Ugh!  What is this crazy machine telling me?

I am trying to get the Mail Services in OSX server working. When I was unable to connect to the server on port 25, I changed SMTP logging so that it would start spitting out everything, not just the Critical stuff. Now the machine just keeps pumping out this error:
Dec 27 09:30:37 ool-6038dd35 postfix/master[13363]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 13896 exit status 1
Dec 27 09:30:37 ool-6038dd35 postfix/master[13363]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
Dec 27 09:31:37 ool-6038dd35 postfix/smtpd[13941]: fatal: open database /var/mailman/data/virtual-mailman.db: No such file or directory
This is a brand new server, with OSX Server pre-installed on it, so I'd assume that Apple would have this service working, and this file it's looking for already installed.
Can anyone assist in troubleshooting so I can get this show on the road?
Many thanks,
Gary

Pterobyte,
Thanks for responding. Yes, I mistakenly 'tried to create mailing lists for virtual domains' because I was following an Apple Support doc that I thought was used to actually create the Virtual Domains. I later found out from Apple Phone Support that the document was the wrong one to use.
So I did your first fix below. Now the log keeps spitting out:
Dec 28 09:10:49 ool-6038dd35 postfix/smtpd[83921]: fatal: open database /var/mailman/data/virtual-mailman.db: No such file or directory
Dec 28 09:10:50 ool-6038dd35 postfix/master[83843]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 83921 exit status 1
Dec 28 09:10:50 ool-6038dd35 postfix/master[83843]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
Over and over again.

  • What is this Time Machine?

    Hi All,
I currently have a 24" iMac C2D and have a LaCie FW HD partitioned to backup my entire volume and my Home folder. I use Silverkeeper and the Backup volume is completely bootable. I thinking of upgrading to Leopard and wonder if Time Machine will take the place of this backup routine, or do I still need to do this. I have had my hard drive crap out and wonder if you'll be able to recover everything if your HD goes with Leopard.
    Thanks
    Nano

You will still need Silverkeeper to make bootable backups (once it is verified for Leopard.) Time Machine creates multiple backups of your system (changed files) every hour for 24 hours, every day, etc. Time Machine backups are restorable by time and can keep multiple copies of the same changed files.
    Regards,

Any help would be much appreciated.

That's a problem writing to the Time Machine drive.
As BDAqua says, verify your internal HD and repair the external, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, try the things in the green box of #D2 there.

This is asked at least 5-6 times a day here.
Look at the right hand column.. more like this.
It is a bug in Mountain Lion.
    Read C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But the fast solution.. unplug the TC.. count to 10.. plug it back in.

  • My Power Mac G4 booted from an OS 9.1 install CD, and then froze up.  Now I turn the machine on, beeps 3 times, power button blinks 3 times.  What does this mean?

I tried to install Mac OS 9.1.  I turned the computer on, heard the bong noise (although with some static), and inserted the OS 9.1 installation CD.  It started to boot, but froze up.  I rebooted the machine, and the same thing happened.  One more reboot, and i get 3 beeps and the power button is blinking.  What does this mean?

Hi, it indicates a RAM problem, (or Logic Board around the RAM).
The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep  = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • What do I do when I get this Time Machine message?  The backup disk image "/Volumes/Mark McConnell's Time Capsu/Mark's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

What do I do when I get this Time Machine error message?
"The backup disk image “/Volumes/Mark McConnell's Time Capsu/Mark’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."

Unplug your Time Capsule from power. Wait 10 seconds and then power it on again. When the light goes green try backing up again.

  • Can anyone tell me what this Time Machine error means? The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features?

Can anyone tell me what this Time Machine error means? The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features?

    AFP - Apple Filing Protocol
The Network Attached Storage (NAS) that you are pointing Time Machine at does not have the features needed by Time Machine in order to do its Thing.  Time Machine needs some specific features that are not typically available on generic networked storage devices.
There are manufactures that support the Mac OS X HFS+ file system formats and implement all the needed AFP protocol packets necessary so that they can be used with Time Machine, but apparently yours does not.
If you are not using a networked mounted volume for Time Machine, then more information will be needed about your Time Machine setup.

I have zero idea what this message is telling me.  I signed in but I was not given any on-screen instructions. Please have a non-nerd write this again.

What type of account have you signed in with ? The instructions only apply to AOL username accounts, if you've signed in to an account that's an AOL email address then you don't need to do anything with it, it's only usernames (e.g. account id's without the '@aol.com' part) that are affected.
If it is a username account then when you sign in via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes you should be prompted to change it an email address (you can't use an email address that is already the primary email address on an iTunes account)

Are the lines like psychedelic herringbone?  If yes, I had that happen once, it was something serious, like the
Logic board. The good news is that it was fixed without any loss of data on the hard drive. Take it in to have Apple look at it ASAP.  I took it to TekServe at the time, they are very nice about preserving your data and user library when possible.
    Good luck and don't panic.

You cannot upgrade to snow leopard. Snow leopard was the first of os x to drop support for the motorola ppc processors. The latest you could possibly run would be leopard.
    Hope it helps,
