Ultra 24 reset in vista

Anyone experienced Vista resetting during general use on the Ultra 24?
Ultra 24 with 2GB RAM. Latest firmware installed from Tools and Drivers 1.1 DVD.
Standard config with NVS290 graphics and not RAID configured.
All Windows drivers came from the Sun CD.
Second disk with Solaris DX build 86 works rock solid.
The Vista installation is a new installation with SP1 added and randomly resets without any logs when doing just about anything ie Skype, browsing pics or even when left static.
:-(

And bad RAM it was indeed.
The good news is that the platform is now stable and working with a replacement set of DIMMs.
The double good news is that I can now use the bad RAM to write some knowledge documents for SunSolve on how to test and diagnose bad DIMMs on Intel platforms.
It's a win win.

Try the new BIOS 1.30 that corrects the CRC ERROR, it will slow down your transfer rate and you should be fine.  This is a bad fix from MSI, cuz you lose HDD performance aswell!!

  • Windows Vista Ultimate Password

I have a HP Pavillion Vista Ultimate, Windows.
I finally got past the admistrative code,,....and now I am tring to sign in to Windows and the programs I have on my laptop,...unforunately I, apparently keep putting the wrong password in. Once I finally get in, I will either reset the passwords, or delete them all together, to not have future problems like this again. Of course I should have written them down, but didn't,...just trying to start again. Any and all help from one of you gurus/geniuses would be greatly appreciated,...and oh yeah, I 'will' be writing these down,..if I reset,....thanks so very much for sharing your knowledge.....Maxie.

  • Installing Airport Express on VISTA system

Have an Airport Express from 2005 that has been successfully installed and running without problems on an HP Laptop running Windows XP. Just got a new HP Laptop running VISTA. Have heard a lot of issues related to installing with VISTA. Can't imagine that the distribution CD from back in 2005 is the right place to begin. Apple store suggests that I just buy a new Airport Express but obviously I do not want to do that. Does anyone know the most efficient steps that will lead me to a successful installation of my old Airport Express on VISTA? Thanks in advance for any help.

    The following worked for me.
Cancel any documents in the printer queue.
Open Control Panel > Printers and delete your AirPort Express Printer.
Open Control Panel\Programs > "Uninstall a program" and uninstall AirPort Utility.
Open Control Panel\Programs > "Uninstall a program" and uninstall Bonjour.
Turn off Windows Firewall. (Windows Firewall prevents Vista from printing to a USB printer connected to an AirPort Express. No amount of port-opening seems to be able to get around this. YMMV. See notes at bottom of post.)
    Download ZoneAlarm Free Edition:
    http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm
    Install ZoneAlarm.
    Open your web browser.
When ZoneAlarm pops up, check the "Remember this setting" option and click the "Allow" button to allow your web browser to access your local network and the Internet.
Download a fresh copy of AirPort Utility from:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortUtility_Setup_5_3_2_forWindows
Download a fresh copy of Bounjour for Windows from:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/BonjourforWindows
Change the wireless security properties of your computer and LAN to WPA2 Personal AES. Why this specific security setting? Because for some reason when you use AirPort Utility in Vista to restart your AirPort Express, it will automatically reset your Vista's Internet connection to WPA2 Personal AES security. (At least it did mine.) Do yourself a favor and setup your computer and LAN this way to begin with:
For the Linksys WRT54G router, browse to 192.168.1.1 and change the settings under Wireless > Wireless Security
In Vista, use Control Panel \ Network and Sharing Center \ "Connect to a Network" > (right-click on your wireless connection) > Properties
Connect directly to the AirPort Express using an ethernet cable.
Install AirPort Utility in Vista using your fresh copy of AirPortSetup.exe. Approve any software/firmware upgrades that it finds.
    Open AirPort Utility.
When ZoneAlarm pops up, check the "Remember this setting" option and click the "Allow" button to allow AirPort Utility and any related services that it starts to access your local network and the Internet.
Use AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort Express to join your existing wireless network using WPA/WPA2 Personal AES security.
After configuring your AirPort Express, click on the "Manual Setup" button (if you haven't already) of AirPort Utility, then click on the tab labeled "AirPort Express" and edit the first text box so that it displays whatever you want to name your AirPort Express (for example, "XXXXX").
Directly underneath that textbox, the hostname of the AirPort Express should also appear. It should be the name of your AirPort Express plus ".local" (for example, "XXXXX.local"). If it doesn't appear, click on the edit button and add the name.
    Remember this hostname for later.
Disconnect the ethernet cable connection between your computer and the AirPort Express.
Reconnect to your wireless network (if you haven't already).
Use Airport Utility to rescan for devices to verify that it can connect to the Airport Express over your existing wireless network.
Install Bonjour using your fresh copy of BonjourSetup.exe.
After installing Bonjour, if you don't see Bonjour Printer Wizard either on your desktop or in the Bonjour program directory, then Bonjour was not completely removed before it was installed. You must use Control Panel\Programs > "Uninstall a program" to completely uninstall Bonjour, then reinstall using BonjourSetup.exe.
    Open Bonjour Printer Wizard
When ZoneAlarm pops up, check the "Remember this setting" option and click the "Allow" button to allow Bonjour Printer Wizard and any related services that it starts to access your network and the Internet.
Use Bonjour Printer Wizard to set up your network printer. If you want this to be your default printer, check the box in Bonjour Printer Wizard that offers this option.
    Open Zone Alarm.
Add your AirPort Express hostname (for example, XXXXX.local) to Zone Alarm's Trusted Zone.
Double-check your Zone Alarm "Program Control > Programs" settings. The programs of concern should appear as:
    Program---------------------------------------------Access--------Server
    AirPort Base Station Agent.................V.......V.......V.......V
    AirPort Utility.......................................V.......V.......?.......?
    Bonjour Printer Wizard........................V.......V.......?.......?
    Bonjour Service...................................V.......V.......V.......V
    Host Process for Windows Services.......V.......V.......V.......X
    Spooler Subsystem app.......................V.......V.......?.......?
    Open Control Panel > Printers
Left-click once on your network printer to highlight it, then right-click on your network printer and choose "Run as administrator > Use Printer Offline".
Right-click on your network printer again, except this time choose "Run as administrator > Use Printer Online". This little "Offline/Online" trick should convince Vista that, "Yes, Vista, really, I would like to have access to my network printer even after I restart Windows."
    Restart Windows.
    Voila! You can print.
Celebrate by hooking up a pair of powered speakers or your stereo to the AirPort Express audio jack and streaming your favorite iTunes music wirelessly while printing documents at the same time.
If printing ever fails in the future for some reason (paper jam, power failure, etc.):
    Fix the immediate problem.
Use Airport Utility to restart the Airport Express.
Cancel all print jobs in the queue.
    Print.
    Notes:
If for some reason Windows Firewall gets turned back on (aaaggghhhh!):
It'll freeze up your of your AirPort Express printer after the first job in the queue. In this case, you'll have to turn Windows Firewall off, restart the Airport Express, cancel all print jobs in the queue, delete your old AirPort Express printer from Control Panel > Printers, use Bonjour to create a new AirPort Express printer, and do that "Offline/Online" trick again.
    * In retrospect, now that Zone Alarm has revealed the settings necessary to allow AirPort printing (and AirTunes) through a firewall, one should be able to just translate the firewall settings over to Windows Firewall or another firewall. (Of course, this raises the question of why one would still want to use Windows Firewall.)
    :o)

  • Audigy LS W/ Alchemy Upgrade - Error after installing Vista Sp1

First off, yes I know it is a release candidate, and yes, I can uninstall it... but the error is there, and will of course be there when the final release is pushed out on updates unless it is fixed.... so here goes...
I installed Vista Sp RC yesterday. No issues that I identified immediately, everything seemed fine. Yet today when I tried to listen to podcasts, iTunes wouldn't play audio (other apps still play audio fine). I tracked this down to a sound driver issue, so I went to control panel to load the Sound controls, and lo, there was an error box that did appear:
    "Audio Enhancements Problem"
"Windows has detected that audio enhancements for the following device are causing problems:"
    "Speakers (SB Audigy LS)"
"Would you like to disable Driver Enhancements for this device? (Yes/No)"
I'm not sure what the side effect of disabling driver enhancements would be - it sounds like pretty much crippling the card, which will not accept as I did pay for the upgrade to support Alchemy in Vista for it. I'm also not sure if I tell it to disable the enhancements if I'll ever be able to turn them back on again without a reinstall - vista is that way with some of its hidden settings.
So - is there another way around this other than simply uninstalling SP (which hopefully will work), and most importantly, will there be an update to fix the problem before Sp final pushes?
    My system is as follows:
    AMD Opteron 70, 2gb PC4000 DDR
    320GB Seagate SATA Dri've
    SB Audigy LS
    ATI Radeon HD2600XT
    DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D
    Windows Vista Home Premium
everything worked until today, and I'm assuming my install of SP RC was the trigger. I'm about to start a rollback, but that will of course take some time. I will post back here if the rollback does NOT fix the problem. I'm hoping it will, but still need a fix before SP final pushes.

http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Vista/Vista-SP-RTMs-and-Lies/ http://www.microsoft-watch.com/conte..._question.html Is it RTM or not Google it and see. Main issue with SP is drivers (not many). That's all I care to comment on.You could reinstall any drivers that are a problem.Didn't work for me.

  • 100% CPU usage by iCal

For some reason my iCal application uses 100% of CPU. What can I do to avoid it?

I had a similar problem with iTunes.
Here's the link to what fixed my problem immediately.  Please note: my problem was resolved following just the three steps pasted below.  The original link has additional steps that may be necessary, although I did not employ them, and my problem of 100% CPU USAGE is gone!!!  Thank God!

  • Cannot download McAfee software

My daughter reset her vista OS laptop to factory settings due to a software glitch. I have reinstalled the BT Broadband software but any attempt to install the McAfee download gets prevented by a message from windows saying DEP has closed the installer because of a problem.
I am not used to Vista having got XP on the other pcs, but I don't think I am doing it wrong. Some of the Windows updates keep failing to install also. Could this be a factor?
We currently have 3 laptops and 2 netbooks and we are allowed 7 on option2.Is the McAfee software smart enough to know this is a reinstalation and not a new pc and that 2 older pc's were replaced and not in use by us anymore? Any help would be greatly appreciated as my only other option at the moment is going nuclear on it.

  • Not sure what is wrong.

I am thinking it's a flash related problem, but I don't think it is. But anyway.
AIM/MSN/Yahoo - whenever I type and send something to someone, it IMMEDIATLY signs me off. Likewise when someone tries to IM me. The second they hit enter they see me sign off. I can sign on fine, but the minute someone IMs me or I IM them, I get immediatly kicked off. On Yahoo it signs me in and out CONSTANTLY, probably 3 times  per 10 seconds, and it's annoying my friends.
Youtube - videos will load maybe 1/4 of the way, then stop. I have to click above the place it stopped in order for it to go again, but then stops once again at a certain point.
Flash based chats - The minute I press enter to type something in I am immediatly kicked off. People say they can IM me back on it, but I cannot see anything on my end.
Ugh this problem is annoying and now becoming a huge pain. actually need to get on AIM and talk with someone really important and I don't have their number. Please help if you can.
PLUS, I already tried un-installing all the programs including Flash and rebooting. Nothing. Please help, thanks.

In the last few days I've been having problems with vista shutting down due to critical errors. The computer would reboot, then it would start back up and the time in vista is reset to 2002? All my programs are highlighted in the start bar as if they have just been installed, and other wierd things.
    These are the only error messages I have seen (as it has happenned when I am not home);

So doing some research on microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa469203.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa469184.aspx) it seems that perhaps the video driver froze and vista could not get it to restart, so it rebooted. But why the date change?
Now this morning, I turn the computer on and the MSI-live screen comes on and tells me my cmos battery is low and that the cmos date/time is not set. I start up the bios and what do you know, the date is 2002.
SO my questions are: are my problems lately due to the motherboard, or is there possibly a hardware conflict? Is the date change on vista related to the motherboard cmos battery? And if the battery is only low, why would the date and time need to be reset? I could see doing that if the battery was dead and had to be replaced. Lastly - should I change the battery, can it be changed?
I'd appreciate any insight or direction at all. Thanks.

When you have the BIOS setting back to factory default like that I think replacing CMOS battery is the 1st thing to do especially if the MB is several (3 or more) years old. The date of your BIOS (2002) indicates a pretty old battery if it hasn't been changed before.
Actually the date is that way because of the time reset in vista - the report is a windows generated report. The computer itself, and the motherboard, are about 4 years old. Still time to change the battery possibly.
I haven't had any problems within windows ever since the msi-live screen comes on and warns me the battery is low (which it does whenever my computer has been off for a while). I just fix the time in the bios, then save and resume and windows has been fine.
I'll change the battery tomorrow and give it a week or so.

  • PCIe SB X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro Series - Crackling (when quad-SLI enabl

    Hey Everyone
I just bought this card to upgrade from onboard but I'm having issues with crackling. It happens mostly when mousing over anything that reacts to the mouse pointer or graphically in any way. For example scrolling down a website causes major crackling and popping and it only happens when quad-SLI is enabled.
I have 2x 9800 GX2 running in SLI on an EVGA 790i Ultra SLI motherboard Vista 64 with 4GB DDR3 RAM both graphic cards and the sound card are running on IRQ 6
It's extremely annoying and it doesn't happen when the computer is just sitting there but as soon as stuff starts happening like videogames/videos/websites etc crackling can be heard.
I've updated to 2.7.5 and the problem is still there, motherboard BIOS, NForce drivers and video drivers are all up to date as well.
Is there any solution to this?

Yeah, I have this same problem also... I have 2 9800GX2 quad sli and when it's enabled i get crackling popping and then sometimes the sound cuts out!! Only with quad sli enabled..... I also have the 790i ultra and 4gb of ddr3@700mhz..... I believe that this is related to the graphics cards and the sound card sharing IRQ 6 which also happens to me. It gives all cards on the pci-express lanes the same IRQ 6!!! The reason it doesn't happen with onboard sound is because it gives the onboard irq 22. If someone could find a way within the bios to be able to change this or if this can be changed in a future driver update it would be great!! In the 790i bios it assigns the graphics cards and soun IRQ while onboard is IRQ 0! You can't assign an irq in the bios either! Only options are PCI or reserved!!!

  • AirPort Disk works on Vista but is ULTRA SLOW on MacBook Pro...please help.

This is nuts, huh? Please help.
I can copy files using Window's Vista at about 7MBps so it takes around 2min 40secs to copy a previously bought 1.3GB iTunes TV show from the AirPort Disk (connected via USB 2.0)to my Vista machine. I understand this is a reasonable speed, if you think it should go faster let me know. When I try to play it with iTunes directly from the Airport Disk(by control clicking it and telling it to play with iTunes, not sure this is the best way, advice appreciated) it plays okay but I get a fair amount of stutters where it will skip a 1-4 seconds. Any way to fix this? Or should I just download it to my computer and play it from there. I was trying to save space and confusion on my computers and just play via the Airport Extreme Disk.
NOW THE WEIRD STUFF! It takes 4 hours to download the same TV file mentioned above from the Airport Disk to my MacBook Pro! And to stream the movie from the Airport Disk is impossible. Can anyone offer suggestions? I searched online and could not find any help.
Additional Info that might be helpful:
-AirPort Extreme 340ll/a, Version 7.5(I assume that's the firmware version).
-I erased with 0s and formatted an external 7200RPM 8MB Western Digital drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" via my MacBook Pro's USB port, using Disk Utility.
-My wi-fi connections seems fine: for web surfing it is fast with my Macbook and Windows computers, so that's not a problem. FYI, I did some internet download speed tests and got like 15,000-20,000kbps, which is pretty good, right?
-I hooked the drive up directly to my MacBook Pro's USB 2.0 port and copied the same HD TV show file to the computer, and Apple's "Activity Monitor" utility showed it is reading and writing at 30MBps which I understand is quite good. So it does not appear to be a hard drive problem either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cause of problem:
I found out that the problem was that in the "Airport Utility" under "Internet Connection" tab, the "Connection Sharing" had been set to "Off(Bridge Mode)". This stopped my MacBook Pro from accessing the AirPort Disk(an external hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station). I still find it weird that My HP computer could access the AirPort Disk just fine and my MacBook Pro was so ultra slow(i.e. 4 hours to copy a 1.3GB file!) accessing files on the hard drive.
So, how did the default setting get changed to cause the problem to being with? I got some error pop-up box that said there were 2 NAT tables causing a conflict of some sort, so I followed it's instructions which put it in bridge mode which caused the problems. The reset of the wireless router put the "Connection Sharing" back into "Share a Public IP address" mode which is the default.
So anyway, this appears to be the end of this story, and I hope this post saves some people out there from some headaches and lost time!
    Peace!

  • Why did I have to do a reset to keep my printer from using so much ink? Was not able to select "plain paper." Was printing in "Ultra Premium" mode.

My printers (two Epsons) would not let me select <Plain paper> when printing anything, and always defaulted to <Ultra Premium>, which is the reason I've been using a ton of ink for the last several months. What caused that? I finally did a Reset to Basics which took care of the problem, but what created the problem?

hello LesS., you'll probably have to contact epson's support about this issue, since i don't see how this would be related to firefox or mozilla products: support.epson.com
    thank you for your understanding
