Ubuntu 11.10 failed to boot after (un)successful install on Thinkpad X61

Hello,
I installed Ubuntu from a USB drive and now it won't boot. I get the screen from which I can enter BIOS and manually boot from the USB stick but it won't automatically boot from the HDD. if I don't do that, what happens is that once the BIOS screen disappears all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. nothing else happens anymore. pressing down any key has no effect.
Shortly before finishing the installation, I get this message: "An attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the CD failed". it doesn't say that the installation as a whole failed thought...
Your help is appreciated!

Hi red_revenger,
Can you try formatting the usb in fat32 with the windows (or Linux) tool and after that dump again the ISO image to your usb with unetbootin.
If the problem persist, make a test with another distro, or another version of ubuntu.
If after all steps above you can't still start the system, the problem might be elsewhere. Post back the outcome.

Obviously since you have iOS 7 you're a developer.  As a developer, you signed a NDA with Apple not to discuss the iOS on a public forum.  Please log in to the Developer Forum using your credentials and ask for help there, lest you risk having your credentials terminated.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot after trying to install 10.7.3 update. Start up stalls at Apple logo and spinning gear.

MacBook Pro won't boot after trying to install 10.7.3 update. Start up stalls at Apple logo and spinning gear. Computer won't even start in safe mode.

My daughter's MacBook Pro was doing exactly the same thing.  I don't know if it had anything to do with the latest update.  She called me about a week ago saying that her MacBook began running slower by the day .  She then called me Friday and told me that it wouldn't get past the gray screen and the gear just kept on spinning.  I did everything I could over the phone including Safe mode which it wouldn't go into and thought maybe it was the hard drive.  She took it to the Apple store.  Originally, they also thought it was the hard drive.  It ended up being a corrupted operating system (Lion).  Apple genius simply re-installed Lion and she's back up and running.  Good thing she backed up right before it crapped out.  She'll be restoring everything tonight.  Don't know if re-installing Lion will help your situation, but it did the trick for my daughter.

  • Restored 10.6 OS from CD and fails to Boot after Combo upgrade

I have a clean install of Lion on my internal drive and an external clone of the HD from the previous Snow Leopard install. The Clone worked until I updated via the latest auto update. I have App's and other settings to transfer to Lion from this clone so want to get it working so I can ensure all the App's are upgraded to work on Lion or are deleted.
After the external drive failed to boot I reinstalled the system from my Snow Leopard Install CD, not the 24-inch iMac (Mid 2007) restore CD.
I then used Auto updater to install the combo and other updates to 10.6.8 this booted fine until I upgraded Safari 5.1 and Java - the last items that came up on the software updater. Upon restart, the boot failed in the last portion of the boot and at this point the Apple emblem went away and the round circle with diaginoal line apeared.
On starting with the option key down, the clone disk 10.6.8 shows as being available, along with the internal Drive, for booting.
Starting with "command + S" gets through to the last line of the process then states "waiting on Root"
When compaired to a Snow OS that boots OK it is the last line of code before the curser is ready for entering a command.
Can anyone tell me what to look for or how to repair this error so that I can get my data across to Lion. Thanks

Well, in case anyone else has a similar problem I managed to fix the system by the following process:
I reinstalled 10.6.0 from the retail Snow Leopard CD. The drive Booted OK but I needed to be upgraded to 10.6.8 to use the migration tool so I then upgraded using the Software Update utility. Boot failed again at this point and could not be fixed by anything I did.
I then reinstalled 10.6.0 from the CD to try again, but the HD would not boot this time around.
I downloaded CleanApp by Synium Software (http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/) on a commendation from the famous eBook, "Take Control of installing Lion" by Joe Kissell of TidBits. I used this from my Lion HD to remove all orphan files, PPC files and Apps, and other junk. Snow Leapard still not Booting after repairs by various disk repair utilities including Apples.
I Booted from my internal HD using Lion and ran SuperDuper to make a new Clone of the failed HD on a second external HD. Took a day and a night to run while I was at work, but the new clone would not boot at this stage so I ran SuperDuper again using the "Smart Update Backup" option. This just adds changed files or missing files to the clone. At the end of this process I had a running Clone that would boot on 10.6.0.
I Booted from the second Clone and used the Software Update utility then to up grade in the two stages the Auto system used to bring my OS up to 10.6.8. This was successful and I had a Bootable Snow Leopard with no old Apps from which to Migrate my data.

