UCS secure boot - should I enable?

C220 M3 server shipped with 1.5(4d). Looking to upgrade to ucs-c220-huu-2.0.1a. This is the recommeded release on cisco.com. Anyone have experience or recommendations on this? Should I use v2.0.1a and/or enable secure boot? Thanks!

If you're talking about Secure Boot then I'm assuming you're talking about UEFI.
If so, and you're planning on running VMware, you may want to look at 2.0(3d)1 that came out a couple of days ago. This has a fairly critical fix that fixes an issue where the onboard LOM's won't detect and load drivers properly in VMware when the system is booted with UEFI (this will prevent you installing VMware under UEFI - but it will work under legacy BIOS). 2.0(1)a still has this bug.
I'm running 2.0(3d)1 and it seems to be good so far.

Z87's: Secure Boot isn't configured correctly" watermark on the desktop

If after installing windows 8.1 w/ win 8 features enabled and you still see the "Secure Boot not configured correctly" watermark, you must generate default keys.
To do this, You must set the secure boot option to custom and generate the default keys then set it back to standard and save.
Now Secure Boot should be enabled.
On Z87 the bios says you fist have to generate the keys, but on my Z77 this was not the case.
Keep in mind this is assuming a GPT formatted OS, GOP compatible VGA drivers and win 8 mode enabled already.

Can someone help me configure secure boot on z87 mpower + gtx650 ti boost? Whenewer im trying to turn this on i got this messwage about csm turned on. Another error that occurs is about graphic's card gop.

Windows 8.1 Ent eval enabled Secure Boot I think

I want to get my laptop back to its original format.
Currently dual booting Windows7/8.1
During the installation of Windows 8.1 Enterprise evaluation it paused to say it was going to enable secure boot. I did'nt think much of it I thought I could change it back from the bios. Did it flash my firmware? I checked the system status
with msinfo32.exe; was legacy mode and with powershell; secure boot not supported. I don't have any options to disable secure boot in the bios nor from within Windows -"I know how to disable it in windows 8.1". I can't boot a foreign
operating system, but I can boot a Microsoft OS which sounds like secure boot to me. I want to get it back to running Windows 7 dual booting with Linux. I use both at work and need both. I made the mistake by loading the Eval on my primary
laptop. I read I need to revert back to Windows 7 completely, formating and re-installing the OS. Will this clear my secure boot simulation issue? I have not changed the partitions or removed any O/S's. What's the best way
to proceed?

I want to explain that, Secure Boot is indepent with system, you can disable it in UEFI interface.
To disable Secure Boot, you can follow the steps below:
1.Before disabling Secure Boot, consider whether it is necessary. From time to time, your manufacturer may update the list of trusted hardware, drivers, and operating systems for your PC. To check for updates, go to Windows Update, or check your manufacturer's
website.
2.Open the PC BIOS menu. You can often access this menu by pressing a key during the bootup sequence, such as F1, F2, F12, or Esc.
Or, from Windows, hold the Shift key while selecting Restart. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options: UEFI Firmware Settings.
3.Find the Secure Boot setting, and if possible, set it to Disabled. This option is usually in either the Security tab, the Boot tab, or the Authentication tab.
4.Save changes and exit. The PC reboots.

How to Enable Secure Boot on UEFI Systems?

Das macht man 2-3 mal und dann ist nix mehr mit Bios. Dann kommt Passwort ist falsch und das war's dann. Hab ich schon auf verschiedenen Lappis gehabt. Sprich TOSHIBA... und Aspire E1-571g. Beim Toshi den Baustein ausgelötet neuen gekauft, beschrieben und wieder eingelötet. Kostet schlappe 150,-€. Yoga 11 Secure Boot State Off - How to enable it?

