  • Dual Boot Ubuntu and Windows 8.1 on HP ENVY dv7

Okay, I've installed 14.04 LTS with EFI and Secure Boot enabled. My problem is that the HP automated boot process ignores the presence of Ubuntu and boots directly into Windows. The only way I can boot into Ubuntu is to intercept the boot process by pressing the Escape key immediately, selecting Boot Device options (F9). choosing "Boot from EFI File", then pressing Enter on the next page (a description of the hard drive), choose EFI from the next screen, select "<ubuntu>" from the subsequent list, the select "shimx64.efi" from the next screen, which gives me the Grub list (without, I might add, any reference to Windows!) So, while it works, it is a laborious process at best. Have tried to follow the following post from an HP help forum:
So, until HP releases an updated UEFI that allows turning this "feature" off or rearranging boot options through the F10 UEFI setup, this is what you can do to get dual boot with the least amount of hackiness:
In Windows, mount the UEFI partition (mountvol S: /S mounts it as the S: drive) and copy the file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi to use some other name (for example, I copied it to "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~", but you can change the name to anything else).
In the Windows command prompt, update the Windows UEFI entry to point to the new name: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~ (adapt to your set name accordingly).
Optionally, change the name of the Windows boot loader so that you would be certain that it points to the new file location: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} description "Fixed Windows path"
Install the other OS. In my case the bootloader was installed into \EFI\opensuse\grubx64.efi.
Delete the two files, \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi and \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi.
Use efibootmgr to delete the "OS boot Manager" entry: sudo efibootmgr -b 0000 -B
Set the new OS bootloader to be the default bootloader by using efibootmgr with the -o option. In my case, I had an entry called "opensuse" in slot Boot0001 and the updated path Windows entry in slot Boot0002, so I had to do sudo efibootmgr -o 0001,0002
Update GRUB to point the Windows entry to your renamed file (you'll have to create a new file in /etc/grub.d and rerun grub-mkconfig).
Was able to do everything as posted except "Delete OS boot Manager", because there is no entry for that item when I run efibootmgr in Ubuntu terminal. I did reorder the boot order using efibootmgr so that Ubuntu was first and Windows was second, but the HP OS boot Manager changes it back!
Would really appreciate any help.  Thanks in advance.

    Hey vikas_g,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
With Ubuntu not recognizing your partitions during installation, some information that may be of assistance to you, could be in this document 'Frequently Asked Questions About Linux (FAQs)'.
If your question is not answered from this document, I would suggest asking your question on the Ubuntu Forums.

  • Ubuntu and Windows XP Faster than Arch Shock Horror! (In Virtualbox)

Hello.  I'm just trying out Virtualbox in a Windows host with Ubuntu, XP and Arch, and the outright loser in terms of performance is Arch.  This is the absolute opposite to normal installation of these OS's on any machine I ever used.  Arch normally piddles all over Ubuntu and XP in terms of speed.  Instead, programs take ages to load, even stuff like terminal emulators, firefox and opera work rubbish (especially when trying to play flash video), and boot time is noticeably slower (despite my terrifying attempts at hacking the files described in the How to Boot Arch faster Wiki, thank goodness for the snapshot facility).
The host has 1Gb RAM, 128MB graphics memory, and I allocated 256Gb RAM and 24Mb graphics memory to each virtual machine.  The other two guests run very well.  For normal internet use there is very little performance drop.  In Arch I am running xfce4 as a DE/WM and using firefox/opera as web browsers.  I installed guest additions, added my daemons...it should work good, dammit!!!
I saw somewhere that Arch just flat out doesn't really like being in a virtual environment, is this correct?  Regardless of the answer, does anyone have any useful tips and tricks that might speed things up a bit?  It's like Virtual Ubuntu is pointing and laughing at the poor thing...

Wra!th wrote:Latest Ubuntu is ftw. No doubt about it. I mean it's like 3 times faster (atleast boot-wise) than Arch, and starts like 3 times more daemons than a configured Arch.
In-desktop it's not at all slow. Works better with effects out of the box on my laptop than arch with any type of compositing.and it took absolutetly no configuration. it was all ootb...
Any hard statistics comparing Ubuntu 9.04 and Arch? It would be nice to get some numbers...
Edit: O.K. I see you put some numbers up above. 40-50 seconds for Arch? I've never had an Arch boot take that long. How many daemons are you running?

