UCS C220 Series server

Hi All,
I have to perform a new installation of UC on UCS servers. This is the first time i am handling the c series servers and I would like to get some clarity on how the Raid is configured.
The servers came with
MegaRAID   9266-8i + Battery Backup for C240 and C220
and each server has four 500Gb hard drives. Can you advise on which is the best raid level that I can use. I would like to use raid 10 but I am not sure how this has to be configured?
Thank you.

Hello,
Really cant advise on which RAID level is best cause it depends on what you looking for, best write performance, more reliability, fault tolerance or if you dont mind setting a disk as hot spare (will have no info at all and just wait for a disk to fail so it can takes its place); in other words there is a variaty of options and all may or may not be good depending on your needs.
In this case, to configure RAID 10 with that controller, you will need to reboot the server and access the PCIe controller with "Ctrl+H" when prompted during the boot process.  You will be prompted with a screen that will ask you to select the controller you want to access, since there is only one just select it.
Next screen will be something like the below (but will ALL disks unconfigured), select "Configuration Wizard" and configure manually
In the next screen, choose
1-"New Configuration"
2-"Manual Configuration"
3-Select 2 disk and click on "Add To Array", do this steps for the remaining 2 disk so you can form 2 groups
4-Click on "Accept DG"
5-Click on "Next"
6-Next screen will show you both of the arrays you created in step 3, select the first and click "Add to SPAN" (repeat for the other array you created)
7-Click on "Next"
8-You will now see an screen like this one where you will be able to select RAID 10 (if it does not show up, the arrays were either not properly created or not added to SPAN like in step 6 above)
Note: The other options are:
-strip size: portion of a stripe that resides on a single drive in the drive  group. The stripe consists of the data segments that the RAID controller  writes across multiple drives, not including parity drives.
-Access Policy:
*RW—Allows read/write access. This is the default.
*Read Only—Allows read-only access.
*Blocked—Does not allow access.
Read Policy
*Normal—Disables the read-ahead capability. This is the default.
*Ahead—Enables read-ahead capability, which allows the controller to read sequentially ahead of requested data and to store the additional data in cache memory, anticipating that the data will be needed soon. This speeds up reads for sequential data but there is little improvement when accessing random data.
Write Policy
*WBack—(Writeback) the controller sends a data transfer completion signal to the host when the controller cache has received all of the data in a transaction. This setting is recommended in Standard mode.
*WThru—(Writethrough) the controller sends a data transfer completion signal to the host when the drive subsystem has received all of the data in a transaction. This is the default.
*Bad BBU—Choose this mode if you want the controller to use Writeback mode but the controller has no BBU or the BBU is bad. If you do not choose this option, the controller firmware automatically switches to Writethrough mode if it detects a bad or missing BBU.
With the new version 1.5, this can also be done with CIMC without having to reboot the server.
I hope this helps but let me know if there is any doubt.

  • UCS C series server whether accessible from Linux prompt

    Hi UCS Team,
I have UCS c series server.
I am able to check the Fan, power, cooling and equipment and hardware status using the CIMC.
In CIMC I configured the SNMP and check it using MG soft Mib browser tool.
The CIMC query the BIOS for getting the information.
Similarly is there any process to get the BIOS information from the Linux.
Correct me If I am wrong anywhere.
My requirement is to query the UCS C server BIOS information using Linux-SNMP without CIMC.(direct access of BIOS from Linux)
Can I install a Linux supported SNMP client and supported MIBS to query the BIOS level information of UCS using SNMP MG soft Mib browser?

    Hi Keny,
I tried to powercycle both servers (c260M2 and C460M2) but still no discovered server and also no logg.
    I checked
Rack Server Discovery Policy == immediate
Rack management Connecton Policy == Auto Achnowledged
    Chassis/Fex Doscovery Policy == 2 Link and Port-Channel (As I installed 2232PP I moved to Port Channel)
I am running UCSM Version 2.1(1e)

2232PP run on same as FI
I also have a connected 5108 with IOM 2104 running on 2.1(1e) Version.
CIMC Version of C260M2 and C460M2 will be checked tomorrow when my kolleague is in the datacenter.
Server Connection is not really the same like in http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c-series_integration/ucsm2.1/b_UCSM2-1_C-Integration_chapter_011.html
Because I still have no VIC Card but the connections are the same.

