  • VMWare Remote Console Plug-in for Firefox 4.0.1 (host OS Ubuntu 11.04 amd64 desktop)

I installed host "Ubuntu 11.04 amd64 desktop" successfully. Then installed VMWare Server 2.0.2 successfully.
I have a message "VMWare Remote console Plug-in is not compatilble with Firefox 4.0.1" when running Firefox.
    1) How  can I get "VMWare Remote console Plug-in"  fully compatilble with Firefox 4.0.1?
    2) How  can I replace Firefox 4.0.1 (build in Ubuntu 11.04) with Firefox 3.6?
Have any ideas for fix this problem?

Just tried to download firefox 3.6 from mozilla and I have found that it is no longer available, only version 13, even the links for version 3.6 are broken. I am unable to do anything with my virtual server. This is not a very good demonstration of your software.

  • Burning Ubuntu ISO appears to fail in Mavericks

    Folks,
I have used Disk Utility in the past to burn an ISO to a DVD. I haven't done it in awhile. I find now that after downloading the Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 LTS ISO for i386 (Intel) that the burn succeeds but, "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I thought Disk Utility was simply copying the ISO to the disc rather than expanding and burning the file hierarchy until I checked the disc in my Toshiba PC.
If I insert one of my Mac created 'coasters' into the PC. It shows up with full folder hierarchy. So, from the PC perspective it is a good bootable disc. I am actually installing Ubuntu over there now from that disc.
I knew I could burn a DVD with Toshiba Disc Creator,  ISO to Disc or something similar, and see the file hierarchy on the resulting disc.  The Mac instructions on the Ubuntu How-To page are simplicity itself: open Disk Utility; drag ISO to the left panel; select; Burn. An old MacHints article from 2005 gives the same instructions. Again, while the burn succeeds, it doesn't mount.
In Disk Utility with the ISO in the left panel, if I double-click it I see, "Unable to attach 'ubuntu-12.04.4-desktop-i386.iso' (no mountable file systems.)"  It is similar if I double-click it in the Finder.
If I had only one computer, I would assume failure. If I pop in the disc to create a Linux virtual machine in VirtualBox on my Lion Mac, the Finder reports it is unable to read the disc. I have the option to "Ignore"  and I start the new Linux VM and see it read the disc for installation. It is just odd. (I have no idea if it would work with Boot Camp.)
Why on earth doesn't it mount on OS X?
    Cheers,
    Paul

ISO are images of a disk, to burn an iso you would need some specialized buring software to do this like NERO, or in this case TOAST, and from the file menu click burn image to disc, and BURN!!!
I'm sure you can download some opensoure software and install it on the mac.
    Thats about it really

  • Linux on Parallels, worth trying?

I have the standard 17" 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo 1 gb iMac. I'm interested in trying to use some Linux apps in Parallels desktop, but I'd really appreciate some advice before I dive into something that may be over my head!
    1) Do I need to upgrade to 2 Gigs of memory for Parallels to function effectively?
    2) What level of functionality will my Linux VM have? Will I be able to use the internet effectively via Ethernet? What about file storage on the hard drive?
    3) I assume the answer to question #2 leads directly into this question: what distribution of Linux to try? I've heard Ubuntu is the 'easiest for a beginner' but from my forum searches I'm wondering if it might be harder to get running correctly under Parallels.
    4) I'm a long-time Mac user, but I am not an expert, and I'm used to dealing at things at the level of the GUI and my applications. Am I biting off more than I can chew? I've heard that getting Linux working is tricky under optimal conditions, and I assume doing it in a virtualized environment adds another layer of complexity. If I need to spend a hundred hours learning more before I try this, somebody let me know!

The Intel 386 32 bit version is what I used. I don't think the PPC version would work at all. Here is the name of the disk image I installed from:
    ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso
I was using the most recent Parallels build, 1970, and a custom Virtual Machine setup as follows. Guest OS is "Other Linux kernel 2.6" 512 MB RAM, CD/DVD drive default, 8 gig hdd, Bridged Ethernet Default, USB Autoconnect on. I set bootup to CD first, and targeted it to the above disk image file. The VM launched to desktop, and I selected the Install shortcut. It installed to the hdd image, and I told it to shut down (not restart). After stopping the VM, I retargeted the boot sequence of the VM to start with the hdd and it launched successfully. To change screen resolution to 1440 x 900 I had to specify that resolution in the Parallels VM setup, then run a Terminal script from the Linux terminal inside the VM, referenced in the link several posts above. Shutdown again, and after reboot, the GNOME desktop launched at that size. Everything has worked perfectly, although (for instance) I didn't setup the virtual machine to do audio. Mac OS X has much easier tools for audio and video than Linux so I decided to focus on creating a simple VM that wouldn't have to do a lot of I/O, which tends to be the tricky part of virtualization. Internet performance has been fine though, so the defaul Ethernet adapter seems to work great.
Now that I have a functional and stable Ubuntu 6.06 GNOME configuration, I want to try to setup a 6.10 Kubuntu Edgy/KDE machine. Thanks to the magic of virtualization, I can do that without affecting the other version at all. YMMV but I'm very impressed by how well my iMac works as a Linux machine.

  • Interesting problem with RAID, Windows 2008 server, and Ubuntu

sooooo, i got the system working and linux loved it.  just adored it.
however, Windows did not.  Windwos 2008 server hard locks from time to time.  i fianlly figured out that it had to do with the RAID 0 i was running, that didn't really succeed.
However, when i rebuilt the RAID and everything on it, it refuses to recognize the disk, sayign that windwos cannot determine if this drive has a valid system volume on it.
Ubuntu 9.04 server, however, just took it and made it work great.
I enabled the PCI Bus SATA to be Master in the BIOS, and then Windows Server 2008 said that it could not determine if the drive was bootable.  Then i went back and redid the raid, and it did the original error.
I inserted a windows xp disk, destroyed the RAID, and then installed the software on a NEW disk.   While it installed fine, it gave me an IRQL_not_less_than_or_equal error.  It boots in safe mode, but no where else.  I tried installing the NVRAID and MCP55 drivers in safemode and what not, but still, it refused to cooperate.  I went back to ubuntu, this time the desktop/workstation versions, and i am doing an alternate install with RAID...much to my disappointment becuase now i will have to use VirtualBox to isntall windows...and if that fails, i'll be really pissed.
    My settings are as follows:
    SATA Controller 0-5 enabled
    NVRAID- enabled
PCI BUS SATA- Option ROM Enabled, Master Enabled, and 0040h latency
    MAC LAN- same as above
MAC LAN1- has master disabled, but the other stuff is the same
Serial port A is on AUTO, B is disabled, and floppy is disabled.
    Option Rom is PFA relocation.
Also, my AEC A6880 is giving me a ROM expansion error, even though, in both OSes it can be seen....usualy.  I just want to fix it
lastly, my LSI PCI-E scsi adapter is not being seen at ALL.
    thanks guys.

How to use remote desktop client in mountain lion.
I want to connect my other system(ubuntu) using mac remote desktop client, But i could not locate remote desktop client in moutain lion.

In Ubuntu 12.xx use Dash to find "Desktop Sharing" and set the preferences, including requiring a password.
Then in Ubu use System Settings > Network to determine your Ubu machine's IP address, such as 192.168.1.13.
On the Mountain Lion Mac do Finder > Go > Connect to Server   and enter:  vnc://192.168.1.13  or whatever your IP is.  Enter the password that you used in the Ubu Desktop Sharing setup, when asked.
On the Ubu machine answer the question that pops up asking for permission to connect.  Your Ubu screen will now show up on the Mac, and you can remote control it.   Here I am running "Octave" (a math program) on the Ubu machine, remotely.
Works great!  BTW, you can do this from an iPad too, using a VNC client such as Mocha VNC Lite.  You can even run both remotes simultaneously.
    Good luck.

  • Installing Ubuntu 10.4.1 alongside Mac OS X 10.6.4 Problem

I'm not sure where a posting like SHOULD have gone but this seemed
the place it might get the most attention, and that's why I posted it
here. I hope it doesn't offend anybody.
This is my first attempt at installing Ubuntu 10.4.1 Desktop LTS on my
Intel mac. I followed the guidelines described in:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation
for a Dual-Boot: Mac OSX and Ubuntu. I did the following:
    1. Installed rEFIt (and made sure it works)
    2. Used Disk Utility to shrink my MacHD partition to 200G and created
a second 119G partition for Ubuntu.
    3. Booted a Ubuntu LiveCD and started the partition editor (gparted).
I used it to delete the Ubuntu partition created in #2 above. I
    applied the changes and exited.
    4. Started the Ubuntu Installer. Chose to install to the "largest
continuous free space". NOW IS WHERE THE PROBLEM COMES IN! On
the last dialog of the installer, it says to click the "Advanced"
button and choose to install the boot loader (grub) to /dev/sda3.
THERE IS NO /dev/sda3 LISTED! This is the list presented to me:
    /dev/sda ATA ST3320820AS_P (320.1 GB)
    /dev/sda-1
    /dev/sda1
    /dev/sda2 Mac OS X
    /dev/sda-1
So, not wanting to screw things up (since I don't know what I'm doing -
just following instructions) I decided to quit and abort the installation.
Does anybody have any suggestion as to why there is no /dev/sda3?
How about what I should do now?
    Thanks
    Ron

