Uese discoverer as a BI tool

Hi,
I just have a simple question. Can I use Oracle Discoverer as a BI tool to report out of Data warehouse Cube created with OWB? If so any particuler version?
We are using OWB with Oracle 11g R2 (11.2.0.2).
Thanks
David

So, its a relational database. There is no reason why you can't use discoverer with a realational database. Oracle discoverer 11g should be used with oracle database 11g. Earlier discoverer versions might be compatible with oracle database 11g, but you need to explore.
Thanks.

  • Limitations of Discoverer compared to Other Reporting tools

    Hi,
I need to evaluate the Pro's and Con's of Oracle Discoverer. Can u please tell me the advantages and disadvantages when compared to Business Objects, Cognos or any other Reporting Tool.
    Thanks, Prasad

    Hey Prasad.
Now there's an open question (ie: which is better, Ford or Chevy).
I'm sure this has been address on this forum before so you might want to perform a search for this subject.
However, dipping my toes in the pool ...
    1. Oracle is pushing Discoverer as an important tool in their repertoire. Future versions will now interface with XML Publisher (now BI Publisher), etc. so it's tightly inter-woven into Oracle. BO, Cognos, etc. are 3rd. party tools and therefore not tightly woven.
    2. If running Oracle Apps, then you can use the BIS views for pre-written views, Disco workbooks, etc. It's simply not practical to try to use BIS without Discoverer.
    3. Newest version of Disco (10g r2) now supports OLAP. Badly ... but it's a start.
    4. Oracle is really pushing the idea of everything being in the database and therefore they are pushing OLAP, DW stuff in the database along with your relational stuff. What this means in tools is that they're strongly pushing Disco with OLAP instead of a customer having to buy hardware, software (ie: Hyperion, Cognos, etc.), people (dbas to manage, software types to program), etc. and exporting your data from the Oracle database to a 3rd. party database to then report on. Again, Disco with OLAP (and someday if actual possible / practical) mixing your OLTP stuff with OLAP stuff.
    5. It's been awhile since I used BO and Cognos so not sure if their newest versions have the same idea of 3 versions (well 2 someday) where you create the report with Plus (or Desktop) and allow users to lightly manipulate (but not create) existing reports using a simple HTML browser (Viewer).
    6. Discoverer is a neat name as it sounds like you're stuttering ...
I'm sure they'll be lots of other reasons stated by others on this board, but if I was betting the farm on where to go, I would go with Discoverer if I had an Oracle installation. It'll cost you - and Oracle is definitely in it for making a buck or two - but if you're in for a penny with Oracle databases, etc., then you're in for a pound and using 3rd party tools that may do the same, less or even a bit more, never appeals to me as Oracle will either catch up and surpass them ... or let's be realistic ... buy them out! Like Microsoft, they've been doing that lately with a spare few billion dollars falling out of Larry's pockets.

  • Differance between Discoverer and BI Discoverer

hi guyz ,am new to ebs and discoverer, one question always bother me what is differance in discoverer and BI Discoverer, according to my understanding discoverer is separate tool where we develop report then link it to BI and BI Discoverer is EBS builtin tool.if am right so what both r oracle product ,if it's also true why we need both ,why not single is enough.thanx

    Hi,
There is no difference. Discoverer is shipped with eBS but it is the same tool (though an older version) as the standalone Discoverer. eBS is also shipped with an predefined EUL and some reports which are integrated into some of the eBS menus. You can write your own reports and create your EUL and add the reports to the menus.
There are 4 Discoverer tools. Discoverer Plus, a web based report writing tool. Discoverer Viewer a web based report viewing tool. Discoverer Desktop, a windows based report writing tool and Discoverer Administrator used for managing the EUL.
You need all these tools to use Discoverer with eBS and they should be downloaded separately from eBS to ensure you have the latest versions.

  • 10.1.2 App Server and Discoverer

    Hello,
I'm attempting to install and configure Discoverer. I have installed the 10.1.2 Infrastructure successfully. As I read the docs for Installing the MidTier, I run into confusion. in part 7 of the Oracle Application Server (10.1.2) Quick Installation Guide, titled Installing Portal and Wireless or Business Intelligence and Forms Developer Topology. It claims that I will have a Business Intelligence and Forms option on the Installation Type screen. Well, this is not true. I have the following options after I choose Mid Tier: J2EE & Web Cache and Portal and Wireless. I don't have a BI & Forms option. Now, I did put the 3 cd's of BI on the machine in assuming that I will need them.
Do I need to install J2EE & Web Cache OR Portal and Wireless from the App Server Disk, or do I just need to install Bus. Intelligence from the 3 BI cd's? The documentation seems to have been a quick copy/paste from a previous version with pieces/steps missing. Thanks in advance,
    Kelly

    Hi Kelly,
The Oracle Application Server Middle Tier Installation should have the BI option - I just installed the Oracle Application Server 10.1.2.0.0 & as mentioned on the Installer Page, I saw have all these products :-

  • Installation of Oracle Discoverer for PeopleSoft and Oracle apps(11.5.10)

