UCS C200 + Windows + LACP
Hi,
I am about to install an UCS C200.
Since it's our first experience on UC platform (we wanted to give Cisco Servers a try, and maybe later expand to the whole UC world of fabrics, Nexus, and the like) we opted for the base system (C-Series), and the base operating system (windows 200x on bare metal).
We'd like to aggregate the two LOM NICs to allow failover.
Device is connected to a single switch (a cat 6500), and we though about an LACP etherchannel.
I just found references to configuring LACP / port aggretion on the B-series w/ 6xxx fabric, but nothing on standalone servers
1) is port aggregation performed at CIMC level or should we use OS configuration?
2) since if cards seems to be broadcom, should we use the BACS/BASP sw?
3) in case we use link aggregation, should still be able to use CIMC on LOM NICs, or are we forced to use the dedicated, non-redundant MGMT port?
TIA
Ivan Brunello
You are going to need an LACP software driver for windows. The negotiation will have to happen in the OS. The CIMC is not capable of providing any type of teaming upstream to the running OS. As far as software you'll need to consult Microsoft and Broadcom for the right drivers and code.
If you want to stick with LACP I would but my CIMC on the dedicated CIMC port and not the LOM. If LACP can't come up you might not be able to get to your CIMC.
OS based LACP capability varies. I would play around with it and do some negative testing to make sure it's going to live up to your expectations.

Trying to install Windows 2003 Server on a UCS C200 M1, tried using the server utility but that doesn't seem to work. Installed directly from Windows ISO but I need to install the RAID drivers during install but can't seem to find the .img file to load but need some help finding. Can anyone help me here?
Christopher,
I can let you know that I have had success installing Windows 2003.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/interoperability/matrix/r_hcl_C_rel1.31.pdf
These are the version of Windows 2003 that we support.
The documentation for Windows 2003 install provided has to be followed exactly. This is usually where I see problems. Even steps that seem unnecessary if skipped will cause the installation to fail.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c/sw/os/install/CSERIES-WINDOWS.html
This should not be necessary but this video shows how to include driver files into Windows 2003.
https://csc-test4.cisco.com/videos/1661
Can you let us know at what point in the installation you are seeing a failure and what the failure message is stating?
Have you already set up the Virtual Drive on the RAID Controller before starting the installation? -
UCS C200 M2 - RAID Card R200-PL004 battery back-up
During the installation of a LSI 6G MegaRAID 9260-4i, I'm prompted with the statements "The battery is missing" and "Protect against data loss in the event of a server or power failure by providing emergency power to the cache memory."
Can anyone tell me if the battery back-up (R2XX-LBBU) for the LSI 6G MegaRAID 9260-4i (R200-PL004) is required or just simply a recommendation to prevent loss of data during a power failure? The ordering guide says "Battery Back-Up Option Available" so I'm assuming this is not a mandatory item for purchase.
Please advise.
Thanks,
CHello Chad,
BBU is optional.

UCS C200 M2 LFF can't see disk
DETAILS
Disk - SAS 7.2k 1TB
VMware ESXi v5
I was following the configuration guide http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c/sw/os/vmware/install/VMWARE-esxi-install.html to install VMware ESXi v.5 on a Cisco UCS M2 LFF which has a disk - SAS 7.2k 1 TB. I did the steps from 1 to 9 correctly. However, when I got the number step No. 10, I checked the Boot Options on the BIOS and I didn't find the Hard Disk Order. I'm attaching the screenshot of BIOS - Boot Options that I see:
I checked the UCS option Inventory - Options cards on the Cisco Integrated Management Controller and I didn't find the hard drive, this is the image I see:
Finally, I decided to move the hard drive to another bay (No. 2). However, the result was the same, the BIOS can't recognise the hard drive.
Even though, I tried to install VMware and it can't find the disk.
Any ideas why UCS can recognised the disk?
I really appreciate your help with any information or idea because I'm in a hurry to finish my installation.
Thanks,hi padramas,
i'm experiencing identical situation from this thread.
This server was purchased on ebay where the tech removed the HHD and a raid controller.
i've set the bios to the above same setting.
Recently I purchased new:
Cisco LSI 1064E Mezzanine Card SAS HBA
1 SAS
R200-SASCBL
2 Cisco R200-D300GB 300 GB Internal Hard Drive - Hot-Swap - 15000 RPM - Serial.
the sled are green are lit when the HHD are in place ( these are new HHD)
Used the url below to troubleshoot.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/servers-unified-computing/ucs-c-series-rack-servers/115025-ucs-cseries-cli-00.html#concept2
Followed the the steps and see the HHD and the show pcie-adapter
HDD_01_STATUS present
HDD_02_STATUS present
HDD_03_STATUS absent
HDD_04_STATUS absent
I receive the following
chassis # scope storageadapter SLOT-5 or any SLOT or SAS for that matter
Error: Managed object does not exist, show the show command to list vaild targets.
i've gone so far as to put a stethoscope while the HHD are in the server and can't hear them spinning.
Could it be a jumper setting or a cable that was removed before this server was shipped to me.
this is a lab server so i don't have a smartnet accout to open a TAC case.
thank you advance

