Ugly interlacing problem in FCP

I am working on a stop-motion animation done with a digital camera and also have a couple of live action clips filmed with a dv camcorder.
I rendered the stop-motion shots into QT mov files in FCP using animation as the compression and then brought them into the project timeline and added some of the live footage as well.
The problem is that when I preview the timeline (or scrub it) the clips created from the digital camera shots look fine but the clips from the live footage have that ugly interlacing effect where the edges of the moving elements break up into little horizontal lines. Even if I render the timeline to a QT movie, the problem persists.
I also tried rendering the live footage on its own with de-interlace footage ticked, but that just made it look rougher.
Can anyone suggest how to get the live footage to look as clean as the clips created from the digital stills?

Where are you rendering? If in FCP, click on the clip in the timeline, type ⌘9 and change the Field Dominance to None.

Unusual interlacing problem

I recently shot a short 16mm film and got it telecined to DV NTSC with timecode/keycode window-burn. I imported the flex file I got from the lab into a Cinema Tools 4 database, then exported a batch capture list, and captured the footage into FCP 6. Everything seemed to have worked correctly, with the window-burn on the video matching the timecode and keycode information in CT. HOWEVER, when viewing the footage in the CT window, certain frames have interlacing problems. The pattern is:
A2, B2, C1, D1, D3
For every frame, the last number on the burned-in timecode is a bit fuzzy, but for every C1 and D1 the last number on the timecode and the last two numbers on the keycode are barely legible. C1 and D1 are also the two frames when the video image has an interlaced look to it.
And this is happening BEFORE I have even tried to reverse telecine! The footage has none of these problems when viewing on FCP and the original quicktime videos look fine as well. It is only in the CT window that I get this problem.. I am planning on eventually getting the negative conformed from an EDL list, and am worried this problem might be a sign of some sort of discrepancy between the film negative and the Cinema Tools database.
The info I entered into the database initially was TK Speed: 24 and TC Rate: 30 NDF, but have tried experimenting with different variations, none of which fixed the problem. ALSO, when I went ahead and reverse telecined the clips with CT, it took out every D1 frame correctly, but the interlacing and illegible numbers problem persisted. When I connected the new reverse telecined clip into FCP, the problem was still there. But when I checked the new reverse telecined clip quicktime file, everything looked perfect, without the interlaced look in the image, with completely legible window-burn, and with every D1 removed. So I figure it must be a problem with Cinema Tools!
I apologize for the long post, but I'm a student filmmaker trying desperately to get my senior film together and avoid possibly costly and time-consuming mistakes down the road. Any thoughts/ advice would be greatly, greatly, appreciated!

Converted MP4 to DV now I have an interlaced problem that I cant fix

Using Quick time Conversion I converted a MP4 movie to DV for editing in FCP, after which I have a bad interlacing problem. I used the Effect de-interlace and all of its drop down options with no change. I also changed the field dominance from None to Upper and Lower with still no changes. Should I convert to another format initially instead of DV, or is there a fix I am just not seeing.

No, sorry there is only one (streamclip).
Can you describe what the problem looks like. Do moving objects appear to stagger back as they move across the screen (field reversal), or do you have a really bad shimmer? If your picture is shimmering try using a Gaussian Blur at a setting of 0.5 or so, this will add a slight but not too bad blur that masks the flickering of thin lines much like the flicker filter.
If object moving across the screen appear to jerk erratically I'd check the frame rate of the MP4 is the same as your timebase (25/30fps).

Interlacing problem - display issue or something else?

