Uh oh...iPod completely unrecognized by my computer  (but it will charge?!)

so i just changed my computer from an old Dell to a Macbook White but unfortunately my iPod seems unable to make the switch. it never is recognized (not even as a random USB device) by my new computer and i can't get it to appear in iTunes. yet, clearly the cable and the port will work because the iPod immediately begins charging as soon as i plug it in. i'm really worried now because i tried my friend's iPod on the computer and it gets recognized but when he plugged my iPod into his it didn't come up there either! obviously the problem is with the iPod and not the computer....
i really want to keep my old iPod and have a bunch of great songs on there that i'd love to transfer onto my new computer...the old one died so if i don't figure this out i'll be starting from scratch :o(
what do i do? please help!

Try to connect it to a PC again, put it into disk mode and copy the music to an external stick or CD.
As far as I remember your ipod got formatted for PC when you first connected it to your Dell. Connecting it to your Macbook would mean to restore it for the use with a mac, which would wipe your music on the ipod. If you manage to copy to a CD or stick you can import the songs in your Macbook iTunes library and sync it back to your ipod again.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Hello CATTY101
Check out the article below to troubleshoot issues with your iPod not seen in iTunes as it may relate to a driver is installed or you may need to remove and reinstall iTunes.

  • IPod is not recognized by my computer, but it will charge

I looked through the forums but everyone seems to have trouble connecting their iPod AND charging it. I can plug mine into my iMac and it starts charging, but it does not show up as a disk or in iTunes. This is a brand new iPod (my last one iPod's HD died). The only thing I can think is that maybe it is the firewire cord, because someone said different pins are used for charging and transferring data. I've tried all the steps that Apple says, but I can't restore obviously.
    Any help out there?

General troubleshooting for unrecognized ipods in Windows is mentioned here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495
Start by checking Apple Mobile Device Service: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
Removing and reinstalling iTunes is covered here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
As mentioned in this article, reinstalling iTunes will not delete your music and apps, but backing up is always a good idea.
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. See how to back up the contents of your iTunes library in How to back up your media in iTunes.

  • My ipod wont connect to the computer but will connect to an ipod stereo

I have a 2nd generation nano that I have had for 2 years, but not used very much. It has always worked fine and still does however it wont connect to the computer at all. I have tried different ipod usb cables and different computers. It will charge and play on an ipod stereo. I would like to be able to hook it up to the computer so I can put more music on it. Has anyone had this problem before?

Update to the newest version of iTunes if that doesn't work
    Try uninstalling the drivers,
    Plug in your iPod
Right click on My Computer and click on Manage
that will bring you to the Computer Management
On the left hand side click on device manager
on the right side click on the plus sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers
it will show a list, in that list locate iPod or USB mass storage device
    right click and select uninstall
Unplug your iPod and plug it back in
Windows should automatically start installing them again
if nothing pops up then right click on Universal Serial Bus Controllers
and choose scan for hardware changes

  • 30gb ipod is undetectable by my computer but is detectable on another.

About a month ago i had a different ipod, same type. 5th gen 30 gb and i bought a charger at walmart which actually malfunctioned severely damaging the ipod so i bought another from a reseller. I just got it in the mail today, turned it on and it works fine but when i try to plug it in to the computer it identifies it as unknown. Ive tried uninstalling, reinstalling all apple related software, restoring the ipod to the factory settings or whatever theyre called, thinking it was broken i decided to try plugging it up to another computer and it worked, the other computer doesnt even have itunes and on the ipod the do not disconnect screen came up which doesnt happen on this computer although it will charge on this computer.
Ive tried multiple websites and my old ipod did work with this computer, i recently did a virus scan in the process of trying to get this to work. Any idea of why this is happening?
By the way ive heard that windows xp may identify ipods as hard drives or disk drives, i currently have 2 hard drive and im unsure if i had 2 while i had my old ipod so that may have to do with the issue but im very unsure.

you bought another ipod that it doesnt work with your pc but it works on anothers?, hmmmm, look, if you installed the 2nd hard drive on your pc after your 1st iPod malfunctioned but before your other iPod came in maybe its a drive letter conflict, since the previous iPod drivers are still installed and those drivers work with any iPod they maybe have some sort of registry that assigns the iPod with a certain drive letter, if your second hard drive took that letter maybe its a conflict, ive never had this issue before and i dunno how to solve it, but there's a topic on the help guides that has the solution to that, i'll try to find it and i'll send you the link ASAP

I upgraded my hard drive and my ipod no longer recognizes my computer.  It will not sync. What should I do?

    - First get iTunes to see the iPod:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - The transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - For non-iTunes purchased music you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - Connect the iPOd to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