Sorry this isn't an answer to your question, but installing Ubuntu within VMware Fusion is a lot safer and easier... If you don't need Ubuntu for uncompromised audio/video input or output, there really isn't a disadvantage, and being able to run both OS X and Ubuntu side-by-side has its advantages.

  • [Ubuntu] Can't install Ubuntu on my MacBook Air.

I want to install Ubuntu on my MacBook Air. Problem : each time the DVD-RW burning ends, the disc becomes unreadable. How can I install Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits on a MacBook Air late 2011 still with OS X Lion ?
    Hi there.
I have a MacBook Air late 2011 still working with OS X Lion (actually OS X 10.7.4).
I just wanted to install Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits on my MacBook Air but I can't and I don't know why. The problem I encounter is the following : each time the DVD-RW burning ends, the disc becomes unreadable by the system and I can't do anything but erase it and try to burn it again… This is the fourth time I did it and it still doesn't works. Impossible to burn the DVD-RW without making it unreadable by the system. And I checked Bootcamp Assistant options but there's nothing about Linux…
I use an original Apple's superdrive to burn the disc.
A friend just told me to use Bootcamp Assistant, install Windows 7 on a new partition, then replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu… But I don't really know what to do. This is the first time that I try to install another system…
Could anyone help me ? Thanks.

I finally did it. In fact, if the DVD wasn't readable by OS X after the burning, he was readable by rEFIt on the superdrive. Me (OS X Lion 4 on a MacBook Air late 2011) and a friend (OS X Mountain Lion 1 on a MacBook Pro of 2008) did it this way :
    1. Download the Ubuntu iso named "ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso".
    2. Burn it on a blank DVD with the disk utility.
    3. Make a partition for Ubuntu with the disk utility.
    4. Install rEFIt.
    5. Restart the Mac.
    6. Select the icon of Tux behind a little disc.
    7. Try Ubuntu from the disc.
    8. While trying Ubuntu on the disc, use the installer to install Ubuntu. NOTE: NE CAREFUL WHILE INSTALLING UBUNTU, IF YOU CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION AT A MOMENT OF THE INSTALLATION YOU CAN ERASE OS X.
    9. After the installation, Ubuntu should tell you that you might restart the computer. Restart the Mac, and you'll arrive on the rEFIt menu.
    10. You can now use Ubuntu on your Mac, enjoy.
We both did it and it worked well, I even reinstalled Ubuntu and it worked well again. Just be careful while installing Ubunut, I'll maybe repeat myself but choosing the wrong option could suppress OS X. Except if you just want a MacBook Air with Ubuntu for the weight… Have a nice day.

  • Palm Desktop Software for Linux

I recently purchased a Palm Centro (verizon).  I successfully sync it with Evolution (sometimes a little glitchy) via the gnome-pilot conduits.  However, I have not found a way to sync any software or to sync documents with dataviz software.  I see reports that Palm is building or has built a linux OS for their pda's.  Is this likely to be compatible with the Centro?  Is there or will there be a beta?  Is there a desktop software available for Linux?  I specifically use Ubuntu 8.10 but will upgrade to 9.04 soon.
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

The Centro will most likely be the end of the line device for Palm OS.  Palm is moving on to a different OS entirely.
I wouldn't hold my breath for an Ubuntu version of Palm Desktop...