    Hello Gurus,
I hope I am in the right forum. I have been assigned to install Oracle Discoverer for Oracle ERP (11.5.10). We currently have a Oracle Discoverer environment for Peoplesoft. My questions are follows.
    1. Can I use the existing Oracle Discoverer which is used to get PeopleSoft data for Oracle Applications (11.5.10) ?? This way I avoid installing another copy of Discoverer. In Future, if we could use the existing technology for other Databases.
    2. If I go in for a new install of Oracle Discoverer, what is that I need to install ? I am guessing, there should be
    1. Desktop application on the client
    2. Do I need to install anything on the server ?
    3. I will have a Oracle Discoverer database
I guess 1. (Desktop application) would be installed on all desktops ? Is there a web based thingy ?? For 2 and 3 I would require the DBA's to help me out.
Would anyone have a high level diagram of the things that go in for installation ? I would really appreciate if you could send it to kiranramachandra at yahoo dot com.
    Thanks folks
    Kiran

    Hi,
    1. No, you don't need to reinstall Discoverer, you can just connect to the new database provided you have updated the TNSNames.ora file. However, before you can connect with Discoverer Desktop you will need to use Discoverer Admin to create a new Apps mode EUL in the Applications Database.
    2. You will need a client installation of Discoverer (Admin and Desktop). If you want to use the web based Discoverer Plus and Viewer tools you will need to a Oracle Application Server installation. If you are installing Discoverer 10g then you should install the Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition. But depending on your version and configuration you may need to install other tools.

  • How to start service to run Discoverer Viewer on 10.2 EE on web-port 7778?

I have installed 10.2 EntEdition db on Windows, with OLAP and DataMining options "on", and wish to know what steps can enable me to run Discoverer Viewer (for example, http://mymachine:7778/discoverer/viewer ). What service must be turned on for there to be a response on this port?
I have already started the DBconsole service (port 1158) , the isqplus service (port 5560 through isqlplusctl) and the tns listener service (through lsnrctl). What service do I start to get a response on port 7778 or 7777?
I hope I don't need AS to run Discoverer Viewer...

Any tool that can generate SQL can act as a reporting tool for Oracle OLAP

  • What is the future of Oracle Discoverer?

    http://www.infocaptor.com

    Hi Bob
You mustn't believe everything you hear from an Oracle sales person. The sales reps have a vested interest in making you believe that OBI SE, which includes Discoverer, will not be here because they earn a lot more commission if they can get you to use EE.
They are right though in that Oracle is developing a tool that will migrate the Discoverer metadata into the Siebel metadata but this is only aimed at making you upgrade to Siebel - which is about 4 to 5 times the cost of Discoverer by the way. Siebel won't be replacing Discoverer, it will be an alternative. A nice, sexy looking, powerful alternative, yet an alternative nevertheless.
Discoverer will still be here and you will then have a choice as to whether you stay with standard edition or migrate to enterprise edition. Now of course if you have plenty of money there is nothing stopping you from upgrading, but for most people that option is out of the question right now. Oracle would need to reduce the price for EE if it is to tempt most of the Discoverer organizations into EE. Heck, there are hundred of companies still using 3.1 never mind 10g Release 2. And how many folks who have 10.1.2 have upgraded to 10.1.2.2, even though its been out a few months now and fixes all those GUI issues that they have?
From what I know, Oracle never makes claims for a product more than 2 releases out and Discoverer certainly has 2 releases in the pipework. There's a release 10.1.2.3 due out in a couple of months and a major 11g release next year. After that it would have a support life of a minimum of 5 years, even if they stopped it after 11g, during which time anything can happen. As you know, 5 years in IT is an absolute age.
Your posting certainly makes for interesting reading though and I'm sure there will be plenty of commets. If you hear any other interesting snippets I'd love to hear.
    Best wishes
    Michael

  • Need Information on Discoverer Un-Scheduled Reports

    Hi All,
I don't find any link for the Discoverer section in Developer Tools, thats the reason I'm posting this thread under Reports Section.
My question here is, there are EUL tables which gives the detail information like last_run_date etc.. for the scheduled discoverer reports.
But I need the same information for the un-schedule reports, but I don't find any tables when a report ran last time.
Can any of you guys help me out from this issue.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi
I am new in discovere and have database, discovere administrator and BI tool install on my system. Please tell me from where i can open discovere tool and create a simple report from my database.
    Regards

    Hi,
    There are two ways
    1.Desktop
    2.URL
For 1 one very simple install Discoverer administrator and create a EUL in the Data base.
Then use Discoverer Desktop to create new report.
For 2 You have to install a application server and do the same step of 1 ( as given above) and viewer can use the URL to view the reports.

