UI Issue in Column View

In column view, I often find that I need to expand the column view to read the file names. I do know the nice little trick to double click the vertical bars at the BOTTOM of the column to auto-expand the view. On a large monitor this maneuver becomes rather tedious. Is there a trick to move these bars to the TOP of the columns? If not then consider this is a UI suggestion please.

there is no way to autoexpand but you can change the default size of the columns as follows. hold the option key and resize acolumn in any finder window by dragging the divider to the right. that will resize all columns in all windows and become the default.
you can also request the autoexpand feature here

  • FINDER NOT SHOWING DIMENSIONS WIDTH OR HEIGHT....IN COLUMN VIEW OR ICONVIEW

I have noticed for the last couple of weeks that my finder no longer shows the width and Height of images or anything. Dimensions has -- on all things. I have never encountered this issue before.
I hit "show item info" It looks like it moves when I check the box in thumbnail mode, but there is nothing there.
I have google'd around and have yet to find a solution.
Would be much appreciated if someone could point me in the right direction.

These files are EPS files not image files. They have a TIF or PICT preview inside the file, I believe in the resource or data fork of the file. The file extension is EPS, and I cannot change that, just type the letters. The actual extension, the 4 digit one, that is invisible is the one that is important. In the case of EPS the actual extension is EPSF or EPSI.
Just to try the fix I changed the name and it did try to make a preview, but it came up with nothing. It was blank in column view. The OS still reads it as an EPS regardless of the change in file extension.
Anyone have some answer that involves a command line, I think that is really going to be the only thing that solves this one.

  • Creation of Column view for Multiprovider failed

    Dear Experts,
I'm facing an issue in TR import.
The TR failed with the below error message.
Creation of column view for XXXXX failed.
    XXXXX - Multiprovider
System :BW on HANA (BW 7.4 SP06)
If there's a way to resolve this error, please let me know.
    Appreciate your help.
    Br, Harish

    Hi,
Here's the workaround I have implemented for this issue.
Implemented the note 1955263 and made the below correction to the programSAP_RSADMIN_MAINTAIN.
    Object = MPRO_CS_GEN_ERROR_IGNORE
    Value = X
After the above customizations are done, TRs are imported without any issues.
For the OSS message I have raised, SAP has asked us to implement the note 2001969 to fix the issue.

  • Finder: Changing from thumbnail view to column view takes me back to the root folder.

    Hi,
I was hoping someone could help me with this as it's getting a bit tedious having to re-navigate back to the folder I was in. This problem is only occuring when I am working from an external NAS Drive.
I need to switch between thumbnail view and column view regularly, but whenever I change from thumnails to column - finder jumps back to the root folder, meaning I have to work my way back to where I was.
I can't figure out how to stop this happening! It doesn't happen when changing from column to thumbnails, only the other way round..
    Thanks for any suggestions!
    Sarah.

    Hi Barney,
Thanks for your reply Unfortunately though I already use AFP on the NAS drive and still have the problem, so it seems this is an issue with both AFP and CIFS..

  • When I select a folder in column view, finder immediately jumps to that column

is there a way to stop this behavior? When I am browsing in column view and click on a folder to see what's in it, finder immediately jumps to that column, shifting the parent column to the left. If I click and drag a file to a parent column, finder jumps to that column, puts the file in alphabetical order, and jumps to where the file is in that column list. This may be nowhere near the folder that it came from. If I am in a column with a lot of files/folders, I then can't see the folder where I took it from. The benefit of column view is being able to see all these levels at once - the jumping around takes that away and is visually very distracting. I often want to reorganize files within certain folders and this makes it difficult and is very annoying. It sometimes takes a while to retrace my steps and figure out where it came from. I think it's more of an issue on small displays - I have an 11" Macbook Air mid 2011/lion. I think this started with Snow Leopard, but I'm not sure - I would like to find a way to disable this behavior go back to the old way where the columns stay stationary and I can look/move around the way I want to. FYI I do have spring-loaded folders unchecked. Thanks for any help.

18 months later someone finally responds to you.  I dislike this behavior very much and cannot find a workaround.  The current push by Aple is to make the smaller devices more accessible which is radcially compromising the desktop experience.  I asume you have updated to Mavericks by now.  The auto-sizing columns remains an issue as well.  If this is driving you bonkers too.  Use TAG View and the auto resize to file name length returns.

  • InDesign CS6 (v.8.0): Image Import Delay in Column View

Since I've begun using InDesign CS6 I am having a small delay issue with importing an image into an image box.
    Simple steps:
    1. Draw Image box
    2. "Command D" to import the image into the box
    3. When the finder pops up - and I am in Column View solely - there is a massive delay before any of the finder items appear.
Doing the same thing in any other Finder view does NOT cause a delay.
Is anyone else having this issue?
iMac on 10.7.4.... but it's been doing it since the release of CS6...

  • Finder - column view width

Since Lion, whenever I open a new finder window - the width of all the columns in the column view is too wide
Due to this, it becomes very irritating to resize all columns every time I open finder window.
Cant I make it default option to always resize all columns individually "
I face this issue only on my Mac, other Mac's with Lion are fine.

Deleted the file "com.apple.finder.plist" from you ~/Library/Preferences & relaunched finder.
    Its fine now

  • No preview in column view

Until now I could see jpg-pictures and documents in column view in Finder, but seemingly without reason the preview column only shows the attributes but no more the preview. All three options (symbols, preview and preview column) in column view are 'on'.
In Symbol View and Cover Flow the jpg's and documents all show up as expected.
I removed the plist from the library and restarted the computer, but this didn't help.
How can I restore the view?