Hi, another interlacing question...
So I captured my footage (originally shot on film, telecined to digibeta) at 10 bit uncompressed to do my online (the offline edit was a 29.97 DVCam dub of that digibeta). Since I'm finishing on 29.97 digibeta, I didn't remove the pulldown as I captured offline or online, and am editing both at my finishing medium's frame rate. So yes, I have the duped fields in there, but it also keeps things simple and I've theoretically been seeing exactly what the finished version will look like the whole time.
Last time I did this workflow I used a G4 running a dual 867 processor with a gig of RAM, and I had some jitter and interlacing "comb" visible when I watched the 10-bit on the Mac, but when I output to digibeta and DVD, it looked fine. So it appeared to be that my computer simply didn't have the juice to display it properly, but that the media itself was fine, as were both ways of outputting.
Now I have a spankin' new Mac Pro with a quad 2.66G processor and 3Gigs of RAM, so I figured that "display issue" was behind me. But not only do I still see jitter and comb on my computer monitor, I also see it much worse on the test DVD I just made. So the problem isn't just the display. The look is very similar to when you capture a clip and remove the pulldown, but fail to start capture on an A frame (but since this is all 29.97, I know that isn't the problem).
I thought it might be that the drives were not fast enough, so I reformatted two of my internal drives into a Raid 0 and put the media there and reconnected it. The raid seems happy, and it's less than half full, but the video doesn't look any better.
Any idea what else could be causing this? I did just upgrade the project from the FCP 4.5 version I started to the FCP 6 on the new machine, plus my experience has been that moving from offline DV to online can allow in some bugs, but the ins/outs, clip names, frame rates, haven't changed. And of course I've been editnig 29.97 DV this whole time without seeing any of the interlacing on the monitor or tyhe outputs. Could field dominance have anything to do with this? I've never adjusted that in previous applications of this workflow, so it doesn't seem relevant, but I confess I'm not sure what I'm messing with there. Do I need still more RAM? The computers we ran at school a couple of years ago were running 10 bit video on G5s without significant upgrades to my knowledge, and this is just a single stream with a few tracks of audio here. I'm afraid to spend any more $$ until I'm pretty confident it'll solve the problem (shoestring budget here of course). Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. I don't really have a way to hook up my computer to a broadcast monitor. I know I should, but can't really afford the card to do it. So I color corrected my footage carefully during telecine, and for things like this issue, I'm making DVDs quick and dirty through iDVD, then watching them on my home TV (an LCD that plays both SD and HD).
I suppose something in my DVD player and/or TV might be giving me the weirdness in the display, but I think I mentioned I did this same workflow before on a lowly G4, and back then while the computer display showed the interlacing problems, the final output looks fine on the same TV/DVD setup I'm using now. (And I also output that timeline on the previous project to a digibeta master and it looked great too--unfortunately no way to test that digibeta output on the present project without going to a post house, which of course cuts into the budget.)
Maybe I need to bite the bullet and stop being so cheap, but I'm hung up on the fact that it worked fine before, and I can't see how this stronger computer is performing comparatively poorly.
BTW I do see the interlacing in FCP viewer and canvas, but only when it's set to 100% size. And it looks identical in Quicktime as well.
The other thought that just occurred to me is that it might be a codec issue. Perhaps the uncompressed 10 bit codec on my new machine isn't quite the same 10 bit uncompressed as the Kona card used to capture the video for both new and old projects. Maybe my old computer worked ok because that codec was slightly different, or I may have even copied the codec to that computer at some point in the past.
Any of this spur any other ideas? Again I really appreciate the help...

Interlace Problems - Can't figure it out!

am struggling to get the bottom of an interlace problem I'm having recently. Up until now, I've not had any issues with my workflow. I'd record in HD, import as apple Pro res 422, edit, and then export quicktime self contained movie to then process through compressor. I created a DVD recently and tested it only to discover terrible interlacing lines, and I do mean 'terrible'!! The puzzling thing for me is that the Quicktime file appears to be fine with no interlace issues - it's only when I go through compressor that it produces an interlace problem.
I could just choose to de-interlace through compressor, but I'm concerned as to why this is happening in the first place as it didn't before, and I shouldn't have to de-interlace through compressor (it will also bring down the quality of footage by doing it)
I have tried taking one clip on a new sequence in FCP, and saving it as QT movie and running through COMPR and it's fine, but I cannot see any difference at all in the settings of my edited sequence.
Can it possibly be a capture issue?
Can it be an Export issue?

right, I appear to have sorted it. I changed my Quicktime video settings (under 'sequence > Settings') to Compressor : Apple ProRes (LT) instead of the 422. Have done some small tests and it appears to be fine although still to run the main edit through this. Very strange as I would have never figured this out, was a friend who advised me.
Anyone explain why ProRes 422 (LT) instead of just ProRes 422, would have fixed this?