  • Connecting to windows vm in ubuntu

Hi, I am a new user so apologies in advance if I am breaking any protocols. I have a VM instance running and now I want to connect to it. I found this tutorial quite useful in this regard: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-windows-tutorial/
However, now I want to connect to it and when I click on connect, it downloads an .rdp file that open in gedit on double clicking. Any help will be deeply appreciated.

    hi Satish;
A useful feature of Windows is being able to connect to your Windows Server from another location to remotely manage your computer. While this functionality is native in Windows, it is not supported by default in many Linux distributions, including Ubuntu.
However, you can connect to a Windows remote desktop, if you are willing to use third-party tools found in the
Ubuntu Software Center. This tutorial will show how.
NOTE: This tutorial was created on Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail).
Step 1: Enable Remote Desktop Connections on your Windows PC
In order to allow other computers to connect remotely to your Windows computer, you need to enable the
Remote Desktop Connection feature. To learn how to do this, read this tutorial:
How to Enable Remote Desktop Connections in Windows 7 & Windows 8.
Step 2: Install a Remote Desktop Client - Our Choice: Remmina Remote Desktop Client
By default, Ubuntu doesn’t come with a remote desktop client which supports the
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) used by Windows operating systems for remote connections. You need to install one of the clients available in the
    Ubuntu Software Center.
First, start the Ubuntu Software Center.
Search for the words "remote desktop" and you will be shown all the available applications.
We preferred to choose Remmina Remote Desktop Client, a client which is very appreciated by the user community and is, at the same time, very versatile and easy to use.
To get it installed, select it and click Install.
You are asked for your password. Type it and click Authenticate.
NOTE: please keep in mind that, in order to install software, your user account needs to have administrative permissions. If you are set as a standard user account, you cannot install any software.
Now the application is downloaded and installed. Wait until the procedure ends.
Step 3: Configure the Remote Desktop Session
It is time to start the Remmina Remote Desktop Client. Search your Ubuntu PC using the word
remmina and click on the appropriate search result.
Click the "Create a new remote desktop file" button.
The Remote Desktop Preference window is opened. Here you can configure the remote connection you want to establish.
In the Profile section, type the name you want to use for the connection. It can be anything you wish. Then, in the
Basic tab, complete the IP address of the Windows computer in the Server field. Then, type the username and password you want to use to connect to the Windows computer. Be aware that the user needs to exist on the Windows computer. If you
are using a Microsoft account on your Windows 8 PC, it is OK to fill in your email address and password.
You can also set the Resolution you want to use for the connection and the
    Color depth.
NOTE: Selecting a larger desktop resolution and color depth can impact the performance of your remote desktop session. If you experience lag when connected to a remote desktop, try reducing the color depth or resolution.
If you want to share a folder existing on your Ubuntu computer with the Windows computer, simply check the
Share folder box and select the folder you want to share from Ubuntu.
Also, for more advanced settings, go to the Advanced tab. There you can turn the sound on or off, share printers, disable clipboard synchronisation, etc.
Once you are done making all the settings, click the Connect button. When connecting for the first time, a new certificate is created for the remote connection. Click
    OK to accept it.
After a while, if the Windows computer is turned on and connected to the same network, you should be connected to it.
Once you close the remote connection, Remmina Remote Desktop Client automatically saves it so that you will be able to reconnect at a later time, with a simple click on the connection name.
    Conclusion
As you can see, the procedure is not really complicated. As long as you make the right settings and use a client which supports the RDP protocol, connecting remotely from Ubuntu to a Windows desktop is almost a trivial task. For other tutorials related remote
desktop connectivity, check out the links below.

  • Organizing Apps ala-Ubuntu

I recently started playing around with Ubuntu on my dinosaur desktop. I like it. One feature I especially like is the organization of Applications in the top left of the menubar.
Is it possible to emulate this in Mac OS X? Specifically, are any of the following possible...?
    * Create a new menu in the Finder's menu bar, and organize it ala Ubuntu
    * Place Apps into folder like "Games", "Utilities", "Communications", "Media", without breaking other parts of the system
    * Something else I haven't thought of
    Thank you very much!

    Tony
I don't think it's advisable to mess around with the Menu Bar for this sort of thing, although I believe there are some Unsanity haxies that do so.
Why not put a folder in the right of your Dock? This can have subfolders in it as well—in fact I have my Applications and Utilities folders there. I also have a folder full of aliases to Office applications there.
    This doesn't break anything!

I prefer Ubuntu with the KDE desktop enviornment for flexibility, but I can't many programs there - so I end up back with Windows. So I dual boot - a lot. My wife loves Windows as she doesn't want to learn a new OS. I have tried to tell her that Ubuntu has barely any learning curve, and she states 'it has *a* learning curve, period, so I won't use it, period.'.
Which is why Windows is domininating the market. The only reason. (being that everyone knows it, therefore software designers only make programs for it.)
I don't like Mac on principle, but acknowlege that the computers themselves are decent quality - but should be dipped in gold to equal the value of their prices.