Hi all, first of all I would like to provide you with some background information. I purchased (in Germany) 2 identical Yoga 11 machines (MAS29GE). Both had display ghosting issues and one of them had a lose trackpad. So, I sent them in for repair.
After getting back the 2nd one as well, I wanted to see whether the BIOS versions are identical on them, since the repair report said that there was a BIOS update performed on both machines. The BIOS version seems to be the very same I had before sending them in: v1.2.58, 05.12.2012
But then I noticed something strange: on one of the Yogas the Secure Boot State is Off. I checked it also with PowerShell and it shows False, meaning disabled.
So, I called Lenovo support, but they weren't able to help me. The answer was that I cannot enter the BIOS to change this.
However, I suspect that either the technicians entered the BIOS and forgot to enable secure boot later on, or something else messed it up. What I also noticed after receiving the Yogas back from repair is that the "Advanced Startup" in
Windows shows more options on one machne than the other. Please, see the below images for details:

I did 2x System restores already (1x quick, 1x secure), but the Secure Boot State did not change (this was to be expected since this settings is in the UEFI BIOS and not in Windows - nevertheless, was worth a try).
As I read in other comments, Microsoft did not intend users to enter the BIOS on Windows RT machines.
Please, note that I did not "Jailbreak" the system, for 1) I have no idea how to do it and 2) I don't intend to hack it. One reason why I bought Windows RT because I wanted to keep legacy x86 viruses out of the system.
So, what do you suggest? I really do not wish to send the machine back for another 2 weeks only for 1 single change in the BIOS. Please, help! Thanks!

As far as I know, you are the only individual I have ever heard of who has received a Windows RT-based computer with the Secure Boot option disabled.
Because of this, I am not certain what steps you would take to (re)enable this functionality on the device.
What I would suggest you do is perhaps post a message on the Windows 8, RT Development and Hacking forum over at XDA-Developers, and perhaps one of the members over there can make some suggestions.

Secure Boot Status: DISABLED. Cannot enable Secure Boot via BIOS.

BIOS Security Page displays:
Secure Boot ENABLED
Secure Boot Status DISABLED
I have attempted to ENABLE Secure Boot multiple times but Secure Boot Status remains DISABLED
This problem occured after BIOS Upgrade to v3.07
I have Lenovo G510 Laptop
Windows 8.1
BIOS Version 79CN48WW (v3.07)
I have tried the recommended solution of "Reset to Setup Mode" and "Restore Factory Keys".
This did not solve the problem, Secure Boot Status still indicates DISABLED.
Please suggest an alternative solution to this problem.

How to re-enable secure boot ?

Hi All,
On my X1 Carbon, I had to move from Win 8.1 pro to 8.1 Ent. I did a fresh install from scratch to only install what I need.
During my setup, I had to disable Secure boot, to boot on a USB Key, install 8.1 Enterprise. Now that everything is working, I would like to re-enable the secure boot option.
If I don't it directly in the BIOS, the laptop doesn't book any more.
ANy idea how to do it ? Do I have to import key from my 8.1 Ent to the Bios or something like this ?

If you want to install Windows 8.1 in UEFI mode, and thus be able to Secure Boot it, you must set your machine to Secure Boot off, while installing, and in the Startup section of the BIOS, set UEFI/Legacy Boot to UEFI only.
NB, for a USB device to be able to install a UEFI version, it must be formatted to Fat32. I have no clue why this is required, but it is. I have installed Vista / 7 / 8 in EFI/UEFI mode from a basic Fat32 drive for many years if required.
I have seen this go wrong on a couple of machines, mainly because the HD is initialized as a MBR drive, and the generic MS Windows 8.1 ISO will not give you an option to initialize it as a GPT or a MBR drive, which the Recovery Media from Lenovo for Windows 8 actually does.
You can then either use a Windows bootable media to enter Repair/Recovery mode, and formatting your HD through the DISKPART utility or what is simpler, boot up a liveCD image of gParted and clear your drive completely by initializing the drive as GPT, exit the utility and then installing Windows 8.1, which will, due to the UEFI only selection in the Startup procedure, boot up your Windows 8.1 installation in UEFI mode and once finished, you will be able to turn Secure Boot back on.

Windows 7 Deployment via PXE to an UEFI + secure boot enabled Lenovo system.

I was wondering if above was possible?. I have not yet put much energy this uefi and secure boot thingy - so just told our supporters to change bios settings back to Legacy with secure boot disabled on the pre Windows 8 delivered Lenovo systems.

Can't activate secure boot after upgrading from Win 7 to Win 8 on a Spectre XT

Hi everybody,
my first post here, so please forgive me if the topic has already been discussed
I did search before posting anyway, but I couldn't found anything addressing this specific point.
My (small, I must admit) problem is as follows:
I recently purchased a Spectre XT 13-2005tu (i7 processor, 4Gb RAM, 256Gb SSD) with Windows 7 pre-installed.
After installing my favourite applications and using it for a few weeks without any trouble, I thought to take the opportunity of the $14.99 upgrade to Win 8, so I downloaded Windows 8 Pro and installed it (as an upgrade, rather than a fresh installation, because I didn't want to loose the customizations I already made).
I also installed all the updates available on HP website (sp59158 for updated BIOS, sp58404 for UEFI support, ecc.)
The whole upgrade worked nicely, and the PC is now up and running with Win 8.
Now, I'm trying to use at best all the possibilities Win 8 has to offer, and among them, the UEFI secure boot.
I found the "legacy support" option in the BIOS settings, which as I understand must be disabled to activate the UEFI secure boot, but if I do that the PC tells that there's no operating system on the disk and doesn't boot anymore.
Which was a bit scary by the way, but eventually I could re-enable the legacy support in the BIOS and have the PC working again, but of course with no secure boot.
I suppose there must be some other re-configuration that should be done before changing the BIOS parameter, but I couldn't find any instruction for that anywhere on the web.
On the other hand, it would be indeed weird if the secure boot could not be configured AFTER the OS upgrade, and a new fresh installation would be necessary.
I'd rather part with the secure boot than re-install everything, but that would be a shame... :-(
I hope someone can explain what should be done, many thanks in advance!

Thanks for your feedback, but I don't think your issue is the same as the one I previously explained.
The UEFI/secure boot setting is a basic configuration affecting the way the PC boots, regardless of whether it is connected to a network or not.
By the way, in the meantime I've seen in a shop exactly the same PC model which I'm using, now sold with Win 8 pre-installed, and it was working with the UEFI enabled (= BIOS "legacy support" disabled).
Therefore, the configuration I'm interested in has to be feasible, one way or another...!

USB does not boot, Secure Boot Disable

I need to install Windows 7 x64 Dual mode with Windows 8 in UEFI mode but not boot the usb device and I have secure boot disabled. my question is, windows boot manager (BCD) should have entries for usb boot?. If so, how would the command to add these entries?
I can only start Windows 8. my ultrabook is acer v5-132

If you are using a Flash Drive to try to install Windows 7 in UEFI mode, it will not boot that way unless you have completed the extra steps to make it capable.
Did you create the Boot partition on the drive and add the additional file?
Being formatted as Fat32, as Christoffer mentions is also necessary.
If Secure Boot is interfering with the Windows 7 boot, you will probably get to the 4 colors coming together and then get an error message or put back into the bios setup, depending on your system. If that happens, enable the CSM.

X220 BIOS/Firmware - does it support "Secure Boot" under Windows 8?

I am getting ready to install W8x64 Pro. I have a X220 with the latest BIOS (1.36 if I recall correctly) using Windows 7x64 currently. I have run the Upgrade Assistant and it says: "Secure Boot isn't compatible with your PC." "Your firmware doesn't support Secure Boot so you won't be able to use it in Windows 8."
Assuming when I install W8x64 bit I have "Boot to UEFI First" and "UEFI BIOS Only" set in the BIOS - and the SSD formatted as a GPT SSD - should Secure Boot work?
The 1.36 BIOS is not listed as Windows 8 compatible. I see there is a BIOS for the X230 that is W8 compatible but I am not going to install it.
At any rate - for any of you X220 users - you can click on "System Information" in W8 or type in "msinfo32" in the run script and it will say whether "Secure Boot" is Unsupported or On.
Here is a Lenovo link for installing W7 using UEFI but it does not mention whether you would be able to be in "Secure Mode" at the end.

Latest firmware is supposed to support Windows 8. But I don't know what support is supposed to mean... I'd say that if you've installed under UEFI and still doesn't enable, it doesn't.
Thou now that I think of... After I installed using UEFI, I had to go back to the BIOS and change some setting. Reset-some-key or something. I can't restart the computer now but whenever I restart it I'll let you know which setting it was. (it can be several days)

Secure Boot State On in Error?

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a VM on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core). In checking MSINFO32 I see "Secure Boot State" is "On" for Essentials, but given my current configuration I believe this should be "Off?"
I setup a new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core) using an Areca ARC-1224-8i RAID controller. It was unclear to me whether or not the Areca RAID controller would support UEFI or not, but since Secure Boot was desirable I decided to try a UEFI installation.
I created two volumes on the RAID controller. C drive of 80 Gb and D drive of the remainder (about 9 Tb). I checked the file C:\Windows\Panther\setupact.log and saw the message which told me this was an EFI installation/boot.
After Hyper-V was installed I then setup Essentials as a VM on the D drive.
When I ran MSINFO32 in both Hyper-V and Essentials and I saw the Secure Boot State was On which was expected (and desired) for both OS levels.
Several days later I started having problems. The system seemed to have crashed and during multiple attempts to reboot the Hyper-V server couldn't seem to detect the RAID controller. If I tried a new Hyper-V installation and loaded the RAID driver
the RAID controller was seen, but when Hyper-V itself tried to boot it seemed as though the RAID driver was not being loaded and thus the RAID controller could not be found (and along with it my C boot drive was missing)?
Since I had some suspicion that the RAID controller might not support UEFI I decided to re-install Hyper-V, but this time using the Legacy BIOS. After the installation was completed I again verified the setupact.log and saw BIOS rather than EFI (as
expected).
I then re-attached my Essentials VM (which was left untouched on the D drive) and got everything running again.
But now when I check MSINFO32 within Hyper-V it showed Secure Boot State Off (expected given that UEFI was not used). But when checking MSINFO32 within Essentials it showed Secure Boot State On.
I thought one purpose of Secure Boot was to create a chain of trust. Given that Hyper-V can no longer verify this chain (since UEFI is not used) I would have expected any VM running above Hyper-V to be in the same state, i.e., Secure Boot State Off?
When the underlying Hyper-V layer changed I would have expected that to change Essentials view of the world? So it looks to me as though this is not being handled correctly?

P.S. In case this makes any difference I am using a motherboard with a TPM and both the C and D drives were encrypted with BitLocker. The C drive used a TPM key and the D drive had a password and was setup to autounlock.
After I re-installed Hyper-V on the C drive I then manually entered the BitLocker password in order to access the Essentials VM on the D drive.

Sorry for the delay. Since I'm working other problems with this server it took a while before I could double check the configuration.
In case it matters on this server I'm using an Asus Z87-WS motherboard.
I'm setup for BIOS rather than UEFI boot. There is a "Secure Boot" menu.
Secure Boot State - Disabled
Platform Key (PK) state - Unloaded
OS Type - Windows UEFI Mode
Then on the "Advanced Trusted Computing" menu I have -

TPM State - Enabled

When I initially installed the software (on my new RAID6 controller) I was in the process of enabling BitLocker when I ran into problems with the RAID6 controller. I don't believe the state of the TPM should have any influence on the Secure Boot state

When I checked C:\Windows\Panther\Setupact.log there is a line in that file that confirms a BIOS boot. When I logged onto Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and ran MSINFO32 (as noted above) there is a line that also shows BIOS and Secure Boot state as Off (which
is expected). But within the VM running Essentials 2012 R2 when I run MSINFO32 I see a Secure Boot state of On (which is unexpected). I don't recall off hand if MSINFO32 within Essentials showed BIOS or UEFI for the boot? I think it was BIOS,
but would have to double check. (I won't be able to do that until I get issues with my RAID controller fixed. Or until I give up and try some other method to setup the hard drives and re-install Essentials.)

Satellite C50 - Secure Boot not configured correctly Build 9600

Hi,
Recently purchased a refurbished Toshiba Satellite C50 running windows 8.1 operating system. Was very pleased with it but found the message 'SecureBoot not configured correctly Build 9600' in a watermark in the bottom right corner of my desktop.
Decided to search the internet for a resolution and after going on 3 troubleshooting sites, found out about the BIOS Setup required, however it warned that this was for advanced users who know their stuff about the technicalities of computers. Whilst I am computer literate, I'm not someone who likes to mess with the advanced options. Then, I stumbled across a reliable computer blog which had a detailed post on SecureBoot.