Problems with FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9

I upgraded to Tiger, installed the new FCP Studio and everything was working fantastic.
The next morning there was a software update for Tiger and FCP-5.1.4, it's been a nightmare ever since. When I restarted FCP would not recognize my Sony HDR FX1.
I had this problem once before with 4.5 and I fixed it by re-installing FCP and doing the upgrades, so that's what I did with 5 but this time there was a new problem. It wouldn't let me work on anything that I had opened since I did the software update, so I had to do the update again and then FCP wouldn't recognize my camcorder again on startup. If you pressed log and capture you could control the camera but no capture was possible.
So I re-set the easy set-up and presto! everything was fine and I worked productively for a few days.
But then I had to capture some SD from my Canon GL2 so I reset all the settings for DV NTSC and reset the easy set-up for DV NTSC but now FCP won't recognize my GL2 on start-up. If I click log and capture I can control the camera but no capture.
My next try to solve my problem was to downgrade back to my original 10.4.6 and FCP 5.1
That put be back to square one and everything works fine again except I am left with the problem that everything that I worked on after I did the update won't open, I get error 41.
Now I know this is because I am now trying to work on these projects with 5.1 after they were worked on in 5.1.4. But the problem is that everytime I update to 5.1.4 I can no longer capture or print to tape.
I tried the trashing the FCP prefs thing and the repairing permissions thing but I can't seem to solve the problem.
Has anyone else had any problems using FCP 5.1.4 and OSX 10.4.9?

Not sure how you tried to install 10.4.8 but if all
else fails you can always reinstall the original
operating system that came with your Mac using 'Erase
and Install' then upgrade it to 10.4.8 - probably in
stages.
Erase and install should be used as a last resort! A better option is to use the "archive and install" feature. It renames your old system folder and creates a new one for the OS you just re-installed. That way you don't have to reinstall everything, your user accounts and emails should all still be there, and if something doesn't work, you have your old system folder to pull things like preference files out of.

I had an MP4 file (created by a 3rd party) from a Hi-8 analog tape which has some interlace artifacts on moving images (left image of boy) but not too bad. When the MP4 files was imported into iMovie 11 the interlace artifacts smoothed somewhat - that was OK (right image of boy). The camera was still and the boy was moving. Vertical lines on stationary objects are OK in all images. These are screen captures from the Mac of the mp4 played through quicktime and the same file imported into iMovie 11 and played. I paused both to take the screen capture.
The completed project in iMovie 11 looked OK when previewed prior to rendering. These are 20 year old videos so my expections were being met.   I rendered the project with iDVD to the hard drive first and then to a DVD with the same poor imaging result on the moving object. I am using a new Macbook Pro I bought in early January which came with iMovie 11 and iDVD Ver 7.1.2 (1158). Running Mac OS X 10.7.3 Macbook Pro 2.3 Ghz Corei7   8GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.
I couldn't screen capture from the MAC DVD player screen to illustrate the poor result (got a checkerboard screen) so I took a photo of the screen and imported that (below). The moving boy on the left is from an iMovie 11 screen capture, the image on the right is the moving boy from the rendered DVD I paused on the Mac (and took a pic of).
Below a close up of the poorly rendered moving boy viewed on the resultant DVD. This translates into a horrible rendition of any quick moving object. It happens with any moving image - i.e. a pan across a room with straight vertical lines like edges of a wall will show as serrated and poorly rendered edge. I used a trial version of the Daniusoft DVD creator with the same result! I am at a loss on how to resolve this issue. Any thoughts out there??

TV Shows - Interlacing Problems

I've had this problem since before iTunes 7.
Whenever I play TV Shows I purchased off iTunes I see what I believe is called an interlacing problem. For example, when I watch mouths (whatever in the scene moves continuously) in The Avatar I see what I can best describe as horizontal lines that don't line up correctly making part of the moving image looks our of place.
Of course I am using a 21' Widescreen Dell LCD so maybe that has something to do with it. Also I have an ATI 850XL 256MB graphics card. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows why it may be doing this please reply.

You have to contact iTunes customer support.
They'll give you a new download or credit your account.

