UCS Firmware-2.#(##)-should I or wait ... or ...

Hi, Cisco:
I have heard a lot of horror stories after UPGRADING to Cisco UCS 2.#(##).
My customer is running 1.4(2B) and I have to perform an upgrade, so I am pondering SHOULD I upgrade to 1.4(3#) or 2.#(##). It is a production environment. SAN Booting, UCS M81KR, ESX 4.1i, etc.
i want to hear some candid feedbacks from Cisco or others.
Thanks.
SiM

SiM, the IO module firmware version must always match the connected Fabric Interconnect version. The software forces this version consistency. It works just like the Nexus 5000/7000 and Nexus 2000 (FEX) relationship, a FEX will always match the version of firmware that is on the parent switch.
If you were to not leave the "set startup version" box checked on the IOM activation and reset it the IOM would reboot and then its firmware would get reset back to the version running on the FI. Then when the FI activation is performed it would also update all the conected IOM to the same version and reboot them. So there is no way around having to do it the documented way.
The way that you are propossing would actually cause more downtime because the IOM would reboot twice.
Have you read through this guide? -
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/upgrading/from1.4/to2.0/b_UpgradingCiscoUCSFrom1.4To2.0.html
In this section it talks about the IOM activation and how it must match the FI version -
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/upgrading/from1.4/to2.0/UpgradingCiscoUCSFrom1.4To2.0_chapter4.html#task_F0C09BC50D2048A1B0C495F7F6E6093A
It states:
"Important:
    When you configure Set Startup Version Only for an I/O module, the I/O module is rebooted when the fabric interconnect in its data path is rebooted. If you do not configure Set Startup Version Only for an I/O module, the I/O module reboots and disrupts traffic. In addition, if Cisco UCS Manager detects a protocol and firmware version mismatch between the fabric interconnect and the I/O module, Cisco UCS Manager automatically updates the I/O module with the firmware version that matches the firmware in the fabric interconnect and then activates the firmware and reboots the I/O module again."
On your northbound L2/L3 switch "spanning-tree portfast trunk" for Catalyst or "spanning-tree port type edge trunk" for Nexus should be configured on the interfaces and port-channel interfaces.
As long as you folllow the upgrade guide and have all Service Profiles configured with vNICs/vHBAs in both Fabrics and have a user-acknowledged maintenance policy configured you shouln't have any noticable downtime.

  • Should I have waited for the Clovertowns?

    I have ordered a mid-range MP with the X1900. .. knowing that the quad chips will be here at year end. Typically, I would expect to see Apple turn the high end into a Dual-Quad and keep the lower 2 at single quads...for a while..then make the mid a dual quad also.
    But this is new territory and I'm wondering if you guys think the quads will be available beginning of year..low/mid and high.
    Should I have waited...:) or do we actually think Apple is going to release a firmware update down the road that will allow us to upgrade these first towers??
    12 PB   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    As far as I understand it the Clovertown processors, due to Intel rush to be moving forward, are not a true quad-core processor rather two dual-core processors on the same die. While having an 8-core system does sound pretty cool the real performance benefits of 4 more cores is at the moment debateable.
    Should you have waited? Probably not. By waiting you'll be pushing back your purchase a minimum of 6 months, which is assuming a quad-core processor make it into the next Mac Pro, which means you'll be with a Mac Pro for that time. Put a price on that.
    I remember the large number of people who were waiting on PowerBook G5s… the ones that never appeared. There's always something better around the corner and it really comes down to how many corners you're prepared to go around. I know for myself I wasn't prepared to wait till next year to buy a Mac Pro even though it's made me buy a first revision.

  • Should I have waited for the thunderbolt imac?

    This year, a few weeks before the 2011 imac came out I bought a new imac 2010. I loved using my new imac compared to old macintoshes. (imac g3 mouse night mare). I then heard that a few weeks after the purchase of my new imac that a new imac came out-with thunderbolt.
      As a video editor for my show I was wondering if thunderbolt is important. Do I absolutely need to have thunderbolt? Will every device require thunderbolt?
      As you can't modify or add internal hardware to an imac, I'm wondering if should I will regret my decision to buy a new imac just before a new version came out. But then again, I feel like everytime I buy something from my favourite IT company Apple is great when you first use it, but feels like an expensive paperweight when a new apple product comes out. (think apple ipods). So, should I have waited?

    At least for now there are no Thunderbolt peripherals available. And the first ones that will come will most likely cost more then any USB/FireWire variant they have now.
    So Thunderbolt will become (hopefully) more important in about 1/2 years from now. Unless you want to be one of the firsts and prepared to the premium price.
    For instance Lacie announced a Thunderbolt diskdrive. But to make sure that the disk can also write/read at the massive speeds that Thunderbolt is promising, they realized that this disk must be SSD. Of course an SSD disk is not bad at all, but it still very expensive.

  • Back-up doesn't progress. I have a large catalog...should I keep waiting or is something wrong?

    I am trying to do an incremental back-up. The Organizer has been calculating total media size for over 14 hours and is still at the initial 3%.  I have a large catalog.Should I keep waiting or is something wrong?

    I have mine set to not push or automatically check my email, it only checks my email when I actually use the mail app. I also keep 3G turned off unless I'm using an app that needs to get online like safari, mail or Pandora radio. Just this week I wanted to see how long it would last with my normal usage to go from full to zero and it was in stand by most of the time but I played a few games, used safari and mail a few times (I use 3G at work but at home it's turned off b/c I use my wifi connection)used it as an ipod a couple times in the car, had a few phone calls and several text messages and I think I played around with the GPS and map utility on the drive home from work one day and in the end it lasted almost 48 hours. I was plugged into my laptop for about 5-10 minutes to sync so it was charging then but overall I was quite happy with the battery.
    3G and automatic mail checking certainly drains the battery but I expected that when I got it. I wish there was a button on the home screen to turn 3G on and off instead of having to go into the control panel but it's not too inconvenient.
    Remember that Apple recommends that you fully cycle the battery once a month, fully charge it then let it drain to zero then fully charge it again.

  • Just installing a few updates from the Mac App Store for mountain lion on my 2010 MacBook Pro, during this it made a noise and then the screen and keyboard went off, like it is off. What happened, is it off...or should I just wait it out?

    Just installing a few updates from the Mac App Store for mountain lion on my 2010 MacBook Pro, during this it made a noise and then the screen and keyboard went off, like it is off. What happened, is it off...or should I just wait it out?

    What kind of noise?
    The only things I can think of that make noise are fans and disks. Fans usually will not cause the computer to shutdown as you describe. My guess is your disk drive died. I hope you made a backup prior to start the ungrade.

  • Qlogic what firmware version should be installed

    I'm having trouble with a couple of new qlogic 5600 switches (the switch wants to assign my clients as target and not initiators). which firmware version should be installed on the switches? i'm having quite a lot of trouble with this upgrade and any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks

    thanks for your reply Donald. I did manage to get the FC switch and hba cards working properly. I was aware of the device scan and streamgard settings on the switch, but the feedback i was getting from the switch was worrisome (some targets were listed as initiators on the switch and vicaversa). What solved the problem for me was to load the latest qlogic firmware 7.0.1...(i think), and it started giving the correct devices on each port. The new firmware also allowed me to log on to the switch through a web browser on my mac and not the antiquated "San Surfer" java app that came with the switches. I also had to set my hba to point-to-point and not automatic. I also set my arrays to point to point as well. I have 2 xserve RAIDs and a new promise array all set for "point-to-point". The old emulex switch we were using before was much nicer to work with than the qLogic switches that I just installed, and I found myself longing for the simplicity of the setup on the emulex.
    Everything is working great now...I'm getting very fast throughput (250mb/sec).
    The only remaining grief is that everytime I quit the admin app and relaunch it, it won't reconnect with my mdc's and i have to delete the xsan admin preference in my admin/library/preferences/ folder to reattach the admin app and administer my san. any ideas?

  • Xperia Z1 vs. Z1s or should I just wait for Z2?

    Hi everyone,
    So I am thinking of getting an Xperia phone, I am a huge Android fan, never used a Sony phone before and currently having a Galaxy S4. I am attracted to Xperia's configuration and wanting to giving it a try. However, I am not sure which one should I pick. Here are couples of questions I am having in mind. Maybe you all can help me decide. Thanks a bunch!!!!
    1. Between Z1 and Z1s, which one I am better off with? I know there aren't much differences between them but if I was to go with Z1, will I get LTE 4G network with Tmobile since it is an unlocked phone? I really like the varieties of color choices and I love the purple version.
    2. Between Z1 and Z2, since Z2 is coming out soon, should I just wait for it? However, I am hearing rumors that the Z2 won't be launching in the US for a while. Any insider scoops?
    Thanks for all of your advices

    If you live in the US,I think it will be a little more until Z2 hits the market there.But if you were to choose between Z1/Z1s,there should not be any big difference.The specs are the same,but the Z1s has more internal storage.

  • Left my macbook air to dry over night then turned it on, should i keep waiting for it to dry?

    I accidentally left the cap of my water bottle open then threw it on my bed, the next minute a small puddle had surrounded my macbook air, so i took it immediately and shut it down. I waited for it to dry over night so then this morning i decided to try to turn it on but it wouldnt turn on at all! just should i keep waiting for it to dry then turn it on or is there no chance at all!
    Also i have not yet told my parents because they would kill me as they got me this macbook as a well-done-on-your-grades reward!

    I understand and sympathize with you.
    But from a technical point of view, liquid damage is progressive.
    If I had  other helpful tips, I would have shared those with you.
    Best.

  • UCS firmware version question

    Hello guys!
    I've seen from Cisco download for UCS B series firmware versions, there are 2 latest versions which 2.2.(1d) and 2.1.(3c), what are the different between these 2 versions? My current firmware is 2.1.(1b), should I update to 2.1(3c) or 2.2.(1d)? Thanks.

    Hello,
    The difference is that they belong to different chains (one is 2.1 and the other 2.2) where we made some improvements in the firmware.  UCS, unlike other Cisco devices, do not follow an specific order in the firmware versions released; so you may see, at anytime, how a 2.1x version may be newer than a 2.2x version; precisely cause that 2.1x will be the newest one for the 2.1 chain while the 2.2x will be the newest one for the 2.2 chain but release on a different day.
    The other difference is the bugs we fixed on each release, which might not be included in the other one.
    The UCS behavior can also change from version to version, and here is an example:          https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11673921/default-zoning-users-heads-ucsm-21
    If you want to see how one version differs from the other, what you can do is to check the release notes for each one:

  • Best Practices for Upgrade UCS firmware from 2.0 to 2.2?

    Hi
    I have Cisco UCS system ( 2 FI, 4 Chassis with 32 Server ) running 2.0 firmware. Now I want upgrade to 2.2. When I check document "Upgrading Cisco UCS from Release 2.0 to Release 2.2", I see have 2 solution:
    - 1. Upgrading from Release 2.0 with Auto Install -> Step simple but all server reboot at same time.
    - 2. Manually Upgrading from Release 2.0. -> Step more complex but can upgrade server one by one.
    My question:
    - Can I "Upgrade the infrastructure firmware with Auto Intall but upgrade Server with Manual"?
    - What is best for my case?
    Thanks

    Hi Phamcongtuan,
    In UCS you can create host firmware policy that can be used to upgrade the firmware of your blades.  Once you upgrade the infrastructure firmware, you can apply the host firmware policy to the service profiles of your blades.  If you are using service profiles templates you will need to unbind the service profiles and apply the policy to the individual servers.

  • My friend needs to upgrade her Macbook Pro OS X but can't get into her internet. I would like to download the update but would need to use my password. Is this possible or should I just wait for her password?

    My friend needs to upgrade to Yosemite but her network is faulty. I told her I would upgrade for her on my network. I don't have her Apple password at this time so I thought I would use mine. Is it possible to use my password and ID for this download?

    She gave me her ID so everything is going as it should. That's what I thought but in a moment of wait I thought I would ask.
    Many thanks,

  • Java compiler should check if wait() and notify()

    wait(), notify(), and notifyAll() methods should be called within a critical section, but the Java compiler does not check for this. It is usually during running that an Exception is thrown when the methods was not called within a critical section.
    To me, it seems that the compiler should check and enforce that wait(), notify() and notifyAll() be called within a critical section.

    I think I mis-understood you.
    Yes, you are right to say that because callNotify() was called within a critical section at some time, and may be called from other non-critical sections, so the compiler does not have means to keep trace of the calling stack.
    How about this:
    Because critical sections are always marked by the synchronized keyword, the compiler can actually keep count of the synchronized word and its corresponding braces, then when a wait(), or notify(), or notifyAll() call is made at certain point, the compiler just check for the nested synchronized cunt number, if it is non-zero, it will be syntaxically correct.
    Take the example of your code, I see that the proper point for
    public class Test {
      Object lock = new Object();
      public void lockObject() {
        synchronized (lock) {
          callNotify();                     // here the synchronized brace count is 1, so it is OK!
      private void callNotify() {
        lock.notify();               // here the synchronized brace count is 0,
                                            // but because it is a stand alone function, the compiler
                                            // can deliver warning information.
      public void dumbMethod() {
        callNotify();              // should deliver warning
      public static void main(String[] args) {
        Test t = new Test();
        t.lockObject();
        t.callNotify();                   // but here, the synchronized brace count is 0, so failure!
    }

  • UCS Firmware Question

    Hi:
    Just want a definitive answer to the following question:
    1. If my FInterconnect and IOM are having a "lower' firmware version than my UCS Blades (CIMC, BIOS & Adapter) assuning they are all at 1.4(3#) level, will the FI "upgrade" the firmwares on UCS Blade automatically?
    2. If my FInterconnect and IOM are having a "higher' firmware version than my UCS Blades (CIMC, BIOS & Adapter) assuning they are all at 1.4(3#) level, will the FI "downgrade" the firmwares on UCS Blade automatically?
    I remember someone from Cisco told me before that the downgrade or upgrade will happen automatically or I am wrong.
    Thanks.
