Ubuntu on s10-3T ???
Im curious about exploring UBUNTU on my new netbook! But I need to know if Ubuntu will support the s10-3t?
Tablet support?
Touchscreen support?
Auto screen rotation?
Etc Etc...
Does anyone have any info on this?
if you have ubuntu cd ( or download iso file from here ), you can try it on your own without installing ubuntu on your system.
just insert the disk into rom, and select "run without installation" and check for issues.

Linux or Ubuntu on an S10 Netbook
I have a Lenovo S10. It runs great, but in the spirit of gadgetry and curiosity, I would like to see what Linux or Ubuntu would be like on my S10. I would love to be able to boot it up from a USB drive. I have tried to read and understand the various online articles on this sort of project, but just couldn't figure it out. I was wondering if someone helpful and patient could explain to me how to get Linux/Ubunto or some variant to boot up from a USB drive on my S10.
Thanks in advance for yoru help.
[email protected]Go to Google and do a search for unetbootin-windows-282.exe
That program will create a boot image on a USB drive. It allows you to select one of a variety of versions of LInux/Unix or UBUNTU to put on a USB. I have been playing with it and running it to put differnt variants of linux on my 8 GB Sandisk Cruzer.

Audio Problems w/ ThinkStation S10 and Ubuntu/Mint/Suse
ThinkStation S10 6483-27U (onboard audio through Intel chipset, I think the codec is Analog Devices 1988)
Problem: no audio from internal speaker under Ubuntu 8.10 (32 or 64 bit); Mint 6 (32 bit); or OpenSuSE 11.1 (32 or 64 bit). I do get audio from front speakerphone jack and rearspeaker jacks. Internal speaker audio works fine under PC-BSD and Windows Visa.
Attempted solutions that don't work: followed all directions on Ubuntu howto (per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting); follow "Rob's" directions at http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=Special_Interest_Linux&thread.id=316&view=by_dat... (recompiled and reinstalled ALSA) and most of what's on the SuSE boards (at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:AudioTroubleshooting).
Anyone using any of these three with working audio on an S10?
Thanks.
mod edit: added "ThinkStation" to title to prevent confusion
Message Edited by erik on 01-03-2009 08:24 PMhi,
i found a solution at linux-tested
http://www.linux-tested.com/results/lenovo_s10_6423-27u.html
you need only to change the modprobe.d/alsa.conf and add these lines:
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig

How to install ubuntu netbook version 10.10 on lenovo s10-3
I hate the win 7 and want to install linux ubuntu remix netbook edition v 10.10 on it.. How do i go abt it?
i have 4 drives(50,60.60.60GB resp total 250GB ).. and have win 7 installed on c drie(50GB).. noob here so do lemme know if there is a step by step process or if i need to take care of anything before that...
thanks in advanceThe recovery software works with a hidden partiiton and a particular disk schema (X GB for Windows,s and Z GB for User data). Basically, it will restore your partitions contents.
If you change that schema, maybe you will have problems (at least, if you modify the hidden partition). So, that's why I asked you if you have OneKey Recovery installed.
You can get a Windows 7 Home Basic DVD and use your serial number. In that case, you can do anything with your laptop.
Another option is t otake out that disk, connect it on a desktop PC and makea disk image.

[Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t] Waking up from suspend not working properly
Hi,
I'm having some issues with getting suspend to work on my S10-3t. I tried pm-utils and the s2ram script (with about any combination of options as my machine is not on the whitelist) and always get the same behaviour: Suspending seems to succeed but waking up takes about 5 minutes.
I tried using pm-suspend under ubuntu 10.10, works flawlessly out of the box, so it *can* be done.. somehow.
Apparently this was a kernel related issue in older versions of ubuntu too, I couldn't quite figure out how they fixed it though (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/598664).
I tailed the pm-suspend.log and kernel.log through one suspend/wake up cycle, here's the output:
pm-suspend.log:

S10-3 Screen Brightness Linux work around
I am running Mint 9 and Ubuntu 10.04 on my S10-3. Very happy with the platform overall, but as many have found their screen brightness keys do not work. My web research indicates that the latest kernels will have a fix, but that probably won't be commonly available until the end of 2010. In the mean time I have implemented the following to get easy control over the brightness. It's not perfect but it gets the job done. Create three launchers on the desktop with one each of the following commands. Select the screen brightness icon and title each launcher as Low, Med , High Low> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=35 Med> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=55 High> sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 f4.b=75 credit to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/538256 http://lgallardo.com/en/2010/08/31/control-del-brillo-de-lenovo-s10-3-video-gma-3150-on-linux/
Maybe this topic is outdated, but probably this info will be useful for S10 linux users: official ubuntu kernel 2.26.35-25+ works good. This means new Ubuntu, Mint 10 and similar forks works good with brightness adjustment with no additional tools or tweaks.

