UK iMac Keyboard . . . . Hash Key?

Morning folks.
If from the title you havent realised, Im from the UK.
A little over a year ago I purchased a 12inch ibook g4 and im loving it. now its time for me to turn my PC into a door stop (no really!). I waste far to much time on windows playing games I cant play on a mac.
How ever when I ordered my iBook impretty sure I selected a UK keyboard and when I got it it didnt have a Hash key (#). This is kind of a tricky objective to over come when your a web designer and programmer. How ever I manage, some how.
Can anyone confirm for me if a Ukmac with this option: "Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X" comes with a hash key.
Many thanks
Adam

Hi Adam,
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The UK layout has the £ sign where the US has #.
To get the # with your UK layout, type option+3.
To get the £ with a US layout, type option+3.
If you ordered a UK iBook, as opposed to an International iBook, then you rightly got the £ model.
Tip:
In System Preferences > International > Input Menu,
you can enable any layout that you would wish to use. Enable the input menu in the menubar too, and the keyboard viewer/character palette, a very handy small flag to have in your status bar.
Enjoy your Mac!

  • Aluminium wireless iMac keyboard FN key

When up and down arrow keys are pressed together - it locks my FN key in place. It's constantly on and thus the backspace key and arrow keys are not working (becoming delete and home, page up, page down, end).
After restarting everything returns back tgo normal. And yes, i do happen to press up and down arrow keys together at some times, so the problem arises anew after the restart.
What is causing this? How can I fix this?

Tried the keyboard with some other computers. The same problem persists. Using the "Show Keyboard Viewer" it is very clear that my Fn key is being pressed without me touching it.
As I said before, restarting restores the default functionality to my keyboard with no errors whatsoever (yet I can't press up and down arrows together, 'cause that triggers the perma-pressed Fn key state).
Anyhow, checked the shortucts. Nothing out of the ordinary. Restored the keyboard shortcut settings to the default settings just to be sure. That didn't solve the problem either.
Then i simply brought the keyboard to apple service and after a quick check-up they told me that water had gotten inside and had fried the circuit, so ..well..that explains everything. A faulty keyboard due to somebody using my iMac and spilling water over my keyboard.
Oh well - bought a new keyboard. All is well. Problem resolved! Thanks.

  • Wireless Keyboard Hash key issue.

Hi. I have a bit of a problem with my brand new (UK version) wireless keyboard: I can't type the "hash" symbol that ought to come up with alt-3 (option-3). When I pull up the keyboard viewer and hold down alt, the "3" does indeed change to the hash symbol, but when I then hit "3" nothing appears. This is true in any application: Firefox, Safari, Word, Mail, even the Dashboard StickyNotes.
Can anyone think of a reason that my ability to type the hash might somehow have been switched off? All my software is up to date via Software Update. I'm puzzled and would be grateful for any advice.
(It's making life on Twitter pretty tedious...)

The "Use all F1 etc keys as standard function keys" tab isn't selected. It says "when this option is selected, press the Fn key to use the specal features printed on each key". Problem being there is no "Fn" key. So I suppose this option will just turn off the special function on these keys?

  • PC key caps for iMac keyboard

I am planning to switch from PC to iMac as soon as the 2012 iMac becomes available (whenever that may be). Since I use my current desktop for work and gaming, I plan to run Boot Camp with Windows 7 all the time. I prefer the look and feel of the iMac keyboard, but would still prefer a PC keyboard layout, so I my question is this: where can I buy PC keycaps on the iMac keyboard. The keys in questions would be:
    iMac key     PC key
    cmd left       alt
    cmd right     alt gr
    alt left          windows
    alt right        menu
    f13               insert
    f14               print screen
    f15               pause/break
I have found several websites that sell replacement keycaps for iMac keyboards, but I have not found any that sell PC keycaps for iMac keyboards. Any tips?

Thanks, The hatter, but I would prefer to keep the iMac keyboard since I really like its look and feel. No idea where I can buy PC keycaps for it?
I just strikes me, wouldn't this be something Apple could sell to custmers that buy iMacs to use primarily with Windows? I mean, since switching to Intel processors and offering Bootcamp, Windows would as natural a choice for iMac users as OS X?

  • Hash key on UK mac pro keyboard?

I'm an avid twitter user in need of a hash key! I have a UK keyboard and need to keep my £ sign. Alt, control or shift +3 don't produce a hash sign for me. Any ideas please?

Annoying isnt it?!? try Alt+3, should work well enough (FYI, I use it in Excel via VMware and its CTRLALT3)

  • 2013 iMac Extended Keyboard - Replacing key Hinge - What Style?

I have an original wired Apple Extended Keyboard, that I special ordered with my new 2013 iMac (thin style iMac). I believe I have the latest Apple Wired Extended Keyboard - Model MB110LL/B (for use with OS 10.6.8+)
Some of the keys were sticking, because I stupidly spilled a very small amount of soda on the keyboard. I was able to remove all the few (6) keys that were "sticking" slightly …. and clean them up with rubbing alcohol, a Q-tip, and canned air.
Unfortunately, one or two of the hinges slightly broke (the little side pin's on some), although all (6) snapped back in place I still wanted to replace the original hinges with exact same new hinges (that have all the side pins).  However, after purchasing the key hinges I needed, from an eBay seller, I found that even though he stated the key hinges were also from an extended keyboard …. that mine and his don't match, and likewise can't be used in my iMac keyboard.
In looking for reference on-line (for extended keyboard key hinge model styles - for the wired keyboard), I still haven't found the exact same match for the key hinge syle I have on my iMac keyboard.  I have found reference to styles AC05, AC28, Type F, Type H …. but still nothing that looks like the hinge style on my keyboard.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance in determining which "model/style" key hinges my 2013 iMac wired Extended keyboard uses.