  • Cisco UCS C220-M3 Server doesn't boot after adding Intel I350 Quad Port NIC

    Hello,
We have purchased 2 Cisco UCS C220-M3 rack mounted servers (Single Processor) that have a dual port I350 LOM. We also purchased two Intel I350 Quad Port NICs to expand the available ports on each server from 2 to 6.
The problem we are facing is that the server will not complete the boot process unless we disable either the LOM or the Quad Port NIC. We have tried numerous settings in the BIOS area but we haven't managed to have them both working.
The I350 Quad Port NICs are from Intel and not from Cisco and we are running the latest FW/BIOS on the Servers as of March 10 2015.
We have followed the steps described in the installation guide to install them.
Could you provide some light in this situation please, what are our options?
P.S. Although the LOMs are I350, the MAC Address Vendor is Cisco, is it possible that Cisco servers accept only Cisco Branded Expansion Cards?
    Thank you,
    George

    Hi Shawn,
At least I'm not the only one having the same problem!
You are trying to use the cards with the LOMs enabled?
Which screen are you referring to in the first paragraph of your message?
Mine sits in BIOS POST for about 10 minutes and then resets itself....
We are also waiting for an answer from Cisco, so any findings/news will be posted here.
    Thanks,
    George

  • Cisco UCS C220 M3S Server OS random shutdowns

Hello good day, I am facing some issues with the Cisco UCS indicated in the subject, I have created a Raid 1 beetwen 2 HDD's of 1 TB each one, also upgraded the firmware of the UCS with the 2.0(3f) HUU tools, and upgraded everything. Then I installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Eval version (I have a proper license to install but wanted to test the OS first). Now some times the OS/Server just shutsdown, and whenever I go in to the Web GUI to check it out, it's actually powered down, I have checked the "Faults and Logs" --> System Event Logs, and I can see this happening:
*The timestamp is from below to the top on both logs*

(About this message with the HEX Values, it's always repeating it self with other values)

    Regards.

Ok, I feel kind of dumb now, I have checked the tech evaluation page on Microsoft, and if it's not connected to the internet it will not inherit the three months evaluation trial, which I thought would come activated already, and only allows you up to 10 days grace period with the rearm command .... :/
The process C:\Windows\system32\wlms\wlms.exe (WIN-UDPFG5O0K37) has initiated the shutdown of computer WIN-UDPFG5O0K37 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Other (Planned)
     Reason Code: 0x80000000
     Shutdown Type: shutdown
Comment: The license period for this installation of Windows has expired. The operating system is shutting down.
This is what made me check it out today, I will connect it to the internet and let it activate... Meanwhile the command for the 10 days grace is:
    Slmgr /rearm
    Shutdown –r
    Like always.

  • UCS C-Series Server discovery with UCSM integration failed

    Hi, i try to install C460M2 and a C260M2 via fex 2232PP
Because we are waiting for delivery of VIC Cards I have to install the Servers via 2 wire.
This means I connected each Server with the 2 LOM gigabit ports to the nexus 2232PP (one port ono each nexus), and I also connected the 10 ge LOM to each of the nexus 2232PP.
My problem is the nexus 2232 are discovered, but no one of my servers get discovered. All Ports have link up, I can not find any log message on discovery error.
I know the 10 GE Server Ports are not supported, but I think the servers should get discovered.
Does anybody have an idea, wherecan I find all logg information and what filter ist suggested ?

  • Managing the UCS C220 M3S with the UCS Manager

I have 2 new Cisco UCS C220 M3S running 2.0(3b) and 2.0(1b) connected to a UCS-FI6248UP 5.2(3)N2(2.23d) via a Intel X520-DA2.  I also have both management interfaces up via a 100 meg copper connections.  My issue is that I can't see these servers in the UCS Manager the UCS-B was a no brainer but the C's are not discovered, I've looked through both the CIMC and the UCS Manager and I don't see an option to change the management to the UCS Manager.  I'm sure that I'm missing something since this is my first experience with the UCS C or UCS as a whole.  Thanks

    Hi,
Please make sure that the Set up of the UCS C-Series Server Integration with UCSM is correct. Here is the guide when you will be Configuring Single-connect to the IO Module FEXs.

  • UCS B series IOM firmware upgarde.

    Dear Experts;
We have one BUG in our UCS B series server as below link.
    https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCue49366/?reffering_site=dumpcr
The work around is to do the IOM  firmware upgarde.
As teher are several Firmware are associated with the  UCS system how to knwo the dependency and how to know which firmware is compatible with the uCS server.
Please assist me to get teh proper IOM firmware .I opened one TAC and they are telling TAC doesn't support this we have to contact cisco AS team and we don't have cisco AS team contract.

    Dear Walter;
Really appreciated your expert technical advice.
I have one small question as below if you can answer it..
    As per the existing setup..
This UCS system is connected with the EMC storage Model:VMAX-1SE  Version:5876.
We have no idea if   UCS firmware version 2.1(3c) is compatible with the MC storage Model:VMAX-1SE  Version:5876..
I have opened the TAC and also went through the Compatibility matrix where it mentioned as attached and to conatct EMC vendor.
We opened case with EMC they are telling contact Cisco and Cisco TAC telling contact EMC.
IS there any way we can know this?
    Note as per the attachment:
    5. Direct Connect FC/FCoE topologies are supported with this array.
    6. Non-default adapter settings are typically required by storage vendors and found on their support list.
7.Multiple array and switch models supported with UCS by the storage vendor are on their support list.
12.iSCSI Boot is supported Both Appliance and Uplink ports are supported unless otherwise noted.
    26. Supported for NFS/CIFS access via appliance ports on the Fabric Interconnect

  • UCS C Series hardware monitoring

Does anybody know how we could monitor the UCS C Series hardware (power supply, Hard disk, Memory ect...) within SolarWinds. We usually monitor servers via SNMP. It looks like there is the CISCO-UNIFIED-COMPUTING-EQUIPMENT-MIB that is supported on UCS manager 1.4 and above. When I to poll the box for those MIB's I get the OID is not supported. The UCS C Series server is on 1.3(2j) for the firmware version. Do we need to upgrade to 1.4 to get the equipment monitoring to work or is there another way? I notice a lot of users are monitoring B Series in Solarwinds but I haven't really seen anything on C Series.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Hello,
Yes, CIMC 1.4 has additional SNMP functionality.

  • HDD Drivers for UCS C220 M3L

    Hi Experts,
    Good Day!
I have a new UCS C220 M3L server which I will be using for my CSM however, when I tried to install my OS (Windows Server 2008 R2 - 64 bit) I don't see the disks, it says that no drivers where found - please see attached file.
May I know where can I download that drivers also what is the recommended version of the drivers that needs to be downloaded?
Thank you very much for the great help.
    Cheers,
    niks

    Hi Walter,
    Thanks for the response.
I'm not able to check the BIOS but I can confirm that the RAID is detectable. It shows during the boot up process of the UCS it is currently in RAID 5.
Do you have an idea on what driver version should I download for my UCS?
Thank you and have a nice day!

  • Problem with the new server UCS C220 for set IP to CIMC

    Hi
We’ve a problem with the new server UCS C220.
We bought two servers UCS C220 M3 for CallManager 8.6 with High Availability.
When we turn on the server during the boot and when it tells us, oppress F8 to enter at the CIMC and set the IP. But it never enters at the CIMC.
Then, we configure our DHCP server and our switch, we connect the three gigabyte ports to our switch to give him an IP to the CIMC, so and then can enter via browser, but neither works.
Note. The dedicated management NIC does not link, the other two ports do make link.
What do you suggest to put an IP to CIMC and start installing our applications?
    regards

You may have noticed that there is no DVD rom on the c220. What you need to do is:
Login into the CIMC from your browser
    Luanch the KVM
Insert the VMware DVD in your machines drive
On the KVM pop up there should be a tab to mount the drive, after mounting it click on Macros and choose ctrl_alt+delete to restart.
After the VMware OS installs press F2 to enter IP.
Browse to the VMware ip to download the Vsphere client
Open the Vsphere client, enter the ip of the vmware and the username will be root and no password if you did not set one.
You can now upload OVA templates or manually create virtua machine from this enviroment.
    Hope this help

What firmware are you running on this server?
Did you buy this raid controller direclty from cisco or from a partner.
Based on the screenshot you provided the firmware on your controller looks very old,  I recommend that you use the HUU to upgrade the firmware of the adapter to the same level as  your server. Use link below to download the firmware package for your server.

  • Long beep sound in UCS C220 Server

    Hello All,
We have recently upgraded our CM server from MCS to UCS C220. All is working well since 3 weeks. However, since the past three days the UCS server is giving long beep sounds. In the CIMC console its showing as Severe Fault and in Storage Slot 1 and physical Drive 2, the status is "Foreign Configuration" and Health status is "Moderate Fault". However, when we check the status of the light on  the physical drive, its still green and not amber. So is it there a problem with the Harddrive?
    Pls find the screenshot attached.

Hey there. I don't think you'll get a reply on this forum because it looks like this is a fault on the UCS server itself, and not on the Unified Communication application that runs on the UCS server. Please re-post this discussion to the board which discusses UCS servers. You'll get a reply there.

  • UCS C220 server power button turns "Amber"

    Hi All,
We have a UCS C220 server on which we are running CUCM 9.1 and CUC 9.1 and all of a sudden the server's power button turns amber and everything goes down. We would have to physically turn on the power button and access the VMware and start all the services.
    Please advise.

Hi, I have the same issue, I just install a new clean CUCM 9.1 and CUC 9.1 in UCS C220 with pre-installed esxi 5.1, I leave the clients site the last Friday and today say to me that the servers is down, just turn on the server and everything comes back, in the vmware logs the only error that show is "2014-05-18T15:31:00.802Z [3DAE2B90 error 'SoapAdapter.HTTPService'] HTTP Transaction failed on stream TCP(error:Transport endpoint is not connected) with error N7Vmacore15SystemExceptionE(Connection reset by peer)" but I saw that error in the log before I installed this site the last May 5, anyone have a clue of what I have to look. Of if this error could do a crash or reset in the system.
    Thanks in advance.

  • UCS C220 M4 rack server extremely noisy

    Hi,
    I am preparing a UCS C220 M4 with windows 2012 for a client.
The server is extremely noisy, I mean much more than any other rack server  I have ever seen.
All the fan are working at highest speed rate as if the server had to urgently cool down.
The question is: Is this normal ? Is the server broken ? Is there an option to lower the "fan-policy".
    And how is this done.
    Best regards,
    Javier Conejo

The fan policy can be lowered if you go to the Server> Power Policies> Fan Policy.
Here is the explanation for each option:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/c/sw/gui/config/guide/1.5/b_Cisco_UCS_C-series_GUI_Configuration_Guide.151_chapter_011.html#concept_8CB787DF70304E98BE25D120466418B9
Balanced This is the default policy. This setting can cool almost any server configuration, but may not be suitable for servers with PCIe cards, since these cards overheat easily.
Performance This setting can be used for server configurations where maximum fan speed is required for high performance. With this setting, the fan speeds will run at the same speed or higher speed than that of the Balanced fan policy.
Low Power This setting is ideal for minimal configuration servers that do not contain any PCIe cards.
High Power This setting can be used for server configurations that require fan speeds ranging from 60 to 85%. This policy is ideal for servers that contain PCIe cards that easily overheat and have high temperatures. The minimum fan speed set with this policy varies for each server platform, but is approximately in the range of 60 to 85%.
Maximum Power This setting can be used for server configurations that require extremely high fan speeds ranging between 70% to 100%. This policy is ideal for servers that contain PCIe cards that easily overheat and have extremely high temperatures. The minimum fan speed set with this policy varies for each server platform, but is approximately in the range of 70 to 100%.
There are still some PCIe cards that cannot be monitored and cause the policy to be "ignored" so the server can be kept cool (I'm not saying that is your issue, I am just mentioning it)
Open  an SSH session and enter the commands:
    "connect debug-shell"
    "sensors"
Paste the output here for the FAN sensors (they will have the word "FAN" on it)
Be sure you air flow is not blocked at all by doors or cables.
