UEFI Installation on sdc, Windows 8 partitons on sda gone?
Hi all!
I installed arch on my machine today, now it looks like my windows 8 partitions are gone, maybe someone can help me out.
My setting:
sda Windows 8 uefi installation
sdb ntfs
sdc ntfs and arch uefi installation
So what i did:
I freed up 100GB in sdc for the arch partitions:
[root@chief-pc chief]# sudo gdisk -l /dev/sdc
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.7
Partition table scan:
MBR: protective
BSD: not present
APM: not present
GPT: present
Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.
Disk /dev/sdc: 1953525168 sectors, 931.5 GiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): C82D4B3F-BE8C-4B1F-B3D6-73ED7B839865
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 1953525134
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 2014 sectors (1007.0 KiB)
Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
1 2048 1743808511 831.5 GiB 0700 Basic data partition
2 1743808512 1744873471 520.0 MiB EF00 efi
3 1744873472 1753262079 4.0 GiB 8200 swap
4 1753262080 1953525134 95.5 GiB 8300 root
As you can see I made a new efi partition on sdc, because I did not want to touch sda at all.
Then I installed grub:
mount -t vfat /dev/sdc2 /boot/efi
mkdir /boot/efi/EFI
modprobe dm-mod
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Everything went fine, I rebooted my system and it automatically booted into grub instead of win8 (win bootloader should have been standard in my asus uefi bios), so I rebooted again and tried to switch back to win bootloader in asus uefi bios, but the win entry was gone.
So back to arch, my output for sda looks like this:
[root@chief-pc chief]# sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.7
Partition table scan:
MBR: protective
BSD: not present
APM: not present
GPT: present
Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.
Disk /dev/sda: 234441648 sectors, 111.8 GiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): FFB20C3D-64F8-46F9-9504-C591105405FC
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 234441614
Partitions will be aligned on 2048-sector boundaries
Total free space is 233827181 sectors (111.5 GiB)
Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name
1 2048 616447 300.0 MiB 2700 Basic data partition
So where are all the win8 partitions? efi, system-reserved and ntfs
I never touched sda during the installation.
Please help me out here
best regards chief

First, please verify that this is the correct disk. As Trilby pointed out, disk device names (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc.) can change. There may be a clue in the disk size: 111.8GiB. If both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb were identical, that might not be enough of a clue; but if your disks all had unique sizes, the disk size should tell you which one is which.
Second, the type code 2700 refers to a Windows Recovery Environment (RE) partition. This suggests that this partition is an emergency partition, and the size of 300MiB seems consistent with that. OTOH, the partition name of "Basic data partition" suggests something else. The fact that the one partition fills far less than the entire disk is not a good sign. You could try using "blkid" on the partition in Linux to see what its filesystem type is, and perhaps mount it to examine its contents.
Finally, try using gdisk's recovery features. You can start with the "-v" option to perform a check on the GPT's integrity. It's conceivable that this will report a problem that you'll then be able to correct in one way or another. You could also play with the options on the gdisk recovery & transformation menu (type "r" at the main menu to get here). In particular, it's conceivable that the "c" option on that menu will help; it loads the backup partition table and uses it in preference to the main one. If you use that option and it restores your partitions, save your changes with "w".
WonderWoofy wrote:The manual nature of the Arch Linux installation means that you (should) know exactly what you are implementing and what it is doing. So the only way that Arch Linux can wipe out another system is if the administrator (you) wipes them out.
I agree. Some inadvertent action that you haven't reported must be responsible for these problems. It's conceivable that the action was in another distribution's installer or even in Windows.
WonderWoofy wrote:The only thing you can try is to see if you can use some kind of partition recovery software. There are some out there that can (somewhat reliably) detect where the start and end points of the old partitions were, and regenerate the partition table for you. The other type of recovery software is those that scan the device and try to recover individual lost files. Some of them do both. You should probably start reading up on them.
In Linux, the TestDisk utility can scan for missing partitions, while PhotoRec can scan for lost files. I gather there are better Windows tools for scanning for lost files on NTFS volumes, but I don't happen to have any pointers. TestDisk tends to do a decent job, but it's a bit confusing to the uninitiated, and it can become hopelessly confused if the disk has been repartitioned a lot in the past.
chieffun wrote:So I thought that maybe arch does not like 2 efi partitions in one system and corrupted it somehow.
No, that can't be it. As cfr says, Windows doesn't like multiple ESPs; but that's mostly an issue for the Windows installer. (It tends to get confused and aborts halfway through the installation.) I'm not even sure if Windows misbehaves in this way when the ESPs are on different disks; it might handle that situation OK, for all I know. Windows certainly doesn't go postal on its own partitions if it sees two ESPs. That said, it's conceivable that a Windows bug did cause this problem, if you booted Windows at some point during the process.
chieffun wrote:I also tried to rescue with parted rescue command and gpart, looks like something completely wiped (or corrupted) the partitions away. As if they have never been there in the first place...
In my experience, the partition rescue features of GParted and parted are unreliable at best. TestDisk does a much better job.

