UK : N.Ireland : EDGE vs GSM

I know that there are three different types of Internet connection on the iPhone. Those being WiFi and EDGE but I'm concerned about the third; GSM. When connected to this the symbol at the top is a solid blue rectangle. What is the deal with this type of connection? Is it part if the "unlimited" usage or is there a charge associated with it like that of the old style WAP, as this used to cost a fortune to connect. My iPhone seems to spend most of its time connected to this but I don't want to be using it if it's going to be costing me!
Advice please from anyone in the UK, particularly those in N.Ireland. Thanks.

I believe you meant to say "EDGE vs GPRS". "GSM" is the wireless carrier network which means they use GSM SIM cards for cellular identification where as some wireless carriers use CDMA that uses an ESN (Electronic Serial Number) to identify the customer on the network. EDGE is faster than GPRS but slower than HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) which gives speeds of 3.5G or more depending on the carrier. The iPhone currently doesn't support HSPA.

  • Switch b/w edge and GSM on Blackberry Curve 9380

Hey few days back I bought Blackberry Curve 9380. Basically I'm new to Blackberry Universe.
Generally when I'm at home, I prefer to use GSM only coz I have Wi-Fi. But when I swtich off data usage, connect to Wi-Fi, the Browser and other internet applications say that they are unable to internet.
Also guide me how to switch b/w GSM & edge network...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First Your need BIS - Blackberry Internet Serives subscription from Vodafone IN, this is the unique feature which seperates other mobile devices from Blackberry.
Browser, Facebook, twitter and all other apps require BIS subscription. Only appworld will work in Wi-Fi mode.
You can change the Browser settings to Hotspot to work in wifi, but i think in OS 7 it will detect automatically.
if you have BIS subscription 3G is free.

  • Constantly getting "No Service"iPhone 3

    G'day people
My iPhone 3G is starting to really annoy me.
Every day, at some point, the phone says "No Service" and I can't make or receive calls. Yet, if I do a reboot I get 5 bars!
It's got to the point where I have to reboot the phone twice a day. Is anybody else having this issue?
    I've got firmware 2.0.1 and I think it's worse than when I had 2.0
    Thanks
    Al

I keep getting these same issues, granted I don't get the best signal where I live but, I thought the iPhone 3G was meant to fall back to EDGE > GPRS > GSM? I didn't have any problems with my 2G iPhone at home so it's absolutely puzzling!
I also keep getting 'NO SIM' and 'SIM NOT VALID' type messages in between and making calls has become really hit and miss. Has anyone else had these problems?
I've been reading up on trying to resolve this problem myself, so i've tried every trick in the book! including reseating the SIM. I'm just about to try the SIM in my 2G model to see if it's a SIM issue but I don't see why it should be, there can't be that much to SIM card so much that it could develop a fault.
At this stage I'm just a bit disappointed, Apple products are usually really good and well built, but it seems to me that the iPhone 3G was a bit of a rush-job...
Thankfully the staff at the store are the most helpful people ever, so I've got no doubt if it turns out to be a hardware issue, then they will replace it.

  • 3G Issue in Blackberry Z10

    Hey reltoukhi,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question..
Do you find this issue happening if you leave Wi-Fi hotspots?  Also when did the issue start?  Have you tried a new SIM card into the BlackBerry Z10?  Also does the signal go down to edge or gsm in lower case letters?
I look forward to your reply.
    Cheers.

  • BBM not working after download

i downloaded the newest version of BBM and after i turn off the power and rebooted, i get an error - "Cannot set uo BBM - a temporary BBM server error has occur" - i retried, uninstalled - reinstalled - turn power off - back on again, etc.

Do you still have BlackBerry data plan? What do you see beside the network signal strength: 3G/EDGE/edge/gprs/gsm??

  • I am currently outside of USA...Cannot receive or sent texts...

    I am in Ireland. I have a Droid X2.
I have no reception or roaming service at all. I would like to only send and receive text messages to/from USA. How do I do this? I cannot, CAN NOT call the 1800 customer care number from outside of the US so please dont suggest it.
Please advise how this is possible? No network is available when I go to 'Settings - Networks'
Surely there is some number I can call to contact Verizon customer care from outside the US besides this 1800 number?
    Thankyou for any help/advice

The X2 is a standard CDMA phone (Verizon/Sprint in the US), Ireland has only GSM networks.   There is no way that your phone will work on anything other than Wifi.  Did someone tell you it would?
You can call Verizon Global Services collect on +1 908 559 4899, and they may be able to suggest options, such as sending you a global phone if you are there long enough.
If you really need a phone, you can always buy a cheap basic GSM phone, or rent one from sites like

  • 3G reception problem when abroad

My iPhone 3G has worked flawlessly since I got it, with no 3G reception issues whatsoever (I'm from the UK).
I am currently in Bulgaria on holiday, and when I got here I noticed I had "No Service", but my girlfriend (who has a Samsung on O2) had full signal with M-Tel.
I looked under Settings > Carriers and seen lots of Bulgarian carriers listed, both 3G and 2G, but no matter which one I select I get a message about "Restricted Network. Your selected cellular network is restricted." Restricted. However if I turn 3G off, I get all the 2G Bulgarian carriers just fine, full signal.
    Any ideas?

