Uhhhh..... Was That Normal?

Hey All,
After downloading today's firmware update for the mid-2010 Macbook (but before it installed), my sleep light began to flicker wildly and the device gave out a loud, long beep (Not the startup sound, just a distinct electronic "BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP"). Was that supposed to happen? This is my first firmware update with the computer, so I wouldn't know.

Yes it's suppose to happen. Nothing to worry about.

High def video is about a gig a minute so that sounds about right. Video is a massive storage hog.

I see "Enrollment Settings" under device groups but it doesn't seem to do anything. Is that normal?

Hello, first time poster.
I'm new to most things apple aside from basic use of ipads and iphones. I was put in charge of the ipads for my school district and after some research and effort, I've gotten a mac server (on mavericks) up and running.
I have setup an MDM, gotten the token, gotten the VPP, etc...
Everything is working as it seems to be working. But...
In Device groups, under settings for a device group I see "Enrollment Settings" with things like "prompt user to enroll device" and "Supervise (IOS only)". So I added a device to a new group, reset the device in question and nothing. The settings appeared to do nothing. Is that normal or am I missing something?

Which version of Server.app? 3.1.2?
Verifty local DNS services. Invalid DNS causes other OS X Server components to have issues. You'll need DNS on your local network somewhere, whether that's served by OS X Server, or another DNS server doesn't matter.
Launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmless, diagnostic command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
That'll require an administrative password for the sudo, might generate a one-time message about the use of sudo, and will then display some configuration information and then an indication that no changes are required, or that there are network or DNS issues. If you're not in .local or .arpa, that'll usually give you a good view of your local network configuration.
The device has to be enrolled with Profile Manager server. How you do that depends on how you want to manage your devices. There are various overviews of how this stuff works too, if you're getting started: here is one video.

12 hours to render? is that normal?

I have a G5 dual 2.7GHZ machine with 8GB of RAM. 250GB internal drive with 140GB available space, 500GB external Lacie drive with 300GB available space. and I keep all my project files on the external drive when I work on any project.
So, I recently finished an edit that was 28 minutes, 30 seconds. it was an infomercial, so it had a lower third overlay during the entire edit, a few transitions, but mostly cuts, and a few filters on some shots, nothing too intense. I rendered the sequence which took a few hours, not sure.
then I exported to compressor for DVD, and chose the 90 minute option with one pass- faster encode. 4 hours have elapsed, and I have 8 hours to go.
is that normal?
I've been using FCP5 for the first time on a new G5 for a few months now, and all the projects that I've rendered out for DVD so far, I just exported and walked away, and usually came in the next day and it was done, so I never really monitored rendering time until now. I upgraded from a G4 500MHZ single processor using Premiere 6.5, and my render times were not nearly that long. I was thinking that with a G5 that was nearly 8 times as fast, my render time would be much shorter, only it got longer. I love FCP5 much more than Premiere, and OSX is great, but render times are just insane.
again, from the info that I provided, should my render times be that long, or am I doing something wrong?

checked my settings, and I had it set to normal.
while I had that window open, I clicked on the Render Control Tab, and noticed that under Render & Playback, all three options were checked- Filters, Frame Blending For Speed, and Motion Blur. could this be a reason? and if I unchecked say Filters, would that mean, it would render the sequence without any filters I had applied?
one other problem I have been having just this week with this particular project is that FCP seems to be running really slow. other programs run normal, so I'm pretty sure its an issue specific to FCP. for example, just now when I had the sequence settings window open, and I was click on the tabs, from video processing to render control, there was a hesitation before it would display the tab. Its like driving on flat tires or something. and at this time, I have no other program open except Safari, so its not like I"m taxing my resources. what could cause FCP to bog down?

Once your new card has been charged, the message should disappear. You will get a notification via email once the charge happens.

My Late 2011 Macbook Pro fan is running at 1999rpm. I cannot hear it unless I stick my ear to the Macbook Pro, but I only start looking around if I start to hear the fan. If I know I'm pushing the Macbook Pro with a high compute task, then I'm not worried. If it is running loud for no apparent reason, then I start to look more closing at what is running and why.

Wow, that's crazy! I'm so sorry to hear. I actually had requested
several times to have my insurance cancelled because it never covered any
of the issues I've had in the past. When I amended my plan a few months ago
they must have reactivated it. Nowhere on my digital bill was the insurance
listed so I had no idea I was even paying for it. I'd normally be livid
but, it actually worked in my favor.
I would for sure check into your legal options. For now I suggest getting a
cheap refurbished phone until you are due for an upgrade. Don't commit to
their payment plan that you will be paying well after you are qualify for
an upgrade. If I thought any of the other cell phone carriers weren't just
as bad in some way or another I would switch but, I honestly don't know
anyone who's not getting screwed in some way. This is definitely some next
level bull, though. Now I know why no one from Verizon has commented in
on this thread.

New MacBook-- smaller harddrive than expected. Is that normal?

Hey, so I just purchased my brand, slammin', spank me new Black MacBook laptop. I was totally expecting this baby to come with 1GHZ memory, dual processor, DVD/RW-CD/RW, and an 80GB harddrive. Everything was perfect... except the harddrive. When I booted up, I saw that I had 56.9 GB free space. Is that normal for a new 80GB harddrive on a black MacBook? I don't think so, but I could be wrong..

Yup. What he said. You can do a fresh install and customize it to omit certain applications and other components such as unneeded languages, printer drivers, and iLife applications. (iMovie and Garageband are major culprits)
Also bear in mind that manufacturers define 1GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Computers, being binary creatures, define 1GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Your drive is indeed an 80GB drive - it has 80,000,000,000 bytes. Divide that by 1,073,741,824 and you get 74.5. This is what your computer sees your total disk space as - 74.5 GB. Add in about 15GB for the OS and pre-installed software, and you're down to about 60GB free.

Tunabelly reports PCH die temp 100C; is that normal?

We have a brand-new Macbook Air, and the temperature monitor from Tunabelly reports that all temperatures are nice and low (well under 50C), except for the Platform Controller Hub Die, which it reports pretty much always at over 100C.
Is that normal / acceptable / worrying?
(If it matters, there's been a Time Machine backup to a wireless network drive going on for the last few days.)

Not so obvious. There is an very long thread about this here, and lots of people, including me, like to leave lid open for heat dissipation; I recommend you do too. Flash is known to cause this. It's good that fans are running high, that's their job. Temps are not out of this world bad, but I've seen plenty cooler.
Also, and this is REALLY strange: If I leave Illustrator (or other programs) open and put the computer to SLEEP, the fans will spontaneously start up (even though the computer is still asleep!!!)
I've seen this reported before. I do not know if it's a new "feature" in the new MBPs. Cars have run fans after turning off for quite some time now. You might want to try an SMC reset.
My machine recently needed a new logic board AND a new hard drive (all under warranty - my machine is an April 2011 MBP ordered directly from Apple) Was this caused by the heat??
That is impossible for anyone here to know, but it's certainly a possibility.

There's no question heat is the enemy of electronics. Unfortunately, only time will tell.

Is there a way to see a file browser on iCloud? It says my account is filled up to 5G already and I can't imagine what it moved over to there that was that big.

I'm wondering if it moved my rhapsody music to the cloud (which is pointless) so I shut off 'document' sharing in case that's the problem, but it's still saying I'm at 5G right now.
When I go to icloud.com all I see is the dumb app icons, with no clue as to what's taking up that disk space.
btw, I did not sync photos from the get-go.

Have you enabled Automatic Downloads on all of your devices? This would download all of the books to all of your devices when you download on any device - as long as you are using the same Apple ID and iTunes account on all of your devices.
Go to Settings>Store>Automatic Downloads>Books>On. When you download a book on one iDevice, it will download to all of your iDevices. This will only work for downloads moving forward from the moment that you turn the setting on. You will have to download the previously purchased books to all of your other devices.
With iCloud, you can start reading the book on one device and then pickup where you left off on another device.