  • Arch fails to boot after installation (BIOS mode)

I finished my Arch installation, following the Beginner's Guide, and once I unmounted the partitions and rebooted, GRUB failed to boot into Arch. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is though. Basically what happens is I power on the machine, the Dell splash screen comes up, GRUB loads, I choose
Arch Linux, with Linux core repo kernel
the kernel and ramdisk attempt to load, then some message about "recovering journal" appears, and then I return back to the Dell splash screen. The same thing happens even if I choose the second option
Arch Linux, with Linux core repo kernel (Fallback initramfs)
However, when I choose to boot Win XP everything boots just fine. My apologies for the quality of the videos and pictures.
Here's a video of what happens:
    http://youtu.be/uC96kX6iTjI
I suspect this has to do with this error I got when I generated the "grub.cfg". Although I'm not entirely sure because my understanding is that this error would affect booting Win XP which in fact boots perfectly fine.
Error (and no I'm not using any lvm volumes)

I believe these are the portions of the "grub.cfg" that load Arch and Win XP. I got these by pressing "e" while on their menu entry in the GRUB bootloader.

    * I'm not sure if this is of any significance but I had a problem very similar to this when trying to get the Arch install to boot via usb (this computer doesn't have CD/DVD drive). I solved it by following this excerpt from the Beginner's Guide.
    Troubleshooting boot problems
If you are using an Intel video chipset and the screen goes blank during the boot process, the problem is likely an issue with Kernel Mode Setting. A possible workaround may be achieved by rebooting and pressing
    e
over the entry that you are trying to boot (i686 or x86_64). At the end of the string type
    nomodeset
    and press
    Enter
Here's a video of what it looked like:
    http://youtu.be/vXRcbU0zdto
    The computer specs:
OS: Windows XP Professional 32 bit Version 2002 Service Pack 3
    CPU: Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.00 GHz
    RAM: 2 GB DDR2
    HDD: 80 GB

    Hi,
    why did you not try adding nomodeset with the regular boot? During the net-install no video drivers will be installed;
you have to install them after reboot after installing xorg. The (video)problem you had with booting from usb is still
    present.

  • Lenovo E531 failing to boot after it crashed during a Windows 10 update.

Hello guys, A few weeks back I signed up for the Windows 10 insider program and installed the windows 10 ISO without any problems. Of course there were the usual bugs that you get when working with a non-final build of a new OS, but that's not the problem here. A few days ago I received a new update, and after it was done downloading it prompted me to upgrade to the new version, which I complied to. Halfway the installation I suddenly get the "  Oops, something went wrong, we're collecting information and rebooting your pc" pop-up screen. The error had something to do with installing a driver. After it rebooted I just stared at a black screen. Since then I'm not able to boot into windows anymore. Bascially what happens is when i boot, i get the usual bios screen and the Lenovo splash screen. But followed by a black screen with absolute no information. Apart from one single '-' .When pressing 'enter' I hear a beep, and the "boot interruption" screen pops up with various options. Like booting into the Bios to change settings, and to temporarily chose a different boot device. Getting into the Bios settings is no problem, and i can change anything (I resetted the settings to default just to be sure, which didnt do anything). But as soon as I try to chose a different boot device, I get the same black screen. So I am not able to boot my windows 10 Preview installation DVD. I even tried booting without the HDD installed, which gave me the same screen again. I did all the diagnostics test from the lenovo diagnostics screen, which all resulted in no problems found. It recognizes the HDD, and the DVD when i get the Bios splash screen.  Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this? Thanks so much in advance.

Thanks for the reply. I tried updating the BIOS by running the .exe on a different pc and burn the BIOS the a CD, and even tried a USB.The thing is that when i want to boot from a CD or USB. I never get the option to do so. Always a black screen.  I've contacted Lenovo support via phone and they told me that I had to buy a recovery disc from https://www.lenovorecovery.com. Which I did. The person on the telephone even told me that it didnt matter what the boot order was, This recovery disc would instantly boot. After i received these discs and tried to boot from them, it didn't work. Just as every other bootable DVD/USB I tried.See below for a pic from my laptop screen. Now I don't see any other option other than sending it to a repairshop to get the bios chip replaced... Any ideas?  Thanks! https://www.dropbox.com/s/sdln9jnysc8vmas/2015-08-10%2013.49.26.jpg?dl=0

