Ultra 60 cdrom problem

Hi all,
I just bought a toshiba XM-5701B for a Sun Ultra 60, but every time I start the computer up it ejects the cd, no matter if there is cd in or not. I have two jumpers on ID2 and ID4. Is the cdrom not working or is it something about the jumpers. At OBP I so the probe-scsi commad and cdrom is there, seems ok, but it stills eject the cd. There is no way to leave it closed.
Anybody knows ?
Thanks.

I noticed that your drive was set up for " Target 2 "
Just for drill - try changing the SCSI jumper on the drive to ID #6.
For some reason, the vast majority of SCSI CDrom drives must be set to ID #6 on most of the Ultra series machines. I have had similiar problems in the past with U-10s and U-60s. Make sure that the "block"
jumper is properly positioned on the rear of the drive, also.
Worth a try, no ? ..........................John.

• KT3 Ultra cdrom problem

Ive been having some problems getting my cdroms, or any cdroms for that matter to work correctly on my KT3 Ultra (MS-6380E). The bios recognizes exactly what my drives are boots, and both windows and dos recognize that they exist but 99% of the time they will not read any cd's. They have this problem no matter which IDE channel i plug them into, but my hard drives have no problems at all in either channel. I've tried changing the IDE cable, plugging in only one drive at a time, messing with the master/slave settings, resetting my bios, updating my bios, drop kicking my computer and lots of other stuff.
Im almost certain that the problem is not with my cdroms because i dont see how they would both break at the exact same time and a third cdrom i tried from another computer would have the same problem. Im also fairly certain it is not a software problem because i have reformated, repartitioned, cleaned my MBR and virus scanned 900 times. I also have the same problem even with my hard drives unplugged completely and booting off a boot disk.
I dont see anything else that could be causing the problem besides perhaps a faulty motherboard but i cant find anyone that even has the slightest clue what is wrong, or any reference to any similar problems anywhere online. Does this sound like a something a motherboard problem could be causing? Here are my system specs:
MSI KT3 Ultra (MS-6380E)
Athlon XP 2000+
256 mb crucial pc2100 DDR SDRAM
GeForce3 ti200 64mb
SB Live! Value
Netgear NIC
40 GB samsung hdd
60 GB seagate hdd
the cd roms currently in my computer are a RICOH 4x4x8 burner and a generic 56x. Ive asked a ton of people and have been trying to fix this problem myself for months. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks.

80 wire ide blue end to board
tried them 1x 1 as some drives just will not pair up
does bios see them right,is that ide on auto

• Kt333 Ultra 2 + Msi 52x Cdrom = Problems

im running the kt333 ultra 2 mother board, and have bought an msi starspeed 52x cdrom, problem i am having is that when it boots up, and scans the Ide's it throws out a bunch of ascii characters for the cdrom, in the bios, if i set that sec ide master to cd/dvd it wont find one, if i let it auto detect, it shows the strange ascii art. any ideas why to msi products wont work together?

HI sanityloss,
Can you list out your IDE devices such as :
IDE 1 master : ......
IDE 1 slave : ....
IDE 2 master : ....
IDE 2 slave : ...
(RAID) IDE 3 , IDE 4... etc
Also, tell us how you connect the IDE cable(s). Is it 80-conductors or 40-conductors type? Blue header on the motherboard?
And also how do you set the jumpers on all the drives, Master, Slave, or Cable Select?
Your issue here might be something wrong with all these settings, such as wrong cabling, wrong jumper settings, etc.
Please give us the information so we can sort this out.