Disk read error when installing new OS on S10-2
Hello all.
I`ve looked thru this forum and knowledge base, but couldn`t find an answer so I`m appealing to the Lenovo community.
I recently purchased a S10-2 netbook in Mexico. Unfortunetely it`s in Spanish and I need English.(I`m writing a computer book and I need screen captures in English.) I don`t have a phone to call tech support or an external CD drive. I`ve sucessfully setup a dual boot with Ubuntu via USB flash drive. First I tried installing from a XP disk image (XP Pro and XP Home) using Power Iso, but when it rebooted, I received a disk read error. Then I tried extracting the installation files to the D-drive, rebooting to a command prompt, and installing directly. After going thru the initial setup screens, it went thru the motions of copying the installation files to the system, but when it rebooted, once again I received a disk read error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Garryrun disk check before installing anything, you may have dead bad sectors on your hard disk.
if it's possible, remove your hard disk and install it under other computers. -

I've had my S10 for a couple of months. At first, the wireless worked just fine, but a few weeks ago I was using it and, all the sudden, I lost my connection. When I went to the wireless setting page, it could not see any networks, even tho several networks were in range. My wireless button near the power button is on, and the FN F5 button confims that. I have looked all over for a solution to no avail. Can anyone help?
Hi,
or you can check the hardware function , with a little help of an Ubuntu Live CD (or bootable USB-Stick) ...
if that works ... your Windows network is corrupt... reinstall drivers or windows...(or recover it)
if not
your card is gone to bluesky with the angels
i agreed with ronald your wlan-card is faulty...

S10-2 FN+F5 not switching WIFI ON/OFF, BIOS Issue? Broadcom
Hi all,
I've spent the better part of the day researching this issue, and haven't seen much documentation. I have a early 2010 S10-2, 6 Cell in white. 160gb HDD, 1G Ram. Basically exactly as factory. Over the last year the wifi card was not turning on, so I just kind of left it in the corner and used my older macbook more.
Now I need another machine for someone, so I'm getting the lenova back up and on its legs. On investigating what my wifi troubles seem to be, this is what I have determined.
Win 7 Recognizes card, and says is working normally
Win 7 Diagnostics recommend I 'switch on the card'
Installed driver from Lenova site (most recent)
Installed driver from Broadcom site (most recent)
All of this and the card remained 'off' with the Wifi status LED remained off (unlit).
The switch (physical) is in the correct position. (I have tapped FN+F5 with no change) in Win 7.
I then, powered 7 all the way off, and booted to Quick Start. The QS OS recognized the card, but said it was switched off. Also the checkbox to activate the card was unchecked. I checked it. Then, pressed FN+F5 and the wifi card toggled on, saw my wifi networks, and I connected to one.
If I boot out of QS, and into Windows 7, the wifi card remains on, and I can scan, attach and use networks. FN+F5 will not turn the wifi card off (change its state from on to off).
If I power off, and remove the battery, and start back up, I get back to Windows 7 with the wifi card off, and FN+F5 unresponsive. I have to go back through QS, turn the card on, then into 7.
I searched, and found the FN key is actually a function of the bios, not the microcontroller in lenovas, so I upgraded the BIOS, but that has not changed the issue. Tech support told me that my warranty was out of date, so they can't help.
Any one else experienced a similar issue? Of FN+F5 not changing the state? Is there a fix? I am bothered by this because this is supposed to be my rough and ready travel laptop, and also is used by the very basic users, who often have trouble with computers, so I'd like it to be as fool proof as possible (ie, not switching through QS to activate the card, then onto 7).
I am subscribed, and will reply.
Thanks in advance,
John
(Sidebar, anyone noticed a substantial increase from an SSD and 2gb ram in this machine?)Right now I am preferring to keep QS supported and on for two reasons.
First, its provided an older user a very simple and safe interface for getting to a web browser.
Second, its allowing me to activate the wifi card on, since the QS session will register my FN+F5 keypress.
If I exit QS to Windows 7, it will keep the wifi card on.
Though, on more testing, the card has practically no range, or reliability when being moved, and is having trouble making large downloads (trying to grab ubuntu wubi package right now).
Thinking this might just be hardware, though it still doesn't make full sense why I don't have toggle control in 7. Do you have a recommendation for a wifi card? All the cards I found on newegg seemed to be half as tall as needed, and subsequently would not mount in the case correctly. I could not find a 'spec' on the card size, if you would call it that, to limit and filter my searches by. -
S10-2: Wrong Clockspeed. ACPI Table Error [solved]
Hi everybody.
I am proud owner of an S10-2 with an Atom N280 CPU that runs at 1.66 GHz in WinXP. However under Linux (Kubuntu 9.04 and 9.10, as well as other distributions) the maximum CPU clock is 1.33 GHz. The following is the output of cpufreq-info:
cpufrequtils 005: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2006
Report errors and bugs to [email protected], please.
analyzing CPU 0:
driver: acpi-cpufreq
CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 0
hardware limits: 800 MHz - 1.33 GHz
available frequency steps: 1.33 GHz, 1.07 GHz, 800 MHzm
available cpufreq governors: conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave, performance
current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 1.33 GHz.
The governor "ondemand" may decide which speed to use
within this range.
current CPU frequency is 800 MHz.
cpufreq stats: 1.33 GHz:0.00%, 1.07 GHz:0.00%, 800 MHz:0.00% (16821)
analyzing CPU 1:
driver: acpi-cpufreq
CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 1
hardware limits: 800 MHz - 1.33 GHz
available frequency steps: 1.33 GHz, 1.07 GHz, 800 MHz
available cpufreq governors: conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave, performance