  • Oracle BI Discoverer 11g

    hi ,
    i have oracle database 11g as warehouse (O/S; windows xp Sp2) .
i am going to use Oracle BI Discoverer 11g as BI tools , i can not find it's software in OTN to download .
i have download "biee_windows_x86_101341.zip" and installed it but discoverer is not in that zip file .
    regards
    Padideh

    Hi Padideh
You will only see the pubic connection link if you install a full-blown appplication server and attach Discoverer to an infrastructure database. That database would have the OID schema.
You can certainly use Discoverer against a data warehouse. In fact working with star schemas is the best way to get Discoverer working well. You simply launch the Discoverer Administrator tool and create one or more business areas by importing object definitions from your target data warehouse. You do not need a patch for this.
May I give a word of advice? If you don't know how to go about creating good business areas and making database content available to users via Discoverer then you should get some training. Trying to make Discoverer work well against a data warehouse with no knowledge of Discoverer or OWB will give you problems and could cause you to have an unsuccessful implementation. My company does training in the US at good rates (http://ascbi.com/training) if you are interested, or you can go to an Oracle University class (http://education.oracle.com and type discoverer into the serach box at top right) or just look on line where you will find lots of companies offering training courses. If you are outside the US I know of several places in the UK or, as I say, take a look at the Oracle University offerings.
In a previous part of this thread you asked about the metadata repository and repositort assistant. Those both belong to Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) and have nothing to do with Discoverer.

  • So why to use Discoverer ?

    Dear all,
after working as a developer since 1986 with Oracle RDBMS Rev.4 and all those Application Tools (starting with Forms 2.0, raf(rapid application facility) or whatever it was called) I wonder should I talk my customers into using Discoverer Version WHAT.

but, what about connecting to 8.1.7
but, look at the staus of this forum : just questions, hardly answers
does all this web hype work right now ?
do you have to be a super java/xml/html engineer ?, I'm just a elementary particle physicist, making his money with Oracle rdbms and Tools since almost 20 years.
         any 10-version experiences available ?
         any 9-version solid experiences ?
I'm ready to jump, any water in the pool ?

    Rainer,
Hello to a fellow old timer. Started in '88 with Oracle Add-in for Lotus 1-2-3. Then joined Oracle to support RDBMS 5.1 and SQLForms/Report/Menu and other products.
Now a Product Manager for Discoverer so I have an obvious bias so take it as it is.
Q: I wonder should I talk my customers into using Discoverer Version WHAT.
A: Yes please do and make it Discoverer 9.0.4 included in Oracle Application Server 10g (9.0.4)
Q: but, what about connecting to 8.1.7
A: no problem -- yes Discoverer will run against DB 8.1.7
When running against higher versions like 9i and 10g Disco
will take advantage of enhanced functionality like Enhanced Data Aggregation and incremental refresh of Materialized Views.
Q: but, look at the staus of this forum : just questions, hardly answers
A: Well I can give you 7 answers right now. Just trying to keep up with the high demand and limited staff.
Q: does all this web hype work right now ?
A: Absolutely. It's pretty cool actually. We have a builder/analysis tool that downloads as a Java applet (Discoverer Plus); a Viewer tool (pure HTML from a browser) that allows you to run worksheets and analyze/drill/pivot etc.; and integration with Oracle Portal so you can include Discoverer content in a Portal Page.
Q: do you have to be a super java/xml/html engineer ?,
A: You don't need to do any coding to use Discoverer.
The most challenging part will likely be designing the
Metadata (Business Areas in the Discoverer End User Layer) to enable your end users access to their data. If you want to customize Viewer you can modify an XML file if you really want to code -- but it is not required. Should be a piece of cake for a particle physicist!
    Q: any 10-version experiences available ?
    Q: any 9-version solid experiences ?
A: I assume you are referring to Application Server versions. We have successful customers on 9.0.2 and 10g (9.0.4) but we obviously are encouraging customers to get up to the 9.0.4 release. It has the most functionality and is very stable.
Q: I'm ready to jump, any water in the pool?
A: Come on in. The water's fine.

  • Using Discoverer with 4i

    Hi All,
I want to use the discoverer which comes along with the E-Business suite 11i. Can you suggest how can i configure the discoverer client.
    Thanks,
    Prashanth.

Before install, assure you have an Oracle client installed
    Install:
    1) Download "Oracle Business Intelligence Tools 10g (10.1.2.0.2) for Microsoft Windows" from here
    2) Execute setup.exe
    3) Remember the %ORACLE_HOME% used (ussually C:\oracle\BIToolsHome_1)
    Configuration:
    1) Databases must appear in the %TNS_ADMIN%\tnsnames.ora
If you are trying to connect through an Applications database, also:
    2) Create a directory secure under %ORACLE_HOME%\discoverer
    3) Copy there the .dbc files of each Applications environment
    4) Define a system environment variable FND_SECURE=%ORACLE_HOME%\discoverer\secure
    5) Add to the regedit, in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Oracle\Discoverer 10\Database, the following entries:
    a) EnableTriggers, type DWORD, value 1
    b) DefaultPreserveDisplayPropertyForRefresh, type DWORD, value 1
    6) Open Discoverer Administrator, go to Tools -> Options, and check "both" in the connect options
    7) Set the values of GWYUID and FNDNAM for Applications. These values are in the .dbc files, but ussually are: GWYUID=APPLSYSPUB/PUB and FNDNAM=APPS
    Helpfull?