Does UCS C200 support CUCM only?
I am trying to install CUCM 8.5 and i am only given the option to install BE.
Is it possible to load just CxN or CUCM?Hi Michael,
CUCM 8.5 is supported on C200 M2 as you can see here http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_Virtualization_Supported_Applications and I have successfull installation of CUCM 8.5 on this type of server (note that the bootable DVD I have is with CUCM 8.5 on it only). Can you elaborate what is happening on your side - do you apply the required OVA template, etc.
Regards,
Vladimir -
This has happened twice so far, where one of the CIMC in one of my C200's would start continually rebooting. It will do this for a couple of hours or so and then finally stop. Afterwards everything appears to be fine and I can't find anything in the logs about it.
Has anyone ever run across something like this. Currently it has happened on two different C200s in my environment.Sean,
Please collect the CIMC show tech and open a TAC SR including approx date / time of the problem event and the SNMP messages.

Also, after collecting the logs, I would suggest you to upgrade to the latest firmware version ( 1.4.1c ) and monitor the server.

I am trying to confirm what side Sata drives can be installed.
Our DC has 2 drives installed leaving the additional bays available. We have a situation where we want to mount a 2tb or larger drive.
What is the largest sat drive that can be installed in this box. I did verify that a standard desktop drive will work in the bay.
Thanks in advance.Hi Ray
Depends on the size of drives your server uses from the spec sheet it looks like the largest SATA drive supported is 1TB for the 2.5inch drives and 500GB for the 3.5-inch, please see spec sheet below for details

Dear folks,
I have a confusion in one of my deployments. My client ordered initially a UCS 220M3 server, which came along with a windows CD. It was supposed to be used as an LMS 4.1 server. Later on there were some variation and customer wants to have prime infrastructure over it. Now I am unable to understand how to do it. The server which came doesnt have any OS. It has one 600 GB hard drive. Can anyone guide me what should i do / or order additionally to work out through this. I am pasting the BoQ for this server which is the original one before variation, the task is to make it work with Prime Infrastructure. Along with this i am attaching some snaps of the physical server and CIMC console...just to clear out any doubts... i will be very thankful if you suggest me the correct way.

1You have the necessary CPU, memory and hard drive specifications for an Express size installation (Reference).
To install Prime Infrastructure 2.0 you will need to first install VMware ESX/ESXi. This is documented in the same Getting Started Guide I linked to above at this link.
Once you get that far along, just follow the setup wizard and installation is pretty simple.
FYI you will get better attention to Prime questions over in the Network Management forum. -
UCS support for ISO install LMS 4.1
Hi,
can we install the ISO LMS 4.1 directly on a UCS platform?
What platform UCS is supported?
Do you have install experiences you can share?
Is the ISO LMS 4.1 a Linux implementation?
kind regards
AdI installed it onto of Windows 2006 R2 on a UCS C200 M2.
You can turn anything into an iso, it just a format of how things are writen on a disk. That's why you can mount and iso file as a disk.
The linux version comes as an ".ova " virtual appliance you can load into a VMware host.
I think the machine could probably run an ESX server and run 2 or 3 LMS servers depending on the number of devices to manage.
For performance reasons buying a bigger box won't help. I've installed LMS on pretty heavy systems and GUI performance remains bad.
I think the problem is with the tomcat part of things. That process is responsable for the web gui. AFAIK Cisco provides no guidance on this.
Cisco says performance will be better in the next version as usual.
Cheers,

Looking into UCS. Do I need UCS Director?
Hello Everyone
I am brand new to UCS. I am getting quotes from Cisco on new UCS system. About a year ago we got quotes for this system to add to next years budget and on this quote there is a new item and that is about 10K for UCS support package.
In reading about this it sounded like this was for really large environments.
Our environment is going to be one chassis and 8 blades. 5 of the blades will be used for Hyper V cluster which is managed by SCVMM and orchestrator for automation. In a few years we may look into getting another system for failover site.
Changes on VM environment are not frequent. About 100 VMs
ThanksIn your environment (almost static), UCS Manager (which doesn't require a license, bundled with fabric interconnect) is ok.
UCS Director (the name is misleading) allows automatic provisioning and automation of the infrastructure (Ethernet and Fibrechannel switches, UCS, storage).
In your case with a Windows Hyper-V environment, I would recommend to look into Powershell / Powerscripts. UCS has a library of around 1800 commandlets; its free of charge.
Everything you can do with GUI (UCSM), can be done with PS scripts.

