UCS Central: How Global Service Profile match DG

Hi
I'm pretty new to UCS Central and I've got a rudimentary UCS Central question.
I wonder how Global Service Profiles match/relate to domain groups.
To what I've read so far we use different domain groups to apply different operational policies to differenent UCS systems.
How does this relate/interact with global service profiles?
Is there a way to make sure that some service profiles could be associated just to UCS servers belonging to one DG?
Or is everything which is related to global service profiles like MAC-adresses, policies and the service profiles themselves always at the root and therefore can always be applied to all UCS servers managed within one UCS Central installation?
best regards
Dani

Hi Dani,
Global Service Profiles fall under the Organization structure.     And the Organization structure/hierarchy has no relationship/dependency to Domain Groups.
So limitting visibility of Global Service Profiles/Templates to certain Domain Groups --- no, you'd have to limit them within an Organizational context.
Hope this helps,

  • Managing service profiles and servers through UCS Central

    Hello,
I am designing a workflow for automating server installations through PXE boot with global service profiles.
it creates a (global) SP and assigns a server for it, but then changing boot policy for the SP does not work, I assume because the SP is created from a template. Also Director seems to miss the required tasks to boot the SP/server through Central, and server assign return ucs server identity as empty so the UCS tasks do not work either.
Any suggestions how this can be done besides using local SPs in manager?

  • How to move a standalone Cisco C series to UCS managed service profile without losing data?

    Hi,
We currently have a standalone cisco C series server with Windows 2012 installed on the local disks.  We need to move this server to Cisco UCS managed with a service profile but cannot lose the existing data and OS boot method.
Does anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks

    Hi Adrian,
To be able to accomplish this set the local disk policy to "Any Configuration"  this way UCSM  won't overwrite the current raid configuration on the server.
    See link below

  • Rebuilding /re-registering UCS Central (MAC/WWPN issues?)

    Hello,
My Standalone UCS Central VM has failed and we have no backups!! I need to rebuild a new UCS Central server. The old UCSC VM had MAC and WWPN pools configured. Has anyone ever had to unregister a UCS Central server and register a new one into the same environment.
How will the existing environment deal with the registration of a new UCSC?
Could I build a new server and recreate the pools in the same format? (Would it create conflicts as the existing services have been allocated MAC and WWPN already from this 'new' pool)
    Cheers, KP

    Hi Walter,
Unfortunately, I need to install UCSC from scratch and register it with my UCSMs.
I intend on reusing the hostname and IP
Luckily, we have no global service profiles (only local profiles and templates) but we do allocate WWPN, WWNN, UUID, MAC via UCS Central. I believe these will be preserved when I unregister the old server.
I wanted to also recreate the above pools in the same format/same range but wanted to make sure the new UCSC didn't provide existing IDs consumed by local profiles only available IDs.

  • UCS Central - Making Boot Policy - SAN boot target Provisioning

    Gents
Some objects is always related to the domains and need to be provisioned in global like
VLANs: but we can did it by Provisioning VLANs with UCS Central Using VLAN ID Aliasing.
VSANs: the same idea in VLAN ID Aliasing.
Boot Policy adding SAN boot target : what about this issue how can I provision it so I can configure it globally in abstract way then it will take targets depend on domain during associating the global service profile.

    @Gmonroy
    Thanks for support
But if I need to make a global Service profile temp so I can deploy SF from it in any domain, and if  I referenced this service profile temp to one boot policy so i need to unbind each service profile created from this temp to associate a different boot policy in each domain ? " I will lose the benefit of updating service profile template "
Or I have to create different template per domain ? " I will lose the key benefit of  centralizing Templates in UCS central"
Or there is any workaround to deply this senario.

  • UCS Central Inventory Status is stuck at "in-progress"

One of the UCS Domains connected to UCS Central is not updating it's inventory in UCS Central. In UCS Central it shows the Inventory Status is "in-progress" and the last refresh was several days ago.
I've have restarted the UCS Central VM and attempted the "refresh-inventory" command in the CLI, but the "Inventory Status" remains as "in-progress."
Another UCS Domain connected to UCS Central is updating properly:
We have three blades that UCS Central is not detecting which is preventing a Service Profile from associating.

The FSM Status in UCSM says "Success."  As I stated above it was registered fine and working fine for several weeks.
Now however the inventory in UCS Cental and in UCSM are out of sync.  Since it isn't seeing some new blades that were installed we can't add them to a sever pool or associate Global Service Profiles.
UCS Central shows the Last Refresh as several days ago (the screen grab in the orginal post.)  I believe it should be updating inventory every 10 minutes.  I have tried to manually refresh the UCS domain in UCS Central CLI with the "refresh-inventory" command with no luck.  I have also Suspended and Acknoledeged the UCS domain with no change.

  • UCS Central

Is it possible to convert local service profile to global in UCS central 1.1(2). I tried to restore ucs central system state backup on new vm.
It restored successful but Domain went to suspend mode because GUID on UCS central changed. It is asking to unregister  and register again.
I re-registered and then all global policies and profiles became local.

    Hi Wdey,
    Thx for u Answer!!
Yes i know this, my questions are:
    1) what happent if i shut down the one UCS Central Appliance  (no cluster) if i have made my hole config on there?
Is this like vcenter? There I can shutdown vCenter and the ESX Hosts works fine.Is this the Same on UCS Central?
    2) I can se the option "Persistend Binding"  in my Global Service Profile under "vHBA" but i can't change it to "enable" because the SP is from my Global Template. And i would't change the association.
The Problem is, that i can't change this vhba Option "Persistend Binding"  in the global Template because this Option doesn't exist in the Global Template! (only in the Service Profile)
I know that things are different from the UCS Management but this is a realy important option.
And i can change it but obly if i say "unbind from Template"
For my opinion it make no sense that i have this options only in Global Service Profile and not in Global Service Template

  • I can't take ressources in global pool of UCS Central

    Hello
I try to use UCS Central to manage my differents pool (mac, WWN, UUID).
From Central I can't see local pool of UCSM !!! From UCSM, i can see global port i defined, but when i choose a ressource of global pool, i have en error : Resolving identifiers from UCS Central.
The central sees UCSM, UCSM is registred to Central, and UCSM sees the global pool but doesn't use.
I try to resign UCSM, to reinstall UCS Central but it's the same thing.
Are there any commands to check more communication between central an UCSM ?
    Thank
    Stéphane

    Thank Chetan,
From UCSM, the ping is ok with UCS central.
I want to check from UCSM the possibility of use global pools (ucs central).
From UCSM GUI, when I create a Service Profile, i can see global pools (mac, wwn, uuid), but when I try to used it, I have an error :
"UUID address assignment failed, possibly illegal UUID or no available UUID in the pool"
If i use a local pool, it's OK.
How can I debug this problem?
From UCSM CLI or central CLI, can I have commands that can give me more details about the global pools, and to see that global pools work properly.

  • How to use Properties Metadata global service using KM API's

    Hi,
I have a requirement where I need to get the list of property Namespaces configured in the KM Portal and also all property Names associated with each Namespace.
I was able to see the list of Namespaces in KM portal at "ContentManagement --> Global Services --> Property Metadata --> Namespaces"
Is there any way to access the Property Metadata service and get the list of Namespaces?
I have seen few posts using the IPropertyConfigurationService as below:
    IPropertyConfigurationService configService;
    try {
    configService =
    (IPropertyConfigurationService) ResourceFactory
    .getInstance()
    .getServiceFactory()
    .getService("PropertyConfigurationService");
    } catch (PropertyConfigurationServiceException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
I am not sure if IPropertyConfigurationService has API's to give the list of Namespaces as I was not able to figure out the jar file in which API's related to IPropertyConfigurationService exists.
Will the IPropertyConfigurationService be useful to fetch all the configured Namespaces? If so, which jar file should I place in my build and class path?
Also, Can I get the property names associated with each namespace?
Any help or hint is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Suresh.

    Hi Praveen,
Thanks for the information on km.shared.service.propertyconfig_api.jar file. I have located the file in the mentioned location and was using it sucessfully.
I was able to use IPropertyConfigurationService  and fetch the MetaData properties in the Portal application.
But, when I place the same code on WebDynpro application it doesn't work.
I have placed the km.shared.service.propertyconfig_api.jar in lib folder of the WebDynpro project, but on runtime I get ClassNotFound exceptions of various classes.
I was wondering if there is any configuration that need to be mentioned for accessing KM Portal applications in WebDynpro.
I have found one post related to this which was talking about using IPropertyConfigurationService in WebDynpro, but not directly, using EJB
    Link:[https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/thread?threadID=338383]
Can you throw some hints on how to go about this issue.
    Thanks,
    Suresh.

  • How to change power state in a Service Profile Template

I'd like to change the setting "Power State" in a Service Profile Template. While I can change nearly every other aspect of the template, I can't find this in the UCS Manager GUI. Is this an immutable decision while creating the template? Can I change it via the CLI?

    Hi Joernclausen,
What is the firmware version of your UCS?
From the CLI try the following and let me know if it works.
Go into the FI CLI and perform the steps below, ensure to enter your own template_name and select appropriate type of template followed by setting the power up or down
    sj-ucs-r13-mon-A# scope org
    sj-ucs-r13-mon-A /org # enter service-profile template_name initial-template
    sj-ucs-r13-mon-A /org/service-profile # power up
    sj-ucs-r13-mon-A /org/service-profile* # commit-buffer
    sj-ucs-r13-mon-A /org/service-profile # power down
    sj-ucs-r13-mon-A /org/service-profile* # commit-buffer
You may also be able to change the power state from the individual service profiles
Go to the service profile and use "Change Initial Power State" button for modifying the desired-power value.

  • Change Boot Policy and Firmware Version for Service Profile using UCS PowerTool

I'm looking for the PowerTool syntax to modify both of these values on individual service profiles. The documentation behind most of these cmdlests is almosts non-existent.
I believe the boot policy may be able to be changed like this:
    Set-UcsServiceProfile -BootPolicyName
As for the host firmware version under the policies tab of the SP... I have no idea what that cmdlet would be.
    See attached images for examples.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hello,
One version of the User guide for UCS powertool can be found here:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/msft_tools/powertools/ucs_powertool_book/ucs_pwrtool_bkl1.html
That guide makes notes of the following commands in regards to HFPs:
    Host Firmware Package
Create a Host Firmware package and set IgnoreCompCheck to No.
    $host_firm_pack = Add-UcsFirmwareComputeHostPack -Name host_firm_pack -IgnoreCompCheck no
Add a Host Firmware pack item.
$host_firm_pack | Add-UcsFirmwarePackItem -Type adaptor -HwModel N20-AC0002 -HwVendor "Cisco Systems Inc"
    -Version '1.4(1i)'
Set version of Host Firmware pack item.
    $host_firm_pack | Get-UcsFirmwarePackItem -HwModel N20-AC0002 | Set-UcsFirmwarePackItem -Version '2.0(1t)'
    Remove Host Firmware package.
    $host_firm_pack | Remove-UcsFirmwareComputeHostPack
I would also like to recommend the Cisco Developed integrations section which may be more specific to the powertool:

  • UCS 1.4 and Custom Service Profile Numbers

Is there a way to customze the numbers that get appended a Service profile either at creation or after the fact?

Doesn't look like there is a way to change the name once it is created.  You can give it a user Label under properties which will describe what the Service Profile is being used for in greater detail.
I assume you are creating Service Profiles from a template?
It looks like you can say how many you want and it will give it your name and number starting with 1, and counting up.
If you are looking to create unique names with your own numbering scheme it looks like you will have to clone an existing service profile, or create unique service profiles.

  • UCS replicating tamplate / service profile

    Hello Experts
I have about 50 datacenters deployed with Cisco UCS
All datacenter have the same exec hardware and using the same UUID pools same MACs
the only diffrence between them is the IP scheme
I want to create a new template or service profile for only one of the B200 Blades and inject it to each one of my datacenters
I have tried to do it with command line script but not much luck
I am familiar with the backup and restore options but I am unable to export only one of the service profile only all of them
Is what I am asking possible ?
    Thanks ahead and best wishes
    Mitch

    Mitch,
Couple of comments - I would use extreme caution when using duplicate MACs.   If you ever have to interconnect your DCs you're going to be in a mess of trouble.  Since you can craft your own MACs people will normally use one octect to designate the "site".
    Ex. 00:25:B5:AA:BB:BB
    00:25:B5 = Cisco's OUI
    AA = Site ID
    BB:BB = Unique Identifier
You should be able to use a Power shell script to inject the new profile to each of your UCSM domains.
Jeremy Waldrop has done a great job utlizing this.  Check out his blog.  He's put together an incredible PowerShell script you should be able to re-use with some slight modifications.
    http://jeremywaldrop.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/cisco-ucs-powershell-configuration-script/
You'll also find some great reference commands in the Quick Start guide:

  • How to shutdown UCS central vm

How do you shutdown UCS central virtual appliance?  I have it running on a standalone ESXi machine and I need to shutdown the ESXi machine for some maintenance.  Since the vm doesn't have VMware tools installed you can't shut it down from vCenter and I'm looking at the cli configuration guide and I don't see any specific command for shutting it down from the cli.  Also, I don't see an option from the gui to shut it down.     I ended up just powering off the vm since I'm just playing around with it right now, but for future reference I was wondering what's the proper way to shut the vm down.

As a workaround until this feature is available, i did see a 'reboot' option in local management CLI.
Prior to rebooting, edit the VM properties under Options > Boot Options > Check Force BIOS Setup.  This will prevent the OS from reloading.  Then you can shutdown.
Once you power the VM back up, the BIOS check will be gone and the VM will load.