Here is a photo of the keyboard "Arrow hinge" I have on my keyboard …. and that I am unable to determine which model/style "hinge" it is:
However …. in looking over some reference I have …. It looks like it might be the "AC05" hinge style

    Hi Moe,
Sounds mostly likje a bad KB, do you have another to test with?
    Or...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Using the new imac keyboard on the macbook pro

is there a software update that allows the use of the new features of the imac keyboard when hooked up to a Macbook pro (core2duo) It would be great if the screen brightness, dashboard keys, etc would function as they are labeled.

I suppose you're thinking of the 27" iMac that might be used as an ext screen and/or the 24" LED.
Both come with a MiniDisplayPort input - that will work with current MBpros. If you want to connect an older MacBookPro with only a DVI connector you'll need an additional DVI to MiniDP converter.
Such animals exist and cost approx 100 Euro like this one: http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html

  • Keyboard: some keys not working

Some keys not working.  Need help/suggestions.  Not great with computers so PLEASE give details/steps re: how to do what you suggest - thanks!
Details: intel based iMac running snow leopard 10.6.8.  Apple wireless/bluetooth keyboard (came with the iMac).
Some keys suddenly stopped working:  space, tab, capLock, option key to the right of space bar (one on the left works), down arrow
The problem happens in various programs (safari, pages, etc)
The keyboard is fine on another iMac
A different keyboard is fine on this/the involved iMac
(nutshell: keyboard works fine - computer works fine, unless they're together)
    Here's what's been tried/checked:
-checked the settings for universal access ("mouse keys" are off) and checked for any bluetooth keyboard shortcuts.
-in system preferences "speech" is not set for "speak selected text when the key is pressed" - this is not checked/selected
-tried creating a new user but had the same issue so it's computer-wide rather than just a user account
-removed the keyboard and reconnected (using the +/- signs and "disconnect" and putting in a new code of numbers to pair keyboard)
    -language/text is set for english
-did the keyboard viewer and the keys in question did NOT highlight when pressed (but don't forget the entire keyboard is fine on a different computer so thekeys aren't the issue)
-"slow keys" is turned off re: keyboard in system preferences.
Any help is welcomed.  It's frustrating knowing the keyboard works, just not with this computer.  Please help.  Many thanks!

yes - not sure how this works...if you can see my original post there are a lot of details in there.  If you can't...
nutshell: the keyboard works on a different iMac
a different keyboard works on this/the involved iMac
I tried to create a different user and the keyboard still does not work so it is computer-wide
I also removed the keyboard from the computer (using the +/- symbols and disconnecting and then repairing it.  The problem remained
Thanks for any help.  It's crazy that the keyboard is fine and the computer is fine but together, there's the problem.
    Thank you!!!

  • Is the new iMac keyboard (small) the same as the one in the new 15" MBP?

Hi, I have an easy question but I couldn't find any information on the Internet. I just bought a 24" iMac and I was willing to buy a skin for the keyboard (I already have an iSkin for my 15" 2008 MacBook Pro and is great). When I opened the box I had the surprise of a smaller keyboard (without the number keypad). So the skin that I was looking to buy for the imac keyboard did not fit in the new one. My question is, if the iMac keyboard is the same as the one in the new 15" MacBook Pro. I ask this because I can't find a skin for the new small imac keyboard and if it is the same as the MacBook Pro I can buy the skin for that keyboard. But before wasting my money I wanted to be sure they are the same.
Thank you very much in advance

That's no news, although it there are other things apart from the layout that could make them different: the spaces between keys and the format of the keys are also important. As I don't have an new MBP I was wondering if someone could tell me if the keyboard of the imac and the one of the MBP are the same.

  • Hash key - anyone?

    Hi
This may seem daft but I can't find a hash key anywhere on my Macbook - not even in special characters. As these are often used in passwords it would be useful to have it.
    Can anyone help please?
    AJ

Ok, I'm guessing # is what you mean by hash key?
If so, it's referred to as the number or pound key on a us keyboard and is shift-3. But, since that is likely £ for you, try opt-3 as that gives us £ on a US keyboard.
You can enable the keyboard viewer by opening Language and Text System Preferences, Input Sources, and check the Keyboard & Character Viewer. Then, check the show input menu in menu bar. Select Keyboard viewer from the menu. Now, hold down different combinations of modifier keys and the keyboard viewer will show what keys produce various characters.

  • Aluminum Keyboard Repeat Keys after 10.5.7

I have a white 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo. I bought an aluminum keyboard for it. After installing 10.5.7 my keyboard repeats keys, delays responses, etc. I thought the keyboard might be bad so I replaced it under warranty. The new keyboard does the exact same thing. The KB is plugged directly into the USB port on back of the imac. Anyone have any thoughts? For now I am using the old white keyboard that came with the imac and it works perfectly---even though it doesn't feel as good as the aluminum keyboard.

    Hi Jacob,
First, try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
If that doesn't help, download and install the 10.5.7 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
Run Disk Utility and repair permissions when it's finished.
