U530 function keys without pressing Fn key

I just bought a new IdeaPad U530 laptop and using a function key requires pressing both the Fn key and the specific function key wanted.  Other postings show how to change that on other models and one said that the answer was in the User's Guide.  Neither the User's Guide which was preloaded on my laptop nor the one I downloaded address this.  Every other laptop that I've ever had doesn't require using the Fn key and it's a real pain to have to press both keys together.  I use function keys much more often than the functions that are triggered when the Fn key is not pressed.  Can anyone help?

hi dfmyrick,
Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Looking at Chapter 1 - Page 3 of the Ideapad U530 Users Guide, there's a note where you can toggle Hotkey Mode in the BIOS (this is the option where you don't need to press the Fn key for the function keys to work).
- Link to picture
Can you try to:
1. Boot into the BIOS via the UEFI Firmware Settings
2. In the BIOS, navigate to the Configuration Tab and look for Hotkey Mode or Hotkey Switch then set the value to HotKey Mode or Enabled.

3. When done, press F10 (or Fn+F10) to save and exit then observe if you can now press F1-F12 without pressing the Fn Key inside Windows.
Let me know how it goes.

  • I want to remap my macbook function buttons without pressing fn

    Hi
    I have a new MBP
    I have unchecked the box that lets me use function keys for other than their original purposes
    So now I can use e.g. my last volume button to work instead as a Mission Control / Show desktop function that is really useful for me as I have one funcitonal hand.
    However I'd like to remap or reassign the function buttons. For example my F1 F2 now do nothing - I could assign them to certain other  functions, but I'd like to assign them back to screen brightness.
    Is there a way I can do this?
    And is there a way i can consign the dashboard to the bin, and use that button for something thats actually useful ?
    (Sorry for the repost, I accidently placed it first in a macbook forum)
    Thanks,
    tom

    You can install this into OS X and access the files on Windows side and transfer them to a external drive.
    http://ntfsmounter.com/
    You can also use Winclone to clone Windows (from OS X) to a external drive.
    Once you got a copy of your files off both partitions...
    You can insert the OS X disk of the OS your using into the computer and reboot holding c
    On the second screen you have the option to reinstall OS X (and bundled apps) overwritting what you already have. Your files, account's and third party programs should remain though.
    Use the uninstaller of the program to remove it.
    If you want to erase everything in your OS X partition you can use Disk utility from the installer disk, it's under the Utilities menu in the Installer.
    If you accidentially select your hard drive you can erase both partitions.

    I did not explain myself because that is patently NOT true. I have 4 laptops at this time. In all of them when I press F5, it is F5 not screen brightness or what ever. In order to access the 'blue' functions like screen brightness, keyboard lights, speaker volume etc. I have to press and hold the fn key. However, on my Envy, I have to press and hold the fn key to access F5 rather than just turning on and off the keyboard lights. Now I wish I could reword this thread.
    OK. I don't claim to be perfect. I just looked at three of the notebooks currently at home The newest, which is a dv7-4180ea (HP loaner) has F keys is configured like on your Envy. The HP NX6320 and the Toshiba Satellite M305D have the F keys as main and have secondary functions. They are more straightforward with the use of the Fn key. It appears that it depends on what the manufacturers decided to do at the time.
    BTW if you look back at my unedited post you will see that I did indeed qualify my statement when I wrote it with the word some. So that is not a patently untrue statement. I try to choose my words carefully.  I will edit this post so you can see what I mean.

  • Using javascript to override  pressing function keys (f1,f3,f6,f7,....)

    hi all i wonder if there is a way to to override pressing function keys(f1,f3,f6,f7,....) in adf page for all of the page not just for an input text .
    in another way can i make a client listener for a <f:view> or <af:document> so the javascript function will be called when i preses any button in keyboard without focusing in inputtext or a command button
    Edited by: user554540 on 22/06/2010 03:03 ص

    Hi,
    the problem is that keyboard events are only raised from input components. client listeners can only added to ADF Faces components and af:document does not accept keyboard entries. However, I tried
    af:document > panelStrechtLayout (center facet) > panelGroupLayout (scroll) and assigned a clientListener. At runtime has the desired effect

  • Select multple rows in ALV without pressing pressing CTRL key

    Hi experts,
    Is there any way that I can select multple rows in an ALV without pressing pressing CTRL key?
    I am using set_table_for_first_display method for displaying the ALV.
    I tried different options of sel_mode, but none of them works without the CTRL key.
    Thanks,
    Mohit.