Oracle database 11g release 2 installation problem on windows 7 (64-bit)
First of all my windows is not genuine, but on my friend's desktop oracle download and installation worked fine, he chose "create and configure database" options, and it works very well on his desktop, though his windows is also illegitimate. In my case, when I select "Create and configure database" option and pressed 'next",
(Go to my blog to see it with snapshots: Computer Science: Oracle database 11g release 2 installation problem on windows 7 (64-bit))
it asks to select class, I select "Desktop class" and pressed "next". The moment I pressed "next", the whole setup thing disappeared like it was never started. I searched for all possible reasons for why its not getting installed on my laptop, I used registry cleaner s/w, deleted 25 GB of data to create free space if it were the problem, increased the virtual memory to increase the space for RAM, I did almost everything to get this setup working, but I found no success with the "Create and Configure database" option
and
then
I chose a "database software only" option and chose to store in a folder w/o spaces. This way, I got database s/w only and then later I found "Database configuration Assistant (DBCA)" from windows START button and clicked to create and configure database manually. The steps are pretty much interactive and doesn't involve much brainstorming.
The values I filled for
1) Global Database Name : orcl
2) System Identifier : orcl
3) I chose common password for both SYS and SYSTEM
4) while on Enterprise Manager Configuration step, It asked me to create and configure listener in oracle home, so for that too, I typed "netca" in windows START menu and clicked it. There I added a listener.
5) I chose a Storage area which was the Oracle-home itself i.e. where our installation files goes , in my case it is : C:\oracle_base\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\oradata
6) Then after few more nitty-gritty clicks, we are set to go !
Finally to write SQL code and to create your first TABLE , type "sqlplus" in windows "START" menu and click it when it appears. A command-prompt like window appears , which will ask you for username and password, so here they are :
Username : sys/ as sysdba
Password : (its the one you created in step 3 stated above )
After this you are ready to write your first SQL command. Is this your solution to your original post at Oracle database 11g release 2 installation on windows 7 (64-bit) ?
Pl be aware that you should not create any custom objects in SYS or SYSTEM schema - you should create any such objects in a separate custom schema.

Lightroom 3.2 Installation Problem on Windows 7 64-bit
Lightroom 3.2 Installation Problem on Windows 7 64-bit
I can't install Lightroom 3.2 (German) on my computer (Windows 7 Professional 64-bit).
While copying the extracted program files the following error message appears:
An error occurred during the installation of assembly component {6435B7C0-E0C8-3EA2-91AE-7640034EAFCE}. HRESULT: 0x80070002.
I found out that other users had the same problem, and couldn't find a solution.
Perhaps it is a Microsoft .NET Framework related problem. But after installing .NET Framework 4 nothing changed.
Thanks for ideas to solve the problem. Thanks for your advice, Mr. McLion.
I downloaded the 3.4.1 version and started the installation as administrator. Unfortunately the same error message occured again.
Then I tried to install the 32-bit version (although I prefer a 64-bit program on a 64-bit operating system). A similar error message appeared at the same point of installation progress, but with another combination of numbers and letters in brackets. -

SIMPLE OVERVIEW
SAP NetWeaver 7.02 ABAP Developer Edition System Requirements:
JRE 1.4.2.x or 1.5.0.x for Installation
Operating System:
Windows 7 Professional or Windows Server 2008R2 (english)
Hostname must not exceed 13 characters
NTFS-File systems
Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher or Firefox 1.0 or higher (newest recommended)
At least 2 GB RAM (recommended 4-8 GB)
Intel Pentium III/1.1 GHz or higher (or compatible)
50 GB hard disk space temporary during installation - 36 GB permanent
High-resolution monitor (1024x768 or higher, 256 colors)
Make sure that no other SAP system is installed on your computer
The SAP system requires serveral ports for communication services. Therefore the file %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\services must not include an entry for the ports 3200, 3600 and 8000. A possible entry can be excluded by using the hash symbol (#).
If no DHCP server is available on your network (which dynamically determines the IP address) or your computer is not connected to any network, you need to install the virtual interface adapter MS Loopback Adapter. The procedure to install a loopback adapter is documented within the download package.

Photosmart C4795 installation error on Windows 7 64 bits
Dear experts,
I have been facing an annoying issue while installing HP Photosmart C4700 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver I recently donwloaded from HP website.
During the installation process, the window suddenly closes when "applying updates". No error message is shown or anything that could tell us what went wrong, it just disappears from my screen.
I've found the following post with the exact issue as mine but different product. I tried that solution but it did not work at all for me: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup/hp-photosmart-plus-b209a-m-driver-inst...
I hope someone can give me a tip because I am really out of options here.
I appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Ricardo

Oracle 11g R2 Client Silent Installation Issue (PATH) Windows 7 x86
Hi All,
I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on this issue.
I created a Response file using the 'Save Response File' method during an interactive installation on a Windows 7 Enterprise x86 client. (file enclosed)
I have installed it multiple times now with multiple permutations of the command line (got caught out by the old lower case F in responseFile) but now I'm getting the same error each time (a critical error with the PATH according to the installation log). There is nothing wrong with the path length as the installation works fine in GUI mode and passes the Prereq check.
I launch the command line to install (with Run As Administrator) - "[location of setup.exe]\setup.exe" -nowait -silent -responseFile "[location of response file]\Oracle11gv2.rsp"