within this range.
current CPU frequency is 1.33 GHz.
cpufreq stats: 1.33 GHz:0.00%, 1.07 GHz:0.00%, 800 MHz:0.00%
When I boot the machine with the kernel parameter acpi=off the CPU runs at 1.66 GHz. But this is not a solution as a mobile computer without ACPI is completely useless.
Obviously the problem is an error in the BIOS' ACPI table that misleads the kernel to think the maximum speed was 1.33 GHz.
There is also an Ubuntu-bug describing the problem in more detail:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cpufreqd/+bug/422858
Has anyone else observed similar behavior?
I would be very interested in any kind of workaround or information about how to contact Lenovo and ask for a corrected BIOS.

I'm also experiencing another problem which is probably related to errors in the BIOS

Hi!
I have an old S10-2 that has had troubles starting, and I´ve been reading trough the forum for answers.
But I cant´t find a working solution.
From start:
Installed multiboot program for using Linux and win XP, then the problems began. It started refusing to boot any OS.
But after resets with power buttons and such it would finally awaken.
Then I got tired of it so I decided to wipe the hardrive clean, and making a new clean installation of Win7.
Problem is it wont boot the installation disk properly, so I tried Ubuntu on USB, wont work either.
Although it reads the USB and the External DVD, but it just wont go on.
So I installed the Win7 on the HDD using another computer, it works properly on that computer.
But when I connect it to my Lenovo it´s still the same thing.
It comes to the point where it´s supposed to load the starting drivers. but then everything freezes.
I can only see the loading bar of old Win XP?
But without the Win logo and it just sits there, doing nothing, no progress bar or anything.
Same thing with Ubuntu, loading all the commands and drivers and when it´s about to boot up, it freezes.
I´ve tried numerous ways of wiping the HDD totaly clean, setting up partitions and so, but nothing helps.
Even updated BIOS, but that wont help either...
I really hope someone has a terrific solution!!
Cheers!
//BUnfortunately, in order to gain enough knowledge in the world on how to fix things... you have to make mistakes. This is one of those mistakes you make in your qwest to learn more.
You couldn't have known that Lenovo was doing such strange things. The reason they did it was, they wanted you to have the ability at all times to re-install the operating system the way it came from the factory even if you destroyed everything.
The hidden D: drive holds this magic capability. It also allows you to boot to a Linux system and run a program by just pushing one button. That was a strange and clever thing to do. It, also, is done under the hidden auspices of that D: partition.
In that hidden 30GB partition are all the image files which can be re-installed. This makes it be a magic little computer that needs no CD or DVD drive. Even if you kill the operating system, you just push one button and it reinstalls from the hidden D: partition.
If you wish to reinstall the computer with a different operating system, for example (LIke I did) you have to wipe out the E: drive and install Windows XP or such there, not on the C: drive.
Of course, very few people are doing such things. Most just use the S10 the way it comes from the factory, which is very limited. It's pitiful how powerful the Lenovo S10 is, and how crippled they have made it.
I, for example, run a full Windows XP Professional system on it, have a video driver software which lets me scroll the screen almost six-times the size of the teeny screen they give you, and have Dexpot installed which lets me switch between many different kinds of desktops. I also have over 200 GB of storage in the form of miniscule 32GB MicroSD cards plugged into these super-tiny USB adapters which plug-in to a four-USB hub that's tiny. I've changed out the screen to be a Pixel Qi screen which can be used outdoors.
I did that because I will be using it while on a cross-country bicycle trip and I will be using it with Photoshop to manipulate photos I take. I will be charging it from a folding solar panel by charging an external battery which is 20 Volts, then running it from that battery (solar panel isn't consistent enough for the charging circuitry to not give up if you try running it directly from the solar panel).
So, it's an amazing little computer. I have an old version of Lightwave 3D, Photoshop, a full XP Professional, BartPE USB so I can create my own boot disks, and I could go on-and-on. In fact, I just did a full backup of C, D and E with 100GB filled using EaseUs Todo Backup and then transferred all of the C and E image files to a 64GB Sandisk drive in case my operating system gets completely whapped on the trip.
The Lenovo is amazing. Coupled-up with the Pixel Qi screen it is just stupendous. With Windows XP Professional, an external DVD writer, a folding keyboard and a wireless mouse it's like having a full computer that can be fit into the very tiniest of cases. -
I thought I may as well start a s10 thread as there seems to be a thread for every other netbook. I just received mine and I will post anything relevant to the s10 on arch here. Perhaps others have arch on s10 comments.

