UAC prompt when set default

We have Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and Reader on the same systems. When my users try to set one or the other as default to open PDF files, they get a UAC prompt.

That makes no sense. So you are saying users must have admin privileges or know the admin password in order to set the default application they want to use to open pdf files? This should be a HKEY Current User setting.

    I think I see why we were having a disconnect earlier when discussing this.  I had some time so I did some more testing and found the following.
    Fresh Windows 8 install with a normal user account (non-admin) has NO UAC PROMPT for taskmgr, regedit, etc.  It just opens under the current user context, same as Windows 7 did.
    Upgraded Windows 8 from Windows 7 install gives a UAC prompt for taskmgr, etc. under the same situation.  I made sure they were in the same OU with the same policies and the same UAC level.  No prompts!  That's the part that never made sense
    to me.  If you can run an app and then use your non-admin credentials at the UAC prompt and it still runs, why did it prompt in the first place?  Makes no sense.  And it turns out that it doesn't look like this is default behavior but something
    messed up on the 7-to-8 computers I'm dealing with.
    So am I missing some setting or something for Windows 7 to 8 upgrade or is this a bug?
    I just started seeing that behavior on a computer that has a fresh installation of windows 8.  For a few weeks after installation, it worked as expected.  Then it started prompting for user credentials when running task manager as a non-admin user. 
    If I enter the credentials of the user who started it (the non-admin user I'm logged on as) it opens and works as expected.

  • UAC Behaviour when set to "Prompt for Consent on the Secure Desktop"

    We are in the process of testing UAC on Windows 8.1. UAC is enabled for admins and the setting for "Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval mode" is set to "Prompt for consent on the secure desktop".
    This results in the administrator having to go through three separate prompts in order to execute the function which required elevation.
    First there is a dialog which gives the options "I want to complete this action by entering my credentials on the authentic Windows sign-in screen" or "I don't want to complete this action"
    Second there is a prompt to press CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter your credentials
    Third there is the prompt for consent on the secure desktop.
    Is there a way I can configure UAC to not have the first two prompts?

    I have a prompt with 3 values,
    1) Year-Qtr
    2) Year-Qtr Start Date
    3) Year-Qtr End Date
    2 and 3 are constrained based off of what is in the Year-Qtr drop down. How can I get 2 and 3 to automatically have the values set and also be hidden to the user.
    Is this possible?

    And regarding the populating the default values based on the value selected in the other prompt is not possible. The default value will always be a hardcoded vaule which can be in the form of presentation variable or sql results or an expression.

  • Audio Problems when setting default device

    Everytime I try to set my headphones as the default sound device, my computer won't allow me to. I even tried to troubleshoot it, and it came up with the resolution of setting my headphones as the default device, but it failed to due to an error.
    It only occurs whenever I use the program Mumble, as I am a gamer and I use it to communicate with my fellow gamers. So whenever I fire up the program, all other sound except what comes from it, goes to my speakers. I don't know if this has to do with the program Mumble itself, or the fact that I LITERALLY cannot change my default device. Please help?

    What version of Windows are you using?

    We get a question like this at least once per week:
    How can I bypass the UAC prompt when running a program or a script?
    The answer to this question is that you cannot bypass the UAC prompt, and this is by design.
    Please read the following FAQ for the reasons why:
    FAQ: Why can't I bypass the UAC prompt?
    The only way to run a program that requires administrative access (elevation) is to use
    Run as administrator (either by right-clicking or or the shell
    runas verb in a script). You can also schedule the program to run with highest privileges, but doing so requires administrative permissions already and thus does not constitute bypassing the UAC prompt.
    The runas command starts a program with alternate credentials, but the program is not started as administrator (elevated). In other words, you cannot use the
    runas command to bypass the UAC prompt either.
    Disabling UAC is not recommended for the reasons stated in the FAQ.

    If the command you want to run is something simple you can you psexec to run as a local admin on the machine. It would look something like this: Psexec \\hostnameorip cmd -s
    I believe you can run a ps script in cmd with: 
    powershell -noexit "& ""C:\my_path\yada_yada\run_import_script.ps1""" 
    Might not get the same response but its a start. This worked for me when I ran a simple PS script to check for Windows updates and export to file on a DC.

  • When I seek to open Firefox it triggers a UAC prompt which may or may not be a spoof, and when I cancel the prompt my home-page loads off-center.

    I recently updated to Firefox 3.6 but a prompt told me to update my Adobe Flash Player. I tried a few times to follow the directions, but nothing matched or seemed to be happening. Then, a pop-up was on my desktop the next day which I thought was the next step or a step I missed. The pop-up said a newer version of Adobe Flash was available. Somehow I may have sought to download the offer, then canceled. For several days there was no problems. All was fine until ZA scared me into buying an offer which did not work well for me so I went back to what I had before I bought then returned their product. When I log on to the computer now and click the Firefox icon to go to the internet browser, the UAC prompt asks me to give Administrator permission to Adobe DLM to download a file "C:/Users/my name/AppData/Roa.../getPlusPlus_Adobe_reg.exe" This did not happen before I started changing my firewall and anti-virus provider back and forth. How can I eliminate the UAC prompt? Should I simply give Administrator permission and download the file? If it is legit, should I keep the file on my computer; and will I find there is an easy way getting it off? At the moment I am using AVG 9.0, the Windows Vista firewall is on, and I have a router. The odd thing about all this; I checked my programs I am able to uninstall and there I see is Adobe Flash Player 10 in the list of programs I have which was installed months before all this happened. If I already had the newest Adobe Flash Player, why would Firefox 3.6 tell me to update my Adobe Flash Player? More to the point, what is the best way to deal with this annoyance: The other user on this computer has no problem like my UAC prompt blocking immediate internet connection through Firefox.

    There has been a security update of the Flash Player and the current version is 10.1 r85 , so you are two versions behind (previous was 10.1 r82).

    Okay, you need to do the following.
    1) You need to see when the item menu opens and what mode it is in and then do the event. So in itemevent uou'll have code similar to

    2) to do the second part,

  • Can you control format when setting variable from dashboard prompt?

    I'm setting a session variable from a calendar date prompt in a dashboard prompt, and the variable is referenced in a calculation in the business model. I'm initializing the date prompt from another variable which returns format TIMESTAMP 'YYYY-MM-DD 00:00:00', and the initial load of the dashboard is successful. After changing the value of the date prompt, the query fails because the prompt sets the variable to 'mm/dd/yyyy'.
    My question is: Is there any way to control the formatting when setting a variable from a dashboard prompt? I would like to get the timestamp format.

    If You wants time than in dashboard prompt's coloumn formula use cast function as "cast(date as time)" if date than "cast(date_col_name as date)". But I also have that one problem.Firstly tell me, Is it possible that using two dates in using betwwen operator in dashboard. We access server variable. If not working one thing more that u should have filter on date coloumn in report layout.And in action coloumn u select prompted. Than It will must work.

    Try to implement an enhancement option in include MF02DFEX. (at the beginning before call to FM CALL CUSTOMER-FUNCTION '001'.).
    and Initialize the value for KNA1-AUFSD.
    In this Include you can see that there is a call for CALL CUSTOMER-FUNCTION '001'.
    So even you test/check the initialized value for field KNA1-AUFSD is updated by putting a break point in this function module after implementation of your enhancement SAPMF02D.

    So, I did some research by using "Set Default Programs" app in Windows 8. Then I ran the super ProcMon.exe tool from Sysinternals.com <Thanks Mark!>
    After filtering out the junk, I could see some *interesting* writes to the registry:

    was pointing to the Modern App, after the change the /export-DefaultAppAssociations shows change to the new app:
