UCS Firmware Question

Hi:
Just want a definitive answer to the following question:
1. If my FInterconnect and IOM are having a "lower' firmware version than my UCS Blades (CIMC, BIOS & Adapter) assuning they are all at 1.4(3#) level, will the FI "upgrade" the firmwares on UCS Blade automatically?
2. If my FInterconnect and IOM are having a "higher' firmware version than my UCS Blades (CIMC, BIOS & Adapter) assuning they are all at 1.4(3#) level, will the FI "downgrade" the firmwares on UCS Blade automatically?
I remember someone from Cisco told me before that the downgrade or upgrade will happen automatically or I am wrong.
Thanks.

  • UCS firmware version question

    Hello guys!
I've seen from Cisco download for UCS B series firmware versions, there are 2 latest versions which 2.2.(1d) and 2.1.(3c), what are the different between these 2 versions? My current firmware is 2.1.(1b), should I update to 2.1(3c) or 2.2.(1d)? Thanks.

    Hello,
The difference is that they belong to different chains (one is 2.1 and the other 2.2) where we made some improvements in the firmware.  UCS, unlike other Cisco devices, do not follow an specific order in the firmware versions released; so you may see, at anytime, how a 2.1x version may be newer than a 2.2x version; precisely cause that 2.1x will be the newest one for the 2.1 chain while the 2.2x will be the newest one for the 2.2 chain but release on a different day.
The other difference is the bugs we fixed on each release, which might not be included in the other one.
The UCS behavior can also change from version to version, and here is an example:          https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11673921/default-zoning-users-heads-ucsm-21
If you want to see how one version differs from the other, what you can do is to check the release notes for each one:

  • Best Practices for Upgrade UCS firmware from 2.0 to 2.2?

    Hi
I have Cisco UCS system ( 2 FI, 4 Chassis with 32 Server ) running 2.0 firmware. Now I want upgrade to 2.2. When I check document "Upgrading Cisco UCS from Release 2.0 to Release 2.2", I see have 2 solution:
    - 1. Upgrading from Release 2.0 with Auto Install -> Step simple but all server reboot at same time.
    - 2. Manually Upgrading from Release 2.0. -> Step more complex but can upgrade server one by one.
    My question:
    - Can I "Upgrade the infrastructure firmware with Auto Intall but upgrade Server with Manual"?
    - What is best for my case?
    Thanks

    Hi Phamcongtuan,
In UCS you can create host firmware policy that can be used to upgrade the firmware of your blades.  Once you upgrade the infrastructure firmware, you can apply the host firmware policy to the service profiles of your blades.  If you are using service profiles templates you will need to unbind the service profiles and apply the policy to the individual servers.

  • UCS Basic Questions

    Hi
I am new to Cisco UCS, I have a little idea about Nexus Series Switches.
I would like to know what exactly are the differentiating factors between -
    UCS 6100 Fabric Interconnect
    Nexus 5000 Series
    MDS 9000 Series switches
All these can support FCoE, 1G / 10G Ports, I know 6100 Fabric Interconnect has built in UCS Manager
where I can place these in a real worl solution.
    Second -
Can we make multiple Blades in a chassis, or Multiple Blades in Multiple Chassis conected to a Single / Multiple interconnected 6100 Fabric Interconnect / Nexus / MDS switch, to combine as a Single / One Server.
    Appreciate your kind response.
    Tahnks & Regards

  • Mountain Lion / EFI Firmware Question

    Hello All,
I have a straightforward question. I have a Mid-2009 15" 2.53ghz MacBook Pro, that currently has Lion installed on it. Last year, I wanted to upgrade the hard drive, encountered the EFI Firmware 1.7 issue, downgraded it to 1.6, and everything works fine now.
My Question: I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but dont want my hard drive issue to reemerge: Does EFI 1.7 automatically install as part of the Mountain Lion install? Can I upgrade OS X without disabling my machine's abililty to have a hard drive?
    Thank you!
    Jeremy.

I really appreciate any responses or opinions. I have found the Apple Support communities to be amazingly helpful so far.
    Thank you again!

  • Stupid firmware question

    Hi,
I have a question. I'm pretty sure I know the answer but I just want to put my mind at rest, or prepare in the event that I have to do something.
I'm awaiting an install disk of OS 9.2 before I eventually install the OS 10.3 disks, which are sitting next to me (quite frustrating). I know that I need to install firmware before installing 10.3. Do I install 9.2 and then get online and add firmware. I just want to make sure I don't add the firmware before I add 9.2.
Also, does someone happen to have the link to the firmware. I think it's on this Apple site, but I seem to have lost the link.
    Thanks!

This document explains which one(s) and has links to the firmware download(s):
58174- Power PC-based iMac: When to install available updates
Download the firmware anytime. DO print out the instruction sheet. It's tricky.
You run the firmware updater under OS 9, and it pre-installs the firmware re-writer onto your Hard Drive. Then you re-boot and the firmware re-writer does its magic -- if and when you press the right buttons at the right times. If you miss, you have to start over at step 1.

  • Zen Extra 30GB Firmware Question.

I'm still with the original firmware and i like it. The only thing is that it doesn't have removable storage. I was wondering if there is any firmware that can make this happen because i would like to be able to connect to other computer without having to install everything. Also if it is possible to get removable storage will i need to install the drivers and programs on the computer i'm looking to transfer files from? And more question if there is a firmware with this option and i use it will i be able to go back to the original one if i don't like the audio quality?
    Thank you for reading.
PS I don't want the playsforsure firmware either.

There is no removable storage option for the Zen Xtra. If you want to use the player on another PC, you will have to install the drivers and an application to use it.
The new MTP/PlaysForSure firmware makes connecting to other PCs (provided they have WindowsXP and WMP0) easier, but this firmware is not downgradable so be sure you want to have it before you install it, as you cannot reverse this procedure.

  • In depth UCS FEX questions

With regard to the 2100 FEX module on the UCS....what exactly does it do besides simply act as a mux?
Does it have any buffers (ingress and egress)?
Does it have any switching intelligence at all?
How does it handle the reception of DCB packets (PFC, ETS, etc) from the 6100 or the VIC on the other side? Does it just pass it on?
What does it do with regard to FIP and FIP snooping?
    Need answers ASAP!
    Thank you!

    Ex,
The 2100 operate identically to the FEX 2000 series for N5K.  I know you've asked quite a bit of detail on that device already, same applies to the 2104XP IOM for UCS.
Did you have any other specific questions on the UCS IOM (FEX)?

  • IDRAC 6 Express - Update Firmware Question

    Hello,
does anyone know if updating the iDRAC 6 Express firmware via the web gui causes any issues? I know it needs to reset itself. But I am wondering if it requires a full reboot or does the NIC reboot? Thanks.

I posted a more general question about this is this post (http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1087984-do-i-really-need-workgroup-agent-license-for-shoretel?.... ) , but unfortunately, it kind of went cold. So, I am reposting with a more condensed question. We have a group of employees that will be hot desking on their phones and will also be using Communicator. I want them to always be logged into a workgroup which I understand canbe done fromDirector. My question is,do the users that are logged in via Director stay logged in when they hot desk from phone to phone? Assuming that is the case, do I need workgroup access licenses if they are never going to be logged out of the workgroup?

  • UCS Firmware-2.#(##)-should I or wait ... or ...

    Hi, Cisco:
I have heard a lot of horror stories after UPGRADING to Cisco UCS 2.#(##).
My customer is running 1.4(2B) and I have to perform an upgrade, so I am pondering SHOULD I upgrade to 1.4(3#) or 2.#(##). It is a production environment. SAN Booting, UCS M81KR, ESX 4.1i, etc.
i want to hear some candid feedbacks from Cisco or others.
    Thanks.
    SiM

SiM, the IO module firmware version must always match the connected Fabric Interconnect version. The software forces this version consistency. It works just like the Nexus 5000/7000 and Nexus 2000 (FEX) relationship, a FEX will always match the version of firmware that is on the parent switch.
If you were to not leave the "set startup version" box checked on the IOM activation and reset it the IOM would reboot and then its firmware would get reset back to the version running on the FI. Then when the FI activation is performed it would also update all the conected IOM to the same version and reboot them. So there is no way around having to do it the documented way.
The way that you are propossing would actually cause more downtime because the IOM would reboot twice.
Have you read through this guide? -
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/upgrading/from1.4/to2.0/b_UpgradingCiscoUCSFrom1.4To2.0.html
In this section it talks about the IOM activation and how it must match the FI version -
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/upgrading/from1.4/to2.0/UpgradingCiscoUCSFrom1.4To2.0_chapter4.html#task_F0C09BC50D2048A1B0C495F7F6E6093A
    It states:
    "Important:
When you configure Set Startup Version Only for an I/O module, the I/O module is rebooted when the fabric interconnect in its data path is rebooted. If you do not configure Set Startup Version Only for an I/O module, the I/O module reboots and disrupts traffic. In addition, if Cisco UCS Manager detects a protocol and firmware version mismatch between the fabric interconnect and the I/O module, Cisco UCS Manager automatically updates the I/O module with the firmware version that matches the firmware in the fabric interconnect and then activates the firmware and reboots the I/O module again."
On your northbound L2/L3 switch "spanning-tree portfast trunk" for Catalyst or "spanning-tree port type edge trunk" for Nexus should be configured on the interfaces and port-channel interfaces.
As long as you folllow the upgrade guide and have all Service Profiles configured with vNICs/vHBAs in both Fabrics and have a user-acknowledged maintenance policy configured you shouln't have any noticable downtime.

  • 5800 firmware question

    Hi all,
a friend of mine has an 5800 and as soon as she bought it she tried to upgrade the firmware to version 40 (ovi suite said update was availiable). However, halfway through the update failed and the phone crashed and does not switch on anymore. The thing is it was not the pc's fault cause she succesfully uprgaded the firmware for both a n96 and n97 before. Do you know if  she will have to pay for upraging and fixing her phone at nokia stores?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If she has not done anything to it that could void the warranty, this should be fixed on warranty.
Have she tried to do a hard reset to see if it makes the phone boot? This will delete a clean your C memory, but it's worth a try if her phone wont boot at all. Pres and hold call-end-camerabutton while turning it on. Keep holding them untill handshakescreen is finnished.

  • WRT54G-Need to reconnect every day / firmware question

So each day my router stops connecting to the internet. I go through the same troubleshooting wizard, and each time all I do is unplug and plug back in the router as per it's directions. While this works, I don't want to do it every day. I'm trying to download the firmware for it, but I guess I'm not used to downloading firmware for things because the download is trying to run on a flash player on my computer >. I thought they were supposed to be executables? T.I.A. all.

Well, I updated the firmware, but still it has reset again today. The usual message I get when I open Easylink Advisor is "Different Network Detected". It can't connect to the internet, and I need to setup my network again, detecting my router, entering Network Name and unplugging the power so it will find it again. This computer doesn't connect to it wirelessly, it's a direct connection, and none of the cords and cables are ever touched, all of them are always plugged in. Nothing is being done wrong, it connects fine until one point during the day then it just stops and I need to go through the setup again. Anybody recognize the problem? Thanks.
