Uh-oh... Boot failure, out of the blue

Got nothing but a loud fan sound when I turned on my G5's power this morning. No chime, nothing.
I forced shutdown by holding the power button; then I disconnected the power cord for a minute.
Next boot was completely normal, and it has been running quietly and happily for a couple of hours. (The only thing I did differently was to turn off my external G-Drive before starting up. I seriously doubt that's relevant, but thought I should mention it.)
Should I be concerned? Did it likely just need its PMU reset for some reason (if memory serves as to what the power disconnect does)?
My one other worry about this Mac is that it seems memory-challenged lately, but that happens mostly, if not always, when I have been working on my increasingly media-intensive MySpace profile. The computer has only 1 GB of RAM.

Hi everyone,
Well, surprise surprise, it did it again, following an abrupt crash of Firefox when I clicked on a link in Google Reader--one of Google's own functions, mind you, not my RSS junk. Same deal: seemed to power on but then just fidgeted, no chime, and finally the fans would roar up and I'd have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
And this time, it really freaked out. At first it would boot if I held down the shift key, but that only seemed to work about three times. (The Apple tech who discharged it last night said it was probably just being a diva and the shift key only SEEMED to be making it boot.) I can't remember whether I ever succeeded in making it boot from the system DVD; it never would boot from the Leopard-enabled partition on my external drive, although various views clearly show this sector to be bootable. When it wouldn't do that and I didn't know how to reset the startup drive, I gave up, put it in its box, and made a quick drop to Apple.
One week later, it's back, and it's up, but we don't know what happened. Just like a car on the fritz, it booted fine at the Apple store. Many times, under duress, they tell me. Two different techs phoned me about it, and the second one spent a lot of time on the phone with me to make sure no possible culprit had gone unmentioned. All possible diagnostic routines were thoroughly implemented, I'm told, and they found nothing. Nor was there anything in the logs to indicate that the power supply had been failing. What I get from my conversation with the second guy and the guy who handled the discharge is that this was one of those things that can't be diagnosed if it's not happening. Some kind of intermittent flakiness, most likely on the part of the logic board. Both said I might have gotten out of the jam by pushing the reset button on the logic board, and the last guy showed me where it was and gave me something nonconducting to poke it with. (I forgot to ask him to explain why that remedy was different from disconnecting the power cord, which IS--they acknowledged--supposed to reset the PMU on this model.)
You gotta love Apple culture. I was treated very kindly and attentively throughout, up to and including the young man who was deployed to roll the G5 out of the store and handle the awkward and strenuous task of getting it situated (wheels and all) on the back seat of my little old two-door automobile. (Edit: And, I neglected to mention, they charged me a grand total of nothing.)
I'm reporting all this mainly in case it might help anyone else, but if anyone has any thoughts about what happened and/or how to prevent recurrence, I'm all ears. Ditto re: Leopard versions, which I'm about to go research in the discussions now. At some point during last weekend's struggle I put the machine back to 10.5, and obviously I should update that, but I have my doubts about 10.5.6 and am wondering if I should just do 10.5.5 for now. Opinions welcome (but I'm not going to sweat that decision for more than about an hour.)
Kudos to my PowerMac 7600, which got me through the week quite ably for a 1996 model with nothing more than minor RAM and storage upgrades. It is a grand old workhorse if ever there was one.

  • New BT Vision Box delivered out of the blue

I have had a brand new black BT Vision Box delivered this morning out of the blue(I currently have on of the old silver boxes). The letter indicated that they were issueing everyone with a new box due to features being rolled out and that the silver box will stop working in 28 days. I have an almost full hard drive of programs and films and there is no way of transfering the data accross. They advise us to watch everything before sending the box back in a prepaid envelope.
As I don't want anything new to be recorded on the old box can I set up my new black box and still watch the recordings on the old box?

Yes you can, but what you would need to do is -
leave the silver box plugged in to the mains and connected to the hub via the ethernet cable
then remove the ethernet cable from the silver box and connect this cable to the black box
switch the black box on and allow it to boot up
The silver box will then run and allow you to watch your recorded content
(putting the silver box in to standby is fine, but don't unplug the mains supply)

  • Im new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experincing a hard drive crash out of the blue, I lost everything. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again. I show backups for my iPhone and my daughter's iPod but my mac doesn't exist. How do I fix tho

I'm new to the iCloud and Mac in general. After experiencing a hard drive that went out of the blue, I lost everything. I wanted to use the icloud to back my documents up. I went into the iCloud under settings but it only shows my iPhone and daughter's iPod. How do I get my Mac to back up too? Is there something I need to use to have the documents back up?

You cannot back up your Mac to iCloud. Even backing the whole thing up to another online service would be dubious because it would take a very long time. You should buy an external hard disk and back up to that - even better, buy two and use one to make a Time Machine backup and the other to clone your Mac from time to time, thus giving you a backup from which you can boot in an emergency.
If you wanted to back up a suitably sized selection of data to an online service there are a number of third-party methods available, some of which are examined here:

  • Out of the BLUE no WiFi

    1st Generation Airport Extreme.
The Green light is on and I can connect to the internet via ethernet from back of device, but out of the blue none of my devices or my laptop can find my Airport Extreme from available WiFi lists.
I have done a soft reboot and a restore to factory settings and still the router doesn't show up in any WiFi list on my laptop and wireless devices.
Could the WiFi part of the Airport Extreme be bad/broken possilby?
The unit is about 3 years old now.
Thanks in advance for any help

It's possible the Airport Extreme has broken Wi-Fi. (My theory is that Extremes overheat and eventually fry their hardware. I've propped mine up on bits of wood to provide added ventilation to good effect).
It sounds like you have performed all the options on the Base Station. But be sure the problem is not at your Mac:
    - Try turning Wi-Fi OFF then ON again via either the menubar or the Network preferences.
    - Simply reboot your Mac.
    - Try a PRAM reset at boot.
    - Try one of the Wi-Fi shareware utilities to see if it can find your Base Station, despite what your Mac tells you.
    Hope that helps.

  • Out of the blue, my AppleTV went to a screen that had two icons, Computers and Settings. Why won't it go the the usual TV screen with viewing options? Help!

Out of the blue, my AppleTV went to a screen that had two icons, Computers and Settings. Why won't it go the the usual TV screen with viewing options? Help!

Here's what finally worked for me with Apple TV 3rd generation. Out of the box, when setup with wi-fi, it breezed through without any issue. As soon as I powered down and connected it to another tv (same wi-fi network), it got stuck at setting date/time. The remote would help in getting out of it, but the home would only have "Computers" and "Settings" and pretty much useless except for AirPlay. Here's what I did to resolve this:
    1. On your main router, temporarily disable the firewall or set it to the lowest setting allowable (a reboot of the router maybe required).
    2. Restart apple tv via the "restart" option in the "General" option in the main settings menu.
    3. It should breeze through and not show the "Setting date/time" screen.
    4. Once it loads up properly, turn on your fire wall as before  (a reboot of the router maybe required).
I think it worked for me out of the box, but auto-update to the latest software introduced this bug. So, everytime apple tv tries to synch with the time server, this issue will come back. To disable this, I turned off the "auto time synch" option in Settings -> General.
I am fairly confident that I'd be able to use steps 1 through 4 anytime this recurs. Possible scenarios causing recurrence of this issue:
    1. Unplugging the power to apple tv or power failures.
    2. OS updates.
    3. Restoring apple tv using "Restore" or via micro-usb and iTunes to the lastest OS.
Hope this helps. Please post if this works for you.

  • IMac is asking for admin login password upon startup when it never did before, settings are still on auto login. Why is it doing this out of the blue?

iMac is asking for admin login password upon startup when it never did before, settings are still on auto login. Why is it doing this out of the blue?

Is sounds like it might for some reason booting into Safe Mode, which does prompt for a password.
    Try a PRAM reset:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If that doesn't help, restart holding down the option key which should take you to the startup manager. Select Macintosh HD (you may need to use the arrows on the keyboard if the kb is Bluetooth), tap 'enter'. Does it boot normally now?

  • Hi, I've tried charging continuously for 72 hours. But to no avail. It just stopped working out of the blue! I had only used it for about 1 month!

Hi, I've tried charging continuously for 72 hours. But to no avail. It just stopped working out of the blue. Actually I believe I let the battery die off completely. When I tried charging it again, it never worked.
I had only used it for about 1 month.
I bought this in January at Best Buy, and still have the receipt. I was on long business trip and just got back. I can't get the 90 day customer service. How can I get this returned to Black Berry, they won't allow me to contact them without providing my credit card for incidence based service.
    Please help! Thanks.

do any LED color happen when you plug it in?
if only RED, then pug in until red goes out, wait 6 seconds and plug in again.
repeat 3 times and wait to see if 5 green flashes while plugged in
after 5 flahes, leave it plugged in for 90 minutes and it should boot up. if not hold power button down for 20 seconds and try again.
You have 1 year warranty, choose option other when calling in and not phone support. This is confusing I  know.

  • Mail icon bounces out of the blue

    Hi there.
I've noiticed the Mail icon bounces out of the blue in the dock.
I'm working with other programs or browsign the internet and Mail is calling for attention.
I open the progam, it opens properly, I close it after, and it starts to bounce again, driving me crazy.
Any ideas how to make it stop?
    Thanks!

    Reported fixes:
"I ended up repairing Permissions and resetting PRAM and that stopped the problem somehow"
"I would remove the icon from the Dock and drag the application back to the Dock to create a new one. That normally corrects it."
    Other options:
Do a Safe boot then restart normally.
    *  shutdown
    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT

  • All of my purchased ringtones and songs dissapeared out of the blue. How do I get them back without having to buy them all over again?

Out of the blue, all of my purchased ringtones and music aren't displayed anymore on my iPhone.
I went to iTunes to see if they were stored there, but the downloads folder also appears to be empty. If I try to select a ringtone I've downloaded before, a popup appears saying that I've already purchased that item and asking if I want to cancel or buy. If I click on buy, then I pay for the item again even if I already have it! The only place I can still see my purchased items is in the iTunes application on my computer, but even though I've already selected sync, the ringtones and songs still won't appear on my iPhone.
What happeneded and how can I get them back without having to pay for them all over again?
    Thank you!

I'm having the same problem on an iphone 4s running iOS8; when i updated to iOS8, all my ringtones went missing, and when i got a £50 gift card for christmas (2014), I purchased some songs from the iTunes store on my iPhone. i downloaded songs from paramore, panic! at the disco, coldplay, and imagine dragons, over wi-fi, and they went into my iphone music library; but when i re-opened the music app a few days later, in a place where i had no wi-fi, except for my 3G phone signal, some cloud icons appeared next to my newly purchased songs, telling me to re-download them from the cloud, when i haven't even deleted them. this has happened twice now, and i had to use up some of my 5GB data allowance to redownload them from the cloud. This is annoying and i need to fix this issue ASAP.

  • In iPhoto the double click to enlarge a photo is now a ! in a triangle and I am Unable to print from iPhoto. This has just happened out of the blue.

    Hi All.
In iPhoto I have lost the double click that opensup photos, the double click now appears as a ! in a triangle. At the same time I have lost the print facility in iPhoto. This happened out of the blue and I have been unable to reconcile either problem. Can anyone help please.
    Bill

The ! means that iPhoto has lost connection to the origianl file.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app.  I am certain other applications also need this information.  Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information.  Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. Thank you!
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" if I helped solve your problem.

  • PB-12 HD died out of the blue!

Has anyone had their HD die on them Out of the blue?
My laptop was working fine one minute, and when I went back to it a few minutes later, it was frozen. I tried to start it from the Power Button and it would not start again. The daisy wheel just spun and spun.
I Talked to a Apple tech and he informed me that the HD looked as if it were the problem. I took it to an Apple partner store and now have been waiting for over 2 weeks for a new HD.
The worse part was that I wanted to do a routine back up of my Home folder, but waited a day as it was my sons birthday! Now I have lost all my Notes, documents etc... Everything. Luckily there were no photos or music on the laptop, they're all on the PowerMac.
I was wondering if I was the only one who has had this happen to them?

    Hi Six,
I have never had this happen personally (knock wood), but as a service tech I have seen it happen. Hardware can fail with no warning, and there can be a number of reasons why. I am sorry that it happened so suddenly to you, but rest assured you are not alone out there. I hope your new hard drive gives you many years of reliable service!

  • Why do I get sometimes my macbook to do white noise out of the blue

Why do I get sometimes my macbook to do white noise out of the blue? It's a new mac so is it faulty?

Never heard of that problem - seems as if something may be affecting your speakers, somehow.
If you're still under warranty, you should take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them check it out. Even if you're not still under warranty, the diagnosis and estimate for repair will be free.
    Good luck,