• Ultra 10 Problem

Hi.
I would very much appreciate any assistance with my problem.
I have an Ultra 10 that i am trying to install Solaris on. I have tried Solaris 9 (which i used to install on another machine last week) and downloaded Solaris 10, both have shown the following problem:
At ok prompt:
Boot
boot device disk:a file and args:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable
Boot cdrom
boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2.0:f file and args:
short disk read
the file just loaded does not appear to be executable
the drives are present
probe-ide
device0 ATA Model: ST39120A
Device1 Not present
Device2 Removable ATAPI Model: SAMSUNG CD-ROM SC-152C
Device3 Not Present
I have added the above cdrom after getting the above error message trying to boot cdrom with the original cdrom drive as well.
I have tried boot -d, boot -r and i get part way into the solaris install, when it loads the grey background, then it stops.
I am beginning to think the ide controller might be busted.
Any expert advise or tips will be most welcome.
Kind Thanks,
Ed

Hello,
I have a similar problem. I have loaded solaris 10 and solaris 9 and Aurora. Aurora install's but GUI freezes after root login. Solaris 10, I untar BIND 9.2.5 then ./configure, Then I set the ar environment. Then make, Then make not found. then I change the $PATH in .cshrc to /usr/ccs/bin
I save the path and logged off and the system dies. white screen's me. then when it starts to boot the file can not be executed. Same with solaris 9 but it white screen's me when I installed the cluter packages.
Then when it boots the file does not appear to be executable.

• Kt3-ultra big problem

i have just bought a kt3 mobo and am having some serious problems getting it to work properly.
the 1st problem is my cd burner or dvd will not install anything. if it is allowed to autorun it will stop giving various errors. and if i install by clicking setup.exe the same happens. also it sometimes restarts the computer.
i have plugged in an old cdrom which seems to work fine.
the 2nd problem is my broadband connection. i am using an alcatel usb modem and i cannot get it to connect to the computer.
i install all the drivers first then plug it in, it then says it found the modem and is installing it and completes with your hardware is now installed.
all that happens now is the lights on the modem looks like its going to work but then goes off then back on again.
this goes on for as long as its connected.
i am using :
windows xp
amd 1200 thunderbird
256 ram
400 watt power supply
kt3 ultra
ibm 80 g.b deskstar
i have also been swopping componants with my other computer and i know everything is working fine.
i hope someone can help because i have been trying for 10 days now to get everything running and i am pulling my hair out.
many thanks

Hi i have been having problems with my adsl cuting off and the modem lights paling up a reset will usually work to get it connected again. I am using an external sagem adsl modem and the power draw for it is 400ma, most other usb devices only draw between 2 - 10ma. This can cause the computer to hang and the modem to disconnect. To fix this buy a self powered usb hub that is capable of more than 500ma per port this will eliminate the problem. As for other power issues i have 3 cdroms 2 of which are writers i have a gforce 4 vido card network card and have had no advers affects from power other than the USB problem hope this helps

• Ultra 10 problems

ok this is a add on from "ultra 10 not displaying anything on monitor"
Ive got the problem down to being either the motherboard or the power unit..
Ive got it to this because when i managed to continue installing solaris 10 i recieved a post message saying:
power on self test failed cause: dump_async_error
Now im gessing this is some kinda power failure. when solaris 10 finished it automatically reboted my machine however after that i cant get anything ie monitor display, posting etc.. The machine powers on the fans spin and the keyboard bleeps but then nothing else..
it doesnt sound like the hard drive powers up nor the cd player.. what makes me wonder is it the motherboard due to everything being connected to it.. i also read that someone had a similar problem and changed the motherboard and it fixed it .
does anyone now what that error is trying to tell me because i want to get the rite part to fix the machine..

A solitary blip during a reboot cycle is usually something to be ignored.
The lack of output to your monitor only suggests that output is being redirected
to the serial console port. You will need to connect to that to see if anything is happening.
I cannot remember what you may or may not have done in the earlier forum thread, with the hardware.
Power it all down and open the case.
Remove the cpu hold-down bar and gently remove the cpu.
Make sure that all 300 pins are nice and straight and gently reinstall the cpu.
Remove all RAM and then reinstall them to their same slots.
Remove any and all adapter cards and wire harnesses, one by one,
and reinstall them right back to where they were.
This remove/replace action will re-seat and burnish all electrical contact points.
Then expect to start all over again with the installation of the OS.