  • IBook G4 fails to boot with internal HD installed, works when removed

The short version: My iBook started failing to boot via any method (gray screen) and the boot menu (Option during startup) would freeze. Replaced HD, things were better. Six months into new HD, nearly the same symptoms appear again. Removed HD, now running off different HD via FireWire.
    The long version–
Back in late 2008-12, my iBook started failing to boot up. Usually it would refuse to boot from any source. Booting the internal disk (10.4.11) would get to a gray screen without any logo and stay there. Holding down Option, the boot menu would come up, but it would usually freeze before it displayed any volumes. Booting from CD (AHT, or OS install disc) would fail in nearly the same way as booting from the internal drive. Target Disk Mode would start, but once the other machine tried to access the drive, the FireWire logo would stop moving and the drive would never show up on the other computer. Very rarely, the machine would get a bit further through one of the boot mechanisms, but it usually froze while booting or just after login.
This machine has gone through three logic boards in the past, so I suspected that was the problem again. I took it to a local Genius Bar and the Genius explained that it was probably the hard drive. He said that sometimes, depending on the way the drive fails, it can "take out" other parts of the system due to drawing too much current, etc.
I was a bit skeptical, but it was going to be much cheaper to replace the HD myself than it would be to send it in for a MLB replacement. So I ordered a new HD (80G) and a USB-to-ATA/SATA adapter. I hoped that I would be able to use the adapter to savlage a bit more data off the drive (it originally failed right before a backup!).
After extracting the HD (40G), I connected it to the USB adapter and was able to access the drive just fine. I used another machine to run another backup from the recently removed HD (40G) to one of my FireWire backup drives and proceeded to put the iBook back together with the new HD (80G).
Once it was all back together, the new HD worked fine. I was able to restore the recent backup from my FireWire drive to the internal, and it worked fine. The only oddity I noticed was that the new drive was apparently trying to sleep several times a minute. I used smartctl (installed via MacPorts) to adjust the power management setting on the drive, and that seemed to help. I also started running smartd (also via MacPorts) to better monitor the new drive.
Recently, a bit more than six months after the new HD was installed, the new HD started showing errors in the system.log. I never found any errors in the logs after the previous HD failed (even though I could look through the logs just fine with the drive attached through the ATA-USB adapter).

I did not notice the errors until the afternoon of the 7th when the problem became evident. The events around 13:00 happened when I was trying to run a backup. The first backup failed in an odd way (when I came back to check on it later that evening, SuperDuper! seemed to have quit running). So I restarted the backup and started looking around in the logs. That is when I noticed the kernel I/O error messages. When I asked smartctl to query the drive, it showed that many errors had been occurring and it displayed the drive's log of the last five or so errors (alas, I did not save this output). Meanwhile the re-run of SuperDuper! was having problems again. It seemed to have hung (no SDAgent or SDCopy processes were running, but the main UI was still there). Since the backup was not getting anywhere, I decided to shutdown for a while and try again later.
When I did try again later, I was back in the situation of six months ago. It would not boot at all (no internal, no FireWire, no CD/DVD, boot menu hangs, Target Disk Mode hangs). So, I opened up the system, removed the HD and put it back together without an internal HD. The machine is now able to boot and run from FireWire. Again, the (6 month old, 80G) HD "works fine" via the USB adapter. If SMART were available through the USB adapter, I could check to see if the drive is continuing to have problems. I used SuperDuper! to copy the HD to a volume on my FireWire drive which is how I an now running the system.
Has anyone had any similar problems? Any idea why my iBook seems to be killing/rejecting hard drives? (I say killing because, while the drive is connected internally, it certainly seems to be dying. I say rejecting because once the drive is out of the system, both the drive and the system seem to "recover".) I have read messages there where others report success having their iBook MLB resoldered ("reball"). Has anyone experienced substantially similar issues that were solved with a resolder repair?
    Thanks!

