UK - 857 With BT ADSL MAX - Lines become unstable and router require FW upg

Hi,
We are starting to see a number of DSL MAX sites running 857 routers becoming unstable, constant loss of sync, re-authentications etc - sometimes up to 400 a day. We called out the Telco (BT) and they tested the line as OK and stable. After swapping the kit three times I spoke with TAC and they provided me with a newer version of the ATM Firmware (2.6.4) - This fixes the problem and stabilises the line.
My question is - Has anyone else seen this problem in the UK? Are BT rolling out a code upgrade to their DSLAMs or changing some hardware? Is this likely to affect all UK DSL MAX connections in the near future?
Andy.

Andy,
We've likewise seen issues with Cisco 870 routers on BT ADSL lines. I doubt that BT will do any upgrades to their DSLAMs as we've found them pretty unhelpful when it comes to DSL. We're currently rolling out a lot of 870s and I'm going to be upgrading firmware on all of them before deployment.
Cheers,
Neil

  • TC drive becoming unstable and noisy....is it going to fail for sure?

Hi. Last weekend I was rushing to finish some jobs. To work faster, I was working at the same time on my mac and my Windows XP laptop, both sharing files stored in TC (500 Gb 1.5 years old).
Suddenly all started to move very slowly I think it was because a file transfer from pc to Tc was aborted. Both mac and pc got stuck. I noticed it could be related to TC and restarted the TC. Both systems resumed, but since that the behavior of the TC is completely unstable, freezing my Finder (pizza cutter) several times. I restarted the TC few times.
Yesterday I was trying to check if I could access some files, and the drive started to make a very annoying noise (kind of a be-bep morse code).
    What can I do?
It seems to be physical related...could it just be a structure thing?
Do you think I should start to move everything to another drive?
Is noise an advice of the drive death?
    Thanks a lot.
    Guillermo

The amount of free space required is rather dependent on how you use the system, but I wouldn't go below where you are at present. It's easy to get lulled into a false sense of security because an SSD is so much faster than a traditional hard drive that you don't really norice the impact of leaving too little space in the same way. With a traditional HD, the system slows and gets very laggy, then as space reduces further, it begins to hang and there are copious appearances of the spinning beachball. All give you a clue that you are running into a problem and are the result of MacOS having to hunt for sufficient space, preferenbly contiguous space, on the drive for paging memory blocks. An SSD causes much less of a slowdown and rather more in the way of unpredictable, if brief, system hangs because paging is much fatser. Your iTunes playback pause could well have been one of those unpredictable system hangs caused by paging to a too-small block of free space.
Like any memory, SSDs can suffer faults, and unfortunately SMART status can be very unhelpful in accurately pinpointing reliable status, but on balance I suspect if you free off a couple more Gb, you'll find your system behaves a little better!
[ON EDIT] Also bear in mind that the symptoms of a failing hard drive and faulty SSD are likely to be very different. A failing HD will result in the system hunting for data, which creates pauses and can be heard as repetitive drive cycling. An SSD won't hunt because there's no head to cycle, instead it will be far more likely to just crash.

  • After upgrading to Windows 8.1 my screen becomes unstable and nothing really works.

I am "fortunate" that Windows upgrades itself automatically (I forgot to remove this feature) and when it does nothing works propeprly: teh screen blinks every now and then, the cursor doens't stop whiling...meaning its doing something (I can't figure out what!).
HOw do I do this darn upgrade without a hassle?
    Thank you.

  • I am running xp and the last time I tried to upgrade to Firefox 5 it caused my computer to slow down become unstable and eventually my hard drive crashed.

However I do believe the hard drive had other issues that just might have been further compromised by downloading 5. Talked to a couple of others who have also had bad problems after downloading 5 and that is what really concerns me is that my problem is not isolated. I have just got my computer back up and running and am very concerned about continuing with the 5 upgrade that was automatically downloaded and will be installed the next time I start up. How do I prevent the download from installing upon start up next time until I can get some clearer info on why 5 is causing some problems and can avoid them?

My mother just had this problem. After uninstalling a bunch of search malware, i was still seeing the bing tab come up on start up. The way I fixed this is to delete any shortcuts, remove it from the task bar and the start menu list. It appears this crappy malware modified the firefox and chrome(if installed) shortcuts to open bing.
Of course another way is to modify the shortcuts to remove the link that they added. It was easier for me to remove and just re-pin.
Hopefully that solves your problem too.

  • Max. number of interface and route for a vrf

    Hi all,
for a single vrf how many interface and how many routes can i have?
Does a limit exist? Or it dipends only by the memory capacity of the router?
    Thanks in advance
    Gianluca

    Hi,
there is only the memory and the CPU load of the PE limiting those values.

  • I'm having problems with the bookmarks, which are very unstable and almost impossible to use.

When I try to use my bookmarks and run the cursor to try to get to a folder, such as Travel, many times it just opens the one above instead. Also, when I can finally get this to open, it's very difficult to get to take the cursor across and reach the bookmark I need. It has gotten so bad that I spend a lot of wasted time.

  • Formating Line thickness for lines in graphs with more than 6 lines.

I have a line graph with more than 6 lines on it and I'm trying to make them all 1px.
I can specify a line thickness for the first 6 lines but after that, the lines go back to the default thickness.
Is it possible to change the default line thickness for a graph or format the line thickness for the 7th line and more?

Good news! I found out how to format more than 6 lines of data and it's really simple to do!
In the bottom left hand corner of the Format Chart Data, next to the Clear All button, is a button marked ADD.
If you click this button, another row is added allowing you to format the 7th line of data.
Click again and you get a row for the 8th line and keep clicking to add more lines.
I'm making a note of it here in case it is useful to someone out there who searches on this problem in the future.

Try again with Vista 32bit, 64bit is highly unstable and only a few have it running stable.
I've been running Vista x64 for the past nine months, and now with my K9A2 P--and have had no problems.  I mean, none.  Have not had any occasion to even consider reinstalling Vista x32. Vista x64 has been stable as a rock for me consistently since I installed it.  Would not consider going back to XP under any circumstances.
There is a problem with Beard0's system that I would say boils down to device drivers or faulty hardware or some combination thereof.  His experience is dramatically different from my own, and the problems he's having are not indicative of my experience with Vista, whether x86 or x64.

  • Lines over images and around text in Captivate SWF file

My project works & views fine in captivate and when published, it views fine on my mac - through flash player and browsers. But when I send a swf file to the client to view they see odd lines above and below images.
But they dont see the lines when they view the htm file within a browser - then it views fine.
The lines only appear when there's text over an image.
    Screen shots attached.
My captivate project was created by importing a Powerpoint document, with images and text on each slide.
I've changed the optimisation / slide quality through prefrences and on each slide to the highest quality.
I've also un-selected the advanced slide compression.
Is there another thing I can try to iron out these lines?
Some of the images within Powerpoint are stretched, would this cause the lines?
Is it a flash player issue?
    Or a zooming issue?
    Any help is much appreciated!

    Thanks Lilybiri,
I am a new user & just finding my way
I understand how to publish and how Captivate creates a zipped file with a SWF, HTML, JS and CSS files etc. (Im using Captivate 7).
How do you send Captivate projects to clients for review / approval before you supply them with the whole project zipped file?
So far I've been sending them the swf file to check. And have had troubles with them viewing the lines over images and around text. Even though I cant see the lines.
I need the client to see what I'm seeing - a project without any lines.

  • At my wits end with BT Support regarding line spee...

I've had Infinity for about a month now. Installation went smoothly, my ping is great but I'm only getting 15mbit down and 5mbit up. I was getting 10mbit out of a possible 20mbit with my previous provider(Sky). My logic tells me that given I was seeing 50% of the possible max from Sky, I should be seeing at least 20mbit from Infinity.
Having spoken to BT about the issue, I was assured I should be seeing 25-30mbit and there is an issue with the line which needs investigating.
I've now had 4 engineer visits cancelled. 3 I'm told were cancelled "automatically" and the fourth was cancelled as my line is "operating within acceptable limits". After two failed visits I managed to get my case transferred to the UK teams after sending a mail to Ian Livingstone (BT Cheif Exec), however they do not seem to be getting anywhere with open reach.
For the first 3 cancelled visits I was only informed after calling BT myself. The fourth visit(booked for 8am-1pm today) was cancelled last night at 8.30pm and I was informed this morning at 9.30 by a guy from the UK.
I'm not sure what else I can do other than cancel the service. I've wasted nearly 24hrs of my time sitting on hold and sitting at home waiting for an engineer.
From my point of view I'm paying 3 times more than what I was with Sky for a 50% uplift in speed while I'm being told by BT that my line should be 60% faster than it is.
Can anyone explain to me how the line speed is set? I know with  ADSL that Sky could adjust my line speed up at their end until the line became unstable, the sweet spot with ADSL was 10mbit. Does it not work the same with VDSL?
    Thanks

  • Seeking Diagnosis: ADSL Max: Automatic Reset of Hu...

I’m hoping that the forum can suggest a diagnosis for an intermittent problem with my BT broadband link. I’ve been told in the past that my link uses ADSL Max. The problem has occurred before, though not for a couple of months, and not since an NTE5 and service-specific face plate were installed. I previously posted about this under the title “BT Hub3 - What Exactly Does 'Connection time' Mean?”.
The problem is that the Hub (specifically a Hub 3) performed an automatic reset (after the connection had been stable for almost 25 days), and on completion of the reset the upstream bit rate had fallen to a mere 160 kbit/s. The downstream bit rate had also fallen, but only slightly, and its value remained perfectly acceptable given the length of my phone line.
I’ve pasted below some statistics that I took from the hub manager, together with the date and time of their retrieval. Clearly the problem is correlated with, and probably caused by, a decline in the Noise Margin Up figure from 21.0 dB to 5.0 dB, and I’m interested in knowing whether this is symptomatic of a fault in BT’s network, or of any other obvious cause. I was actually talking on my phone line when the reset occurred, and I was alerted to it by crackling on the line.
Having identified the reduction in upstream bit rate I recovered the situation by unplugging the broadband cable and then plugging it in again a few moments later. I suspect that had I not done this the upstream bit rate would still be far too low. It is reasonable to expect that a low upstream bit rate would be corrected automatically, but my past experience is that this does not happen, and I’d be interested in knowing whether dynamic line management focuses exclusively on the downstream bit rate.
    Thanks in anticipation.

  • Activated on ADSL Max not ADSL 2 / 2+

    Hi,
As experienced by other user on this forum I appear to have been activated on ADSL Max rather than ADSL 2/2+.
Would it be possible to move me across?
On my previous supplier I had a solid ~10500\800Kbps ADSL 2 connection, I now seem limited to 8096\448Kbps. The limited upload is the real issue for me.
    Cheers & thanks in advance,

    Hi Guys,
Line was moved over to ADSL2 yesterday and speeds are good. However, whenever i use the phone the adsl drops. There is also random intermittant noise on the line. Is this due to a line fault? I've tried all the usual swapping router\filters\phone & using the test socket with the same result.
    Cheers,
    Mark

  • Moved house and placed back on ADSL Max. Help plea...

Hi, wondered if I could get some help on this issue please.
I have recently moved home and took the same number with us to the new address (connected to the same exchange). Phone service activated fine with the broadband activating 1 day later. At the previous address I was on ADSL2+ with a fairly decent connection (6800kbps download and 950kbps upload with 50dB attenuation).
Now the broadband has activated at the new address I am currently connected at 5408/448kbps. Stats are as follows:
    Upstream
    448
    Downstream
    5408
    SNR Margin(Upstream)
    17.0
    SNR Margin(Downstream)
    6.0
    Line Attenuation(Upstream)
    29.5
    Line Attenuation(Downstream)
    48.0
Not particularly concerned about the downstream speed at this point (although I'm hoping after the 10 day training period to see some increase as I've lost over 1 meg despite moving just around the corner). The problem is the upload at 448kbps. Given the high upstream SNR margin it would appear that I've been moved from ADSL2+ to ADSL Max. The router also seems to confirm this:
    Operational Mode
    G.DMT
I am assuming this is some sort of mistake as the move should have been for a like-for-like service. Is there any way I can get put back onto ADSL2+ in order to benefit from the increased upload speed? BT Infinity was supposed to go live at the end of September and still waiting so really want to maximise the most out of the current connection.
    Thanks,
    Tom
