and proceeded to start. It started, but no video. Being as I had most of the parts out on a cardboard box, I moved the motherboard slightly over, and it shut off. I pressed the power buttons, and the LED's flashed, and turned off half a second later.
I pulled everything off of it, and had bare board, heatsink, and CPU. Nothing except the half second flash.
Tore everything off, CPU out, and inserted the 24 pin. Yes, it stayed on.
    Put everything back. Stayed on.
Plugged the 8 pin CPU connector in, no. Flash and die.
Looked over the pins and thought nothing was wrong. One had a bit of AS5 on the tip but carefully cleaned it off.
So the only things I can think of are:
    I killed my PSU
    I killed my mobo
    I fried the CPU
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've blown more money on this build than I wanted and I'm stuck with a brick now. I'm so frusterated right now it's beyond belief. I have never had a build go this wrong ever in 15 years.

MBP went off and won't turn on again. Charger shows full battery ( green indicator) although I know I was close to low batt befor going off. What happened???

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting attempts.  Very helpful.  Sorry, I cannot read "logs."  My eyes just glass over on those things.  Hopefully, a knowledgeable user will come along shortly to decipher for you.
I noticed from the pics that your location setting is "untitled."  Have you tried the "Automatic" setting?  Run the diagnostic test?  Results?
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.
Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer.   See these basic networking KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

  • ISight powers up for 3 seconds then dies on plug-in.  Help!

My iSight worked great for several months on my G4 Dual processor. Unfortunately, my G4 was problematic from day one and the firewire ports were always hit and miss (i.e. my Epson 2450 scanner would not be recognized on Firewire... and eventually my DV camera would no longer be recognized as well as external hard drives). Recently the last straw was when my iSight stopped working.
What would happen is I plug it into a firewire port, the green LED on top of the camera lights, the camera makes that "buzz" sound like it is initializing... and then the light goes off after about 4 seconds. A look at INFO shows nothing connected to the firewire bus and iChat video options say no camera connected.
So.... deciding to put the G4 to rest after 4 years, I go to the Apple store and buy a Mac Mini Duo. The Genius guy reset the firewire firmware and was then able to get the ports to work again on my G4.
Took the G4 home and migrated everything over to my new Mac Mini via the Firewire port.
Plug in my iSight to the Mac Mini and the problem STILL exists with the camera. ***?!?
Anyone have any thoughts on this? is the iSight just dead??
    TIA!
    Paul

    Hi John,
Mostly I am out of direct ideas.
EZ Jim has created this FAQ which is now on my web site.
It links to several Apple Docs that maybe of some help.
It does, of course, point out the basics that I have already suggested.

  • T60 boots for 3 seconds then dies

    Problem:
When I try to boot my T60 it shows the usual stuff on the screen for about 3 seconds after I press the power button, then it dies.  This situation came out of nowhere, overnight.
The behavior is exactly the same if I try WITHOUT the battery inserted. Should the T60 not be able to boot without battery inserted?
    Led indicators:
When it is off WITH the battery inserted, it shows battery led green and AC power led green. All other leds off.
When it is off WITHOUT the battery insterted, it shows the AC power led green only.
... based on the User Manual, I am not really sure what to make of this.
    What?
Could this be my battery?  Could it be the AC adaptor?  Any ideas?
(My battery is not affected by the recall)
    Mads

    Welcome to the forum!
Can you borrow a different AC adapter and test with it?
If you leave the machine plugged in, and off, is the battery light on?
I'm smelling a motherboard problem here. If your machine is still under warranty, send it in for service.
BTW, your machine should boot with no battery installed, no questions asked.
Good luck and let us know.
    Cheers,

  • After falling red led for 3 seconds then dead

    Hi,
after falling on the floor my blackberry 8800 will not start anymore..
When I insert battery or charger cable the red led lights up for 3 seconds then turns back off but the device is dead...it the anything I can do?
Iv found other topic's talking about red flashing light and firmware reload, is this the same thing?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hey mau_mau,
You can try to reload your operating system but most likely all your data will be lost.
You can try to see if the device will connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to back up data, but there is no guarantee it will be able to do so.
You can consult article KB11320 for instructions on how to do the load.
If you need further technical assistance, you can contact your wireless service provider.
Thanks and have a great day!

  • IPhone display lights up for half a second...

My new iPhone 4 does the same my old iPhone 3GS did. Sometimes when I push the slepp/wake button to wake it up, the display lights up for half a second and goes dark again. This always happens twice. Only when I push it the third time, the display stays on. Since it's a brand new iPhone 4 and the old iPhone 3GS did the same, it must be software related. I've had it with iOS 4.2.1 and iOS 4.3. Does anyone know this phenomenon too?

I get that occasionally. I've always assumed it was to do with the proxy sensor and the location of my paws on the device at the time. It's not consistent and rare occurrence.
Also, i use the Otterbox cover for it. I think it's design allows buildup of dust on the proxy and also could be contributing to the same theoretical cause.

my imac (intel core i5, OS 10.10.1) shuts down every night and will not "wake up" next morning -- it never used to do that -- if I hold down the start button more than twice for many seconds, then it will finally boot up and works fine all day – I’ve tried shutting it down and unplugging it, and that does not work -- I’ve run disk utilities checked permissions, and run anti-virus and get no adverse results – I cannot figure out what is different that causes this problem

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
    Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Some pictures in I-Photo seem to be corrupted. When I click on them, the photo comes up for a second, then the picture turns black with a white fuzzy circle inside it and what looks like an explanation mark. Some older, some newer,  no common thread.

Some pictures in I-Photo seem to be corrupted. When I click on them, they come up for a second, then turn black with a white circle in the middle and what looks like an explanation mark. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to the photos that are a problem, some older ones, some newer, some albums have none, some albums have a lot.
    Thanks,

time to time (when I have a chance), I will go to Finder, bring up ALL Images and start going through them to label them (before I put a label on them, they are simply listed as 123 jpg, 124 jpg etc.).
You're damaging the Library doing that, and that's the cause of your problem.
Never, ever, ever use the  All Images search and work on items in yoyr iPhoto Library. They must only be accessed via the iPhoto window.
Restroe from abck up or try rebuild the Library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Next: You need to learn how to use iPhoto. There's no need to be dragging things to the desktop:
For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:

  • X-Grid Works for one second then says it's finished

OK, so when I use the command line to submit an X-Grid job, it submits it, but it runs for one second then returns that it's finished. I look at the X-Grid Admin utility which is connected to my X-Serve, and it shows the job, shows that it's completed, and shows that it ran for one second... It doesn't matter what job I send to it...
    Here's the command I used:
    "xgrid -h rtsp.jnetcast.net -p <password hidden> -job submit catmovie /Use
    rs/chris/Public/xgrid/movie.mov /Users/chris/Public/xgrid/movie2.mov -mp4 -o /U
    sers/chris/Public/xgrid/movieout.mp4"
The path that all of those files are in has RW privileges for all users, so it's not that...
Anyone know how to get it to work?

Sorry, I don't have an answer - but there is an actual xgrid discussion board. You probably have a much better chance of finding an xgrid guru there than here.

  • Monitor works for one second, then blank

I have been reading many of the post people have put down about monitors and mac mini's, however can't find anyone with my problem.
I bought a mac mini and a cheap monitor from PC world, a Xerox 17" TFT, thinking that it would work fine. However when I connected them up using the DVI cable, at start up the monitor works for a second then blank. Turning it off and back on again brings the image back but again for just a second. This is annoying in that the mac mini is still in its welcome first run making it difficult to get beyond it to mess around with the monitor settings given a window of a second each time.
There was an adaptor that came with the monitor, but to use that I would have to plug that adaptor into the macs DVI adaptor as well, something I tryed but no luck, in fact no image at all.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I've had this problem too, resetting the PMU and PRAM usually helps:
