  • IPod not recognized by iTunes, Windows Vista prompts to format iPod drive

    Hello,
I have IPod 80GB which I rarely use. Yesterday  when I wanted to use it, I went to add a few new audios to it, connected to my computer and launched iTunes. I added the folder which contained audios to iPod, synced it and wanted to disconnect, but iTunes took excepionally long to finish.
When I clicked on 'eject' icon, I go a message saying 'some files are being accessed' or something like that. I waited for 5-10 minutes but it won't finish up, so I unplugged my iPod as I had to leave.
Later when I wanted to play, I noticed I had no audios in iPod at all.
Later when I got home, connected it again to computer, launched iTunes, but iTunes won't show iPod. A few minutes later, windows (Vista) prompted a message saying that it needs to format N: drive (which was iPod).
I tried diagnostics on tis site, restarted/reset iPod etc, but it didn't solve the problem. I removed and reinstalled iTunes as per instructions, still no use.
Then I called Apple support Canada and the guy on the phone said I need to pay to get support. He said he'd send me some documents via email which would solve the problem and hen I wouldn't have to pay. I gave him my email address, but so far I have recieved no emails from him. I have checked my spam and junk folders, just in case, but nothing there.
Anyhow, this issue came up all of a sudden, there has been no physical damage to iPod, I barely use it. maybe for few minutes here and there a month. I have had numerous problems in the past every time a new iTunes update come, it always creates problems. Last year I spent many hours after iTunes update make iPod unrecognizable so I had to go back to older version, then upgrade etc. I don't remember how I solved the issue, but it took a while and it turned out to be something of iTunes version issue.
I wonder if this is another of such issue. I hope its not a hardware issue with iPod. I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks

I just got Vista too and it does recognize my ipod, but itunes can't find a lot of my songs on the computer. I tried to uninstall itunes and reinstall it thinking that it would seach for new music when I installed it again but nothing new happened when I did that.

  • How to Format external drive previously formatted for NSLU2

    Windows XP.
I've had two external hard drives connected to my NSLU2 for several years.  Always worked properly.  Nevery any problems accessing files from either drive.  Now, I'd like to remove one external drive and no longer use it with the NSLU2 (Disk 1).  I just want to use it as a "regular" external drive and connect it directly to my PC by USB. When I plug it into my PC, it is not visible in Windows Explorer.  When I right click "My Computer" and select "Manage", I can see it in the "Disk Management" section, but there is no drive letter assigned to it.  It has partitions.  When I right click on any partition, the "Format" option is grayed out and cannot be selected.  Also, the "Change Drive Letter..." option is grayed out and cannot be selected.  How can I format this disk back to whatever it needs to be in order to use it as a regular external drive?  NOTE:  I do not need to keep any files on the drive.  I've already transferred the files I need to another drive.  Thanks!

Never mind.  I figured it out.  I downloaded a free utility for formatting large drives in FAT32. The utility ran a quick format in just a few seconds and then the drive became available in Windows Explorer where I can now perform a complete format or just use as-is.

  • How do I get my exfat formatted external drive indexed by spotlight?

Well I own a macbook pro and a Toshiba external drive that orginally came with Texura NTFS software so it could work with Mac. But I decided to format it from NTFS to exfat since I ended up losing the Texura program when I formated my macbook hardrive and I accidentally put the .dmg program on the macbook hard drive before I formatted it. I should have put the program back on the drive but I decided to solve the problem by formatting my drive to exfat. But now my problem is that spotlight will not index the drive.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? or are they any third part applications that I can use to search my external hard drive that act as spotlight alternatives?

To force Spotlight to index the drive open System Preferences->Spotlight; Privacy and add the exfat drive to the list, you can drag it from the desktop or finder, then remove it from the list.
The act of removing a drive from the excluded list causes Spotlight to index the drive.
If that doesn't work post back.

  • Formatting a drive in HFS (Mac OS Standard)?

I pulled my old Mac, an older G4, out of storage to attempt to install Ubuntu linux on it. There seems to be something wrong with the CD drive (DVDs mount, but CDs don't), so installing from the CD is out. I was going to go with the hard drive install method, but here's the (latest) problem I've run into... the docs (https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/ubuntu/installation-guide/powerpc/boot-drive-files. html) tell me the drive I'm installing from has to be formatted HFS, not HFS+. It doesn't seem that I even have the option to format either of the 2 internal drives as Mac OS Standard, only HFS+. Disk Utility also gives me the option of formatting it as "UNIX File System", but unless I'm misunderstanding something, that's not going to help me.
Anyone have any thoughts? Are there any programs out there that'll format HFS for me?
    G5 1.6MHz

    Hi, David -
Did that machine originally come with OS 9? If so, boot to an OS 9 Install CD of appropriate version, and use OS 9's Drive Setup to format the drive as HFS.
Note that if you need to be booted to that volume, you will need to install OS 9 onto it and boot using that - OSX can not use an HFS (Mac OS Standard) volume as a boot volume.
If you do not need to be booted to an HFS volume, and you just need one from which to run the installer, then if you happen to have a Zip drive in that machine you could format a Zip disk as HFS, place the installer on it, and run it from there.

  • IMac and Formatting USB Drive Issues

I have an 8GB USB drive that I formatted to MS-DOS FAT using my iMac with 10.6.4 on it. However I now realise that that was a stupid thing to do as now that drive no longer works on Windows no matter what I format it too. I want the pen to allow me to use it on both WIndows and Mac (hence the FAT format) however Windows sees the drive as an unformatted 200MB drive with 7.16GB of unallocated and corrupted space which cannot be formatted.
Windows cannot even attempt to allow me to format it to gain the 8GB back as it is unable to format the space even when its turned into free (empty) space. Luckily OSx can still use it as normal but it just means I've lost a perfectly work USB drive due to an error in OSx.
Can anyone help to to fix this as I really want it to work and I'm stumped as to how.
    Thanks!

It shouldn't matter as I created the files and folders originally on a FAT formatted drive and copied them to my Mac then back at a later date, at which point an error was encountered and prevented me copying folders to the dive (the contents was fine once removed from folders and sub folders).
I believe Apple has fixed this now, however when I formatted the drive my iMac had this problem so I believe this effected the FAT formatted drive to prevent Windows working with it.
Well I have finally managed to fix the drive. I had to format the drive to free space and then plug it into a Windows 7 PC and then delete the free partition and reallocate it again to FAT 32. Window Vista and XP where an able to do this as they say I didn't have permission to do this and asked for a restart. Strange but atleast it finally works on both machines.

  • HP v165w 8GB formatting error - drive write protected - Windows can't format - HP tool can't format

    Hi,
I am having trouble understanding what happened with this drive. It worked fine for weeks and weeks and now all of a sudden Windows 7 asks me that it needs to fix something because the files are corrupted or whatever... it does that successfully and after a few days I get an error message saying Windows can't access the drive and it needs to format it.
    I did the following:
    - Used Disk management with no luck... tried to format, reassign drive letters and so on.
    - Used HP formatting tool - and this is where I get the message saying the drive is Write protected
    - Used HP formatting tool and Disk management in Safe mode thinking there might be some processes running that are interfering, no luck, same result for both.
    - Used AH320_Utility_LFormat with no luck... it can't even find the USB device.
One thing that catches my eye:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}
has the entry StorageVolumes - UpperFilters (tdrpman ; snapman ; timounter) - LowerFilters (fvevol; rdyboost)
Is it a registry issue? Like we see in CD/DVD drives when they go missing from my computer?
    Is it a MasterBootRecord virus?
    Is it a Windows corruption?
Please help! If you need additional info please ask!
    Thank you!

  • Disk Utility fails when formatting a drive

Hi, I have been having problem with Disk Utility when formatting a drive. Every time I format a drive, regarding of what volume format I choose, it will start the format and then fail shortly after.
The drives are then no longer mountable and Disk Utility will not be able to see the drive any more.
Can some one tell me why this is failing? I have only ever experienced this problem on my Mac Pro.
    Thanks

Thanks, The Hatter. Sorry I didn't include the internal drive information because so far, I have been using disk utility to format external drives and every time I tried to use it to format, it will fail (have not tried to format an internal drive as I only have one internal).
This is the detail of my internal drive.
    Capacity: 298.09 GB
    Model: WDC WD3200AAJS-41VWA0
    Revision: 58.01D01
    Serial Number: WD-WCARW3484394
    Native Command Queuing: Yes
    Queue Depth: 32
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: No
    BSD Name: disk0
    Bay Name: "Bay 1"
    Mac OS 9 Drivers: No
Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
I have tried connecting external drives via, USB and Firewire. Have tried formatting drive to MS-DOS (Fat 32) or MacOS Extended and nothing works.

  • Why can't I write to a removable drive

I hav a removable drive I store photographs on and want to add more from the Mac. I have tried using Photoshop bridge CS4 and also fined to move copies to this drive but it will not allow me. I can do this on my WIndows 7 system pc but not on the Mac. How do I do this please.

Thanks for replying,  I suddenly had a though went intoParalle /Windows 7 and check the sharing. Set them to allow all and give full permission. Then back to to Bridge and it all worked.
By the way I have check the drive and it is formatted as NTFS, this was done as there is a file size restriction on FAT 32. I can access it now with both Windows and Mac.

  • Capturing to removable drives question

    MacOS 10.6.5/ 8 core 2.1/ 6 gig ram/ fibre channel array/ CS5 production premium/ AJA Kona3 / Facilis Terrablock
premiere sees the shared array as a removable drive which in a sense it is. I can mount and unmount partions via a control panel.
on partions to which I have write status it will not let me select those partitions as they are "removable"
Is this how it works? Is there a workaround? How are others dealing with this?
    Thank You
    Doug Beal

i forgot to mention. another option is to format the drive as HFS+ (the mac standard) and use something like MacDrive on the windows side to communicate w/ the drive....

  • Auto-detect & mount disk partitions and removable drives

I use ubuntu in addition to my current wip of installing arch linux. Now i have installed lxde desktop. But i am not able to see any of my partitions of my disk and other hdd. Besides removable drives also dont get mounted.
Similarly if a new partition is created the same also gets autodetected in ubuntu. eg my arch linux partition. I need not go to do any fiddling in the system to recognize the same.
So is it possible to achieve the same under archlinux? So want to know how to get  the same done.
what i want is to have the partitions[ext & ntfs] detected when the filemanager is opened and mount/unmount at my will, just as i do now in ubuntu.
So far what i have done is based on the lxde wiki, i installed the polkit-gnome gvfs package but nothing is mounted.
i would like to have specific instructions to how to work out and get the above  done.
    pls guide to the same.

What do you mean when you say that pcmanfm is not displaying *any* partitions? You see no files at all? Or do you mean: it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab?
I mean it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab. As of now pcmanfm shows only the arch systems partitions which I created while installation : root, and home. Balance of partitions of other systems of the same drive and second hard drive is not shown.
When you say that in Ubuntu, newly created partitions show up automatically, do you mean that if you change the partitioning on your internal drive, the changes are automatically reflected in /etc/fstab?
Yes the changes are automatically reflected in the filemanager of ubuntu, ie. Nautilius. However Ubuntu fstab as you see in the previous post of mine contains no entry to other partitions other than just ubuntus. In the fstab I posted above you can very well see it just shows 4 partitions of hdd1  [similar to the way the arch fstab shows only its own] where it is installed :boot, root, home, swap. Whereas there is two more partitions there viz windows and a ntfs. You don’t see them in fstab, but when you open the nautilius filemanager you can see the drives. See the image link of my filemanger posted below at the end. In that shared data and windows are two ntfs partition of hdd1 where ubuntu is installed. Arch is installed on 2nd hdd alongwith a Ubuntu.289gb partition is a ubuntu LVM along with arch root and arch home you can see.
If you mean that Ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted or when you change the partitioning on one and create a file system, that you can configure to work automatically in arch.
Yes ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on internal drives and also removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted  . As you can see in the image i have posted, it shows all my internal drive partitions automatically. No fstab editing nothing. No fiddling with system files so far i have done in ubuntu. For eg i installed arch a month back, the same you can see is automatically seen in the image. All i required was to   update grub  to recognise árch'. Post that when you boot, automatically the new arch partitions are seen. No fstab fiddling anything. Thus tomorrow morning if i create a new partition on my hdd via ubuntu all i require is to reboot post the creation and i will see the new partition asap.
As you can see in the image all my partitions are seen, the one i want i click it and it gets mounted, if i dont want it stays/gets unmounted. And its not just ubuntu i saw the same in some other distros also like suse, centos, fedora.
As far as the lxde wiki is concerned, there it is mentioned to install polkit gnome gvfs for mounting and i did the same but nothing still happens.
So this is what exactly i am asking how to do the same on my arch system. So if i am guided i wil go ahead and work to achieve the same.

  • Bootcamp utility in OSX Lion tries to format my Drive when i only want to download the support software for my existing install...

So i have a bit of a problem...
im using a Mid 2009 13 Inch Macbook Pro in dualboot.
Im running OSX Lion and Windows 8 Consumer Preview in dual boot, no problems...
However i only have bootcamp 3.x software on my Windows install and i want to install 4.x ...
i know that to get the 4.x software i have to use the Bootcamp utility in Lion to download it, here is where the problem is...
i run the utility and check the box next to download support software and uncheck the rest (i dont want to format my install or remove it) and im prompted for a save location, which i set to my desktop (because i can read it from windows). it then informs me that its trying to format my Drive...  My System drive!?  all i want is the software, nothing else...
is there a way i can download it directly? such as i direct link to the software from the servers?

Read carefully. You have to download the software to a FAT32 formatted USB flash or hard drive.

  • Format external drive partition under 10.2.8

Hello. I have been trying to setup a WD My Book 500gb with 2 partitions to be used as on offsite backup unit for our business computers. We have one Mac (this G5), and 4 Windows stations (3 XP/ 1 98SE). I am trying to setup this unit with one partition using NTFS and the other with Mac HFS or HFS+ file systems. I have found a utility that allows me to format the partition that I intend to use with the Mac as a FAT32 partition. I then tried bringing the WD MyBook to the G5 and reformatting that partition as HFS. When I run Disk Utility, I click on the partition showing as Fat32 under disk2 and then click on the Erase tab, select Mac OS X Extended file system, no OS9 drivers, have tried various names (Mac BU, My Mac BU, My MacBook, etc), then click Erase, Confirm Erase. The progress bar comes up for a moment or so, says that it is erasing the volume, then exits out as if done. Unfortunately, it never mounts the drive and the volume no longer shows up in Disk Utility (only shows the Drive without any recognized partitions) until I close and restart Disk Utility. When I restart Disk Utility, the volume I am trying to format once again shows up under the drive, tho now with no name. Under Identification, it says Mount Point: Not Mounted/ Format: MS-DOS/ Capacity: 116.44gb. After doing some browsing around onthe internet trying to troubleshoot this on my own, I found some reference to Disk Utility logs (supposedly avail in upper right corner, tho didn't find there). I searched in the Library/Logs/Crash Reporter and found 'Disk Utility.crash.log' which says:
    Date/Time: 2008-09-17 21:25:42 -0400
    OS Version: 10.2.8 (Build 6S90)
    Host: Joanns-Computer.local.
    Command: Disk Utility
    PID: 540
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x01215088
Any suggestions on how I might get this partition formatted for a Mac file system? I would use Fat32, but I plan to use RSyncX to backup this G5 and would like to make the backup bootable in case of critical failure. And since I am using this drive as a backup storage device rather than file sharing system, I have no need to access files on either partition from the opposite operating system.
Thanks in advance for any help that can be rendered. Also, if more info or more of the log file is needed to diagnose, please let me know.
PS: Sorry if this is in wrong forum. Wasn't sure if this falls under Setup, Customizing or something else.

You can either format the drive entirely FAT32 that can be used on both Windows and Mac or you can format the drive entirely for the Mac, but you cannot have one partition of each on the same drive (not with Jaguar. You would need Leopard to accomplish that and an Intel Mac.)
There is this article/hint explaining a method for doing so, but I do not know if it is doable with Jaguar. Maybe Panther since the hint appeared about the time Panther was released.