    Hi,
    You can add checkbox using ALV grid display.
    Call your ALV grid as below. Pass 'wa_layout' with 'WA_LAYOUT-BOX_FIELDNAME' as your selection column name.
    CALL FUNCTION 'REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY'
          EXPORTING
            I_CALLBACK_PROGRAM       = SY-REPID
            I_CALLBACK_PF_STATUS_SET = 'F_GUI_STATUS'
            I_CALLBACK_USER_COMMAND  = 'F_USERCOMMAND'
            I_GRID_TITLE             = TEXT-026
            IS_LAYOUT                = WA_LAYOUT
            IT_FIELDCAT              = I_FIELDCAT
          TABLES
            T_OUTTAB                 = I_OUTTAB
          EXCEPTIONS
            PROGRAM_ERROR            = 1
            OTHERS                   = 2.

  • Using function keys (F1, F2, ...) without needing to hold down the fn key

    By default on the Sprout, you need to hold down the "fn" key in order to access the real function keys (F1, F2, F3, ...) instead of the "actions" indicated by the icons on the keys. Normally, there's a BIOS option that lets you change this, so that the F1, F2, F3... function keys work without needing to hold down the "fn" key. E.g. as described in this article:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02035108&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_US...
    However, I don't see this BIOS option in the Sprout's BIOS, which looks quite different than the BIOS in that article.
    Is there some way to change the "fn" key behaviour?
        ...Tim...

    Hi Streup,
    Simple... On the S440 keyboard if you look at the top-left key.. Esc.. You should see a second label "FnLk" - Function Lock.
    Press the Fn key and then Esc.  The Fn Key will light up and now the Function Keys are activated.
    Repeat the same to get the smart keys back.
    Hope this helps

  • [SOLVED] I broke X by pressing a function key

    My laptop is a Lenovo y50 4K.  I have Nvidia hybrid optimus graphics with the proprietary Nvidia driver and xrandr modesetting in my .xinitrc.  I have been using my current configuration successfully for a few months.  The issue started when I pressed FN + F3.  This is the function key that toggles my video output source / screen mirroring to the HDMI plug.  I meant to press FN + F2, which is the one that toggles my screen backlight, but my finger missed the key.  I didn't have anything plugged into the HDMI port at the time and X immediately crashed.  I tried to restart X, but it segfaulted.  I tried pressing the function key again, but under TTY all it does is type "p" in console.  I tried restarting the computer, but that changed nothing.  X still crashes.  I tried loading X with a HDMI screen plugged in, no change.  Now I started to think that it was maybe a bios level toggle, so I looked for an option to disable the HDMI plug in my bios settings.  There was none.  I tried rebooting into Windows plugging a device into the HDMI port and cycling through the HDMI screen mirroring options, disabling the HDMI port there and rebooting.  I tried this because I had a wifi issue in the past that turned out to be a bios level toggle from my wifi function key that could only be set from Windows.  At this point, The HDMI output would no longer mirror the screen at bios and Grub, but as soon as the Linux kernel loaded, the screen would mirror over HDMI again.  I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I have used my HDMI port for screen mirroring in the past without problems, but I never used the function key to toggle it before.
    This error shows up under dmesg when I try to start X.

    It turned out to be exactly this.  Thank you.  It would seem that the function key causing the crash was completely unrelated to my not being able to restart X.  I found the bug report here.
    I followed the advice in the comments and got it running by renaming /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so so glamor can't load.  I'll mark the thread as solved.  Hopefully this bug gets addressed quickly because that fix feels like a dirty hack.

