U52F won't start up correctly
Bought this a few weeks ago and the following problem happens intermittently, sometimes several times in a row before it will come up correctly. Restart doesn't help, have to shut down / start up.
After sign on, and Welcome and Preparing your desktop, I get:
c:\\windows\system32\config\systemprofile\desktop refers to a location that is unavailable.
When I click OK, I just get the Recycle Bin on the desktop and can't see any of my files in the Document library.
I'm about to return it, but thought I'd try some forums.
System restores restore a computer to exactly the same as it was when the backup was made, meaning you will loss any new software or files you have gotten since the backup was made.

Won't start up correctly, but gets to finder
Ok so after having read a bunch of forums i thought i would throw up my problem since it seems a little different than most i have seen thus far.
My iBook starts correctly, but once it gets to the finder nothing works, the dock loads and all of the images on my desktop do, but if i move the cursor over the dock it just spins for eternity. the images that load on desktop are also missing around half of the letters in their names, some are missing the image. I cannot do a single thing from the desktop, cannot click on anything or use any commands.
Have ran the hardware tests disc and everything came up peachy, so wondering if i am going to have to reinstall the OS? Any help would be appreciated, even if its just a link to what could be a possible solution to this problem. Thanks
iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)How much free disk space do you have? If it is less than 5%-10% of your total drive space that could be causing problems as you have described. If that is the case you will need to remove some things from your drive to create enough space for OS X to function properly.
Also, have you done any routine maintenance on your iBook? There is some information on what to do here;

My G5 won't start up correctly!
Please someone help me. I will start up my G5 and I hear the chime but at that point my CRD monitors never come on. The lights on my USB hub don't light up, either. Then my G5 fans rev up really high. I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut off, then after waiting around 10 seconds I'll try to turn it on again. After several times of repeating this process, my monitors finally kick on, the USB hub lights up and all is fine for the rest of the day. But it's really aggravating having to do this up to five times to get things going. It's like the G5 isn't communicating to the monitors or the USB hub.
Could this be a motherboard issue? It shouldn't be a power issue, as the only thing plugged into my battery backup APC is the tower itself. I'm at a loss here... Thanks in advance for any ideas.

G5 Mac OS X (10.4.7)I've had this same problem. I just lived with it for several months, then switched to using my Powerbook and sort of forgot about it. When I went back to using the G5 my Adobe CS2 programs mysteriously stopped responding when I tried to open them. Thinking it was a software issue, I contacted Adobe and tried several things, none of which worked. Then they told me to start in safe mode; when I did, I had a similar problem to the one I had had a few months back. The only difference was, during earlier startup problems the display never came on and the computer just revved until I hit the power button, but while starting in safe mode the display would come on, the computer would rev up, and everything would freeze at the gray apple.
So I repaired permissions, reset the SMU/PMU and PRAM, still no luck starting in safe mode. I started to run the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode, thinking it might be a sporadic problem. Once it got to the memory, the drive revved up and the system stopped responding. I turned it off with the power button after waiting awhile and ran the test again with the same result.
If there is a problen with the memory, I don't understand why I'm not getting an error message. Since the computer just stops responding I guess I have to assume there's a problem with the memory, but I'm afraid I'm out of my league. Is this something that I should take in to a service center?

Macbook Pro won't start up correctly
I turned on my computer this morning and it made the start up sound,but is stuck at loading the login screen it just goes to a blue screen with the loading icon at the bottom and wont do anything from there.
The exact same thing happened to me today. I rebooted my MBP and it's just hung at the screen with the blue progess indicator which says "Starting Mac OS X". The progress indicator is "full", but it hasn't progressed to the login screen. I tried booting up in Safe Mode, but it does the same thing.

I deleted my extensions manager and now my Mac won't start up. Please Help!!
I have an IMac, 24" model, running OS X. For the past several days, little warning windows have been popping up with this annoying beep, telling me that my computer was infected with various viruses. 4, to be exact. Also, while on the internet, random pop-up windows have appeared, so I thought I did have a virus. So, to correct the matter (or attempt to), I deleted my preferences folder from the system folder, as well as the extensions manager.
Now, the computer won't start up past the white logo screen with the turning gear thingy. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and starting in safe mode, and safe mode with the progress screen, and even something there while holding the option key (that one gave me an icon of my HD, but clicking on it took me back to an endless wait on the white screen). I've tried starting from the disk that came with the computer (I held the C key) but not only doesn't the computer start from the disk, it spits the disk out. I don't understand. The computer was fine until I deleted the ext. mgr and preferences, so it can't be that the computer went bad or something.
I don't know what else to do here. I do have an extended service warranty with Best Buy, but I wanted to see if there was some way to fix this before hauling this thing off to the store. Any suggestions? I'm desperate here, because anything and everything I've tried (based on all the try-this and try-thats I found on the internet), nothing has worked.