I have consistent 3G reception problems in faraway Tasmania, using iPhone 3G 16GB. The 3G network I'm on is 850MHz UMTS known as NextG provided by Telstra.
Drop outs on 3G, generally poor reception and dramatically increased 3G battery life have forced me to turn it off and use GSM/EDGE exclusively (GSM uses almost the same 900MHz frequency spectrum here in Australia, so performance is not being squewed by that).
Here is a test as an example:
I positioned the iPhone so that it was 6k away in direct unobstructed line-of-site from our only Telstra tower (the only telco we have in our region)
According to the ACMA database our Telstra tower has almost identical power output on both GSM and NextG at 28 and 32 watts respectively.
Of course the transmit antennas on the tower for each of those services can't both be in identical positions, which is the only thing I can think of that might account for the differences in measurements.
Checked the number of bars signal strength and the dBm Field Strength readings for both NextG and GSM and here are the results:
GSM: full 5 bars and field strength of -81dBm
NextG: only 2 bars and field strength of -98dBm
The actual practical performance of the phone pretty much is in accordance with those figures, so I suffer regular drop outs or no service at all on NextG while GSM is rock solid.
There is no question of tower overload as there are only 30 or so residents served by that tower with little road traffic.
I'm disappointed by the poor NextG performance which is pretty ordinary everywhere I go and I'm even more disappointed at the dramatic decrease in battery life when NextG is turned on.
Keeping NextG turned off seems to be the only solution and that is not good.

  • Blackberry curve switched to GSM, I want EDGE back.

Hello, my Blackberry Curve 8310 switched itself to GSM about a week ago and I remember it being on the EDGE network. I am really dissapointed because I cannot send/receive MMS messages. Can someone please give me a solution so I can switch back to the EDGE network?

With the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot.
Give it 5 minutes to reboot and settle down from all the initial data activity.
    Does your EDGE signal return?
If not, you could have a local tower issue, which do occur from time to time specific to ONE cell tower for your carrier. I know my best friend across town from me went a week with EDGE service at his hime only (travelling to another part of the city, he got EDGE) where he only had "edge" or "gprs". About 5-6 days later, he said EDGE returned to his device when at home.

  • Express mini pci GSM/EDGE card

Looking for an express mini pci card with GSM/EDGE AND 802.11 capability to replace the 802.11 card in my 3000 laptop. Looked at Sierra Wireless. Looks like their cards have GSM/EDGE but no 802.11.

Ok, if we talk about the MBPs - is it possible to purchase GPS receiver on Express Card interface? And what kind would be best in order to avoid any compatibility issues?

  • GSM iPhones on EDGE at an Apple store

Ok I was in Shops at Mission Viejo California...stop by an Apple store and play with the iPhone 4's...Verizon and AT&T...I was comparing network speed so obviously I turned off WiFi and turn on 3G...
A few minnutes Verizon has full bars on 3G...but AT&T was full bars on EDGE...I checked the rest of the GSM phones on display and surely enough they are on EDGE too...Reset the phones and same thing...But when I pulled my iPhone 4 I have full bars on 3G...
I did the test with my iPhone 4 and yeah AT&T was definetly faster but Im curious why the GSM displays are all on EDGE...

Sometimes a Reset Network Settings is necessary when switching back to 3G in some areas, or Resetting the phone. Had to do this myself the other day. And even after that it took a minute before it locked on.
You need something better to do with your time. Do they have volunteer programs in your area?

  • I purchased the ipad mini wifi+cellular for att but i'm afraid that when i travel to egypt( i do it frequently) i won't be able to use cellular there, can i insert a local nano sim from egypt for a 3G network or GSM/Edge (Not LTE)?

Does the ipad mini Support Global 3G networks (Egypt's GSM band 900/1800 and 3G is 2100)?

Thanks James. I was hoping that was the case.
I've already updated the software, from a quick search that seems to be the network issue for imessage/FaceTime. Is there a fix for this? Ive no back up to go back to.

i have a gift iphone 4s from brother in law ( Ireland ) how to use and activate the iphone 4s in alaysia?

If has to be carrier unlocked to use in "alysia",  If it is, install the SIM card from your local carrier.  If not, contact the carrier to which it's locked.  Only they can unlock it.

  • Downloading Java apps on N82 over GSM/Edge/3G does...

I can't download Java apps when I'm connected via any phone network connection but via WLAN I can download them fine.
I can download S60 apps fine on both type of connections.
Can anything in the phone block this?
Colleagues with other S60 phones have not experienced this so I can't imagine that the operator is blocking this on purpose at least.

so i take it this is a new issue ? you had no issues of such prior? ok try this make sure you do a full back up, make sure that your phone is up to date with the latest firmware and try the first two codes, you might have tried the first one already. the second one will erase all your data also remove your memory card if you have one.
    1. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data)
Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list.
    2. *#7370# - Reformat your phone
    3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is dead proceed with reflash if not, turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
re-flash - hold the following buttons *, 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service.