  • Lexmark x6675, for Ubuntu and Fedora but not Arch?

    Alright, I've got a this printer, a Lexmark x6675
    http://www1.lexmark.com/products/view/A … 79-product
And so there are Linux drivers for it. Unfortunately they are executable files which I can't extract the files from directly:
    http://support.lexmark.com/index?locale … 33847975#2 (click downloads)
They come in rpm, and deb excutables (you'll see what I mean -_-), and I tried installing it onto an Ubuntu laptop which after could operate the printer perfectly, and I copied the files I knew were installed (the ppm, and some lexmark drivers in /usr/lexinkjet) but it still cannot recognize the printer it is connected to. All it can detect is an "unknown" upon which I install the drivers, it doesn't respond and the job goes from processing to stopped. However, I am doing this in the Gnome Cups manager which might be at fault (I am going to check that now).
I know the device is connected, and the SD card reader on the printer is actually recognized and registered as a removable device (just like it does in Windows).
This is the only think stopping me from a perfect Arch Linux setup on my desktop. Anyone know how to get these drivers working, or knows an alternative? Any suggestions are welcome. There is nothing in the AUR or Pacman that seems to support this printer
And oh yeah, this is my first time posting on these forums. Please be nice

    Hi,
For 64bit, try installing following packages, it might work:
    pacman -S cups lib32-gcc-libs lib32-heimdal lib32-libcups lib32-gnutls lib32-libstdc++5 lib32-sqlite3
This driver is packaged using nixstaller - that the reason behind weird formats.
Also,Try Extracting the driver embedded inside the shell script using
    $ mkdir driver
    $ sh lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.rpm.sh --target driver
there driver is in instarchive_all file which has filesize of 8mb.
    So, lets extract it
    > tar -xvvf instarchive_all --lzma
    -rwxr-xr-x build/build 160 2010-02-23 13:19 printdriver.te
    -rw-r--r-- build/build 22502840 2010-02-23 13:19 lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.rpm

    -rwxr-xr-x build/build 9670 2010-02-23 13:19 lsusbdevice
Now you need to install rpmextract and extract files inside the rpm
    $ pacman -S rpmextract
    $ rpmextract.sh lexmark-08z-series-driver-1.0-1.i386.rpm
    #Here are driver files, finally!

  • Accessing USB HD Switching between OS X and WinXP

In a box with Fusion 3 using both 0S X and winxp, the USB HD(sea_disk) shows in the upper right under the Mac HD. If I want to connect it to the XP do I need to "Eject sea_disk" before using the connect to USB HD in windows?
Is there a way that I can access the USB HD with windows and mac when it is still on the Mac desktop? or vice-versa?

Our main issue with Safari is that it does not allow one to unblock pop-ups for individual websites. Some financial and gov sites require you to run pop-ups active. Firefox allows you but it goes nuts when it tries to download or access pdf files. The only way to shut it down is to force quit. And then there are 1000+ files in the download folder. Granted they are zero data but still a bit of a pain deleting them all.
One of us uses Office at work and the OSX doc and xls programs really do not like the files she has. They have a lot of problems with the formatting and embedded commands. So we know that at least with the VM loaded we can deal with that. We were led to believe that there wasn't any problems with using/editing those files between both OS's. Apple sales people said "We do it all the time"
The other program we have having problems with is Nikon ViewNX. I do a lot of photographic work and one of the reasons we went mac was that everyone said how good it was for digital photographic work. I haven't been able to do anything with it because it will not run the Nikon software. Afraid I never had these kind of issues with ms. Yes it ran slow but at least it worked. (ran slow due to lack of RAM)

  • Ge4600Ti "artifacts" in BIOS and WinXP

I have just setup a new system. I took my Ge4600 out of my old P4 system (no past problems working fine). Put it in my new system (875P Neo) and now my display is corrupted both in POST, BIOS and WinXP (redraw problems in XP, wrong letters in BIOS, artifacts in POST). The system runs fine with my old RIVA in it.
I then put the Ge4 back in my old sytem (no HD installed) and the POST screen shows the same problems. Im pretty sure I didnt damage it removing/installing. I did remove a lot of dust which had clogged the HSF.
Any suggestions? Should I continue to try other drivers? When installing the latest Detonator I get a Stop Error (Blue Screen). Is my card damaged?

    It doesn't look good
But from your explanation I see that the problem started when you moved the card and then the problem followed to another system. You have basically answereed your own question by following the technique I would have used by trying it in another rig. Yes I think the card was somehow damaged by either static discharge or a small surface mount device such as a transistor, resistor or capacitor may have fallen off during handling, hard to say.

  • Ubuntu and Shared folders, I need help

Installed Ubuntu 14.04 Guest and updated and all good.
Followed instructions on this page and almost all good
    http://theholmesoffice.com/how-to-share-folders-between-windows-and-ubuntu-using-vmware-player/
Ran this command and it shows the drives and folders that I defined as Shared-Folders
    vmware-hgfsclient
Ran this and it put shortcuts on the desktop
ln -s /mnt/hgfs/shared-directory ~/Desktop/Name-of-the-folder  {edit} Yes, I used the real Shared Folder names
If I double click on the shortcut OR try to copy a file to it from Ubuntu, I get
This link cannot be used because its target “/mnt/hgfs/shared-directory” doesn't exist.
    Where am I going wrong?
And, how do I make it work?
Also /mnt/hgfs is empty even with Ctrl-H
Also edited the fstab file as per...
    VMware Workstation 10 Documentation Center
    .host:/ /mnt/hgfs vmhgfs defaults 0 0
Rebooted Ubuntu and got an error "Error mounting hgfs - S=skip, M=manual fix."
    I skipped.

And, how do I make it work?
Also /mnt/hgfs is empty even with Ctrl-H
If /mnt/hgfs is empty the share isn't being set up correctly.  If the shared folders output in the vmware hgfsclient command appears all I can think is possibly the second command creating desktop shortcuts is in error.  I'm confused about what is actually "shared-directory" and "Name-of-the-folder".  They should be the same.  That particular step shouldn't even be be necessary if the share was actually established.  Normally all you need to do is create a desktop link to the shared folders once they are visible in the /mnt/hgfs directory.  You could try everything again. leaving that part out and going directly to /mnt/hgfs to see if it might be the source of the problem.
Another option is to take a look at the links posted in this message two days ago - Re: complete, total and utter failure to get shared folders working in VM Player - host W7, guest Lubuntu (various versions)  The patch script is backward compatible with numerous Linux kernels so it should work on Ubuntu 14.04 which uses 3.13.  If for some reason it doesn't, you can rerun the unpatched VMware Tools distribution and be back where you are now, none the worse for wear.
    Good luck,

  • Are the ubuntu and OSX Terminals similar in their usses.

    Hi There,
I recently downloaded ubuntu and installed it onto desktop PC as the primary operating system, so that I can learn how to use the Terminal without messing up my very expensive Mac.
My friend told me however that the Terminals in ubuntu and Mac do not work the same, so was my idea of learning to use the Terminal in ubuntu so as not to mess up my Mac a bad idea and are the Terminals and the way you use them at least similar.

Thank you both for your replies. You both gave me different information relevant to my question and I am having a hard time to decide whose answer to chose as the 'solved answer'.
Assuming you do not get an "Even Better" answer, give the "Solved" to Kappy, as I was lounging around in bed while he was being industrious
Thanks also for pointing out that I can install OSX on a smaller partition of my HDD. I didn't actually know I could run the same OS on two separate partitions of the same HDD. My question then however, would be: How do I still make my primary partition loads as default, while still being able to select my smaller partition for learning how to enter and process commands via the Terminal?
System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> Select the system you want to use to starup your computer
You can also boot while holding the "Option" key, which should give you a screen with all the bootable partitions. You can then use your mouse/trackpad cursor to select the partition you wish to boot from now.
I think I will leave this question open for a little longer to see what other people post, but I just wanted to thank you both for taking the time to respond to me and thank BobHarris for pointing me to the correct forum in case I have any further inquires.
There are some books on using the Mac OS X command line. NOTE: I AM NOT recommending any of these books, as I have not read them (I learned Unix back in '85, using "The Unix Programming Environment" book by Brian Kernighan and Rob Pike; still in print and it still has a lot to offer, however, it was published long before Mac OS X; but if you want to learn Unix fundamentals, there is nothing better than authors that also helped write many of the early Unix commands and utilities, and rubbed elbows with the Unix and C creators).

  • PM7 and WinXP SP3

Following a disaster, I replaced the primary HDD on my home PC with a brand new one last wekend.
After re-installing WinXP, MSO2K3, CS2, the thousands of updates which took hours and a call to Adobe for new activiation code as I wasn't able to de-activate, there being an HDD failure, I can confidently assert that PM7 (followed by the updates to PM7.0.1a) installs perfectly. And yes, there is a minor error/typo somewhere in the PM7.0.1a update which calls it PM7.0.1.
And my positively ancient T1 fonts (Gill Sans, Times New RomanPS and Courier) from 1991 were all added by the windows Font manager as expected and without a hitch.
Export… AdobePDF… also worked perfectly first time with PM figuring it all out by itelf with Distiller 7.  (My default printer is an HP Laserjet 2300PS which probably helps.)
So for anyone who is having problems with PM7 and WinXP SP3, I can only conclude that years of accumulated windows junk is where to look.
As they say with windows, if a re-boot doesn't solve, re-install!

Not enough information, but my best guess is a: INstalling SP3 always
reenables the (new) Firewall. Potentially your GPO doesn't always take,
    and needs several reboots.
But to find out what's going on, the details of the clntrust status is
needed, and potentially a lan trace. If the clntrust tstus doesn't show
any requests (and that's my guess), then my guess becomes almost
    certain.

  • Pre-configured dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows

Of possible interest to the Linux folks: A newly opened Laptops with purpose store is now offering several popular ThinkPad models fully pre-configured with dual-boot Ubuntu Linux and Windows.
These systems come with a lot of pre-installed applications, see Dual boot Linux and Windows page for details.
At the moment, we are working on specific solutions for students, educators, scientists, designers...
Would love to have some feedback from the community on the existing offerings as well as suggestions/wishes for the future ones.

That would be fine if some hp machines didn't have broken UEFI that don't respect setting the default OS.

  • Resuming from suspend with Ubuntu 11.04 fails on Thinkpad 121e when using OCZ Agility 3 SSD

    Hi,
On my Thinkpad 121e (model 30515RG), Ubuntu 11.04 worked flawlessly with the stock hdd. Suspend and resume were fine. After I replaced the hdd with an Agility 3 120 GB drive, the system will suspend fine (pulsating leds, etc) After I attempt to resume, I get the thinkpad beep, the resume starts and than fails. The filesystem used in both cases is ext4.
If I suspend before I log in, while only gdm is running, the system will come up, but will not function as it can not read any file from the disk, reporting missing inodes, etc.
If I suspend after being logged in, I might get a visible cursor, but nothing more.
The drive has the latest version of firmware installed. Any suggestions ?
    Thanks!

  • Winxp 64bit with ThinkPad W520

    Dear All,
for last time we purchased ThinkPad W520 ,  we receive it with Win 7 64bit , but we want work with Winxp 64 bit,
Anway, I'm tried to install Winxp 64 bit and to install driver , But no any driver work fine else the Network Ethernal adapater.
I don't know what is the problem i made update for Winodws .
When i try to install for eample the video card ,it's start extracting the files, then when the last windows apear that say finish ,i checked the box to start install video card, but it's dispare and nothing happend.
And for sure i change this option in BIOS ,  Disable the optumus from BIOS, and make it discrete graphics.
Same for USB3.0 not work also...
I hope there is way to fix drivers in Winxp 64 bit.
    Thank u.

While I never tried Winxp64 bit on my W520, I have tried using it before. It has a lot of driver issues like that because it was a very rare products so most 64bit drivers where desined for vista and up(Same with a lot of 64bit programs). Some will work but most have installer checks that have to be tricked into thinking that you are on a vista or higher machine. Personally I feel that the changes Microsoft made in Windows 7 (both under the hood and UI) have major benifits and see very little reason to try to stick with xp.