Deleting the System/Library/extensions folder and the associated manager removed most of the functionality from your OS.
And all to get rid of what sounds like the MacDefender trojan or a variant.

You may have a slim chance of recovering if it will still boot in Target Disc Mode; in which case you can use another Mac to install the system remotely.
And I doubt your warranty with Best Buy is going to cover user "error."

Following an unplanned hard restart of our server (Mac OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.2.2), the password service won't start, so our staff can't log into mail, calendars or file sharing.
When I launch Open Directory, the main window has the message "Unable to load replica list", then it switches itself off after a minute or so.
I've looked at the certificates in Server and they have the green tick so presumably are OK.
DNS is working OK and running the command "sudo changeip -checkhostname" reports success.
Here's the section of log that repeats every few seconds as PasswordService repeatedly starts up and exits:

I have backups (both Time Machine and clones of the hard drive) that I could use to restore the corrupted bit of the configuration, if necessary, but I don't know what to restore.Many Open Directory problems can be resolved by taking the following steps. Test after each one, and back up all data before making any changes.
1. The OD master must have a static IP address on the local network, not a dynamic address. It must not be connected to the same network with more than one interface; e.g., Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
2. You must have a working DNS service, and the server's hostname must match its fully-qualified domain name. To confirm, select the server by name in the sidebar of the Server application window, then select the Overview tab. Click the Edit button on the Host Name line. On the Accessing your Server sheet, Domain Name should be selected. Change the Host Name, if necessary. The server must have at least a three-level name (e.g. "server.yourdomain.com"), and the name must not be in the ".local" top-level domain, which is reserved for Bonjour.
3. The primary DNS server used by the server must be itself, unless you're using another server for internal DNS. The only DNS server set on the clients should be the internal one, which they should get from DHCP if applicable.
4. If you have accounts with network home directories, make sure the URL's are correct in the user settings. A return status of 45 from the authorizationhost daemon in the log may mean that the URL for mounting the home directory was not updated after a change in the hostname.
5. Only if you're still running Mavericks server, follow these instructions to rebuild the Kerberos configuration on the server.
6. If you use authenticated binding, check the validity of the master's certificate. The common name must match the hostname and domain name. Deselecting and then reselecting the certificate in Server.app has been reported to have an effect in some cases. Otherwise delete all certificates and create new ones.
7. Unbind and then rebind the clients in the Users & Groups preference pane. Use the fully-qualified domain name of the master.
8. Reboot the master and the clients.
9. Don't log in to the server with a network user's account.
10. Disable any internal firewalls in use, including third-party "security" software.
11. If you've created any replica servers, delete them.
12. If OD has only recently stopped working when it was working before, you may be able to restore it from the automatic backup in /var/db/backups, or from a Time Machine snapshot of that backup.
13. As a last resort, export all OD users. In the Open Directory pane of Server, delete the OD server. Then recreate it and import the users. Ensure that the UID's are in the 1001+ range.
If you get this far without solving the problem, then you'll need to examine the logs in the Open Directory section of the log list in the Server app, and also the system log on the clients. -
Zen Nano Plus WON'T START / RECOVERY / RES
Hello ZNP friends and fellow victims of frustration,
I have the GB Zen Nano Plus and a Windows XP operating system. My Zen is just over 3 months old, and a few days ago I started having the "stuck on Logo or hour glass (building library) problem". Like many of you, it has frustrated me beyond belief in my attempts to correct it. I'm certainly not a computer whiz, but I'm fairly good at following clear, numbered, valid instructions. I have tried many of the offered cures for this problem as provided in the discussion forum. None have worked for me.
I have just stumbled onto/into the fix for the WON'T START / RECOVERY / RESCUE problem. At least, I hope it lasts. The bad news is that I don't know or remember the steps for the cure. The good news is that the problem can be fixed. In the frustration of trying a million variations on the steps offered in the discussion area, I happened to fix my nano plus. I was becoming like a hyper zealot playing a slot machine.
What I do remember is this:
) I did download the application ZenNanoPlus_PCFW_LF___0 and install it, and put an icon on my desktop so I could activate it easily.
2) I did double click it to call it up.
3) I attached my nano plus via USB to the computer. I don't remember if I had to do that before or after bringing up the above application. (You may have to try both.)
4) I did leave the battery out of the nano plus during this operation.
5) I was required to reformat the nano plus which eliminated anything on it. When the instruction came on to reformat, it said "... area" so I was worried that the reformat might include more than the device itself but it didn't.
6) Then I loaded a song, disconnected the device from the computer, put in a battery, and it started fine.
What a task that whole process was! Of course I'm not telling you anything new. I was tempted to just get on with life, but then I thought I should really share this with those of you who have been in the trenches...to let you know that a cure is possible.
Creative should really have a clear set of instructions by now for fixing this problem.

BuckHave you updated the firmware? this could be the major cause. Also, MP3 has far fewer kinks as a uni'versal format than WMA. If possible, I highly suggest using MP3 on MP3 players.

[solved] xorg proglem - won't start, but no error
Hi folks!
I'm new to Arch, my first installation, but I used to use Gentoo in the past. Got a problem with making X to run. I followed the guide from the wiki, but I didn't manage it to work.
I'm using nVidia drivers from 173xx branch (GF 5900XT). Hal is working properly, I hope - /etc/rc.d/restart successes w\o errors.
At first, I tried to run X without xorg.conf and it complained about missing 'nv' and 'vesa' (i hope) modules. Then, after running nvidia-configure (/etc/X11/xorg.conf was successfully created) and startx - screen blanks (no nVidia logo shown) and after ~3 seconds it comes back with massage "waiting for X server to shut down". In /var/log/Xorg.0.log there were no lines starting with (EE).
Then I tried to configure X with "X -configure". After making new config and replacing the older one at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and running X with command startx (as user), it complained about missing type1 and truetype modules ((EE) lines as far as I remember). After installing missing packages/modules:

it still won't start. Screen blanks, no nVidia logo shown, and later comes back with well known screen ( usual text... look over /var/log/Xorg.0.log for more details...). Only message after default text id "waiting for X server to shut down", with no (WW) nor (EE) lines above.

Any idea? To me, it looks like nvidia driver bug or some xorg bug (or maybe just a misconfiguration)
In ~/.xinitrc stays only "exec startfluxbox", but even with empty file, situation is the same.

ITunes won't start up when connecting iPhone
My wife has been having this trouble for awhile, and now I started having the same trouble too. She has an iMac G5 running latest versions of Leopard and iTunes. I have a Power Mac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet model) running the latest version of Tiger and iTunes I also have a USB 2.0 PCI card which has already been tested and is operating properly. Both of our iPhones are the original model running iPhone 2.0, but this problem was happening on her setup before the 2.0/MobileMe fiasco.
Basically, iTunes won't start on her machine when she sets her iPhone into the iPhone Dock, even though it does show that it is charging. When she clicks iTunes, it syncs new data from her iMac to her iphone, but new data on her iPhone doesn't transfer to her iMac (remember, this is BEFORE the MobileMe/2.0 update). I've tried different sync cables, plugging it in to different USB ports, and always it's the same- it may work properly when I unplug the cable and plug it back in again, but after I remove the iPhone from its dock and set it back in, it malfunctions the same as I just described. It initiates a sync if iTunes is running, but not if iTunes is shut down. The crazy thing is, her syncing was working perfectly both ways until about two months before the MobileMe/2.0 switch, so I know it has nothing to do with that.
Today, my Power Mac and iPhone started displaying the same symptoms, but with a twist- I put my iPhone into its cradle, and nothing- no charging screen and tone, no syncing startup, nothing. I turn iTunes off, pull the iPhone out of the cradle, and set it back in again- nothing. iTunes won't even start up; and when I start it up myself, it still doesn't recognize the iPhone is there. I plug the iPhone into a wall charger using the same cable I sync with, and it starts charging with no problems. I plug my iPhone cradle back into my external USB hub, connected to one of the USB 1.1 ports, and the syncing/charging works flawlessly. The weird thing is, my 4th Generation iPod Photo is on a different dock with a different cable, plugged into the same USB 2.0 card, and iTunes starts and syncs with no problems with that iPod every time.
I've taken my wife's iMac, her iPhone, and her iPhone dock and cable in to the Apple Store's Genius Bar, but they weren't able to figure out the problem. They tried to redirect the syncing issues by trying to demonstrate iPhone 2.0's wireless push/pull capabilities, but they couldn't get that to work properly, even though all the settings on the imac and the iPhone were correct. All they could suggest was that I must have had a "bad upgrade" when I upgraded to Leopard (6 months ago?!?), and that I should try an "Archive and Install" of Leopard again to see if that sorts out the issue- something I do not really have the time to do (and my wife can't really be without her Mac for that long since she uses it for work).
I see a lot of similar issues on Apple's iPhone support pages with iTunes not recognizing iPhones when they're plugged in, or not charging when plugged in, etc. I've spent a lot of money on our Macs and our iPhones based on the idea (from Apple's own marketing) that Apple's products "just work". And darn it, with all the money I've invested into these products I just want them to WORK- EVERY TIME, without fail! These are the kind of problems I left behind in the Windows world, and I don't want their ugly heads to surface here too.AND ALSO I TOTALLY UNINSTALLED ANY OF MY

If you are sure you disabled your AV/antispy and you get the flash of a licence it sounds like you may have a malware infection. Look out for posts by b noir and get hold of ewido - its a free AV programme - google and you should find.

Here's what the recovery looks like. You have 5 options to help you. The Dos option can really help if you are familiar with Dos. In Dos you can do a chkdsk---sfc /scannow--- and a whole lot more. Start with the Repair option first and work your way down.

ITunes kept freezing and now it won't start at all
It all started when I downloaded an iTune U class that contained a lot of videos and chose to download all old episodes. It turned out there so many that it would take 25 hours. I tried to abort the downloads, but apparently that messed something up.
First iTunes started up normally, tried to download "83 items" and then started to freeze up after a minute. I had to shut it down via the Task Manager.
Then it got worse, and now it won't start at all. After I click on the icon to open iTunes (I have Windows 8) the screen turns white, the blue wheel spins and nothing happens. When I hold the cursor over the iTunes icon in the task bar I can see two preview tiles (one for Download and one for iTunes itself), but both are blank (all white) and nothing happens - the blue wheel will spin forever. What do I do?
I do have the latest version of iTunes. If I uninstall and reinstall iTunes, will that solve the problem? And will the content of my library still be there? Thanks!Hello, J Appleseed.

You can try an uninstall and reinstall of iTunes to see if that resolves the issue. Your iTunes library will not be deleted by doing this. However, this issue could be a result of multiple issues so an uninstall/reinstall may not resolve this. I am in the process of replacing my hard drive and have run into a problem. I reinstalled OSX 10.6.3 using a DVD I bought off Amazon. That went well and I then restored my hard drive using an external and Time Machine.
After that, things still looked good but I couldn't log in to my user (and access my MacBook) because my password wasn't working even though my hint was correct. Yes, I am POSITIVE my password was correct; I even tried a couple other passwords to humor myself. I then gave up and decided to restart the computer.
Now my MacBook won't start up at all. It goes o a gray screen with a still loading symbol for a couple minutes and then goes to a solid light blue screen. I've tried starting up while holding command+R and I tied holding just command and neither worked.
Did I install the wrong OSX because I didn't use the same DVD that came with the laptop? Is there something wrong with my hard drive already?
Please help =[You probably bought the wrong RAM that has different pin assignments, so it won't fit in the slot. Return it.
I bought 4GB Memory online for my MacBook, so I could get it to run twice as fast.

Select your OS and and whether 32 or 64 bit. I recommend the .exe version as it works very smoothly. Uninstall HD AUDIO DEVICE or whatever it is called maybe "unknown device" with ac97 device ID "HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0662&SUBSYS_17AA3604&REV_1001." Afterwards install AC 97 HD Audio Driver.
After install reboot and wait till computer completely starts.
Now uninstall Intel HD Graphics or your graphics device. When you get the uninstall box open, select delete the driver software for this device and then OK. When prompted to reboot select NO and Immediately start the install of the Intel GMA driver. Which installs both the Graphics Adapter and the Intel HD Audio. Reboot when finished and all HD Audio devices will be functional (hopefully). You will now have these versions installed. As shown in device manager/device properties/Driver tab
Now uninstall Realtek AC97 driver you first installed to delete annoying Red Lexmark/realtek icon in Notification area (If your computer shows it after reboot) and windows driver update will install a microsoft driver (shown below)that works without the stupid lexmark red icon. See below. You will now have these versions installed. As shown in device manager/device properties/Driver tab

Voila. Now go to intel and run a driver update scan and it will likely correctly identify your Intel pieces and offer downloads for any that are not current. Hey everyone!
I was just installing Arch on my Desktop few moments ago and decided to give Kdemod4 a try,
but it simply won't start up showing me this error: (in a xtermlike environment)
Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation.
Wondering how to solve this problem...?
So far concerning the installation everything worked quite fine...XServer works with xterm and hal fam and kdm were added to the Daemons array in rc.conf...
After I get back to the tty I also get these lines:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!
/usr/bin/startkde: line11: /usr/bin/kcheckrunning: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line36: /usr/bin/kde4-config: File or directory not found

But: when I DO have those files, namely kcheckrunnig, kde4-config and kstartupconfig4, in /usr/bin...
So seems like something went wrong there...it's just that I can't figure out what...

I suggest gamin instead of fam, and /etc/inittab to start kdm/gdm instead of rc.conf

Still as you can see there are some warnings in the Xorg logfile I have to work on.
Though kdemod4 now starts up upon an 'startx' I won't mark the thread 'solved' till I got everything working correctly...
