U510 really using Hybrid Drive?

Hi there,
Still haven't seen my post hit about why the U510 uses the SATA disk for booting and OS files.  I've dug into the Hybrid+SSD on the U510 but it doesn't appear to be a true hybrid drive that migrates higher value data to the SSD from the slower SATA disk over tim.  The reason for thinking this is Windows 8 sees two discrete drives while true hybrids are supposed to appear as one drive.  Anyway, I'm looking for a reason to not redo my U510 or return it for the G780 that has a larger screen and much faster processor.
Thanks,
-chris

Hi mate
Welcome to the forums
Before proceeding further, could you please post a snip of your disk management?
By the way, u510 is an ultrabook. The sole purpose of msata in an ultrabook is caching(Intel rapid start and smart response technology) and that is set up in everyy ultrabook.

  • Solid State Hybrid Drive in 15" MBP?

I'm considering a 15" MBP...I was looking at the 500GB SSD option from the Apple Store, but $1300 is a bit too much. I was browsing around on OWC, looking for a cheaper deal, when I came across the Seagate Momentus XT, which is apparently a hybrid SSD/HDD. Has anyone had any experience with this device?
In general are SSDs worth the extra money over a 7200 RPM HDD in an MBP (taking into account battery life, seek times, spin-up or equivalent times, overall performance, etc)?
Edit: I do intend to get a system with a low-end HDD, and swap it out for the Seagate...or have it done by OWC or something. Then again, I don't use optical media much, at all, so maybe I'll use that drive...is the SuperDrive in the MBPs an ATA or SATA drive?

    Hi musicwind95,
I've been using the the smallest one since they were available - 250GB @ 7200 RPM. They all have a 4GB SSD component so I figured I'd get the cheapest one, for fear that the drive concept was junk. The 500GB model is actually $20 less at NewEgg (by the way).
Was there any difficulty in installing the drive?
It's a nice drive, the 4GB and "active" memory controller it uses to manage the SSD works pretty well. I've definitely notice some improvements in application loading. But I must say that the seek times have been pretty negligible, especially because I routinely work with larger files that vary every day. I suppose if I worked with the same set of files on a daily basis and they were all pretty tiny (less than a couple of MBs), I'd probably notice a difference.
What's the effect on boot time? My main speed concerns are boot time and app loading times...I've never really complained about opening documents, and for the most part the documents that programs work with behind the scenes (plists, config files, etc.) are pretty small anyway.
The optical drives in the newer machines are SATA. I believe the Late 2008 17" MacBook Pro was the last to use Ultra ATA/100 for the optical drive.
Thanks. Any info on the effect on battery life with two hard drives inside?

  • I want to install hybrid drive in Macbook pro. I bought my Mac book with lion and am now running mountain lion. I was told I needed install disk to set up new drive before restoring from my time capsule. Is this correct and if so how do I get disk osx10?

I purchased a Mac book Pro in Aug 2012 with lion and have upgraded to mountain lion. I currently am looking to install the segate 750 gig hybrid drive. I watching video I shows me needing a OSX 10 disk to boot off of when the new disk is in and the use time capsule to restore system from back up drive to new hybrid. Hope I got this correct so far. that being said my Mac Book did not come with a disk therefore is one available, when I get to point of restoring from back up with it be the same mountain lion system I had. Sorr if this sounds redudant.. Thank you in advance

Connect the new hybrid drive to your MBP.  Start up your MBP holding the OPTION key, the two HDD icons will appear.  Select the 'restore' icon on the right.  When you get to the menu where you have 4 options, select Disk Utility.  Format the drive and then you can use the option of restoring it from Time Machine.
    Ciao.

  • Screen flickering and system freezes when using Nouveau driver.

I'm testing the Nouveau driver on my computer, I really want to keep this driver installed because it makes XFCE to use less resources than the Nvidia proprietary driver. But when I start some apps like firefox or make changes to the desktop, the system stop responding and then the screen breaks.
I can't use the computer in that state so I force a shutdown.
I don't know how to see what is going wrong, because the proprietary driver don't give me these problems, I don't get any errors at dmesg log and Xorg log don't have any helpful information.

