Ugly Qt applications [SOLVED]

Sure I did. As you can see the theme got applied but not properly.

Sound from 1 application (solved)
I've got sound working on my Arch install (intel_8x0 driver) but sound still only plays from one application at a time. I'm up to date with Alsa 1.09 which I thought solved the issue. Any ideas?
> I do not think it is right to be making any judgements
> about where the ALSA development is headed
What do you mean? What such kind of judgement did I do? All I said is that software mixing does not work, it should have worked (sorry, but even half-assed old OSes like QNX, OS/2 and BeOS, Windows95 have automatic software mixing just fine) and that there was a talk that 1.0.9 WAS to bring automatic software mixing, but it didn't.
Last November there was a huge thread with me, Linus and the alsa guys discussing this very thing, with Linus pretty much asking for that same thing too. If Alsa guys want to be taken seriously (and they do want to, because they wanted to replace OSS in the kernel, which DOES have software mixing) they better get their act together. The lack of automatic software mixing is simply unforgivable after all these years of Alsa development. We are talking about ~80% of linux laptop users today can't play more than one sound at a time and many cheaper PC systems can't either (all the AC97 cards for example)! This is pathetic. I am sorry, but it is! This is 2005, even the Amiga could do automatic software mixing. (most of the users don't even know what's wrong, they think it's their distribution's fault!!!) -
Specialized applications [SOLVED]
I have been using Arch for last few weeks and have found it to be a great distro, all because of hard work of the developers here. However, when it comes to installing applications from specialized fields, there are always more applications available for other more popular distros, esp debian and ubuntu. For example, if I search of keyword 'dicom', there are far more results for ubuntu than for Arch:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywo … ection=all
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php? … _Search=Go
(There are no results in Arch binary package search).
How can I overcome this limitation?
On checking the forums and the wiki, makepkg with PKGBUILDs appear to be the main option. I had earlier used 'src2pkg' where I could download the source pkg and build it to a binary package with default options (simply giving the command 'src2pkg <pkgname.tar.gz>'), and it worked most of the time. src2pkg makes deb, rpm, tgz, pet and slitaz packages but not Arch packages. Is there a general PKGBUILD that I can use for compiling downloaded packages with makepkg command, without the need to write PKGBUILD everytime?
Thinking aloud, is it possible to point pacman or packer to ubuntu repository and to install packages from there? I don't think it is possible, though similar facility exists in some other distros.
Thanks for your help.
Last edited by rnarch (2012-05-27 02:20:13)PKGBUILDS are very easy. If the ./configure, make, make install commands would work, then it should take less than 5 minutes to make a PKGBUILD. Essentially the PKGBUILD would be a script to run those commands, and by doing it through a PKGBUILD pacman will be able to track the package. The only other effort of a PKGBUILD would be if a patch was needed to run on arch - but then you'd have to do this with the configure, make, make install route also.
Edit: perhaps a useful addition to the wiki (I have not found it yet - Just found it, see below) would be a step by step guide of going from source to PKGBUILD. All the information is there, but I do remember when I started it wasn't clear what order things should be done in. I now just barely know what I'm doing, but what works well for me is:
1) Create a temporary directory to work in.
2) Download the source into a 'src->packagename-packagever' directory.
3) cd to that subdirectory and try "./configure && make"
4a) if that works, go up to the top directory, get a template PKGBUILD, and edit appropriately
5a) run makepkg -g to put the checksum in the PKGBUILD
6a) run makepkg -i
7a) grab a beer, you're done.
4b) if 3 didn't work, then solve whatever problems arose - these steps would be exactly the same as when building from source in any other distro. There is nothing ARCH specific here, just make sure the software will build properly.
5b) once configure and make work, go on to 4a.
Edit again: yes, I will look around the wiki again, and if I do not see something like this I'll add it to the appropriate page - either PKGBUILD or makepkg. But I want to take some time to make sure it is done right rather than haphazardly editting the wiki.
I think a similar outline is already pretty well presented on the creating packages wiki so no need for anything new, unless it was to make the link to that article more prominent in the makepkg and PKGBUILD pages.

Problems with Viewing JPEGs in Preview Application Solved
Here is the fix that took care of JPG files in the Preview Application.
• First, remove the preference .plist files regarding Preview:
com.apple.Preview. bookmarks.plist
com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
com.apple.Preview.plist
• Second, download Snow Leopard 10.6.2 combo update (MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.2.dmg) from Apple Support and install the update.
• Third, the computer will restart with the 10.6.2 update installed and Preview works! Hope this works for you.remaltzman wrote:
I scan student work that is handwritten. I use preview to select a portion of that work and then I paste the portion of the image I have selected into pages or some other application. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard when I partially select an area in preview everything appears normal. But when I paste into another app it pastes the entire image, not the portion I have selected.
I don't know if this is related to your problem, but you might find this TidBITs discussion thread useful:

[sound] Select audio canal for each application [solved]
Hi all
After a long and unsuccessful search on the net I decide to post my question here.
I have a motherboard with the HDA chipset (4 output in the back) and I want to choose for each application the output.
For example : my music on the Master output (plugged to amp), my video on the Suround output (plugged to a helmet), all the other apps on the Side output (plugged to speakers) ...
I am actually whith ALSA and Pulseaudio, but I am ready to change all to do that (except the ditrib )
Thanks in advance
(sorry if my english is poor, I am french)
Last edited by sauliwx (2014-09-12 13:43:09)My bad, clipboard must have been turned off or I simply confused the links. Here the correct one, once again. Runtime arguments allow you to specify a pcm with parameters set upon execution:
speaker-test -c 2 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD DG DEV 0}"
# CARD D is one argument and DEV 0 the other. The original dmix takes more arguments
# see /usr/share/alsa/pcm/dmix.conf
# The one I proposed takes also channels number as runtime argument like so
speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plug:"dmix:{CARD SB DEV 0 SUBDEV -1 FORMAT S32_LE RATE 192000 CHANNELS 8}"
The more important thing is dsnoop, otherwise you might have problems when recording. This kind of configuration may end up similar to this proposed one. Similar when it comes to logical structure that is. You might want to try build your configuration into the latter one. Instead of this:
default {
# use pulse as default
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
hint {
show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
try this based on your part:
default {
type asym;
playback.pcm "green";
capture.pcm "dsnoop1";
fallback "sysdefault"
hint {
show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently green)"
You had no asym type plugin in there.
Edit: "fallback" might not only be unnecessary, it might conflict or cause an error within the configuration. Untested.

Mpd and gnome startup applications [SOLVED]
i am using mpd as a regular user (i couldnt get the permissions right when trying to follow the wiki's instructions)
so to start mpd i must execute:
mpd ~/.mpd/config
however, that doesnt work when pasted into gnome's startup applications, it also doesnt work when put under Exec= in a .desktop entry.
how can i make this executable so i dont have to type it? i'd rather not put it in .xinitrc
thanks.

bash -c "mpd ~/.mpd/config"
worked great. i just put it in gnome startup applications. -
Problem deploying an ADF Application - SOLVED
I am having a problem deploying an ADF Faces + BC4J application to my 10.1.3.1 App server. When I deploy to the Jdev embedded oc4j or to a standalone oc4j from Jdeveloper, everything works fine, but when I deploy to the app server, the first page submit gives me an error "Error setting property 'actionEvent' in bean of type null"
I can deploy and run a simple ADF Faces BC4J test page, but my real app fails.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?
I'm using Jdev 10.1.3.2, oc4j 10.1.3.1 and app server 10.1.3.1, all with the latest adf runtime.
Message was edited by:
mattysmithFrank,
some further information. My app has a login page, which is what gave me the error about an actionEvent. If I bypass the login page and go straight to the app I can open a jspx with adf components in it, but as soon as a submit the page (button clicks etc) I get the 'bean of type null' error. This time I can capture the stack though:

A very stupid question about MDic application[SOLVED]
I have tried StarDict in Arch which I think that is the best known dictionary application in Linux world. Since I had to use mouse to access StarDict, I decided to try MDic instead. My problems is that I do not know the default location of MDic dictionary files. After search topics for about two hours, I gave up.
There must be a directory where MDic searches for dictionary files. Where is it? or What MDic configuration file has the information? So, I can install dictionary files int to the directory. I looked for this information in http://mdic.gnufolks.org/ and google.com. I believe this kind of very fundamental information should be in the wiki fo MDic. But I couldn't find one. Maybe, it is because I am so idiot. Would somebody help me how to install MDic dictionary in a appropriate location or the default location? Thank you so much for your helps.
Last edited by since1992 (2010-11-06 11:28:30)Yes, it was a stupid question. I found that I can configure the location of the dictionary file. I also installed PyGlossary to convert dictionaries for MDic. Everything works fine now. Thank you.

A machine, that is dedicated to running an IVR application, is supposed to be available to take customer telephone inquiries 24/7. Sometimes the computer reboots itself, without taking a dump. The problem is to prove to the commercial IVR application developer
that their SKU is responsible for the reboot. As Windows neglects to log such events, I'm in a quandary. The IVR application also doesn't log its attempts to reboot the computer. We are running ProcMon, which may catch somebody in the act. So far there
hasn't been the lucky coincidence of ProcMon running and a reboot event.
MARK D ROCKMANHere is the content of an event log that seems pertinent:
The process C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe (P15) has initiated the restart of computer P15 on behalf of user P15\Ugen for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found
Reason Code: 0x500ff
Shutdown Type: restart
Comment:
Well, that's pretty disappointing. It names some operating system process that is instrumental in the restart. It tells what computer is being restarted. It tells what user logon account apparently initiated the restart, but not which application.
And it fails to interpret the Reason Code which is "I don't know what." Presumably a BSOD wouldn't look much like this. I wish the writers of this dreck would face facts and state the obvious. No pussyfooting around. If application
X with logon id Y asks for a reboot then say so.

Cannot compile db2 application [SOLVED]
OK ppl i really need your help.
I'm trying to compile a db2 program.
I have a sqc file.
I have done:
db2 prep 13.sqc bindfile
db2 bind 13.bnd
gcc -I$DB2DIR/include -I~/sqllib/include -c 13_01.c
and then when i try to do:
gcc -o program 13_01.o -Wl,-rpath,~/sqllib/lib32 -L~/sqllib/lib32 -ldb2
i get the following error:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ldb2
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I have LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/home/db2inst2/sqllib/lib32 and DB2 is version 9.7.
I have googled and googled and googled but i don't find the solution.
Can someone pls help me I need this so I can prepare for my exams but in classes they only teached us to do this on Windows and I don't like to work in it. I have tried even in Windows, but there I get some really crazy errors (not that I have used different method to try compiling it on Windows, method that they thought us in classes).
Thank you!

I've lost spell check in almost every application [SOLVED]
I'm not sure what just happened, but I no longer have spell checking capability in nearly anything. OpenOffice, Firefox, and LyX just to name a few. It still works in Gedit, so something is happening. I have both Aspell and Ispell installed. I have the OpenOffice spelling package installed. I didn't really change much. In fact, the only thing I changed was removed some "orphans" to find out one of them was necessary to web browsing (nss-mdns... possible bug report later). I reinstalled all of them to see if it helped.
And....
I also replaced my version of FF3 (firefox3-systemcairo) with the one in the repos, complete with the xulrunner update and such. Any connection here?
--EDIT--
OpenOffice was a fluke. It turns out that the development branch is the only one suffering from this. I could have sworn it worked, but it's working. I'm probably wrong here.
The others?

I removed my .lyx file, and spell checking is sort of working. It's not exactly what it use to be, but it's doing something. I can spell fairly well, I just like to write freely without worrying too much about stuff; That's what proof reading is for.
Thanks fwojciec. Yet another bizarre set of coincidences "resolved".

"No enought room on startup disk for Application Memory" when using the Accelerate Framework
Dear colleagues,
I am running what I know is a large problem for a scientific application (tochnog) a finite element solver that runs from the Terminal. The application tries to solve 1,320,000 simultaneous linear equations. The problem starts when I use the Accelerate Framework as the Virtual Memory size jumps from 142 G to about 576 G after the library (LAPACK) is called to solve the system. It does not do it if I use a solver that does not calls LAPACK inside Accelerate.
The machine is a mac pro desktop with 8 GB of ram, the 2.66 GHz Quad-core Intel and the standard 640 GB hard drive. The system tells me that I have 487 GB available on hard drive.
The top instruction in Terminal reads VM 129G vsize when starting. When I run the finite element application once the LAPACK library in the Accelerate framework gets called, the Virtual Memory (VM) jumps to 563 G vsize.
After a short while, I get the "No enought room on startup disk for Application Memory error"
This is a screen capture of the application attempting to solve the problem using the LAPACK library inside the Accelerate framework: Here are the numbers as reported by the activity Monitor.
Tochnog Real Memory 6.68 GB
System Memory Free: 33.8 MB, Wired 378.8 MB, Active 5.06 GB, Inactive 2.53 GB, Used 7.96 GB.
VM size 567.52 GB, Page ins 270.8 MB, Page outs 108.2 MB, Swap used 505 MB
This is a screen copy of the same application solving the same problemwithout using the Accelerate framework.
Tochnog Real Memory 1.96 GB,
System Memory Free: 4.52 MB, Wired 382.1 MB, Active 2.69 GB, Inactive 416.2 GB, Used 3.47 GB.
VM size 148.60 GB, Page ins 288.8 MB, Page outs 108.2 MB, Swap used 2.5 MB
I can not understand the disparity in the behavior for the same case. As I said before, the only difference is the use of Accelerate in the first case. Also, as you can see, I thought that 8 GB of ram memory was a lot.
Your help will be greatly appreciated
Best regards,
F LorenzoThe OP had posted this question in the iMac Intel forum.
I replied along similar lines, but suggested he repost this in the SL forum where I know there are usually several people who have a far better grasp of these issues than I.
I would be interested in getting their take on this.
Although, I think you are coming to the correct conclusion that there are not enough resources available for this process, I'm not certain that what you are saying on the way to that conclusion is correct. My understanding of VM is that it is the total theoretical demand on memory a process might make. It is not necessarily the actual or real world demand being made.
As such, this process is not actually demanding 568GB (rounded.) As evidence of that, you can see there is still memory available, albeit quite small, in the form of free memory of 33.8MB and inactive of 2.53GB (the GB for that figure, above, seems like it might be a typo, since for the process when not using Accelerate the reported figure for inactive was 416.2 GB -- surely impossible) and 7.96GB used. The process, itself, is using 6.68GB real memory.
In addition, I question whether the OP has misstated the 487GB free drive space. I think that might be the total drive capacity, not the free space.
My guess is that it is the combination of low available memory and low free drive space prompting this error.
From Dr. Smoke on VM:
it is possible that swap files could grow to the point where all free space on your disk is consumed by them. This can happen if you are very low on both RAM and free disk space.

This gets more to the actual intent of your question...
EDIT: Looks like some kind of glitch right now getting to the Dr. Smoke post.
