UK format of Snow Leopard

Would anyone know what format Snow Leopard will be in when it arrives here in the UK ... that is, will it be as a disc, a purchased download from Apple or both?
And will the fact that I have not yet updated my Mac to 10.5.7 matter?
I was assuming that Snow Leopard would include all the previous Leopard updates rather than simply add to them ... but someone wiser than I told me not to assume anything in such circumstances.

  • Want to upgrade from snow leopard to lion, need to purchase an external harddrive to b/u my stuff.  will formating for snow leopard be ok when uploading to the new system (lion)?

oh sorry, I thought that was where we put the question   I am on an extremely tight budget, but since I do shift work, I wanted to use the iCloud funciton to keep my calendars uptodate on my pc/mac mini/and iphone. Wish there were a way to do it for free on my snow and snow leopard OS, but sinc e I cannot, I am wondering about formatting the external harddrive (which I have to purchase). If I format for the snow leopard, will there be a problem re installing the information into the new snow leopard OS machine?  Also, I am wondering about the older Mac Pro I have that is the OS before snow leopard (Snow, I believe) will I be able to use this same HD for backing it up to upgrade it (at a later date)?
    Thank you for your help.
    Deb

so sorry, I mean uploading information from the back up (ex HD) onto the new Snow Lion OS.  (and later doing the same with the Mac Pro which is the system before snow leopard.)  TY

  • Cruzer 2GB formatted on Snow Leopard won't mount on Windows XP/SP3

    Hi.
I needed a flash drive yesterday. I found this 2GB stick for $10 at Walmart, brought it home, formatted it in disk utility as a FAT-32 using erase option without zeroing. I tried to transfer files to a friend in Windows XP as soon as I had completed the copy by drag-n-drop. When we tried to plug into any USB2.0 port on any one of his 4 windows boxes, the drive was not recognized by any of the flavors: XP/2000. However, I could again mount the drive as FAT-32 on my Mac. Is this a known issue?
My configuration is: Mac Book Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 10.6.2 (10C540). The flash drive is model SDCZ6-2048RB BE0908NOTB. I chatted with Sandisk's tech and he verified the procedure I used was correct. He was not aware of any issue. My guess is that this is simply not a tested match-up with this drive in 10.6.2. I have had no other USB/windows issues on Leopard, however.
    -Paul

In Disk Utility, under the partition tab, click options, and select Master Boot Record, then make sure FAT32 is selected and click apply Snow Leopard defaults to GUID Partition Table, whereas the previous versions of OS X left the partition map scheme unchanged when formatting. I don't know if apple knows of this issue.

  • ?Will all appear similar format from snow leopard to Mavericks?

Will mail apps like gmail format be the same for mavericks as it was for snow leopard ?

    Carolyn,
Thank you for the answer.  Um, I am not sure what it said  . . . However, I did do more checking on exactly which model I have.  On the chart, the Model Identifier MacBookPro5,3 was listed, but not 5,4.
This is what hardware I have:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 3 MB
      Memory: 4 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
      SMC Version (system): 1.49f2
How do I tell what will and won't work well with Mavericks?  I don't know if 1) I should upgrade, and 2) what should I upgrade to, based on the information you listed in your tips.
Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Format with snow leopard install disk gets stuck at apple logo

Hi, I have a MacBook pro 17" which I want to format but have no install disks however I gt the mac os x snow leopard 10.6.3 disk from pc world today. I have been trying to format with that disk but every time it gets stuck at the apple logo, my current version is 10.6.6. Any help would be great

Does your machine meet [Snow Leopard system requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html]? What system was on it before, and why are you choosing to reinstall?
Does the disk you have obtained have a picture of a snow leopard on it, or is it gray? The latter will not work.
What model MBP? If it's very recent, the current retail SL disk may not work... only the disk that shipped with your machine will. Call Apple for replacements for a small fee.

  • Mail data from OS X Lion to revert to format for Snow Leopard

I have to remove Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard on my 2009 MBA. I recall that mail was re-configured when I had upgraded to Lion previously. So, how can I reconfigure mail to work with Snow Leopard again?

IIRC, you needed to export it when in Lion, then import it when in SL. If you failed to do that, you'll have to wait for a Mail maven to pop in.

  • SMB network fonts are showing unix format in snow leopard

  • Mac Pro not Detecting Bootable USB Drive to Install Snow Leopard 10.6

    Hi
I have to Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 GHz Intel Xeon. I have been running Leopard on them. I wish to install snow leopard, so i took out my USB HDD where I have made a Bootable Partition with snow leopard. I have used this in the past on all my machines to install snow leopard. Now when I try to install Snow Leopard from this on my mac pro, it does not detect in the "Option Boot" start up menu, it only shows my leopard disk. If I got to start up disk in system preference, then it shows my Snow Leopard disk, but when i select that as start up, it still boots to my Leopard..
Since I am doing a fresh Install , I have another HDD installed, formatted for snow leopard. When I launch snow leopard installer from Leopard and select install in the new drive, it does some installation , but when restarting  it goes to my leopard again.
This is the case on both the Mac Pro;s, but not on my laptops, I tried on my air and my macbook pro, and my friends mac book pro, it instantly boots up to the usb drive with snow leopard.
So is there anything im missing ? Or is there something wrong with my Mac Pro's?
I dont have the snow leopard DVD, else I would have tried that too..
    Please advice asap!!
    Thanks
    Sa1

    Hey
    Thanks for the reply!
I have two USB HDD, with the copy from snow leopard dvd, and both are formatted in GUID, they work fine on my laptops and even the old mac mini, just not working on two identical Mac Pros.. Its very strange, as it keeps booting to leopard, and if I remove leopard Disk, and just put the new one and connect the USB dive, its shows a folder with a "?" mark sign!
And the USB just works fine after its booted to leopard, it even starts installing snow leopard to the disk i assign, but it does not complete the installation as it boots to main leopard drive..
I have tried to reset PRAM on both machine, I have changed usb slot..
I dont know what to do!

  • Win 7 Pro (via Parallels 6), Snow Leopard, and a USB thumb drive

This is probably a simple fix...
When I plug in a thumb drive, Snow Leopard recognizes it.  When I tell Parallels to "share" the same thumb drive, Win 7 Pro installs the driver and it recognizes the thumb drive under "Devices."  But Win 7 Pro does not "see" the thumb drive under "My Computer."
Is this an issue with Win 7 Pro not recognizing the thumb drive since the drive was formatted under Snow Leopard?

Check to see what format your thumb drive was formatted as...most of the time the format is MS-DOS (FAT32) when purchasing the majority of thumb drive storage...I want to assume at some point you reformatted your thumb drive as Mac OS Extended.
    1. Mount thumb drive onto your mac...hilight your thumb drive and choose COMMAND-I.
    2. Check the Format field: (type of format).
If your thumb drive ends up being Mac OS Extended...backup all your files onto your desktop, lauch Disk Utility, Choose your thumb drive and format as MS-DOS (FAT). Copy files back to your thumb drive.
You now have yourself a dual format thumb drive that should mount without issue on any mixed Mac/PC/Parallels enviroment.

  • Sync Mail - Snow Leopard to Leopard

I have a PowerMac G5 as my main machine and a MBP for when I'm away. When both were using Leopard, I used to sync POP email (~/Library/Mail) from PM to MBP, work while away then sync back from MBP to PM when I got home.
I've just upgraded the MBP to Snow Leopard and on running Mail as a test it updated the existing out-of-date mailboxes. When I next go away, if I sync from PM to MBP, I assume Mail (v4) will update the mailboxes but when I sync back, will Mail (v3.6) on the PM be able to read them? i.e. is this updating a change of format?

My last sync was about two weeks ago so the mail on the MBP is two weeks old (i.e. no mail received by MBP since then).
I have just moved the entire mail folder ~/Library/Mail of the PM containing mail that's right up-to-date onto my desktop for safety then copied the corresponding folder from the MBP in its place. This folder has of course been updated to the new format by Snow Leopard. I then opened Mail on the PM and all seems to be well - the messages are all there.
I have not done any further testing but it seems that whatever Mail v4 does to "update" the files does not stop Mail v3.6 handling them.
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable is in a position to experiment further.

  • Snow leopard to lion external time machine backup

I am starting app programming and I need to download Xcode but my operating system which is OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard) isn't compatible with it. OS X 10.7.4 (Lion) or higher is required to download Xcode 4 so I obviously want to upgrade to that. I have an external hard drive connected to time machine and I was wondering if it will be compatible with lion since it's currently formatted to snow leopard. if it will be harmed by just plain old updating my Mac, what can I do to keep it safe? thanks!