I got again a total system freeze today when I wanted to launch firefox using only the openbox menu, without wbar running.
So I decided to try now the 'nouveau.noaccel=1' kernel command line parameter, and to use again wbar for my frequently used applis.
In the Xorg log, the differences are:
    without 'nouveau.noaccel=1'

  • Can't resize partition after upgrading to Yosemite (using SSD drive)

I upgraded to 10.10 and using SSD drive now. When I was using OS X 10.8.5, I could freely resize partition but not anymore. I guess because of the SSD drive and the new version of OS X, and Logical Volume Group could be involved. I don't want to waste 80 GB of SSD drive so really looking for a solution now. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I had to go back to my old snow leopard install DVD, use the disk utility on that to repartition the drive. I made 2 partitions, installed Snow Leopard on one, used that to install Yosemite on the other partition and trashed the snow leopard install.
I haven't yet tried the Yosemite USB install method which would have probably been faster as I could have avoided installing SL.

  • Using network drive with time machine.  IS IT POSSIBLE?

There are lots of discussion on using network drives with time machine. I have not been able to make them work. Could somebody tell me if this is possible

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or USB drives connected to an Airport Extreme, or a drive on a Mac running Leopard.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
    1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
    2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
    3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Again, even if it works today, tomorrow is another day . . .

  • I am looking to add a hybrid drive or SSD drive to my Imac 27" 2010. What can you recommend?

I have a 2.8 Ghz i5 with 8 GB Ram and 1 TB HDD and was a bit disappointed about the speed. My 2007 24" 2.8 c2d iMac starts up faster than this new used 2010 i5. In order to make start up time faster and also start apps faster I thought of adding a hybrid drive. The Apple shop in town can install it for me, but I would need to know what would be a good option.
    Any advice is appreciated.

Some option here, adding an SSD should make it a Hybrid drive in 10.8.2...

  • System won't boot. Could really use some help here.

I have the K8T-Neo FISR2 mobo. When I set up the system, the SATA drive was set up as drive F: (onto which I installed Windows XP Home). I added a 2nd SATA drive later, and it became C:. Both drives are plugged into the Promise SATA ports. The system has been running fine for about a year now.
I was having a problem with a program not running properly. I stopped the process and tried to restart it, but it didn't work. It was a program that drives my Logitech gaming keyboard (with LCD screen). After I rebooted, the system would load windows, then after Windows was loaded, it would load up a program when I went into it and crash. It looked like it would crash on PXHELP.DLL (something like that). I booted up into safe mode, renamed the file so it wouldn't load, and now it won't boot at all. It starts to show the Windows logo and then instantly reboots. I can't even get into Safe Mode as it does the same thing.
I tried booting from an XP CD to do a repair, but when it boots, it doesn't see the hard drives. I downloaded the Promise drivers, put them onto a floppy, and load them as Windows is booting from the CD. It seems to load the drivers, but when I choose to do a repair (or even a new install), Windows comes back and tells me that I have no hard drives attached to the computer. I just can't seem to get Windows to see those hard drives!
I could really use some advice here......

Try swapping the Drive Cables. You may have one that is not engaging as well as it should.
When I let the PC boot up like normal (without booting from the CD), it sees the drives and Windows tries to load, so I don't think it's the cables. I'll make sure they're reset, but I really don't think that's it.

  • Running two Eurotherm 3216 temperature controllers using the driver available from Labview

    Hi All,
I am trying to control two Eurotherm 3216 temperature controllers using the driver provided by NI at http://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niid_web_display.download_page?p_id_guid=7F14CDCB24923797E04400144F1EF8.... Specifically, I am using the "Temperature Control Monitoring" example.
I have been able to operate a single temperature controller using this code. However, I need to operate two controllers, and I havent been able to modify the code appropriately to do it.
I initially tried just repoducing the entire code and running it but that provides me with an error. However, if I run the code while using "highlight execution" it works just as I need it to...except to slowly for my purpose.
If anyone has any insight as to how I may run both controllers, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks

    Here something’s to try.
    1)      Make sure both controllers have RS485 comms modules installed
    2)      Connect both controllers in Daisy Chain configuration using the EIA485 instructions from Page 16 of the Manual you mentioned.
    3)      Ensure both the KD458 and the 3216 controllers have identical  Comms configurations. ie Baud Rate, Parity etc
    4)      Verify your setup:  In the "Temperature Control Monitoring" example” change the Unit Address, Baud Rate, Parity and Break Length  to match the 1st controllers values. Verify that you can communicate with the 1st controller.
    5)      Using the Same "Temperature Control Monitoring" example”, NOT a second copy, change the Unit Address, Baud Rate, Parity and Break Length to match the 2nd controllers values. Verify that you can communicate with the 2nd controller.
Comms problems are difficult to fault find so be methodical and you will succeed.

  • Can I add a 3rd party SSD to a dv7 that has the 750GB Hybrid drive?

I have been given contradictory answers from 2 different HP sales reps.
I am looking to purchase a dv7 with a single storage drive, and will at some later time like to add a second storage drive to the empty bay. One rep told me that both the dv6 and dv7 have 2 empty bays, and I am nearly certain this is incorrect as I've read that people were removing the optical drives of their dv6 in order to add a second disk storage drive. I was also told that if I purchase the laptop with the hybrid drive, I would NOT be able to add a SSD later on down the road because of incompatibility. Another rep told me that if I started with the hybrid drive, I COULD add a second storage drive, in the form of either a SSD or HDD.
I realize that when trying to customize the laptop, it won't allow me to choose both the 750GB hybrid AND the 32GB SSD together, as it forces me to choose either the hybrid alone, or the regular HDD and the 32GB SSD...so perhaps there is some truth to a hybrid and SSD not being able to function together properly???
So my question remains, if I customize a dv7 with only the 750GB Hybrid drive, could I later add a 3rd party SSD without issues?

The hybrid drive is physically just a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive and will leave a bay open. The 32 gig ssd is an mSATA module and is located far away from the hard drives so even if one is present it should not block use of a second hard drive. Here is the most recent dv7 manual. Look at pages 47 and 70.
    Manual
I believe as long as you have only one 2.5 inch standard SATA drive the second hard drive bay is available for an additional drive. You may need a caddy and cable, however.
What exact model of the dv7 are you looking to purchase? This would help answer more definitely I think. The dv6 definitely does not have 2 hard drive bays, just the dv7.

  • Mac pro hybrid drive

    Hi there guys,
My Mac pro 1.1 2007 boot times are relativly slow, and was considering a "seagate 1tb hybrid hard drive". My questions are:
    1) Has anybody put in a hybrid hard drive into a mac pro 1.1 2007? What were the results?
    2) Will it work correctly?
    3) Does the mac contain a function to COMPLETELY COPY my main hard drive (With Mac OSX) to the hybrid drive if i get one, then if i replaced the old hard drive with the hybrid, would it work fine?
I want a SSHD because they are significantly cheaper than SSD, and have a large space which i want. I DONT have much money to spend, hence i am not buying a SSD. With this hybrid, my boot times should also rapidly increase correct? As the OS will go onto the solid state part ?
please if you HAVE EXPERIENCE or know someone who has done it or are CONFIDENT WITH THE RESULTS, please, please anyswer my questions!!
    Thanks a lot guys!

By far the biggest payback (once you have enough RAM) for a Mac that supports multiple drives is to establish a Boot Drive, with only the System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including Paging/Swap. User files are moved off to another drive.
This alleviates the "traffic jam" that is inherent with everything on the Boot drive.
If that drive (which can be surprisingly small) is a fast drive, it speeds up everything. If it is a low-latency SSD, that speeds things up even more. I have been running a Server-attached Mac Pro on an SSD as small as 30GB, but that is too small for most users. 128GB is plenty if user files are moved off.
The large space is on the drive in the next slot, and that is where your User files are located.
SSDs are still too expensive to be used to store everything.

  • T440s re-imaged with 8.1 Pro VL - hybrid drive?

We started buying the T440s as one of our business laptops. How can I get th hybrid drive stuff to work with a re-image? I installed the Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers from http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds032146 but the system does not seem to be seeing the drives properly. And if I boot into the BIOS, there are no options to set or even see the settings of regarding RAID, etc.

    1. You cannot use the Lenovo external drive, because you already have a built-in SuperDrive. Get your internal drive fixed.
    2. Your Mac does not support EFI Boot, because it is a PreUEFI model based on How to identify MacBook Pro models - Apple Support and the following list. If you force it with EFI boot, some of your hardware GPU/Audio will not work properly.

  • I can't save the data from an 8753SE VNA using the driver from NI

    Hi,
I'm using the labview 8.0 to control an 8753SE vector network analyzer (VNA). The VNA is supposed to be controlled using a driver from NI; however, I couldn't do that using the vi files from the driver. I'm using a GPIB cable from Agilent (http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/product.jspx?nid=-34195.426029.00&cc=US&lc=eng) to connect the VNA to my PC. The GPIB cable is configured using Agilent IO libraries suite 15.5. Do you I need to use MAX to check if my PC is talking to my VNA? and if yes, how can I do that? If no, do you suggest any solutions to this dilemma?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ahmad

    Ahmad,
Did you try to establish connection to the VNA using Agilents connection expert which you downloaded with the IO libraries? To use the NI drivers I'm guessing you will be using NI-VISA. (Unless the driver is really old. I don't have this hardware and haven't downloaded that driver). If you have established a connection you must enter the correct address in the VISA resource for the initialization function. Wire your error lines to an indicator so you can see if anything goes wrong. See this thread for some issues other folks fixed.
    Hope this helps.
Note: you should have posted this to the Instrument Control board. This board is for NI instruments.

  • Use hard drives on 2 old pc's ?

Is there a way for me to hook up my iBook to two old pc towers to use their hard drives for storage?

    Well,
Can running a tower, that is in sleep mode most of the time really use that much electricity when compared to all the ac, lights, tv, etc that are running in the house?
Too much trouble and chance for messing things up in taking out drives.
The towers are just sitting upstairs in one of my rooms, the software is too outdated to be of much use, I already have external drives hooked up to my downstairs computer, I just wanted the extra security of having another place to store important data. Throwing out the computers just adds to the mounds of garbage in the world. Don't see, in the scale of things, how I am being wasteful making use of the two towers sitting in my upstairs room.

  • IdeaPad Y570 - hybrid drive dual-boot ? ( Win 7 + Debian )

Hello, I've tried to find specific information but none was found so I've made this topic.
    My question is.
Is it possible to dualboot on Y570 with hybrid drive (SSD 32GB + 750GB HDD)?
I've have my Windows 7 already installed and used. I have 2 partitions - C (the biggest 690GB - Win installed + data) and D (from lenovo - drivers, utilities...)
I haven't change any setting with partitions.
I would love to split the biggest drive C into 2 smallers - one with Win 7 another with Debian installed.
I prefer NOT to install Win 7 again. I just want to create new partition, install Debian on it and have dual-boot system. I don't need One Key recovery system.
Another question is, how will the SSD work with Debian? If not, I can live through that, but I would prefer if it works at least for Win 7, just like now.
I've read that Optimus is not working under Linux. Okay, no problem, but can the external graphic card be disabled at least in Linux?
To sum up, my goal is to have Linux without formating drive / without reinstalling Win 7. Is it even possible?
It's pretty complex question and thanks for anserws.

ratchet wrote:II am able to install and run arch by installing grub to the mbr. when I do this, though, I cannot boot windows. (the windows section of grub menu.lst is uncommented and points toward hda0,0. I have tried hda 0,1 as well).
Is this a typo in your post or how it was in menu.lst? Surely it should be hd0,0 and not hda0,0? The entry I have in my menu.lst is as follows:
    # (2) Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
    What was yours?