  • 'FRM-41008 - Undefined function key. Press  Ctrl + F1... ' Urgent Pls help

    Hi All,
    We are facing below issue in Oracle 10g Forms.
    We are opening one screen with mutlirecord block and query the recod(First Session) and at the same time we are trying to query one more session(Second session) with same data.
    While querying second session we have blocked the user to proceed further by using select ..... for update of columns and user will get error message
    'Transaction is already locked by another user....'. and we have kept second screen opened.
    Afterwards we are going back to first screen in first session and trying to update the record (Change price column and navigate to next item by using tab key. We are not using anhy other key) System is not allowing to update the record and screen is freezed and cursor control will go to items randomnly and displays below error message.
    'FRM-41008 - Undefined function key. Press Ctrl + F1 for list of valid keys.
    Could somebody pls explaining why above error message 'FRM-41008 ...' is showing for locking record issue ? Any trigger is firing above error message ?
    Thanks in advance
    Biju

    Thanks for the reply but we don't have key others trigger ,we have only when-new-form-instance trigger in form level. That being the case, I recommend you run your Form through the Forms Debugger to see where the form is generating this error. If you are unable to use the Forms Debugger, then I suggest you try running your form with the Forms Runtime Diagnostics (FRD) to see if you can discover the cause of the error. Take a look at this thread for a description of FRD and how to set it up: Re: dbms_session exception without any error. Although, the topic of this thread is not the same as yours, my reply is related. :)

  • "Undefined Function Key. Press Ctrl+F1..." Porting app from 6i to 10G

    I am running into a problem porting my application from Oracle Forms 6i to 10G. When I am querying a record based on a field that is not the first on the screen, I get an "Undefined Function Key. Press Ctrl+F1 for list of valid keys." error. I do not get the error using the same function keys from the first field on the screen. I also do not get the error if I click into another field (besides the one I an querying) before hitting my execute query key.
    I did some research, and found a fix that seems to work. I can add a WHEN_MOUSE_CLICKED trigger to the form and put in the following:
    Go_Item(:System.Mouse_Item);
    That seems to fix the issue. My problem is that I have close to 400 forms to upgrade. I would like to avoid adding this manually to every single form. I have looked into libraries, but I can't seem to figure out how to replicate a WHEN_MOUSE_CLICKED trigger using procedures. I was wondering if there was a way to use the Forms upgrade utility to add this trigger to every form it converts. Does anyone know if that can be done?
    Thanks in advance for your help with this.

    I'm not sure this solves the problem. This would call the trigger, but the trigger does not currently exist. I would still have to manually create the trigger in all 400 (or so) forms. Is there a way to add it in a more global way?
    Thanks.

    how to achieve this.
    This "F4" key it is performing - i want it in a " F5 key" ....please suggest.
    regards

    Hi, if you have a report with the standard (generated) screen you only have the possibilities of F1 and F4 (Help and Value request). Otherwise you have to make your own screen and maintain the function keys. Succes

    My I Mac does not start properly without pressing option and apple keys ,and it freezes

    Try any of the following:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
    Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
    Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
    Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
    Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
    If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

    What is reason for this message, and how can we suppress it. Where should I set the system.message_level to suppress this message.

    The reason is you press a key that cannot be used, e.g. duplicate record cannot be used in enter query mode.
    You cannot suppress this message, even with message_level 25. If you code this for key-duprec, you will still get the message:
    :system.message_level := 25;
    duplicate_record;Forms intercepts the error at a very early stage. Even this didn't suppress the message:
    if :system.mode = 'ENTER-QUERY' then
      null;
    else
      duplicate_record;
    end if;

  • How do I turn off the requirement to press control when using a function key

    When using my wireless keyboard, it requires me to press controls to use the function keys (F3, F5, F70.) However, this makes it so some of my games controls won' work,(For example, in Minecraft I can't access the debug menu.) Is there any way to disable this.Thank you for your support

    Please take these steps if you're prompted for a password when moving items in your home folder to the Trash.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/.Trash
    2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
    from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
    3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
    4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
    5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
    6. Close the Info window and test.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Generate Key Events without pressing key???

    Hi,
    Is it possible to generate key events without pressing a key in swing???
    i dont know if the question is logical or not, but just i want to generate some display as if the key is pressed by the user
    Ashish

    assuming c represents a text field.
    This will type the character 'a' in the text field:
    c.dispatchEvent( new KeyEvent (c, KeyEvent.KEY_TYPED, 0, 0, KeyEvent.VK_UNDEFINED, 'a') );
    This will invoke Ctrl+F1, which will show the tool tip for the text field:
    c.dispatchEvent( new KeyEvent (c, KeyEvent.KEY_PRESSED, 0, KeyEvent.CTRL_MASK, KeyEvent.VK_F1) );