  • Finder still retains "only in column view" setting from Tiger...

I know they removed this preference completely in Leopard, but every time I open a new Finder window, it is always in column view. That's because I had used that option in Tiger (Always open in column view". Now since that preference is removed it's basically stuck always opening it in column view no matter what I do to change it. Any suggestions?

    thank god i'm not alone.
Leopard is loaded with bugs, a very big disappointment.
i noticed the same problems you're experiencing.
in addition, the 'Secure Empty Trash' feature hangs the system when deleting large files, causing a forced shutdown.
after restarting, the 'Secure Empty Trash' feature will sometimes complete the deletion process without hanging.
there's plenty more to talk about, and i hope apple gets on top of these issues asap

  • Planning Data from formatting issue with Smart view in 11.1.2

    Hi,
We are facing one strange issue in Smart view.
We have created a dataform in Planning as follows:
    Columns:
    FY10 FY10 FY10
    Budget Budget Budget
    Jan Feb Mar
But when we open this in Smart view, we are getting the columns as follows:
    FY10
    Budget
    Jan Feb Mar
i.e. year and scenario are spreading across months instead coming at each column level.
We are using Hyperion Planning 11.1.2, Smart View 11.1.2 and Office 2003.
    Please help us.
    Thanks,
    Naveen Suram

Are you saying you want the dimension members FY10 and Budget to be repeated in each column?
I think that can be done for Ad-Hoc Analysis mode, but not where you have opened up a Planning form.
    Cheers

  • Cannot right click in Finder column view

    Hello,
I'm having a **** of a time trying to figure out why I can no longer right click in Finder's column view. Everything else seems to be alright.
All other apps and finder view options are ok. Just when in column view, the right click functin for a file of folder is not working, but I can right click in the blank space inside a folder in Finder's column view.
So strange. Such an isolated issue.
I have tried a Disk permission repair, restart, shut down and turn on. I even deleted the "com.apple.finder.plist" file and restarted. Still won't work.
From what I can gather the issue arrised when I received a couple image files from a client via Wetransfer. I scanned the files and no infected files were found.
I have even enabled the hidden files and nothing looks out of the ordinary.
    I'm stumpped.

    Same problem from yesterday.
It is apparently caused by the Google Drive, see:

  • Possibility for automatic column width in column view

    hi there,
i would like to ask if anybody has an idea to fulfil my desire.
i work in column view in the finder of os 10 and it is not handy that i can not read some of my file names due to the column view.
is there a possibility that the columns change their width automatically? or does anyone knows a shareware to solve this problem.
i want to open a new window and all columns change themselves.
thank you very much. kind regards,
    michael

While this isn't a solution, if you double click on the column width adjustment button (under the arrows of the column you are looking at) the column will increase width to fully show the widest name in the column.
However, it would be nice to have a Preference available that would let you choose to always have columns displayed with columns at sufficient width to show full names.
I think this issue is a remnant of a small screen psychology. Large screens are now so prevalent that wide columns would not be a significant issue.

  • Desktop icon in column view and docking bar

Hi, I had an icon for the desktop on the left side of my column view since I got my machine. I got the bright idea today to move it to my dock and it went "poof!" when I tried to move it. I can't undo it and I am lost without my desktop view to rename my screen shots. Help! How do I place the desktop icon on my column view again and it is possible to put it on my dock?

  • Finder freeze in Column View

Since recent updates, Finder freezes with the spinning beach ball when selecting items in column view. It can takes a few minutes each time before I can progress.
I checked for answer here, but found nothing.
I have repaired disc errors, restarted, relaunched Finder, repaired permissions etc - but the problem is still there.
    Any ideas or solutions?

If you haven't worked this out yet, sounds like you're having the same exact issue I was, solved here:

  • Column View Preview hogs RAM

I've posted in the past about my issues with the Finder crashing/relaunching and I never did find the likely cause....until this week.
I do a heavy amount of browsing audio files on my drives using the Finder, and I finally decided to run Activity Monitor and watch how much RAM the Finder is using. It turns out that if I browse using Column View, and the file Preview is toggled on, then every sound file that I select (whether I play it using Quick Look or not) chews up RAM and does not release it when I select a new audio file. If I select a 5mb file, then approx 5mb gets added to the Finder process in Activity Monitor..and it doesn't release the RAM until the computer is rebooted or Finder is Re-launched. Over a period of a few hours depending on my project workflow for the day, I have easily had the Finder chew up 2.5gb of RAM.
If I toggle the file Preview triangle to Off, then RAM seems to stay fairly unaffected.
My best guess is that the crash/relaunches I have been having are the result of the Finder reaching some maximum ram limit.
Any suggestions on an app or script that I can easily run throughout the day to re-launch the finder before it crashes on it's own? Or, maybe there utilities out there that could provide me with an alert when certain apps are approaching a Ram usage threshold, a threshold that I could manually choose?

Just tried that Carolyn, removing the QuickLookDaemon plist to the trash, emptying the trash and re-starting.
After the re-start, I've gone into Finder and column view, and no change. I've highlighted a jpg file and pressed the space bar - QuickLook opens, but no image there either.
I also tried removing the QuickLook and Finder plist files at the same time, and restarting - no dice, alas.
The QuickLook window opens to the right size for the underlying picture, but shows no image. So it seems to know the size, but can't find the data?