• Dell Power Edge 6400 CDROM Problem

When installing Solaris 8 for intel in a Dell Power Edge 6400 with two processors, everything looks fine at the begginning before booting, I mean the Cd rom drive is detected as booteable, but when the system start to install, it asks from where to extract the operating system and in the list does not appear the CD Rom, it just displays the networks cards.
Please I have more than a week with this problem, I already check the HCL, I already changed the HD, the CdRom (twice), but it continues without detecting the cdrom after booting.
The Cdrom is in the scsi 5.
Any body in UK, USA, Mexico or wherever please HELP.
Carlos Herrera

If I remember right the Dell Power Edge had an adaptec 160 controller which
you have to download and install the scsi drivers from the Adaptec website.
Check and verify which scsi controller you have on your Dell.

• Newbie with cdrom problems

After installing the OS from cdrom, I cannot access the cdrom. The /usr/sbin/vold process is running. I cannot find the cdrom drivers in my dev directories. Where do I go to figure out what to do next?

** not sure if this would help...

I've been nashing a problem with VOLD all day today..
unfortunately, I'm not a guru with Solaris.. ;) Yet...

stop vold
try manually mounting the cdrom

mount -f hsfs /dev/dsk/c0t2d0 /cdrom

you may have to use a different /dev/dsk combo and I've not figured
out the c0t2d0 stuff completely yet or how to predict what it would
be on different systems, or even if it would be different.

In anycase, I would definately like to know if you're able to mount
manually after vold is stopped (that's what has solved my problem on
four sun's from sparc's to e250 & e450)

• Sun Ultra 60 - Problems to install patch 119850-21

Hi,
I'm running Solaris 10 on my Ultra 60. I've been using for many months - without any problems - Sun Update Manager in order to keep the system updated. Lately it always tells me that patch 119850-21 is available, but when it tries to install it fails. I also tried to download and install that patch manually in single mode with patchadd, and also tried smpatch. Both of them fail to install this patch, reporting problems in checkinstall, saying that the patch is already installed - which is not true according to 'patchadd -p'.
Thanks for any input on this issue.

Of course. Here you have it:

• KT4 Ultra RAM problems and others

Hi,
just bought KT4 Ultra, with 512MB DDR-RAM 266/2100 CL 2,5 and Athlon XP 2100+, BIOS V1.2.
During boot-up the computer tells me, that I've got 1024 MB RAM although I only have 512MB. Linux says the same and RAM Test Software does too !! I can't install RedHat nor Windows XP, they always crash, prbably due to RAM problem.
I've already tried out all 3 memory slots.
Any suggestion what to do ?
Why does the computer not recognize any device on the 3rd IDE port ( neither IBM Deskstar w/ 40GB, LS 120 Drive, CD-ROM Drive). My BIOS doesn't show ANY options for the 3rd IDE port!
TIA

Is that in the BIOS under: Serial Ata - enabled ? ( I did that !)
Try http://www.memtest86.com
Already did, it always crashes.
Have you tried another RAM?
'Have no other RAM available right now.
And I can't start my computer anymore, since the cpu fan wont work. I plugged the cpu fan into the manboard-fan plug but then the mainboard won't be cooled. That can't work all too long, can it ?

• KT4 Ultra Microphone problem

I have a KT4 Ultra and there appears to be an error with the microphone circuit. The PC2001 standard specifies that the Mic Audio is on the tip , 5v bias on the ring and ground on the sleeve.
The KT4 however puts the 5v bias with the audio on the tip. It will not therefore power a standard electret mic.
By moving the centre/subwoofer jumpers J4&5 I can move the audio and 5v to the ring but they are still combined, not separate as they should be.
Also the the signals are wrong on the front panel audio connector JAUD1. Pin 1 has mic input and power combined (instead of just audio) and pin 3 (which should be mic power) sits at 0v.
Before I start cutting tracks and adding jumpers to the board to correct the problem has anyone already worked out the best way of fixing this error ?
Laurie

Hi,
A normal electret mic has 3 wires.
The only thing you need to do is add a capicitor in the audio wire of the micro of about 10 microF.....
Like this if I'm not mistaken:
Audio+cap to the tip
Powerline to the tip as well
And ground to the shield
This way it should be powered and work.
Then again, I'm not sure, but there is no harm in trying.

• 8800 Ultra Resolution Problem with Acer AL2616W

Hey guys,
I'm not entirely sure if this is an nvidia or MSI issue but I wanted to post to see if anybody had any info on it. I have a nice new 8800 Ultra that kicks butt, and I've been using an Acer AL2416W(24in.) on it without any problems. But just today my new Acer AL2616W(26in) arrived and when I hooked it up I noticed the rez will only get as high as 1440x900. The native rez is 1920x1200 but I can't get anywhere near that without the monitor freaking out. I'm trying to set them up as dual monitor but that 26 in will not get any higher than 1440x900. I installed the latest Acer driver for it as well as tried using the driver for the 24in model. but i didn't fair any better.

Make sure your refresh rate stays at 60Hz on the 26incher.
what else could he have done...
Try to swap out the ports between the one that occupies the DVI connector for the AL2416W and the one for AL2616W.
See if that makes any difference at all.
Swap the cables between the monitors too to see if your 24incher freaks out like its bigger brother.
I hope that helps...

• FX5900 ultra MAJOR problems !!! Help !

My problem is simple. I got done building my computer around 3 weeks ago, and since the first time i tried to play any one of my games , the picture freezes and the only way to exit is the power button. The freezing could take place a minute into the game or 20mins into the game , but it always happens. I also, from time to time get a blue screen ,with white letters, in windows alerting me that my system must and will shutdown but it comes and goes so fast i cant read the full page.
Some people have suggested turning 8x into 4x until a new driver that solves the problem comes out, but even that wont work for me. I've tried all the driver versions , MSI and nVidia with 8x & 4x and they all crash.
My system specs:
ABIT KV7 Mobo
MSI FX5900SP Ultra 256
AMD XP 2600
512mb DDRAM
400 watt ATX 12v power supply
PS I have latest drivers and bios
DOes anyone have any suggestions ? i need your people!!!

ok sorry for taking this long. I HAD to sleep after yesterday.
Anyways here we go:
+5V +12V +3.3V
38a 18a 28a
AC input:
115V / 10A 230V / 5A ; 60Hz / 50Hz
I hope this helps, but I'd also like to add that I tried Overclocking the FX5900ultra and with 4x I played Unreal II for about an hour before the game turned into a whole bunch of straight lines , color yes but the game and menus were made up of straight lines, thought that might help with a conclusion. It DIDNT freeze.

• KT6-Ultra Boot problems

I recently replaced my mobo with a new KT6-Ultra when my old KT3ultra died.
It works fine when running but everytime I boot the machine from cold in the morning it has trouble. It comes up with the MSI loader screen, then the raid check and then it goes off. The 4 LED's on the back come on indicating aCPU failure. If I power the machine of and then back on again it works fine!!
I have reseated the CPU, replaced the fan, put new heatsink paste and it still happens each and every cold boot. Works fine on warm boot though?
Any ideas?

Guy ! this is one of the most posted problems in this forum. They call it the " Cold Boot Group ". The thread is KT6lsr Reboots and you can find it on page 3 or 4. Now is on page 3 down. Don't waste your time in hardware changes as it will take you nowhere. Seems to be a Mobo bug ( some of them ) Only can get right cold boot when system is over 20 C degrees. Other than this, all are saying is a great Mobo.

• Cdrom problem?

I have 6 ultra10 servers running solaris 5.8 108528-16. When issuing the command iostat -En, in the cdrom drive some errors appear in the hard errors field and the same number in the device not ready.
The driver is usually never used.
This is happening on all servers, some with smaller numbers, but alll show errors in the same fields.
If I test the cdrom drive is working without problems. Does it mean its going to fail?
What is the reason for getting them?
Thanks!

I would ignore this output for the CDROM because you have no CD installed in the drive. Install a CD and you should see Size: 18446744073.71GB <-1 bytes> decrease substantially. Bottom line, ignore iostat -En for the CD.
