Ultra 10 ~ post install disk errors on startup

I've so far had Debian Sarge and Ubuntu LTS up on the Ultra10, the system starts up and closes cleanly and importantly restarts. They both run reliably and with little fuss.
Now with Solaris 10 I get a clean install from CD as far as I can determine however after shutdown the next restart after install gives many HD errors which the system can't recover from. Unmounting the drive and fsck doesn't help at all. This left me figuring it's a data rather than a hardware error.
I can't find any logged errors describing similar problems with Solaris 10 on the Ultra 5/10 series platform or obvious available patches for this problem.
Any good ideas out there??
I did read a workaround for an earlier version Solaris which hinged around the shutdown parameters not forcing the HDD to sync causing data errors. Standard is command flags are (??) "shutdown -y -i5 -g0" the commended workaround being "shutdown -y -i0 - g0". I might try this if I can find where to change the shutdown parameters.
Anyone else experienced this as a problem or can see an obvious workaround?

1. Under the 10.1 cd booted, is it possible to tell it to boot from the HD without reinstalling (like under OS 9 startup disk control panel), and how?
With the installer loaded select Startup Disk from the installer's Installer menu. Alternatively restart the computer and hold the OPTION key down until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the desired startup volume, then click on the large right arrow button. Alternatively restart the computer and press and hold the "X" key down until the computer starts up in OS X.
Note that none of the above will work if your OS X system is corrupted.
Normally, if you restart the computer and hold down the mouse button, the CD will eject from the optical drive. The technique you used is not "UN-Apple" like. It is, in fact, included in the User Manual as well as online Help for ejecting a CD that is stuck in the optical drive.

  • Repairing disk problems - cannot start up from Install Disk!

    Tiger version 10.4.10
I need to repair the startup disk. I have gone through the usual routines (holding down 'c', changing startup disk in system + attempting to change the startup disk using Utilities on the Install disk). On startup the Install Disk is by passed and the disk I want to repair effects the start up instead.
    I would appreciate any help!
PS - Would Disk Warrior help with this problem?
    Regards - Pete S

    Hi There
To repair the hard drive without the install disk you can do the following. Hold down the command + S keys at startup until you see a black screen with white text. Once the screen has fully loaded type fsck -f. Note the space between the k and -.
    Hope this helps

  • Boot Camp error: The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

    Hi!
    I am getting the error:
"The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.  The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Jounraled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
I read up some on google, but all of them says that they have crated a partition and that is the problem, I only have the standard "Macintosh HD".
I tried to create a partition manually in disk utility but then the error message: "Partition failed with error message: Could not unmount disk."
Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy.
    Thanks.

This message, and threads like yours got asked daily for over two years, now it is only a couple times a week!!
Is it so hard to follow through? you were to have backup already, clones are best, then erase/format and restore.
    Then partition.
Some have been able to use Disk Utility booted from OS X DVD or another drive, and repair the drive.
You have to use Boot Camp Assistant (99.9% anyway) to create and achieve a proper Windows Master Boot Record partition.

  • Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command   S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.

Disk Utility says everything's fine, but Install disk doesn't find my internal drive as a possible destination. When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping "cannot mount errno = 19" message.
Problem started when I used Tech Tool Pro 6 to "de-fragment volume". Had to cancel that process before it finished because I ran out of time. Thereafter, when I startup my machine normally, I get the gray Apple logo at first, but it changes to a prohibited symbol (circle with a slash thru it) and hangs.
When I startup holding the Option key, I can see my internal drive, but I get the same results as above.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD, it does not find my internal drive as possible destination.
When I startup using the MacBook OSX Install DVD and then run Disk Utility, it finds my drive, allows me to "repair" and says everything is fine.
When I startup with Command + S, I get a looping error message "errno = 19" and cannot stop it to do anything else.
When I startup from Disk Warrior v4.4, it does not find my internal drive to do any repairs.
When I startup from Tech Tool Pro 6 and run the "computer check" diagnostics, everything passes but the Volume Structure, which fails at "Volume Extents (B-tree)." When I use TTP's "Tools" option to run "volume repair" it will show my internal drive and allow me to click the GO button, but nothing happens and nothing changes.
I have a Time Machine backup on an external USB drive, but for as long as the internal drive doesn't mount, I can't use the backup to restore.

It's a false report and should be ignored.
I would not rely on TT as I've already said earlier even before Grant posted similar advice.
I really think the Rigid Disk Block may be corrupted. This holds the partition map and could prevent a volume from being unmounted. Unfortunately, there is no way to fix that without repartitioning the drive which will remove everything. So, before going down this road I hope you have backups or can make a backup.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.
    5. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Boneheaded Install Leads to "Disk Error"  Can it be fixed?

I installed windows following the instructions (sort of) but missed the note indicating that I should "format the partition using the NTFS file system." So now I get the infamous (based on the number of related posts I've seen) "Disk Error" message Is there any way I can "unformat" my partition or did I just throw away 25GB of my hard drive?
Note: unlike some others, I have no trouble starting up the OS side of the house.
    Best,
    David
    but it was unanswered.

Use the convert fs=ntfs (check on syntax and spelling)
I think it is safer to keep it NTFS. If you need to write to NTFS, use MacFUSE but be aware that it can or use to interfere with the OS X Startup Disk control panel even recognizing and showing "Windows" entry to change default.
Use WinClone in OS X to backup if you think you need to or want to restore an image later.

  • Install Windows XP in Leopard WITHOUT Boot Camp - No More Disk Error

For those of you having problems installing Windows XP in Boot Camp because of the formatting screen never showing up and then the system restarting with the dreaded:
Press any key to boot from CD .....
    Disk Error
    Press any key to restart
I too spent many frustrating hours trying to find a solution that worked. I searched these threads, tried many of the solutions suggested here and elsewhere, including recreating the Windows CD without a specific file, using the FreeDOS boot CD (couldn't ever get it to work, though I understand some people have had success), Reinstalling Leopard and trying again, dancing around the laptop with incense three times counter clockwise while chanting the name of my childhood pet... etc.
I FOUND A NEW SOLUTION!!!! A much easier solution!!!!
For anyone who is having this problem and is planning to run virtualization software.
(Something that let's you run Windows from inside Leopard)
    SKIP BOOT CAMP ALTOGETHER!!!
USE VMware Fusion to install Windows.
I decided to try a different approach entirely and did a completely fresh install of Leopard (not sure if that was necessary or not but with everything else I had been trying I wanted to clean it up anyhow) and then installed the 30 day trial version of Fusion w/ the unlock key VMware emailed me.
I entered my information and Windows product key into Fusion's "Easy Install" Interface, clicked install, and about 30 minutes later I was browsing around in XP.
I HIGHLY recommend this option for anyone having difficulty with the formatting screen not showing up. I have a Bachelors Degree in Information Systems and still spent the better part of 2 days working on this boot camp problem, including numerous hours with the higher tier of apple's tech support. I suspect that those of us having this problem may have an OEM or systembuilder copy of XP... but that is for Apple to deal with - not me, I have better things to do with my time.
If you are planning to run Windows from within Leopard anyhow, just buy Fusion and to **** with the hassle.
You can go to VMware's website and get a 30 day evaluation copy to see if this will work for you before you decide if you want to purchase it, they will email you the unlock key.
Best of luck, hope this saves someone some time!

For what it's worth, I've used the OEM version (copper disk), Select version (bulk license), and an NFR (partner program) version of XP Pro with SP2 and they all worked. On my MacBook Pro's I use boot camp to split the disk in two, reboot using the Windows CD, and pick the partition to format it.
Apple states that you need a full version of Windows, and the OEM versions are slightly different from the commercial versions, but both should work. On my Mac Pro, I created a 3-disk OS X RAID-0, and left the 4th disk alone. I rebooted with the Windows CD and installed Windows to the 4th disk without Bootcamp at all. Once Windows was installed, I used the Leopard disk to install the Bootcamp drivers. The Mac side has no Bootcamp installation but I can still choose between the volumes by holding down the option key at boot time or by setting the startup volume in the OS X Startup disk preference pane.
The solution to use virtualization, unfortunately, will not work for many situations where graphics are involved. Most current major products, such as AutoCAD, 3dsMax, and so forth, will not run properly or at all without specific DirectX 9 or OpenGL support. To date both Parallels and VMWare do not completely support DirectX or OpenGL.

  • ''Disk Error'' messege after installing Windows XP

Hello, I installed Windows XP Professional SP 2 on my MacBook Pro, and after the installation was complete, (before setting up, only after copying the files) When it rebooted to set up the windows, it said
Press any key to boot from disk, I didn't press anything (as it will get you back to the installation) then it said
    *Disk Error*
Press any key to reboot (this didn't work so I had to reboot it by the power button)
After logging in from Mac (by ejecting the disk on startup) I have found that all the Windows files are in place in the BOOTCAMP partition.
I have read in the manuals that when choosing NTFS or FAT to not choose 'leave intact', but it only gave me the choice of NTFS, although I had chosen 40 GBs for the Windows Partition. I chose 'leave it intact' Could this have to do with it?
    Help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The 'leave it intact' is indeed the reason for your trouble.
During the Windows installation you have to reformat the BootCamp partition as per the instructions in the BootCamp Setup Guide (pages 8 - 10).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1722
    This is a must.
The reason why you only get NTFS as a choice is because FAT32 is only presented by Windows when your partition is smaller than 32GB in size.
When more than 32GB Windows refuses to use FAT32 for it.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Error during Tiger install, disk utility (DVD) says could not unmount disk