Your Time Machine drive is not formatted to a version of OS X. If it works with Snow Leopard then it works with Lion and Mountain Lion. Updating won't affect it. In fact, just disconnect it from your computer before you upgrade.
If your computer can run Mountain Lion, then upgrade to it. Only bother with Lion if your model cannot run Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • Going back to leopard from snow leopard Can I restore from Time machine

My Imac continues to lock up about three times a day since I went to Snow Leopard.
I want to go back to Leopard where I did not have these problems.
Can I reformat and do a clean install and then restore everything from time machine even though the back up is from Snow Leopard?

You can restore the system to any previous dated state shown in your Time Machine backups. However, this will not preserve anything you created after that date. You can also restore individual files & folders from later backups but you may or may not be able to use files you created using Snow Leopard while running Leopard, depending on the parent application & if it was updated to use a new file format with Snow Leopard.
It is generally much better to resolve the issues you have with Snow Leopard & continue using it than to try to do this. Most issues are fairly easy to resolve. If you want help with that, let us know.

  • Is there anyway to read information that was saved in Snow Leopard after upgrading to Lion?

I switched to a new Mac notebook that is running Lion, my older Macbook was running Snow Leopard, now the new laptop won't read the external hard drive I had used to back things up on my old machine. I don't want to delete everything I have on the drive to be able to use it with Leopard, are there any other options?

Lion can read and write to the same formats as Snow Leopard could, which begs a question or two ...
How is the external drive formatted? do you also use it with a Windows machine, can you open Disk Utility and tell me how it is formatted?

    Help!
    Thanks, Mark

Unfortunately, the error message gives no details about what codec might be missing or what it needs.
If the file can't be opened in QT, it only means you cannot use the QT "Inspector" window to check what compression formats were used to create the file. It does not mean you can't use the Finder "Information" window to check on the compression formats or use a third party media information window (e.g., like VLC which will open many compression formats not supported natively by QT) to determine what kind of data is included in the MOV wrapper. If the file cannot be opened in any app, it is usually a good sign that the file itself is corrupted.
It's a stupid error message. Apple should do better than that.
Error trapping is quite extensive but there are still many areas which require human oversight. The message is telling you that either the container has a problem (e.g., not properly terminated, non-standard, or corrupted) or that one or more of the compression formats used is not supported by your current codec component configuration or that the data was encoded using non-standard settings or preferences not supported by QT or that the fourCC code does not match the data contained in the file or that there are timecode inconsistencies, etc., etc., etc. In short there are a near infinite number of possible problems for which it would be very difficult/nearly impossible to program error trapping depending on your sourcing of content and how you process it before it reaches the player app. Think of it like trying to play a BD disc in an DVD player.
I'll call Apple support when I get a chance.
Chances are good that they will end up sending you back here. In any case, it is often a good idea to post a sample file for examination by other QT users. At the very least, they should be able to tell you if the sample file will play on other systems which would indicate whether or not the file itself is bad and under the best of circumstances whould allow them to examing the file in detail for various common problems.

  • I have created a movie in 16:9 format. I have created an iDVD pane in 16:9 but when I preview the movie that pane changes to 4:3 and burns the DVD as a 4:3 movie. How can I stop that, please I am in Snow Leopard, using FCE4.0.1?

I am using Snow Leopard and have created a movie in 16:9 format (SD not HDV) I created a movie which stays in the 16:9 format in fcp file, .mov fiule and MP4 file. I created an iDVD pane in 16:9 but when I play the movie in the iDVD preview window the iDVD pane switches to 4:3 and it burns the DVD in 4:3. How can I stop this so I get a16:9 DVD. Thanks for any help offered

    Hi
As I see this I see two parts
    • Howto go from FinalCut to iDVD
    • Howto set iDVD right
In FinalCut Express (to 4) or Pro (to 6 - most probably 7 too)
    • One has to set Anamorphic in the Browser window - menu columns
    • Export as QuickTime movie .mov - NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION
In iDVD there are TWO places to set - WideScreen
    - Start a NEW iDVD project - AND HERE SELECT WideScreen 16:9
    - in Project - select Projectinfo
    - now set WideScreen 16:9 - Here too
This use to work for me.
    FOR FinalCut Pro-X - I have not a Clue - as I don't use it. SORRY
BTW - There is a good practice to before BURNING the DVD do
    • Save as a DiskImage
    • Test this by using DVD-Player tool
And if it is OK Size and All - then burn it by using
    • Disk Util tool
    • here set down burn speed to x4 or less (less burn errors = plays on more devices and better)
    • Not using Memorex or NoName etc cheap media - as they usually DO NOT WORK as Video-DVDs
    • I use Verbatim DVD-R as they play on more and even older DVD-players
