Ubuntu Installation: buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 2

Hallo
Was bedeutet dies? Läßt sich Ubuntu nicht installieren oder ist die Festplatte kaputt?
Danke für jede Hilfe
Harry

The flash card for CUE might be corrupt. Try and reinstall CUE and restore from backup to see if that fixes it. If it doesnt, try a different flash card.

  • Buffer I/O error on device sdd1, logical block, HDD failure? [SOLVED]

    Hello!
I'm a bit puzzled here to be honest. Granted i'm not using linux as much as I used to (not after windows 7). I have archlinux running on my HTPC. Never had any issues before that was this severe, unless I upgraded and forgot to read news section. Booted the htpc today to be greeted by "Buffer I/O error on device sdd1, logical block" with a massive wall of text, a few seconds later "welcome to emergency mode."
*This is NOT hdd where the linux kernel is residing on. What logical purpose would it serve for the kernel/userspace to abort everything just because fsck fails or something? If this was indeed my linux partition I would fully understand.
Anyways, I used parted magic, ran fsck, smart. Sure enough fsck warned me about bad/missing superblock. Restored the superblock by using e2fsck. I had over 10 000 "incorrect size" chunks. Ran 2-3 SMART after that. fsck says okay, smart gives a 100% status report with no errors.
Oh yeah, I have turned off FSCK completly in my fstab, thinking about at least turning it on my bigger hdds
    Questions:
*Is SMART reliable? If it says it's alright, does that mean i'm safe? Would physical broken sectors turn up by SMART?
*I know SMART warns the user in windows 7 if hdd failure is imment. Is this possible within linux as well? Since i'm NOT using a GUI, is this possible to send through a terminal/email?
*Sometimes the HTPC have been forefully shut down (power breakage), could this be one of the causes of the I/O error?
As always, thank you for your support.

Sorry for the late reply guys. Been busy with my other hdd that decided to screw with me. e2fsck first complained about bad sectors, and wrong size. Now it says all clean. I've decided to remove this HDD from server and mark it "damaged".
Thank you again for your help

    1) Don't trust the 'SMART overall-health self-assessment test result', run the diagnostics (short, long, conveyance, offline). The short and conveyance tests are quick so start with them. If they both pass run the long test. The offline test is supposed to update SMART attributes, but it generally takes longer than the long test, so save it for last if at all. Usually when I see bad drives the short or long tests pick them up.
    2) Look into smartd.service.
greenfish wrote:What logical purpose would it serve for the kernel/userspace to abort everything just because fsck fails or something?
Systemd craps itself if an fs configured to mount during boot can't be mounted, even if the fs isn't necessary for the system to boot. Rot sure about how it handles fsck failures. This 'feature' can be disabled by putting nofail in the fstab options. I add it to every non-essential automounting fs.
Thank you for the useful information. I will save this post for future references.
Will deff look into smartd.service, especially when I have so much data running 24/7.
Will also update my fstab table with "nofail" like you suggested
    Thank You!

I get this error whenever I try to boot up uzume linux.  I know that the ,iso isn't currupted in any way, I've tried to boot the cd in several different machines, burnt it in different burners, done everything I could think of.  So i'm stumped as to what is even causing it.  Any ideas?

I burn't it on a mac with disk utility as well, and disk utility hasn't failed me yet (never had an unsuccessful burn in over a year).  I rebuilt the .iso several times, but to no avail.  The .iso works fine in Virtual Box, so the problem isn't there.  I started having the problems after the new archiso-git update, I think...

    Table 3: 118 col, 360MB, 820,259 rows, avg len 266 bytes
The FTS has improved as expected. With 5 physical drives in a RAID0, a performance of
    420MB/s was achieved.
In the write test on the other hand we were not able to archieve any improvement.
    The CTAS statement always works with about 5000 - 6000 BLOCK/s (80MB/s)
But when we tried running several CTAS statements in different sessions, the overall speed increased as expected.
Further tests showed that the write speed seems to depend also on the number of columns. 80MB/s were only
possible with Tables 2 and 3. With Table 1, however only 30MB/s were measured.
If multiple CTAS can produce higher throughput on writes this tells you that it is the production of the data that is the limit, not the writing. Notice in your example that nearly 75% of the time of the CTAS as CPU, not I/O.
The thing about number of columns is that table 1 has exceeded the critical 254 limit - this means Oracle has chained all the rows internally into two pieces; this introduces lots of extra CPU-intensive operations (consistent gets, table access by rowid, heap block compress) so that the CPU time could have gone up significantly, resulting in a lower throughput that you are interpreting as a write problem.
One other thought - if you are currently doing CTAS by "create as select from {real SAP table}" there may be other side effects that you're not going to see. I would do "create test clone of real SAP table", then "create as select from clone" to try and eliminate any such anomalies.