I was able to test my “failing” ATA drives in a G4 Mac mini (I had to take the mini apart because its drive had finally failed). I was able to successfully boot the Mac mini with either of my iBook drives installed. Once booted, +Disk Utility+ said that each one's SMART Status was Verified. I used smartctl to pull the full SMART info while I had them installed in the Mac mini.
Since the drives were still “good”, I think this emphasizes that the problem is with the ATA interface on my iBook's logic board. Maybe it is broken, or maybe it just needs to be resoldered. For now I am happy just booting off an external Firewire drive.
BTW, I ended up installing the 6 month old 80G drive in the mini. It has been working OK for 10 days now. As long as it continues to operate normally in the mini, it will serve as evidence that my iBook's HD ATA controller is borked. I just hope the ATA controller is more capable of accepting its fallibility than was HAL.
There is a minor problem with the 80G in the mini in that I am unable to use hdapm to change the aggressive head unloading that the drive suffers. I was able to adjust it with hdapm while it was in my iBook. I am able to adjust it with hdparm under Linux on the mini. Luckily the change I made while booted in Linux "sticks" after rebooting back into Mac OS X (I hear it will be lost if the drive is completely powered off though).

  • Windows 7 Won't Boot After Nvidia Driver Installed, MSI Gaming N770

Hi I just bought the MSI Gaming N770 2gb and after installing the nvidia drivers, Windows 7 will not boot after my motherboard POSTs.
I bought this to replace an AMD card.  I uninstalled all the AMD drivers before putting in the MSI card.  I've also run the Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode and everything.
After a few hours of research, I finally came across a thread about flashing a vbios, and something about these cards not working with motherboards with UEFI bios.
    I'm using a P8Z77-I Deluxe mini-itx board, with a Rosewill 630W psu.
I have both 6+2 PCI pins plugged into the two 8pin power ports on the GPU.
Is this an issue that can be fixed with turning off secure boot? or by flashing a vbios onto the card? Or is the card a dud? Or do I have to re-install Windows.
If the vbios is required, are there instructions on how to flash it? I have no idea how to flash a BIOS.  Thank you!!

Had to update BIOS. All fixed!!!!

  • Mac Pro refuses to boot after new drive instalation...

    Hi
Could anyone shed a bit of light on my problem - Ive just got a new 500gb seagate drive, - when I load it up in order to format, im faced with a blank screen, and os x refuses to even think about booting up - there is also an odd click which Im guessing is the boot drive trying to start.
The new drive slots into place fine, and I made sure I was earthed out before touching it...
When the new drive is taken out, the system starts up without a hitch.
Do I have a duff drive? - or am I missing something blindingly obvious?
    Thanks for any help
    Maxine.

    Hi,
Funny that I saw this message, I am the person that had the exact same problem on the 20th of December.
After trying to install the HD, I had the problem as well. I ended up taking the computer in to my local Apple store, and they kept the Mac Pro.
It is now January 5th and I still do not have the system. Called them an hour ago and they said that the part (they didn't mention what it was) was on BACKORDER, so they had to decide if they were going to wait for the part or give me a brand new system. Hmmmm.... Could this be a NEW hidden problem for the Mac Pro now?
I wanted to purchase an iMac, but was afraid of the lock-up issues. I am starting to regreat my choice and wish I had got an iMac, at least I would have some kind of file server for my network
All I can suggest is to take it in to your local Apple store and let them check it, and then ask if they could fix it right then, or you two could have a system that's not able to be workable.

  • Z580 won't boot after Windows 7 Install

    Hi,
After a clean install of windows 7 on the hard drive, Lenovo Z580 wont boot up but when hard drive it put into my old Acer laptop, boots fine.
Initially had to remove the hard drive from the Lenovo and put into another laptop to install windows 7 as lenovo wouldnt boot from usb or CD. And then after install tried putting hard drive back into Lenovo and just doesn't boot at all. Just goes to boot manager sceen and then blank in a continous loop.
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum!
"remove the hard drive from the Lenovo and put into another laptop to install windows "
You stated the exact reason for your problem.  You can't install Windows 7 on one laptop and expect it run on another by swapping the hard drive.  It doesn't work.  During the installation Windows inventories the installed hardware and configures itself accordingly.  Since they are two different machines, Windows won't boot.  You are going to have to resolve the USB or Optical drive boot problem on the Lenovo laptop you wish to install Windows on.
During bootup have you tried using the Boot Menu to boot the machine specifically from the optical drive?