UCS C240 M4 with Cisco UCS VIC1227 VIC MLOM - Dual Port 10Gb SFP+
Hi All,
Have a few UCS C-series questions:
If I have a UCS C240 M4 rack server with Cisco UCS VIC1227 VIC MLOM - Dual Port 10Gb SFP+, but do not have fabric interconnect(s), I cannot use the UCS VIC1227 for anything, can I? The VIC ports HAVE to be connected to the FI(s) in order to be integrated with the UCS Manager. There is no local UCS manager software running on the server itself, is there?
It is useless to have this card in the server without the FI(s), isn’t it?
The OS that is going to be installed on the server is not going to see those 10GB ports on the VIC, isn’t it?
And if there are no additional PCIe NICs installed in the server, I am stuck with the two 1GB onboard NICs, is that correct?
Any input is appreciated.do not have fabric interconnect(s), I cannot use the UCS VIC1227 for anything, can I?
The VIC 1227 can be used to integrate the server with UCSM, but that does NOT mean that is its unique function... the VIC 1227 is a CNA card that can be used whether your server is in standalone mode (no Fabric Interconnects) or integrated with UCSM.
If the server is not connected to a Fabric Interconnect (FI), it still has CIMC (Cisco Integrated Management Controller) which can be configured by attaching a monitor to the server and a keyboard, press F8 when you see the Cisco logo and then you can configure the IP, subnet, gateway, NIC mode and others... this may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHQBvwO7pUU
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/e/1-0/gs/guide/b_Getting_Started_Guide/b_Getting_Started_Guide_chapter_0101.html#task_3F8535D6A9574BCD806B25FEBF44615D
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/servers-unified-computing/ucs-c200-m1-high-density-rack-mount-server/111455-setup-cimc-c-series.html <<< Little old but still helps.
It is useless to have this card in the server without the FI(s), isn’t it?
It is NOT useless to have the card in the server without the FIs, having the servers integrated only allows you to take advantage of the flexibility of Service Profiles but the VIC card still has the same capabilities whether you have an FI or not.
The OS that is going to be installed on the server is not going to see those 10GB ports on the VIC, isn’t it?
See above
And if there are no additional PCIe NICs installed in the server, I am stuck with the two 1GB onboard NICs, is that correct?
Same answer as above
Let me know if you have further questions. IF I covered everything, please mark the question as "answered" for future users with the same doubts.

How can integrate UCS Manager with ACS
Somebody have guidelines to integrate UCS Manager 2.0 with ACS 5.3 using TACACs
I have tried creating a TACACs Providers and a TACACs Providers Group, the In the Native Authentication i have changed the real from local to tacacs usin the provider group i've created.
In the ACS i have added the device and in monitoring viewer i can view the succesful log of authentication but the UCS Manager windows close before the authentication pageHi Shelley,
I was reading the document, but I have some doubts. What we need is to do the integration with Cisco Secure ACS 4.X Solution Engine 1113 Appliance. We need to identify a client for a name and not for IP Address. Can I do this with SM and ACS??.

CIMC Access After Integrating C Series with UCS Manager
My question relates to the following language:
This guide contains information and procedures for installing Cisco UCS C200, C210 and C250 servers for integration with Cisco UCS Manager release 1.4 or 2.0.1.
Cisco UCS C-Series Rack-Mount Servers are managed by the built-in standalone software, Cisco Integrated Management Controller (CIMC) . When a C-Series Rack-Mount Serveris integrated with Cisco UCS Manager, the CIMC does not manage the server anymore. Instead it is managed with the Cisco UCS Manager software. You will manage the server using the Cisco UCS Manager GUI or Cisco UCS Manager CLI.
Does this mean that you literally are unable to web to the CIMC GUI? Or does it mean that although you can still access the CIMC, the management of the C Series is recommended to be performed via the UCS Manager?
Are they mutually exclusive?
Thanks,
AmirJust saw this:
These UCSM mode settings enable DHCP, Active-Active NIC redundancy, and Shared LOM NIC mode, which enables CIMC control through the 1-Gb LOM ports, rather than the management port. Any static IP addresses and the management port are disabled, so you lose connection with the CIMC.
So it appears that they are mutually exclusive.