  • Install from SCSI CD fails: ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30

I have a x86 based server w/SCSI HD and DVD drive.

I hooked up a IDE DVD drive and using same CD installs OK.  Then, once installed, I switch my DVD back to SCSI that failed the install, and guess what?  Arch booted from my HD now recognizes the SCSI DVD drive, I can mount it and so on.  Looks to me like the install kernel doesn't support my SCSI DVD drive but the installed kernel does.
I need the Arch install to work from the SCSI DVD drive on my system.  I'm trying to develop an Arch distro for my particular system, which there are about a dozen of in the field, they all have SCSI DVD and no IDE drives.  Will I have to add a SCSI driver to the boot kernel?  Or is my problem something else?
    I notice there is no /dev/disk/by-label (ther is a /dev/disk/by-id  by-label  and by-uuid).
    I do a:
    "[ramfs /]# lsmod | grep sr_mod"

  • Error usingEXE/Building Installer, and cFP .iak error

I built my app and created an .EXE, however when I run it, I get the error(see image error1.jpg) "Cannot Load the browse dialog. Some necsessary components are missing.to correct the problem, reinstall the driver software that is associated with this control." when I try to bring up the Filedpoint browse dialog. This when ra on the computer with LV8.5 full devel. version. If I just run the VI, everything works fine.
Also, when I try to build an installer, I get these errors: (see image)
And then the final question, whenever I shut down labview, I have to open MAX, create a new .iak file, "find devices" for each FP-device and then press "start" so I can see the current values. Then I have to remove the FPdevices from my project, and readd them (new targets and devices), (importing the Fieldpoint configuration does not work). then it all works again untill I close labview. might it be associated with the fact that I cannot save the config file in the project? (see image) when I close the window again, the configpath is gone and when I clock add it says "warning, error saving file".
    thanx.

I've just found temporary (let's say) solutions:
    About my exe:
test editor for cFP, so I have to allow user to set cFP chanel (let's say DO1), set description, and create table of boolean values.
I want to use cFP "Browse" dialog, but:
there is a VI called "FP get Configuration Info.vi" (Functions>>Measurements I/O>> FieldPoint>> Advanced>>cFP Get Configuration Info)
Set path to *.iak file, define configuration name, communication resource (MAX's cFP name) and device name (l.s: cFPAI-111@3) and operation  get item list (long string)
It will get us all input adreses at module cFP-AI-111 and next module and so on...
So user will operate at ring or listbox to select cFP channel what is, hmm... proper solution when he isn't connected to cFP at my exe.

  • Error initializing server: IO Error: The device is not ready

Hi, I copied JDev 10.1.3 on my notebook and when I tried to start embedded OC4J I get the following message:
Error initializing server: IO Error: The device is not ready
    What should I do? Thanks

If I read correctly, you just copy the existing jdev installation on your PC to your notebook. That sounds like a very dubious practice to me. As seen by you in this particular example, hard-coded non-relative paths, host information, environment settings and etc begin to creep into various configuration or preference files once a piece of software go alive.
Any problem to start a new installation to your notebook?

  • Hostapd `EAPOL TX: no buffer space available' error

Hi guys, I have just configured hostapd with NAT to let my smart phone use wired network. At first, it worked normally. But recently I found that sometimes, the connection between the AP and my phone seemed to fail after some time, especially when there are some other devices connecting my AP. Here 'fail' means no packets can be transfered between the two devices and any new device cannot establish a connection with the AP. It seems that at that time, my wireless device only broadcast an SSID, and when I look at the terminal, there are nothing uncommon except some `nl80211: EAPOL TX: no buffer space available' errors. When I tried to let my AP work again, I found that seemingly any actions, except restarting my laptop, does not work. I tried googling, but no luck.

Please help me. At least let me know meaning and cause of the error message.