  • Jaguar won't boot after iPod updater install

    Greetings,
My Jaguar (10.2.8) will not boot after I installed (via Software Updater) the iPod Updater 2005-11-17 on my iMac.
I've run Repair Permissions and Repair Disk using Disk Utilities (from both a Jaguar and Panther install CD) and zapped PRAM (3x). No problems show up on Repair Disk. I get the start up chime and a gray screen with the gray Apple logo, but no spinning circle. That's as far as it goes. I cannot boot to Safe or Single-user mode (not sure what I can run except fsck -y).
I can, however, boot to OS 9.1.x on the hard disk; I'm hoping to copy/recover files over the newtwork.
Any ideas (short of erase/partitioning drive and reinstall OS)?
(Don't know if this has anything to do with my post- iPod Update 2005-11-17 problems, but. . . My original iMac drive was 4Gb. I Carbon Copy Cloned the whole disk to a formatted 30Gb hard drive mounted in an external USB drive enclosure, removed the larger drive from the enclosure and installed it in the iMac. Worked like a charm. I've used it this way for almost a year, enduring several application updates, e.g. security updates, QuickTime, iTunes, even one iPod updater. I have noticed, however, that I cannot reinstall Jaguar or install Panther to this HD because the system is not in the first 8Gb of the hard drive. Apparently, I need to create a partition on this 30Gb drive that is < 8Gb in size before I can proceed with the install/reinstall. I thought this limitation was corrected with Panther, but not so?)
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Figured it out.
I couldn't boot to OS X because, it seems, the iPod updated caused Jaguar to behave in it's predictable pattern of not booting properly from a partition > 8Gb in size on this iMac (a 233Mh model that Apple says is affected in this way, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235). In my case, I had Carbon Copy Cloned my 10.2.8 to a 18Gb drive. No problems occurred with running it. However, this was the first set of updaters I've installed on that OS since that cloning operation. And it simply wouldn't boot.
I booted to OS 9, copied files to a laptop over the network, pulled out the Jaguar install disks and repartitioned the drive to include one partition <8Gb in size, installed the OS there. All's fine now, just have to hassle with moving all those files back and testing.
I could have used a repartitioner (FWB Partitioner Tool for OS 9, <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.publishingperfection.com/fwb-software/fwb201/, other dynamic partitioners are available for OS X) to make the < 8Gb partition within my OS 9 boot and avoid deleting everything on the drive in the process. But I didn't figure this out until I'd already backed everything up. Plus, I didn't want to pay the extra bucks and wait for shipping. So I used Disk Utility on my Jaguar install disk to create my < 8Gb partition for Jaguar. Now I have a fresh install. But I'd rather not have had to spend the time figuring all this out!!

If that works, to prevent having to do the same process everytime you restart Windows, go to. START button, type in
    MSCONFIG
    Hit ENTER
Click STARTUP Tab, Uncheck "Apple Push", click OK.
    Restart Windows.
    3. If that fails or you don't see ApsDaemon.exe in the Processes, refer to following article to remove SC files:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2363
    4. If that fails, repair or reinstall your Quicktime. START / CONTROL PANEL / PROGRAMS N FEATURES / hightlight QUICKTIME and click REPAIR.

  • Pushing client installation failed to some boundaries whereas successfully installed in some boundaries

    Hi
I have a SCCM 2012 RTM installed in my network and before it was working fine and successfully installed clients by Client push method
Now I added another forest and successfully discovered all computers in the second forest able push client and successfully installed
Now my problem is , all client computer's in the first forest activity showing "active" and recieves updates from server without any issue. But I could not push the client installation to new computers on the first forest (active directory). While
monitor the ccmsetup.log file on each new computer the installation get stuck on BITS download
I am not saying , this is server configuration problem because when I push the client installation to the computers on second forest, the package downloaded successfully and client and SCEP installed successfully
I checked and double checked the boundary settings and DP and it was exactly same as the second boundary
I removed the boundary, boundary group and site system for the problematic computers and recreated everything as it is
But no luck still I am recieving the same status on the ccmsetup.log
please help me because I have been  playing with this issue for the last one week

    Dear Mr Jason,
I have prepared a new laptop with windows 7 and SP1 and joined to domain
In sccm server manually run the AD system Discovery and after a while the new computer appeared on the corresponding collection
I initiated the client pushing on 6.00 PM evening and leave the laptop online (turned off computer sleep settings)
Today morning when I checked only 4 files in c:\Windows\ccmsetup folder and I checked the log.
Later I ran the same command
    \\SCCMSERVER\XXX_Package\Client\ccmsetup.exe  SMSSITECODE=XXX
    SMSSLP=SCCMSERVER
    Then
client and SCEP installed successfully within 20 minutes
    How
can I find which policy or which settings block the client pushing? Do I need to check any other log file in server ?
    Thanks
