UK E71 not finding GPS in US

I brought my E71 with me from the UK, expecting the maps application to work even if i wasn't connected to my phone network.
I connected the E71 to my laptop with the USB cable and downloaded the US maps from OVI, although i principally want to use the nokia to get GPS co-ordinates into Google Maps or ViaMichelin so that i can navigate.
But when i switch on the E71 and start the Maps application, it displays my last UK position and makes no attempt to search for GPS signals...
shouldn't the E71 maps app and GPS work in other countries?  If it should, then how do I get it to work?
Any help would be appreciated as I am begining a long US drive in a few days

Go somewhere where you have good access to clear skies (no tall buildings, etc), turn on Maps and wait...
...and wait...
It could take a while to get an initial fix when you move from one part of the globe to the other. In some extreme cases you might have to wait for half an hour (though the US should have pretty good satellite coverage, so it should only be five or ten minutes).
Once you get an initial fix, the next time you open Maps it will find your location quicker.
The reason for all this is that Maps remembers your last location and then uses that as the starting point for gather GPS satellite data. When you move a significant distance - like from the UK to the USA - then the satellite data that is cached is all wrong. This means that the program goes on a wild goose chase looking for particular satellite signals that it "thinks" it should be able to see. When it eventually figures out that it can't see those satellites, it goes looking for others.
End result is that when you haven't move too far between uses of your GPS, you get a reasonably quick satellite lock. But if you move to the other side of the world, it'll take a lot longer than it should.
So be patient and see how you go.

  • LR 1.4.1 not reading GPS metadata

    I recently geotagged a number of files (Nikon NEF) that I had previously imported into LR. I know I should have geotagged first, but oh well. Anyway, I tagged the photos in a separate directory (made a "working" directory for the tagging in case something went wrong) then copied the files back to the original directory, overwriting the untagged versions. I opened LR and did a "Synchronize folders" choosing only to sync metadata. In Library view, with the metadata pane set to "all" I still do not see GPS info. Any thoughts? This is my first try at geotagging, so I could easily have done something wrong.
    Update: I did a test image (to which I had not made any changes) and chose "Read metadata from file" instead. The GPS info appeared. Of course, this poses a problem since that action on a larger scale will overwrite keywording, etc on the files. Definitely not an option.

    OK Carl that makes more sense. The first question is did you update the images metadata from within LR before geotagging it outside of LR? If you do this then any geotagging you add to the file will only add to the metadata not delete any. It sounds very much as though you didn't update the file from within LR first. Now, having said that I'm not entirely sure how much is saved in the database and how much is saved in the metadata itself - I have a sneaky suspicion not everything and perhaps a quick visit to the FAQ's might help here or someone else will jump in.
    A little OT I know but seeing as how you mentioned it. I am not a big fan of geotagging tracks from my unit (Garmin 60CSx) as I find the accuracy is dependent upon several variables e.g. how often the unit records a point and are the unit and cameras clocks exactly in sync. My preferred method is to set a Waypoint changing the default name to that of the image number. Back on the puter it's simply a case of marrying up the image number and the Waypoint number which is dead easy with my preferred geotagging application - RoboGeo.

  • Note 4 GPS

    Only had phone for 3 weeks and yesterday is first time I tried to use Google maps to navigate.  I had strong signal but phone kept telling me GPS signal lost.   Navigation may work for a few minutes then quit, or may not find Me at all.
    I have done restarts, pulled sim card, even done a factory reset. Nothing helps. Ran phone in safemode. nothing fixed the problem. Cannot take phone back to store because I am a few days past the 14 day return. If Verizon sends me another phone it will be a refurbished one.my phone is only 3 weeks old.
    Here is another .strange thing. My wife has an LG G2 and it is a year and a half old. The only thing these 2 phones have in Common is lollipop.
    I am wondering if Verizon is aware of this problem and if there are any updates coming soon.
    Please help.

  • I did not find any difference from my iPad 2 and iPad 3?

    I did not find any difference from my iPad 2 and my iPad 3, I am wondering did they sell me the same iPad

    Look at the model number on the back of the box and enter that number into a Google search. That will tell you wich model you have.
    The new iPad comes in a box that simply says iPad on it so you can probably rest assured that you did receive the new iPad, but do the Google search if it makes you feel better.

  • Ipad not finding my location, all location setting are on?

    Ipad not finding my location, all location setting are on?

    If you have the WiFi-only iPad your location is determined by the location of nearby WiFi routers. The WiFi-only iPad does not have GPS. Without GPS location-finding is done by using a Apple location database which contains the MAC addresses of routers and their physical location. A MAC address is a unique number which is built-in to all network devices when manufactured. The Apple database is built and updated by Apple GPS-enabled devices (primarily iPhones) actually seeing your router and then adding/updating the router's location in the database.
    Bottom line: Your Router's location is set as the location of your home in the Apple location database. Therefore, no matter where you go, if the router location services sees is your router, it will report your location as your home.

    Do you have a wifi signal?  In order for the wifi only iPad to get any location fix, it needs to be connected to a wifi node - it's only way to determine locations is by looking up the wifi networks hardware address in Apple's wifi node location database of approximate locations (as mentioned already, it has no GPS chipset to use GPS location data).

    @alexMoscow
    It should only be obtaining the very first postional fix that might take time, although if inside building WiFi/Network GPS positioning method should very quickly grab position from previously determined router access point location.

    Hi,
    Both AirPrint and the HP AIO Remote app relies on Multicasting, a such have to be supported and enabled by your router.
    Some routers support a such by default, some require settings changes and some do not support Multicasting which required for a such.
    Please clarify your router brand and model to better understand any possible steps to try.

  • Error when deleting file: Could not find this item. This is no longer located in ...

    We are setting up a new Windows 2012 server. Users access this server using a 'terminal services'. We have mapped some folders from a legacy server (different domain). Using group policy preferences, we map this folder as a drive for a user.
    When user wants to delete some files, he get's the error: 'Could not find this item ..' The error is displayed to the user and it looks like the file can't be deleted. But when I press the F5 (refresh) button, the file is gone. My problem is very similar
    to a problem in the following post: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/042e747a-0e25-4190-b0a2-82f3e9635eb0/can-not-delete-file-error-is-could-not-find-this-item?forum=w7itprogeneral

    Does somebody have an idea, how can I fix the cause of this problem? (I can't tell to users to hit the F5 button everytime when they face this issue)

    Hi,
    Please check if the problematic files’ filename ended with a dot. If so, you could refer to the article below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Help:Can not find the file in jar!

    Hello everyone:
    I build a project using Netbeans 5.0 and make a jar file with it...
    The code in the project as follows will throw an exception described that it can not find the file named datasource-config.xml
    String dataFilePath = getClass().getResource(dataFile).getPath();
    //System.out.println("filepath:"+dataFilePath);
    InputStream input = new FileInputStream(dataFilePath);
    when I run the project with the main() function as an entry it works perfectly and output:
    filepath:/C:/projects/java_project/search/build/classes/com/cn/wxjt/lucene/config/datasource-config.xml
    But when I compressed the project with jar and run it , it will show:
    filepath:file:/C:/projects/java_project/search/dist/search.jar!/com/cn/wxjt/lucene/config/datasource-config.xml
    there is a (!) between search.jar and /com/cn/wxjt...
    I dont know why I generate a ! symbol in the file path... Is it cause the exception->
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: file:\C:\projects\java_project\search\dist\search.jar!\com\cn\wxjt\lucene\config\datasource-config.xml
    If you have any idea, plz tell me.