    Bonjour,

  • Installation fails with "internal error 2502"

I have a client running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition (32 bit) and my app's CVI-built installer fails with "Internal Error 2502".
This installation kit has been successfully deployed on hundreds of computers with various versions of Windows and I have never seen this one. No device drivers or advanced libraries - just the standard runtime. I use CVI 9.0.1.
Searches reveal very little - some old issues with Office installation, date/time settings etc. but I have yet to find anything that indicates what this error represents.
Any insights or ideas very welcome.
    Thanks,
    Ian
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That appears to be a Windows Installer (MSI) error, and can have many different causes. Can you confirm that anyWindows installers (perhaps try newest Adobe Reader) work on that system? Is the system's date/time set correctly? Could there be a permissions restriction with C:\Windows\system32 or C:\Programs\National Instruments\Shared?
I'd also try doing an internet search for "installer error 2502" and see what other tips you might find. If all else fails, try running the installer from the command line like this:
    setup.exe /log install_log.txt
That will generate a log file that might contain a hint for us.

  • HT3669 Unable to run the HP All-in-One Installer for LJ 3055 -- Error message says I need to install Rosetta

I have an HP LJ 3055 All-in-One.  Previously, I haven't used it connected to my Mac (i.e., only in 'standalone' mode).  I now want to use the unit's software for faxing and scanning purposes.
However, when I insert the CD that includes the HP All-in-One Installer, I see an error message saying:
"To open LaserJet AIO Installer, you need to install Rosetta.  Would you like to install it now?"
I assume this is related to the CD's having been produced contemporaneous with Tiger, not Snow Leopard -- though I have no idea why it's prompting about Rosetta, since this is a Macintosh installation CD.
Can anyone inform me what I need to do to install the software (i.e., to run the installer) under Snow Leopard, so that I can access the All-in-One's functions via the Mac?
    Thanks.  Replies appreciated.

Responding to two of your posts here...
Thanks.  It wasn't (and still isn't) clear to my why I was getting the prompt about installing Rosetta.  While using the unit with Tiger, I never saw anything about a need for Rosetta (i.e., nothing indicating that any of the software on the CD was pre-Intel).
Printing continues to be available from the Mac but nothing else is supported via the computer.  Scan, fax and copy are available only directly from the unit.
Funny that this can happen with a unit that continues to work perfectly well, without a hitch.  You'd think that OS upgrades would, if anything, enhance software control of a unit -- rather than eliminate it completely.
★ Is there any reason to think that going the 'Rosetta' route would restore the lost functionality (in 10.6.8)? ★
    Thanks.
The reason you were getting the prompt about installing Rosetta now is because Rosetta was automatically installed on OS X 'Tiger' 10.4 and 'Leopard' 10.5. HP didn't mention it as a requirement, because at the time, it was already there and invisible.
Rosetta became an optional install on OS X 10.6, because (I presume) the number of programs and devices still using pre-2006 PowerPC code and thus needing Rosetta, was in steady decline. Why add extra clutter to (this is my guesstimate) 85% of the Macs running Snow Leopard that DO NOT need Rosetta?
In my opinion, it cannot hurt to install Rosetta now.
Only programs (your HP drivers) that REQUIRE Rosetta will even attempt to use it.
The scan fax and copy functions don't work now with Snow Leopard, so at worst, they still won't work.
You can always delete Rosetta again if you need the disk space.

If I correctly understand how Rosetta worked, it created an emulation environment in which certain software (including 'multifunction printer' drivers) would work, the implication being that these software products were not specifically written for the Mac OS.
However, wouldn't those drivers still also have to be supported by the Mac's currently-installed OS in order to work -- as they were in Tiger and Leopard (but are not in Snow Leopard)?

  • Satellite P300-156 - driver detected controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1

    Hi
I have recently installed a secondary hard drive in my P300-156 and am having some problems with it. I keep getting Event ID 11 in the system event log "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1." and suffer with very bad performance with this drive.
The drive is new and works fine in other systems and even works ok if I swap drive bays on my P300-156 but the problem with that is the drive does not fit in the other bay as it is quite thick. The drive in question is a Samsung HM100UI 2.5" 1TB Sata. I have also tried other drives in this bay and they work ok too.
I am using windows 7 ultimate and Intel chipset drivers. It's an Intel ICH8M SATA AHCI controller, driver version 7.0.0.1013. Have tried different drivers and AHCI/IDE mode. Also tried a fresh installation and the problem persists.
Am at a loss why this drive is having problems is there anything else someone can suggest to try?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks!! This worked! It seems the Intel INF auto update utility didn't update them to the latest. I had to download the [RST and AHCI Driver and GUI|http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=20110&lang=eng] and manually search for new drivers in device manager. Now the drive is noticeably quicker and error free :)
Thanks for all the help guys :)