OK, I'll start at the beginning. I was running 10.3.9 on my iMac G4. I hooked up a new firewire external HD. Transferred my iTunes music over, everything worked fine. Ran software update to make some updates (iTunes, Quicktime, Security Update, maybe another one) that I had been putting off because I had been out of space. That's when the problems began. It said I could not install updates, so I restarted. Then it hung up at Login Window starting. I did a few hard shutdowns (holding down power button) to try again, but was unsuccessful.
Read all the forums. Decided that I should have repaired permissions, etc. before installing the updates. So I started in single-user mode, ran FSCK, all that stuff, following the instructions very closely. Still kept hanging up at Login Window. So I started up from the Panther install disk, repaired permissions (made a bunch of repairs) and checked hard drive (said no repairs necessary). Restarted, still hung up at Login Window starting.
So I did an archive and install. There were errors near the end of the Panther install, and it said it could not finish. But the computer started up OK, and I was able to back up all my personal data onto the external HD.
So I decided to upgrade to Tiger, thinking that would fix everything. During the upgrade, it said there were errors installing files and to try again. Did so, same result. The computer did start up in Tiger, but clearly was not operating at full capacity (slow, some things didn't work).
So I decided to erase and install. Again, said there were errors and to try again. Did so twice, same result. Started up from the Tiger DVD and ran Disk Utility. When I clicked Repair Hard Drive, it said "could not unmount drive."
So now I am stuck. I have a wiped hard drive. Can't repair it, and can't get Tiger to install properly. Help!
(i do have an Apple store in town, but I haven't gone to the Genius Bar. Wasn't sure how that worked.)
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hmmm. And you're sure that when you select the main
hard drive entry in Disk Utility it shows a SMART
status report that says "Not supported"? That's
really odd because your model isn't too old to have a
    drive that doesn't support SMART.
Yep, looking at it right now. I've got the drive that says "38.2 GB ST3408..." selected, and it says "Not Supported."
By any chance would you have another external
Firewire drive on which you could install Tiger? If
you do, then you could try installing Tiger on that
drive. If you can then boot the iMac from the
external drive you could then try cloning the system
from the external drive to the internal drive.
I have the one external HD firewire drive. It has my backed up files on it. Could I still install Tiger on it without erasing those files?
You could do the same thing from another Mac if both
support Firewire. You could boot the iMac into Target Disk Mode while it's connected to
another Mac's Firewire port. You could then clone
from the other Mac to the iMac's hard drive that will
appear on the Desktop of the other Mac.
And I do have another Mac, which I am typing on right now. It's sitting right next to my "sick" iMac. If I recall correctly, it's an iMac DV special edition. It does have a firewire port and I think it has a DVD drive. It's running 9.0 currently.
You can use the Restore option of Disk Utility to do
the cloning. The process is as follows:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the source or startup volume from the left
    side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the source or startup volume to the Source
    entry field.
    5. Select the destination or backup volume from the
leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry
    field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this
step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the
    Restore button.
So should I use the firewire external HD or the old iMac to do this? (Thanks so, so much for all this help, by the way. I really appreciate it. I love my iMac and want to save it! I have to go cook dinner right now, but I'll come back later to check your answer and try your suggestion.)

  • Disk Error while Installing Windows

Okay so this is the story: I get my brand new MacBook Pro and install Leopard on it, with the disk that came with my Macbook Pro. After a while I decide to install Windows, so I get my Windows with SP2 disk, load up bootcamp, choose for it to partition 32 GB for Windows, put the disk in and start the installation. I choose to have Windows installed in the partition that Boot Camp created. But after the installation is done and the computer reboots, I get a black screen with the following:
Press any Key to boot from CD ...
    Disk Error
    Press Any Key to Continue
Now there's a period of time when it allows me to 'Press Any Key to Boot from CD', but when I do that it just tries to install Windows again and the same thing happens. If I just wait, it gives me the Disk Error, and when I 'Press Any Key to Continue' nothing happens. So I reboot my Macbook Pro and it takes me straight back to that screen. Help! I can't even figure out how to remove the Windows install CD, and I can't use the Macbook Pro at all! I hope it's not busted...

Press X at startup to force a boot to Leopard. Press Eject, F12, or hold the trackpad button during startup to eject the Windows CD.
Start over with BootCamp and see:
