Ultra 10's Question

So, I recently liberated nine Sun Ultra10's from my university's trash heap before they were thrown away. I would like to use them for doing some grid computing, but unforunately, not many grid computing projects are compiled for SPARC. However, they do all have cards with X86 coprocessors on them.
How can I use these coprocessors as well as the main processor to do this computing? What kind of software do I need to use the cards? Do I need a specific Operating System to be able to interface with the cards? Can I virtualize the main SPARC processors so that X86 code will run on them? If so, how?

it depends on which SunPci card you have... the I, II and III I think are limited to Solaris 9 and below (and XP). you will have to search the hardware forum and the Sun site find more...
the first three are limited on ram and cpu power... so, try... too bad you are trying it with an U10... not much horsepower there either... and ide to boot.
good luck!

  • Ultra 40 M2 questions

    Hi
My PC recently died, and I'm looking for a replacement. The main two candidates are a Ultra 40 M2 and an HP xw8/9400. I won't ask any HP questions here ;-)
There are a couple of things that bother me a little about the Sun machine.
    1) No serial port. I've seen in another thread that it should be possible to buy a connector. Alternatively, there are USB to Serial converters. The two things that I'm likely to use are my old external dialup modem (which I use once or twice a year when my ADSL ISP is down) and to connect to my HP calculator. Does anyone have any working experience with either of these two solutions?
    2) No floppy disk. On my old PC, I used the floppy to boot DOS in order to do backups with Norton Ghost. It should be possible to make a bootable CD from a floppy image, though I've never tried it. Alternatively, any suggestions for a different backup method?
Now a couple of SCSI related questions:
I'd like to transfer data from my old PC. It has 4 hard disks, 2x U2W SCSI, 1x UW SCSI and 1x FAST2 SCSI. I'm not sure if the HBA is still working; if it is, then I should be able to just plug it into the U40 and then read the data. However, if it isn't, will I be able to plug at least the U(2)W disks into the integrated hba?
Are SAS disks bootable from the integrated hba? (the Dell Precision 690 has to boot from a SATA disk, according to their web site)
    Paul

    Well, a couple comments...
    - Good luck finding any new PC with serial and/or
floppy :( I hate how those are being phased out, I
still need them on occasion (more serial than
floppy).I haven't looked that hard yet, but both the Dell Dimension 690 and HP xw9400 both seem to have at least one serial port and a floppy drive is an option.
    - USB to serial adapters work OK most of the time...
MOST devices I've been able to get working that way.
Others I've just had to keep an ancient PC around
for the serial port!I'm beginning to thing that I might just give the "Try and Buy" offer a go.
    A+

  • KT3 Ultra BIOS problem + question

    Hi
after switchin on the CPU Halt command detection. My PC beeps 3 times after shutting down. D-LED says memory problem. When I turn off the PSU and after a while turn it on, everything is OK and PC boots normally. Does anyone know the reason of the beeping??
Question: has somebody tried (somebody very rich to afford buying Barton) Barton (or T-Bred FSB333) processor on KT3 Ultra??
    thx a lot  )

    Hi,
Switching on CPU HALT Command will make your system unstable. That's the message of the beeps.
You should be able to improve this by using a better PSU. Otherwise, there is no reason of using CPU HALT command as there are many software CPU Coolers you can get.

  • Sun Ultra 5 / Newbie Question

Hello. I am a student preparing for a career in Deskside Support. I recently purchased a Sun Ultra 5, so I could increase my experience with UNIX / LINUX. When the system powers up it goes through what seems to be a normal boot process and then keeps repeating the below error:
SUN, hme0 : No response from Ethernet network : Link down -- cable problem?
I am assuming that it is looking for some sort of a network connection. It is not on nor will it be on a network. I also have a copy of Ubuntu on the way, as I have heard this is a good source of LINUX experience. Does the forum have any thoughts or comments on what the error is saying and how to get rid of it?

Here is some additional informaiton that I was able to capture from the boot process.

  • KT4 Ultra CPU Upgrade Question

I am trying to upgrade my CPU from a 2100 XP to a 2800 XP on my KT4 Ultra and am running into trouble.  I was under the impression that all I had to do was turn up the FSB frequency in CMOS and everything would be OK howerver this doesn't appear to be the case.  Currently the FSB Freq. is set to 100 and I can get it above 104 or the system will not POST.  Has anyone out there put a 2800 with the latest BIOS in a KT4?  What setting need to be changed and what values should be used in CMOS??
    Help please!!!!

    set to 166

  • Ultra 60 SCSI question

We have an Ultra 60 running Solaris 8 but we need a LVD capable card. I've gotten my hands on an Adaptec 29160N but it doesn't show up in the "probe-scsi-all" output.
I guess I'm asking if its compatable at all and if it is what do I have to do to make it work?
    Thanks for any help
    Chris

If the peripheral must be connected to a LVD card, then the
375-3057 (X6758a) adapter is qualified for that systemboard.
Here's the link in the SSH for the E220R system's SCSI cards:
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/E220R/components.html#SCSI
The U-60, the E220R, and the Netra 112x systems all use the same systemboard.
Adaptec products and Sun SPARC systems just don't function well, together.
Adaptec doesn't feel there's enough market out there, to include compatibility in their HBA's.

  • KT4 Ultra Overclocking Questions.

I have read the above sticky in regards to this board. MSI (6590) KT 4 Ultra. My questions is this ..I have an AMD Athlon 1800+Xp CPU. In bios for FSb its default is 100...........obviously thats too low because BIOS will under clock the cpu to FSB 100 x whatever the multiplier is. I can set in BIOS as high as 272 mhz and a multiplier of 12.5/13.5 stable for gaming .  But how come Wcupid reports the FSB as being 142.34 when its obviously set in BIOS to 272 .........Is that just the CPU FSB multiplier or the actual system FSB ? One would think that if you set the FSB in BIOS to 166 that it should report the FSb as being 166 mhz ........266 in bios should be 266 FSb for system should it not?? .
Anyway the default ghz speed for this CPu is 1.591 GHZ at 266 FSb mhz set in BIOS. But i use the 12.5/13.5/ multiplier which makes it 1730 GHZ CPU speed and reports cpu as XP 2000 + in post info. Now i can go up in increments of 1 in BIOS FSb all the way to 274 ..anything higher is unstable. But i thought this moboard could be overclocked to a 266 mhz FSb . Wcupid shows it as 142.34 right now and the multiplier in BIOS is 12.5/13.5x and the FSB in bios is set to 272 i beleive . Maybe im dumb but can someone explain how this can be.

Sure i do ....If what you say is true ...Because AMi BIOS has a setting for FSB in BIOS which mine is set to 270 MHZ. Im a veteran and i have built CPUs so overclocking is not the issue. The issue is the amount of MHZ i can set in bios that does not equal up to what it should in Wcupid. Please re read my post and you will see what im talking about or go into AMI bIOS ver 1.0 if you are able to and see what im talking about. I can reach 276 in that setting (max with this bios version is 280) but the multiplier has to be dropped to 11.5 to gain stabability. Id rather have a lower 270 setting and higher multiplier just because its stable and is not overheating . I want to know why i cant set that in BIOS to max setting (280) . CPU wont boot if i raise it past 276 at 11.5 multiplying.
With the BIOS setting at 270 and the multiplier at 12.5/13.5 the following info is taken from Wcupid screen
    Internal clock 1779 ghz
    System BUS 284.68
    System clock 142.34 (143)
    Multiplier 12.5
Im used to AOPEN jumper setting boards to overclock .

  • Pb ? MSI KT4 Ultra

    Hello,
I own a msi kt4 ultra motherboard, 512 Mo Ram Twinmos PC3200 and an athlon xp1700+@2012 MHz (175*11.5)
One day, I managed to boot at 194*10.5 but now, it is very instable with any fsb > 180. Where is the pb ? Is it due to the PCI or the AGP ? (because the coef is still 1/5 nd not 1/6 ?)
Is it very impossible to succesfully boot at 200MHz with a KT4 Ultra ?
    Other  question :
I manage to boot with my ram at cas 2-3-2-6-2Ways but not 2-2-3 or 2-2-2
It is very strange that I can put the RAS precharge at 2 clocks but not the RAS to CAS
    Couls anyone help me ?
(sorry for my english , I'm french...)

but its very doutfull the board would run at it
it only has 1/5 divider so at 200 fsb agp would be at 80 not 66 and pci at 40 not 33

  • Setting Up & Mixing Sample Based Sequenced Drums in Logic

    Hi All,
I have been a long time user of Propellerheads Reason and recently moved to using Logic Pro 8 for all my sequencing, processing & mixing needs. It has so much more power, options, plugins etc. I still intend on using Reason for a few of its synths however, but ultimately I want to sequence everything in Logic. One area i'm having difficulty replicating is setup up a framework for handling drums.
In Reason I have used the ReDrum step sequencer to program up my drum sequences using one-hit samples I have collected from various places. This works great for what I do, and ReDrum allows me to send each sample (such as kick, hats, snares, etc) to its own chain of processors and effects giving me total control over each individual drum sound.
Now that I plan on using Logic for all sequencing and effects/processing, i'm wondering what the best way is to go about replicating this setup in Logic. I want to be able to sequence the drums together using a step sequencer in Logic, so I need to know the best tool for the job for this, but I also want to be able to have individual control (ie EQ, reverb, compression, pan etc etc) over each drum sample.
Has anyone done this kind of thing before? Would really appreciate any comments.
If anyone is interested in fully understanding what I'm trying to do - here is the article that explains how its done in Reason:
    http://www.musictechmag.co.uk/mtm/features/setting-up-and-mixing-drums-in-reason
    Thanks.

I have been looking at Ultra beat - my question is if its possible to route each sample through its own mixer channel for full control of each sample? Essentially using Ultra beat as the sequencer - do you know what I mean? I havent yet been able to work this out - it may not be possible?

  • Aperture and me Ol' G5

Okay... I'm no longer happy with iphoto for I need a bit more bang for me buck so I'm looking at Aperture.
I have a single processor G5 1.6 GHz PowerPC Tower, 1.5 gigs of ram, with a GeForce FX 5200 graphics card.
Now all looks good, but Aperture specs state I need a Geforce FX 5200 Ultra card.
    Questions as Follows:
    1. Is there difference between a GeForce FX 5200 card and a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra or are they both the same thing? ... or am I in need of an upgrade?
    2. What's a good Graphics Card to upgrade to in order to get the best performance out of Aperture?

Certainly, but if Eric's been using iPhoto all this
time and his only complain is that "is not enough" in
terms of features (not performance) in my opinion
Aperture would do just fine on his box with the new
    video card.
Absolutely, the G5 is a fine piece of hardware, so why chuck out a working box if it can do mostly what you need. If he doesn't need Pro performance, then so what?
I've just recently bought Aperture, for a similar reason to Eric, and found its performance a little worse than iPhoto, but the extra features are a real advantage, even for a serious hobbyist.
I have a Dual 1.8 G5, about the same era as the 1.6, but of course a bit more poke, and has the same graphics card. I am not seeing the performance issues reported by some, which seem to be with PCI-E cards, rather than the older AGP cards.
We have threads all over the place from people with
PowerBook G4 running Aperture and while is not the
best place to run it, they do just fine. If Eric has
been using iPhoto all this time my gut tells me he
doesn't have to deal with publisher or customer(s)
deadlines. A single G5 1.6 with the ATI video card
    should do just fine.
I have it running on an iBook 14" here.
Let's not get caught up on performance discussions
here. Eric's original questions were related
strictly to video cards. The answer to his second
question is (as David mentioned) that the ATI will be
a very good card for his system, and Aperture will
    run.
Now, if we want to discuss whether the G5 1.6 is a
computer worth upgrading or replaced by a Mac Pro,
    that's a different topic.
I realize that by giving Eric the specs of my box as
a point of reference may have not been the best, and
rather mentioned the people running Aperture on G4s.
It's all what we're used to, and what we need from our system. As for the economics, I think it's very easy to justify upgrading a G5 for better graphics speed. I looked at the possibility of a new Mac, but there are too many cost caveats to consider.
To upgrade my G5, I needed a bit more RAM, I just added another 2GB to make it 4.5GB (which just about seems to the enough now), that was £180 from Crucial. I have also ordered an ATI 9600 card for £130 (the X800 has reports of spiking the PSU). So I've just upgraded my G5 for a bit more use in the future for about the cost of a Mac Mini.
If I bought a new MacPro (which seems to be the general advice given nowadays), I have to buy a new Mac (obviously), which would be about £1500. On top of that, I'd have to add some more RAM anyway, and the stuff in a MacPro isn't cheap, so add another £300. I am also running my Mac on an ADC monitor, so I'd either have to buy an adapter (which is about £90), or a new monitor - perhaps another £300 to get the same quality.
Oh, yes, and I still use some G5 native software too - such as Photoshop Elements, so I wouldn't have any speed advantage there at all. And of course, more expense when the Universal version arrives.
Besides which, judging by all the comments in this forum, I wouldn't necessarily see any performance gain in Aperture anyway (indeed, it might even be worse!).
I would say, on balance, if you don't need outright performance, and you have a G5 PowerMac, then a card and some RAM is without doubt a very viable and economical solution for Eric.
PowerMac G5 DP 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4.5GB RAM, Formac Gallery, LG Flatron, soon to have an ATI 9600.

  • Adding another HD

I was looking to add another Harddrive to my macpro.
I see so many types with different prefixes... IDE, SATA, IDE ULTRA.
My question is, what type will slide into the bays on my mac pro?
    Mac Pro 2.66ghz/5gig/250gig/7300GT 23' ACD PowerBook 15' 1.5ghz/1gig/80gig   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Your Mac Pro came with a little handbook with DIY (Do It Yourself) sections on hard drives, memory, etc. You can also find those in PDF from the link above "manuals".
It takes SATA drives. Any. But I would avoid Seagate due to very bad/poor disk I/O and slow writes.
I would look at the WD RE2 500GB which can be found from $171 at Zipzoomfly (retail, not OEM like some places) to $254 direct from WDC.
You can find reviews of drives and benchmarks and noise from StorageReview and SilentPCReview as well as others. Barefeats is good because it focus is Macs. And there is AMUG.com

  • Photo editing in iPad

I have around 4000 photos in Photo app on iPad 2. I would like to create some special effect on some of them, so I am thinking about purchasing any of the photo editing apps like Photogene, PS Express or Photo fx ultra.
My question is: do these apps work on photos already imported to iPad (in Apple Photo app)? It is completely out of question to import the photos second time. And if they indeed work on these photos, can I see the results in Photo app.
    Thanks for answer.

Most apps for editing photos will connect to your photo library on the iPad (no need to reimport). I have PS Express and PhotoPad. Both are decent, but not the only options by any means.