Cisco VPN Client installation freezes on Windows 7
Hello,
I am in need of some help installing the Cisco VPN Client on a Windows 7 workstation.
Here are some details:
Cisco VPN Client Version: 5.0.07.0410
Operation System: Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit, version 6.1, build 7600
PC Hardware: IBM Thinkpad T42, Type 2373-7WE
Issue Description:
I attempted to install the Cisco VPN Client on the computer with the local administrator account in Windows 7. The computer was given a clean installation of Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (Existing HDD partitions were deleted and formatted). After the OS installation, I installed the network driver via Windows Update, and proceeded to run the installation for the Cisco VPN Client. The installation apears to proceed smoothly until the installation progress indicator reaches the point where it states that it is installing the "Deterministic Network Enhancer." Shortly reaching this point, the Windows CPU Usage monitor reaches 100% and the operating system freezes.
I have tried the following actions, which failed to successfully install the software:
a) Installing Cisco VPN Client 5.0.00.0340 produced the same problem.
b) Reformatted the hard drive, installed Windows 7, and tried to install the Cisco VPN Client again, but failed.
c) Used Windows 7 System Restore to restore OS state prior to the installation of the Cisco VPN Client. Then, ran Citrix's winfix.exe tool. After that, I ran Citrix's dneupdate.msi program for 32-bit Windows operating systems, but that also crashed the OS mid-way through the installation/update.
d) This URL from Citrix (http://www.citrix.com/lang/English/lp/lp_1680845.asp) suggested changing a Windows registry key, then try re-installing the Cisco VPN Client. However, that did not work.
I am at a loss as to how to resolve this issue. If anyone can provide some suggestions or a solution to this issue, I would greatly appreciate it.

Stream 14 Driver installation Issues on Windows 7
I am wierdly struggling with something I have done countless times before with other laptops - remove Windows 8 and install Windows 7 I've so far disabled Secure Boot, Enabled legacy support, removed all hard drive partitions and installed Windows 7 which has gone on without issue, the problem is the driver installation. I (as always) download the drivers from: -a) The PC manufacturer if present (not in this case)b) Direct from the hardware vendor I do not use driver download software (trust issues) The first problem driver is the AMD chipset driver, I have downloaded the Catalyst driver many times and yet each install does not actually install any usable drivers (v14.12) which lists the chipset as supported OK, I'll download the broadcom driver for the inbuilt wifi, this was confirmed by the VEN and PID numbers however despite downloading the correct broadcom driver it did not install the wifi device. I thought OK, i'll add a wifi dongle and use that to triple check I have the right chipset driver by using their auto detect feature. However the same problem has occured, I checked the VED and PID number against realteks drivers to find the right one but it will not install this either. This has, at the moment, left me with a HP Stream 14 with Windows 7 and no drivers and no internet connection to use driver dectection. Note: drivers downloaded and copied onto Stream 14 using my PC. Any Thoughts?
Hey, tsumbled upon your thread googling for the same thing. Changed OS from Windows 8.1 to 7. Managed to install USB3 driver, by installing AMD Chipsets drivers from AMD's site, the latest ones should work. Chipset driver also installs support for HDMI Audio, SM Bus, SATA, PSP. I also had problem installing graphics driver (Radeon R3), the latest Catalyst drivers (15.7) weren't working (the .inf file didn't contain needed DEV_9854). But fortunately the Latest Windows Beta driver (15.6) from AMD did work. Broadcom BCM43142 Wifi driver, I downloaded from HP - http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?idx=2&swEnvOID=&action=driverDocument&itemLocale=&swLang=&swItemId=ob_133353_1&mode=4 For the rest, Windows 8.1 drivers worked.

Hi,
I want to make a installer file for auto installing the ssl certificate. My folder contains following files:
1. importpfx.exe
2. Main.java
3. Main.class
4. TestCertificate.p12
I want to bundle above files into a single setup file. How should it be done?
Thanks in AdvanceIf you want to make an installer file for windows, i think below link is suitable for your requirement. I never tried this approach of creating the installer file of java applications. But while reading the description of it, i thought that it may suits to your requirement.
Here is the link : http://www.ej-technologies.com/products/install4j/overview.html
Description : install4j is a powerful multi-platform Java installer builder that generates native installers and application launchers for Java applications. install4j excels in its ease of use, its extensive platform support and its powerful screen and action system

Is there a workaround on installation of drivers (Windows support drivers)?
I get a crash everytime I try to install these drivers on my Bootcamp partition.
Windows does a crash dump and restarts computer. I do not know exactly at what point during the installation of the Windows Support drivers this happens.
Other comments: I am using at the moment generic PC mouse and keyboard connected via USB as my bluetooth drivers have not installed properly (it seems).
Thanks for any help!Forgot to mention, I installed Windows 7 Professional with service pack 1 debugged and checked build 64-bit.