I thought this would resolve my issue, and I will admit it did help, telling me to use windows powershell as a precaution before using the BIOS setup. I was glad I did as it came back telling me that I have a non-production SecureBoot policy present on my laptop in which case I would have to ask for technical support for a system specific solution which would typically be a firmware update.
I did try to phone, but the line was very busy and felt it might be easier to post this issue on a forum.
If anyone has an answer please help as I really would like to enable SecureBoot if possible, as I believe computers should be set up with the best security options possible and it makes me feel comfortable knowing that it is set up securely.

The registry fix to remove the watermark is as follows.
1. Start the Registry Editor with Admin rights (C:\Windows\regedit)
2. Navigate to the following path
-> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System.
3. There, the two values " ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin "and" EnableLUA "set to" 0 ".
You can also try to enable the secure boot option in BIOS (in case its not already enabled)
To get into the BIOS, press F2 while powering ON the unit.

Windows 8 Installation Disc Won't Load UEFI-only (T420s). Also does T420S support Secure Boot?

Question 1:
I am unable to load the Windows 8 Installation DVD in UEFI (only) mode on my T420s. As a result, I can only run the installer in Legacy mode (or both UEFI/Legacy which effectively means the same thing). This in turn means Windows 8 is installed in Legacy BIOS mode. Any idea how to install it in UEFI mode?
I am using a DVD burned using the Windows utility from the Windows 8 64-bit ISO and have followed the instructions in HT073269, however I am unable to get to step 1 of the Windows 8 install after updating the BIOS, resetting to defaults, and switching to UEFI-only. On boot, after switching to UEFI-only, I am presented with a bootloader and prompted to select which drive to boot (DVDRAM or SSD). Selecting either makes the screen go blank for a moment and then returns back to the same screen with no result.
Since then I have searched these forums extensively and Googled Technet, Notebook Review, and other sites to no avail. I've tried several several ideas, including using diskpart > clean to get the SSD in raw status (per HT051844). That did not make a difference. I also tried converting a Legacy-BIOS install of Windows 8 to UEFI using CharlyAR's instructions on TechNet (linked from another thread here). That seemed to get me to a Windows Boot Loader but still errored out and Windows Repair was unable to fix it.
Any suggestions?
Also, question 2: Does anyone know if the T420S support secure boot? If not, any idea if it's slated for a future firmware update?

Secure Boot is a certificate-based approach to preventing rootkits, not the same thing as UEFI. Although Secure Boot requires UEFI, having UEFI does not mean having the additional Secure Boot feature. If Secure Boot is available, typically there will be an option to enable it in the firmware configuration. Since the latest firmware for the T420S (ver. 1.35) does not have such an option, I suspect ThorsHammer is correct that Secure Boot is not (yet) supported on the T420S. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Lenovo will tell us that a firmware update is on its way though.
My understanding is that it will never support secure boot. The secure boot support starts at Ivy Bridge and the T430s.

Upgrading Windows 7 (Legacy BIOS/MBR Disk) to Windows 8 (UEFI/GPT/Secure Boot)

I've recently purchased a W530 with Windows 7 pre-installed. Ultimately, I'd like to replace this with Window 8 + Secure Boot. I believe I can get Windows 8 via the Microsoft Upgrade offer for a reasonable price, since this was a recent purchase.
What's the best way to reach my goal?
The Windows 7 install uses Legacy BIOS to boot with an MBR disk.
I had a quick look at Acronis, and I can see that it's possible that the "OS will be automatically converted to support UEFI booting" (http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#14021.html) when using it's tool.
If I don't use this approach, what can I do? Can I:
1. Use Rescue and Recovery in Windows 7 (Legacy BIOS/MBR disk)
2. Wipe the drive and reformat it with GPT?
3. Install Windows 7 with UEFI enabled using the Rescue and Recovery made in step 1?
4. At this point, I would now have UEFI and GPT.
5. Perform an Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and enable Secure Boot?
Any thoughts as to whether this would work?

The Acronis approach ends up in failure. Didn't give it a second look at the reason, since the tool it's not necessary. I also tried several other "automatic" tools without success.
The recovery approach will fail because it's tied up to BIOS boot.
But I've performed the conversion from BIOS to UEFI two times successfully. After some digging, is not SO hard. It's just... "undocumented". Very, very undocumented, hehe.