I am working on a volunteer project for a local museum wherein some old VHS tapes need to be digitized. The final video (probably MPEG-2) will be accessible from research computers at the museum. File size is not a big issue, but preserving as much quality (such as it is) from the 10+ year old VHS (not SVHS) tapes is essential.
So I feed the analog output from my tape deck to my Sony TVR310 camcorder for A/D conversion, then capture from there to my PC via firewire. I have tried capturing via the software that came with my Edius (a.k.a. Canopus) card, and also directly into Premiere. Same thing happens both times.
On the exported video (AVI, MPG1, MPG2) I see these wavy edges on the left and right sides of high-contrast areas. See the guy's hat in the attached image (if it ever gets outa the queu). Does this look like a compression artifact? Or is it an interlace problem? I do not see this effect when I watch the original video on my TV.
Note that Premiere reports the average data rate for the 720x480 @ 29.97 fps clip as 3600 kb/s. So when I export to MPEG I set the data rate at 5000 kb/s.
When I process and export the video in Premiere, I have "no fields" selected everywhere, and for the actual export I have selected the "de-interlace" option. Since this is for viewing on computers only, I figured that was the correct thing to do.
Edited: I should also mention that I do not see this effect in the monitor window when I scrub the clip on the timeline.

The first time I tried with the capture settings reset to LFF, and then tried to export (as uncompressed AVI), specifying "no fields" in the "keyframe and rendering" dialog box, and selecting "deinterlace" in the "special processing" dialog box, I still got those artifacts.
THEN ... after searching the help file for "deinterlace" and reading all the linked pages, I tried right-clicking on the clip on the timeline, went to "video options" / "field options" and selected "always deinterlace." Had to re-render on the timeline. Then, after exporting same as before, the artifacts were finally gone.
So you were correct about it being an interlacing issue. Thanks for the insight! GSpot now reports the exported video as 29.97 frames and 0 fields.
Here's a puzzle though ... I tried the same thing with the original clip (the one captured as progressive instead of LFF) and it smoothed out as well. Perhaps Premiere is smart enough to recognize what it's getting for input, and ignores stupid commands? Whatever, this means I can use my original footage and not have to recapture 1.5 hours of video.

I imported many video in 1080i format using Final Cut Pro, and when I play back them from quicktime I've got interlace problem. How can I have my video played back correctly ?

And you are monitoring...how? Computer displays don't show interlacing properly, so you won't see it right. Only an external monitor that is capable of displaying interlacing will show you how things really look.

Problem Installing FCP Studio 2 on SL 10.6.2

Hello All
when trying to install an original FCP Studio 2,
the installation gets stuck towards the end. (around 95% of the first general installation disk).
this has happened 3 times.
After rebooting, the programs seems to be in the application folder.
but they are missing many files and meterial.
( because i did'nt get a chanse to go through the other Content disks... )
did anyone had a problem installing FCP Studio 2 on SL ?

Here's a way to work around the possiblitily of a damaged disk or an intermittent dvd reader.
Insert your FCS install disk, make a disk image of it (using Disk Utility) and leave the image on the Desktop. Eject the FCS install disk, and create a disk image for each of the FCS disks.
Now, with all the images on the desktop, double click on the install disk image and start the installation process. It should take less than an hour to install EVERYTHING.
Once the installation is complete, copy the disk images to a safe place. You'll have them available if you ever need to reinstall FCS.

Problem with FCP since update to 10.0.6

I'm up to date on Mac OS X and FCP, but since updating to FCP 10.0.6 switching events causes it freeze.

Corrupt preference files are the cause of many many problems in FCP X. If that is the cause of your problem, then deleting preferences will solve it; otherwise it will at least do no harm.
(In case you don't know, most applications keep your preference settings in little files with .plist extension, in a "Preferences" folder. You usually don't notice and may not care about it unless they become corrupted and then your software may malfunction - as is the case here)
Pref Manager, which I mentioned in the previous post, is a free software which can delete (and optionally backup and restore, in case you want to) these .plist files, without you going to look for them in the Finder.
Deleting preferences does NOT affect your events and projects - it does not touch them. So it is innocuous and usually the first thing to try when FCP X misbehaves.
Jakob's post may well be on to something, especially if the problem happens with some events and not others.
If deleting preferences does not solve the problem, then you may have to delete some folders in the Finder. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I suggest you delete preferences and report back.
