UJ-845-C on a iMac G5 17' PPC 2GHz ?

I have a iMac G5 17' PPC 2GHz.
My opical drive: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K04L, has passed away.
Can I replace it with a UJ-845-C ?
Many thanks.

Insert your original installation disk and follow the Hardware Test instructions, if possible.
Otherwise take it in for servicing.

  • Internet sharing: iMac and G4 PPC Dual Mirror Door via firewire, fire sharing works fine with this set up now need internet sharing

I have already set up file sharing thanks to a query last year, now I need to set up internet sharing, I am using a firewire connection and my ISP has confirmed that their should be not problem in internet sharing between my iMac and my G4 PPC Dual Mirror door but after trying different combinations in the sharing set up I am still drawing a blank on this connection, any help would be appreciated

You have set up file sharing by firewire, right? Now you want to share your iMac's Internet connection with the G4. Does the G4 have an Airport wireless card? If so, set it up that way in System Prefs under Internet Sharing. If the G4 doesn't have an Airport card then you'll need to do it by Ethernet, as in this article http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_share_your_wireless_internet_connectio n_ethernet. But if you do it by Ethernet then your iMac would need to be connected to your modem wirelessly, not by Ethernet, b/c you need the iMac Ethernet port for the connection to the G4. Hope this makes sense.

  • 17" iMac (1.6Ghz PPC) can use Ram with Heat Spreader?

    Hello There Apple Community,
i have a vintage 17" PPC iMac, it support 2GB of max ram., here in my country those memories are hard to find, the ones i found, there are DDR 1GB 400Mhz which is the right one, BUT they have "Heat Spreader" can i use them to upgrade my iMac?
    Cheers....

    Hello Juan Bermudez,
While it is not explicitly stated that memory with heat-sinks will not fit, I do not believe that they will. The following document provides the specific requirements that your iMac G5 has with regards to memory.
    About iMac G5 Memory
    1. iMac G5 computers work with memory modules (DIMMs) that meet all of
         these criteria: PC3200, 2.5V, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, 184-pin,
         400Mhz DDR SDRAM.
    2. There are two RAM slots. The maximum amount of RAM you can install is 2
GB. You can use RAM module sizes of 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB, in either
         slot.
    3. DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the iMac G5
computer: registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.

  • Does FaceTime works with an iMac 2006 ? (intel 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with 3GB ram ?

I have an IMac 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB ram.  I have an Apple ID that is working properly for many years.  When I want to activate FaceTime, it gives me an error of ID.  I have checked my ID in iTune and it is fine.  What should I do ?
    My OS is Lion 10.7.1.

It is sometimes very peculiar to observe the side effects of some systems settings, but this would be an odd 'fix' if it were to work. Aside from anything else, the energy saver settings impact the system only when it's running since they are integral to MacOS. It's difficult to imagine how these could affect the cold-booting of the machine - though it isn't impossible of course, in as far as changing the energy saving settings might impact on parameter RAM.
However, even if it were to actually resolve this, you would need to switch back to the prior settings to make sure it remained 'fixed', since you hardly want a Mac that limits your choice of any settings that should be available to you.
And while I think, it may actually be worth resetting PRAM as follows:
    -Shut down the computer.
-Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in the next step but one.
    -Turn on the computer.
-Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
-Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    -Release the keys.

  • Imac DV G3 (PPC) speakers suddenly distorted sound output

HI everyone, I just bought an old iMac DV running OS9, and it worked just fine for a few days then - for no reason whatsoever, the stereo speakers suddenly produce very distorted sound, even at low volume. At higher volumes you can even see the speaker cones vibrating.
When it happened, I was just installing a few things with the volume set low, and the alerts suddenly sounded very distorted and remain that way. I didn't blow the speakers by playing loud music or anything like that.
I had nothing to lose, so I reformatted/installed new system but the problem remains.
My guess is that this is an electrical/hardware problem just down to plain old age, perhaps a bad solder joint or something. It's not the end of the world but it just seems strange that it happened so abruptly I did not move or thump the computer in any way.
It's an iMac DV from 1999, given it's age I'm not expecting miracles, but just wondering if anyone else ever had a similar problem and managed to fix it without pulling the computer apart and replacing a hardware component which is way too much hassle!
Were these models' speakers ever known to suddenly crap out with no warning?? Some older macs had design flaws they became notorious for (I'm thinking of my Ti Powerbook G4 hinges, I had that once!)
Is that extra button on the side booting into open firmware of any use? Just a stab in the dark!!!!
    Any ideas/insight anyone?
    Thanks!!!

At higher volumes you can even see the speaker cones vibrating.
That is normal. If they don't move, they don't work.
However, it could be that someone else overloaded the speakers and caused them to fail. I think the first step is to see if the speakers have been damaged. Use a pair of external speakers or headphones and test the sound.
Failed speakers in G3 iMacs are not a wide probelm like the one you mentioned, or bad capacitors in eMacs. Generally, the failure mode is the passive cooling (read, "no cooling") system baking the PAV board until some part of it fails.

  • Burning cd-multiple podcasts no longer split?

With previous Itunes versions, I remember being able to burn cds with multiple podcasts on it. In such cases, if one full podcast and half of a second podcast could fit on a cd, itunes would record halfway through the show and continue the rest on the next cd.
Now it seems like, it will only copy what it can copy entirely. If only one full show can fit, then it'll push the second show to the next cd. Is there a way to change this? I'm eating through cds like crazy just to listen to podcasts.

Still not working but I have a little more information.
Rebuilding my iTunes library had no effect.
Rebuilding the preference file did have an effect:
The new preference file reset all the preferences (obviously) including where the itunes music folder is located. Forgetting to change the folder back to the external volume where all my music is kept, I tried downloading a podcast. It worked. I then tried remapping the itunes music folder to my actual music folder and it failed again, producing the same error I originally posted.
Okay, so there's an issue with my external drive. Well, perhaps, BUT, as I mentioned above, the drive appears to be working fine. I can read and write files to it, I can play music and podcasts off of it, and--here's the kicker--a different user account on the Mac, which shares the same external music volume is able to download podcasts to the drive.
So, there is a little more information, though I'm really not sure the next steps to take to troubleshoot this.

Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

  • My iMac doesn't support iTunes 7, where can I download 10.6.3?

I have an older iMac which I will be replacing in the coming months, but I need to get my hands on iTunes 10.6.3 as my iPhone running iOS6 will not connect to iTunes with it's current version (10.5.3). As far as I can tell, I can now only download iTunes 7 through the website.

Until I hear otherwise I believe if you are running iOS6 you need iTunes 10.7.  In order to run iTunes 10.7 you need OSX 10.6.8 or higher.  By all means try using iTunes 10.6.3 and if it works make sure you tell me so I can get it right (I use an older computer and no i-gadgets so I just report what I read).
    iTunes 10.6.3 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
If it doesn't work then you will need OSX 10.6.8 or higher.  That you have to buy and if your iMac is a PPC model there is no way you can run it on that computer.  It would help to be more specific about your iMac in your computer profile because there's dozens of models spanning over a decade and I have no idea which one you have.  If you have an Intel model then you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6) for the next few months until you get a newer computer.
Kappy 08/2012 post on upgrading to Snow Leopard, then Lion or Mountain Lion -  https://discussions.apple.com/message/19401628 - including how to get Snow Leopard and Lion since Apple removed them from the online store.

  • I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? The OS10.5.8 update failed. Now get blue screen and error-can't find Intel Power Manager. What now??

I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? After deleting 17G of music files to make room on the 74G drive, The iPhoto and iWeb updates seemed to load okay, but the OS 10.5.8 update failed - message opened said the computer encountered an error and must shut down. Now I get the blue screen. Startup with 'V' pressed shows multiple lines saying: error-can't find IntelCPU Power Manager. What now?? I  reset PRAM, I think.....?????

I am concerned that you might have applied a system updated intended for an Intel iMac, while you have a PPC (non-Intel) iMac. Your PPC OS should not be looking for an "IntelCPU Power Manager."
Have you tried booting from the 10.5 install DVD/CD and repairing the hard drive, plus repairing permissions?
If you done the repairs mentioned above, and your problem still persists, you can also try doing a safe boot. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 ) Then, if none of these things worked, if I were in your shoes (it's hard to diagnose these things without being there in person) I would first check that there is adequate disk space, then I would boot from the 10.5 DVD/CD install disk and reinstall the operating system. There is an option to do an archive and install preserving user files/settings, that would be the option you want, as it will save your files but install a new OS. Make sure you have a good backup of your files first. If you do not have one, use "target mode" to copy all your files before embarking on an new OS install. Assuming that you do succeed with this install, then use Software Update to get the right updates for your iMac.

  • IMac G5 - boots up to blue screen - tried everything

I have an iMac G5 (no iSight) 2GHz. Came across following problem (running MacOs 10.4.11):
    - Normal boot: Mac goes through normal start up, but never gets beyond the blue screen - i.e. just before log in.
    - Safe boot: boots up OK & can log in.
Up to this point, has been working fine for however long I have had it (maybe 3 years, I think).
I have trawled through the various sites and tried everything, including:
    - Resetting PRAM
    - Resetting SMU
    - Disk Utility - repair permissions (some problems, now fixed)
    - Disk Utility - repair disk (no problems)
    - Apple Hardware Test from install disk 1 (no problems)
    - Re-formatting disk & re-installing Mac OS from install disks (MacOs 10.4)
None of the above has fixed the problem - in normal boot it stops at blue screen, and if safe boot it gets through OK & works fine.
Next stop is the local Mac repair shop. But before I head off there, I wondered if anyone here could suggest anything.
The following link has three docs - full system profile, console log for unsuccessful boot (i.e. to blue screen) and console log for successful boot (safe mode):

    Thanks in advance

  • Having purchased a Canon PIXMA MG5300 wi-fi printer for my new iMac that has has no CD slot, how do I install the drivers?

As the title says, how do I get the two devices to cammunicate with each other?

Note the new iMac isn't PPC, it is Intel. I'm asking this thread be moved to the correct forum.  Since the issue is likely to do with the operating system drivers, I'm having this moved to the 10.8 forum.

  • Random Freeze in iMac Snow Leopard 10.6.8 non stop

Hi, I aplogize if this post is long but I really need help.
    I have a
    iMac 7.1 OSX 2Ghz intel Core 2Duo / Memory 3 GB 667 MHZ DDR2 SDRAM originally running (10.4.10.)
I installed Snow Leopard about two years ago and I never had problems, and kept making the software updates.
Although, around 10 months ago it started to freeze, no mouse moving, nothing, just froze and I had ( and still don't ) no option but to shut it down at the start up button which causes me sometimes to repair the volume.
At first it happened sporadically but then the problem increased and now it happens from around 20 minutes in 20 minutes and it doesn't matter which app I am using or even if I am just at the desktop or checking my mail. It is completely random.
*This problem does not happen when I am logged in Safe Boot.*
I tried all of this troubleshooting:
Repair Disk permissions on the disk.
    Repair Permissions from the installer.
I ran ONYX with all items on maintenance selected.
I did Erase and Install and then restored my back up from Time Machine for at least five times.
I did an Erase and Install and then brought only some files from my documents at Time Machine, no apps, but it froze the first time I was downloading "App Cleaner".
I uninstalled Dropbox, disabled Growl, updated all my apps.
I ran hardware test and all is fine.
Finally I took it to maintenance, it did no froze while at the shop, they ran tests for bad blocks and the disk is fine and the hardware too.
They cleaned it inside, checked the memories and all was fine.
Then I brought it home. Restored my full back up from Time Machine and the freeze happened immediately.
I could see at console this thread I paste below so I tried to uninstall iStat wondering if I had a bug with Lisbon/Portugal time.
This problem does not happen when I am in safe boot.
It did not happen with a spare user account but this one was empty.
I am wondering if I've a problem with cache and my current user account but I don't understand anything about this subject.
And I would like to ask if by making an Erase and Install but creating a different user account, then use the Apple bundle for updating to 10.6.8 and not doing it with software update as I usually do
and, then bring only my documents, pictures and movies with Migration Assistant instead of restoring my back up from Time Machine would solve this problem or,
there is someone who can help me and explain if I need to delete some cache files somewhere. I am quite distressed by now as it has been around one month and I can barely work on this computer.
Or how can I bring safely my files with another user account without bringing caches?
    Thanks, C.

Funny how this is a completely ignored post here, because I think you are far from the only one suffering from this. I have a 2006 2.16 GHz C2D 2GB RAM at my parents house that they use for some Word Processing, light browsing and occasional Photoshop. This computer seems to be suffering the exact same fate as you described your own. Though the nature of the issue makes me think that this could actually be a hardware issue. We have a classroom full of these models at a local university and a lot of them suffer from video card issues - basically they all detach from the motherboard after a while. It seems that it's a heat issue, but the classroom is actually fairly ventilated. Not to be paranoid or anything but the rate at which these issues occur makes me conspiratically think that this is a case of planned obsolescence. Though in any case I still would like to hear an official reply from an Apple Engineer. Tough luck for us...

  • IMovie 10.0.5 crashes on my iMac (2007, OS X 10.9.5) after 10 minutes of editing.

My iMac Mid-2007 (with 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, with 130 GB of 250 GB storage available) using OS X 10.9.5 crashes after 10 minutes of editing on iMovie 10.0.5.  The window and the wallpaper both start breaking up, everything freezes including Force Quit, so the only thing I can do is shut down manually.  After a few minutes, when I restart all is good...for 10 minutes, and it all happens again. I have also had trouble with setting the speed for all stills and with the indicator that shows a still has been used in the project. This is the first project I have attempted since updating both my operating system and iMovie. I am tempted to trash my current iMovie and install iMovie 10.0.6, but somehow I still have iDVD and don't want to lose it.

Thank you for your questions/advice. The answer for your 1st question is yes, and "may be" to your 2nd question.  Fortunately, I had exported the recently developed photos into my external head drive. After reverting back to the original catalog, I have re-imported those developed photos. Now everything is restored. I need to learn more about the subtleties in using the Lightroom.
    Thanks again,

  • Using the video out on an iMac...

Can you disable the iMac's monitor?  I have the iMac connected to my TV, but I only want to use the TV as a monitor.  It looks weird having the TV and the iMac showing the same thing, and I'd rather turn off the iMac display.

Is this for the iMac in your signature?  Because if it is, you are asking about an Intel iMac, not a PPC iMac.  The Intel iMacs have the option of extended desktop which lets you put anything you want on a second display.  Just go Apple menu -> System preferences -> Displays and uncheck Display mirroring.  This way, your iMac's display can have a wallpaper of your choice, where the attached TV can be its own thing.