Put something like

in your ~/.Xmodmap file, then you can map the XF86Audio* keys to the correct functions in your window manager. This may not be necessary in all window managers but I had to do this before fluxbox would recognize the keypresses.
[b]EDIT: This seems to only be necessary in flux for whatever reason. I'm back to my normal dwm and this messed the keybinds up, so I'll remove them from this thread until I do some further experimenting.
I also found that 866 what the best framebuffer resolution the same way you did
Instead of configuring in xorg.conf, I used hotplugging and an excerpt from a forum post to get the mousepad working correctly. I still have no xorg.conf. I will edit this post with the fdi file I used for the trackpad when I have my s10 with me.
I've tested the webcam, the linux-uvc-svn-all package in the aur works fine for me. The mic on the other hand looks like it needs a newer version of alsa -- http://www.linlap.com/wiki/lenovo+ideapad+s10 reports that .18a worked in ubuntu and the current package available in arch is .18. Alsa has release .19 and I quickly rebuilt the package to see if it would fix my problem but I had no luck. I probably need to rebuild more packages as well.
I have not tested the card reader but I plan on testing that when I get home tonight.

RH Linux 4/5 on S10/D10
I'm thinking of getting a quad core S10 or D10. I do software development and currently am developing under RH3 and/or RH4. We'll be moving to a RH5 base in the future, but am not there yet.
I'm wondering if anyone has implemented RH4 on either the S10 or D10. I think that I'll be able to get the performance that I require on either - but am favoring a 2CPU Quad 4 2.33 Gh (E5410) D10 - mainly because I think that I'll be able to better perform stress testing with the equivalancy of an 8-way system - and like the idea of a large cache. But my big issue is going to be RH4.
Any comments?Well I have had great success with an S10 dual core 3Ghz with 4GB Ram running 32bit Ubuntu desktop. I use it for network management at work and most of the software I need to use is native linux. Ubuntu supports the restricted nVidia video allowing full use of cuboid desktop, transparancy and other whizz bang video features offered by compiz. Hibernate and sleep both work well although I don't use them. I'm also using dual monitors, one of which is a Lenovo 22 inch 1920x1200 LCD panel which is fabulous offering wide viewing angles and bright colours with an easy-on-the-eye matt finish. The keyboard is also great with a soft but positive touch. The only thing I havn't got working is the biometric fingerprint reader but thats because I havn't tried.
I compile most of the software I use rather than using binaries. I havn't had any problems yet.
Its not RH but it is Linux and it rocks. It really feels like linux has come of age, offering superior hardware support, outstanding performance, ease of use and reliable package management. It wipes the floor with windoze but then you already know that.
Hope that helps,
Dom

I've just recieved a brand new ThinkStation S10. I am having lots of trouble getting any operating system to install on it. When I try linux, the initial bootloader starts, but then I get a kernel panic before I can reach the installer. With Windows XP Pro, the installer starts, but hangs when it tries to load the OS files.
When I try to diagnose the problem with memtest, I recieve errors on every address. The errors do show a pattern though, the difference between the expected and read values from the ram differ by exactly FF for every error. (if the correct bit was 00000000 the actual bit would be 000000FF) This looks like a bad motherboard where some of the connections to the RAM are stuck on high. Is there any way to confirm that the motherboard is bad? The S10 is the only system I have that capable of using ECC'd DDR3 ram, so I have no way to independently test the ram. The RAM shows up fine in the BIOS, along with all other components.
Tested OS:
Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit desktop
Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit desktop
Fedora 9
CentOS 5
Gentoo 2008
Windows XP Prowelcome to the forum!
have you tried installing with the BIOS set on compatibility instead of AHCI? it's possible that none of your OSes listed below have native AHCI controllers and are therefore hanging during installation.
did your S10 ship with an OS installed? if so, did it work before you cleared it off of your system?
