Ultra 60 SCSI question

We have an Ultra 60 running Solaris 8 but we need a LVD capable card. I've gotten my hands on an Adaptec 29160N but it doesn't show up in the "probe-scsi-all" output.
I guess I'm asking if its compatable at all and if it is what do I have to do to make it work?
Thanks for any help
Chris

If the peripheral must be connected to a LVD card, then the
375-3057 (X6758a) adapter is qualified for that systemboard.
Here's the link in the SSH for the E220R system's SCSI cards:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/E220R/components.html#SCSI
The U-60, the E220R, and the Netra 112x systems all use the same systemboard.
Adaptec products and Sun SPARC systems just don't function well, together.
Adaptec doesn't feel there's enough market out there, to include compatibility in their HBA's.

  • Dell PowerEdge SC1420 with Ultra 320 scsi dirves

I am having a problem with installing Solaris 10 on the Dell PowerEdge SC1420 with Ultra 320 SCSI drives using PERC 320/DC Controller. The installation hangs at Configuring Devices and gives me some output messages:
NOTICE: MSG From Adapter: NMI ISR: NMI_BUS_INTERFACE_UNIT_ERROR
NOTICE: MSG From Adapter: NormPrioCommand was received with Fib StructType = 0xf
    The notices keeps cycling.
    Has anyone experience this issue?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Brian

    Update:
I've got the box to install Solaris 10, however, I had to remove 2 sticks of memory. Originally, the box came with 4GB of memory but now I am down to 2GB. Don't know why this is the case but I am able to proceed with the installation without any error or notice messages. Can someone explain to me why this is the case? I will put the memory sticks back in and boot with the OS installed to see what happens and will update my results.
    Thanks,

  • Ultra 40 M2 questions

    Hi
My PC recently died, and I'm looking for a replacement. The main two candidates are a Ultra 40 M2 and an HP xw8/9400. I won't ask any HP questions here ;-)
There are a couple of things that bother me a little about the Sun machine.
    1) No serial port. I've seen in another thread that it should be possible to buy a connector. Alternatively, there are USB to Serial converters. The two things that I'm likely to use are my old external dialup modem (which I use once or twice a year when my ADSL ISP is down) and to connect to my HP calculator. Does anyone have any working experience with either of these two solutions?
    2) No floppy disk. On my old PC, I used the floppy to boot DOS in order to do backups with Norton Ghost. It should be possible to make a bootable CD from a floppy image, though I've never tried it. Alternatively, any suggestions for a different backup method?
Now a couple of SCSI related questions:
I'd like to transfer data from my old PC. It has 4 hard disks, 2x U2W SCSI, 1x UW SCSI and 1x FAST2 SCSI. I'm not sure if the HBA is still working; if it is, then I should be able to just plug it into the U40 and then read the data. However, if it isn't, will I be able to plug at least the U(2)W disks into the integrated hba?
Are SAS disks bootable from the integrated hba? (the Dell Precision 690 has to boot from a SATA disk, according to their web site)
    Paul

    Well, a couple comments...
    - Good luck finding any new PC with serial and/or
floppy :( I hate how those are being phased out, I
still need them on occasion (more serial than
floppy).I haven't looked that hard yet, but both the Dell Dimension 690 and HP xw9400 both seem to have at least one serial port and a floppy drive is an option.
    - USB to serial adapters work OK most of the time...
MOST devices I've been able to get working that way.
Others I've just had to keep an ancient PC around
for the serial port!I'm beginning to thing that I might just give the "Try and Buy" offer a go.
    A+

  • Need a converter between SAS/SA-SCSI and Ultra-160 SCSI

The Netra-210 machines seem to have the small hard drives with Serial Attached SCSI. The hard drive cloning machine uses the older style SCSI connectors and we have a number of hard drives that are Ultra-160 drives.
I have not been lucky with my search and have not found a converter so that I can clone the installation from the new SAS drive to the older SCSI drives.
Does any one have suggestions or has anyone found a converter to be used with such cloning machines?
    thanks!

Trying to work with the 'dd' command at present. Maybe that will work, but I don't think it can copy the partitions over. If I create Ultra-160 drives with just the partitions in place, "dd" should be sufficient to copy the files/directories over..

  • KT3 Ultra BIOS problem + question

    Hi
after switchin on the CPU Halt command detection. My PC beeps 3 times after shutting down. D-LED says memory problem. When I turn off the PSU and after a while turn it on, everything is OK and PC boots normally. Does anyone know the reason of the beeping??
Question: has somebody tried (somebody very rich to afford buying Barton) Barton (or T-Bred FSB333) processor on KT3 Ultra??
    thx a lot  )

    Hi,
Switching on CPU HALT Command will make your system unstable. That's the message of the beeps.
You should be able to improve this by using a better PSU. Otherwise, there is no reason of using CPU HALT command as there are many software CPU Coolers you can get.

  • Sun Ultra 5 / Newbie Question

Hello. I am a student preparing for a career in Deskside Support. I recently purchased a Sun Ultra 5, so I could increase my experience with UNIX / LINUX. When the system powers up it goes through what seems to be a normal boot process and then keeps repeating the below error:
SUN, hme0 : No response from Ethernet network : Link down -- cable problem?
I am assuming that it is looking for some sort of a network connection. It is not on nor will it be on a network. I also have a copy of Ubuntu on the way, as I have heard this is a good source of LINUX experience. Does the forum have any thoughts or comments on what the error is saying and how to get rid of it?

Here is some additional informaiton that I was able to capture from the boot process.

  • KT4 Ultra CPU Upgrade Question

I am trying to upgrade my CPU from a 2100 XP to a 2800 XP on my KT4 Ultra and am running into trouble.  I was under the impression that all I had to do was turn up the FSB frequency in CMOS and everything would be OK howerver this doesn't appear to be the case.  Currently the FSB Freq. is set to 100 and I can get it above 104 or the system will not POST.  Has anyone out there put a 2800 with the latest BIOS in a KT4?  What setting need to be changed and what values should be used in CMOS??
    Help please!!!!

    set to 166

  • Ultra 320 SCSI card with Snow Leopard Server?

First off, sorry if this is the wrong place for a thread on Snow Leopard server.
I have an older Intel Xserve (xserve1,1) with the Apple-branded Ultra320 SCSI PCI-X card. This isn't a third-party card, this is the one from the Apple Store.
So, are these confirmed to continue to work under 10.6? My server runs 10.4 (I'm skipping 10.5).
    Thanks!

    Hi
A Beta version is exactly just that. No-one apart from Apple knows for certain what the release version will support. Installing a Beta version of anything on a Production Server would not be a good idea in my view. Although one could risk it if a fully working bootable clone of the current Server was done first prior to installing the Beta (or an update for that matter). Perhaps it's just my cautious nature but I personally would not risk it.
I've been part of the AppleSeed program for 10.6 Server and Client from the outset and am testing both on my laptop.

  • Ultra 10's Question

So, I recently liberated nine Sun Ultra10's from my university's trash heap before they were thrown away. I would like to use them for doing some grid computing, but unforunately, not many grid computing projects are compiled for SPARC. However, they do all have cards with X86 coprocessors on them.
How can I use these coprocessors as well as the main processor to do this computing? What kind of software do I need to use the cards? Do I need a specific Operating System to be able to interface with the cards? Can I virtualize the main SPARC processors so that X86 code will run on them? If so, how?

it depends on which SunPci card you have... the I, II and III I think are limited to Solaris 9 and below (and XP). you will have to search the hardware forum and the Sun site find more...
the first three are limited on ram and cpu power... so, try... too bad you are trying it with an U10... not much horsepower there either... and ide to boot.
    good luck!

  • KT4 Ultra Duron Overclocking question

I've got a Duron 900 and was wondering if anyone else has successfully overclocked it, and what their settings were/are?
    thanks,
    bill

I had a Duron 950 at 1100+, but forget settings.
Suggest you go to http://www.overclockers.com CPUdatabase, and see the results with your chip. Lots of good details there. Good luck!

  • Xserve G5 with Apple Supplied LSI Logic Ultra 320 SCSI Card

The Xserve G5 has been running 10.4.10 and 10.4.11. It also has the Apple supplied FibreChannel card installed.
I have tried installing this card into the Xserve and so far have been unable to get it to work, there are two symptoms...
    1) The card is visible in System Profiler, no devices connected to it show. I've tried various combinations of termination, no change.
    2) After a random period of time the Mac goes to 100% processor utilization on both processors and stays there. The Mac can then no longer be accessed remotely and stays that way. This occurs whether or not any cabling is connected.
This card is the one that Apple lists as a part for the Xserve G5 in GSX. However I've seen a few sites on the web stating that it doesn't really work and you should use a an ATTO ExpressPCI UL4D. Is this the case? Other sites have also said that the LSI card doesn't work with Retrospect, which is a concern to me as that is my objective.
Any hints would be much appreciated!
    Peter

    Hi Peter
I don't know about the others but all I've used from the G5 onwards is the range of cards supplied by ATTO. It seems clear from the symptoms you describe that it just does not work and may cause a major problem to your XServe if you persist in trying to use it.
You may as well take it out and get yourself a relevant ATTO card and never mind too much about what gsx says, it has been 'wrong' before in the past.

  • Ultra SCSI devices on MBP?

IS there a way to hook up external UltraWide SCSI VXA-320 tape drive to MacBookPro?
Either as ExpressCard? or some kind of an adapter?
    USB?
    Firewire?
    Derek

The speed of SCSI adapters is very slow.
    I think you're confusing speeds.
Ignoring the issue of how to interface a SCSI drive to a MBP, anything faster than Ultra 2 Wide SCSI has throughput at 80 MB/s or better - that's megabytes per second, not the 400 megabits per second of FireWire 400. (Remember, MB/s = (Mb/s / 8), so FireWire 400 delivers top throughput of just 50 MB/s.)
Ultra 3 SCSI or better has a throughput of 160 megabytes per second, faster than even FireWire 800's 800 megabits per second (which would be only 100 MB/s.)
This is why systems using Fiber Channel are so popular in server farms, as it delivers data at speeds of up to 400 MB/s, or 4x faster than FW800.
This is also why eSATA is starting to gain traction as a way to attach an external drive, as it communicates with drives at a maximum speed of 2400 Mb/s, or some 3x faster than FW800 (but still slower than Fiber Channel or Ultra SCSI 320.)
There's a really nice chart outlining this here.
    Just keeping the discussion honest.

  • SCSI limits on Ultra 10

I'm aware of the IDE controller issue in an Ultra 10, which limits the (practical) size to 120GB disks.
Are there such limitations on SCSI disk sizes if I were to add an internal SCSI PCI card for external storage? I'm thinking NO, but I just wanted to make sure. I'd like to get an external SCSI enclosure and hang some large disks off the Ultra 10 to store media files. Any recommended cards and enclosure solutions?
    Thanks.

Please review the Full Components List for the Ultra 10.
The LVD/SE add-in boards (e.g. PCI Dual Ultra-3 SCSI Host Adapter, 375-3057) require a 64Bit PCI slot (which isn't available in the Ultra 5/10) for proper operation.
The Dual Single-Ended Ultra/Wide SCSI (PCI) (375-0005) or Single-Ended Ultra/Wide SCSI (PCI) (375-0097) work in these systems, but are only 40-MB/sec, 68-pin, UltraSCSI (SCSI-3).
The adapters from IntraServer or Antares work too, but are about the same price as Sun's. There have been (or still are) models from IntraServer that are capable of 80-MB/sec (those based on the 53C895/53C896 chip). Probably there are more suitable cards on the I-O Technologies I-O Controllers & Adapters page http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/IOControlers.html

  • KT4 Ultra Overclocking Questions.

I have read the above sticky in regards to this board. MSI (6590) KT 4 Ultra. My questions is this ..I have an AMD Athlon 1800+Xp CPU. In bios for FSb its default is 100...........obviously thats too low because BIOS will under clock the cpu to FSB 100 x whatever the multiplier is. I can set in BIOS as high as 272 mhz and a multiplier of 12.5/13.5 stable for gaming .  But how come Wcupid reports the FSB as being 142.34 when its obviously set in BIOS to 272 .........Is that just the CPU FSB multiplier or the actual system FSB ? One would think that if you set the FSB in BIOS to 166 that it should report the FSb as being 166 mhz ........266 in bios should be 266 FSb for system should it not?? .
Anyway the default ghz speed for this CPu is 1.591 GHZ at 266 FSb mhz set in BIOS. But i use the 12.5/13.5/ multiplier which makes it 1730 GHZ CPU speed and reports cpu as XP 2000 + in post info. Now i can go up in increments of 1 in BIOS FSb all the way to 274 ..anything higher is unstable. But i thought this moboard could be overclocked to a 266 mhz FSb . Wcupid shows it as 142.34 right now and the multiplier in BIOS is 12.5/13.5x and the FSB in bios is set to 272 i beleive . Maybe im dumb but can someone explain how this can be.

Sure i do ....If what you say is true ...Because AMi BIOS has a setting for FSB in BIOS which mine is set to 270 MHZ. Im a veteran and i have built CPUs so overclocking is not the issue. The issue is the amount of MHZ i can set in bios that does not equal up to what it should in Wcupid. Please re read my post and you will see what im talking about or go into AMI bIOS ver 1.0 if you are able to and see what im talking about. I can reach 276 in that setting (max with this bios version is 280) but the multiplier has to be dropped to 11.5 to gain stabability. Id rather have a lower 270 setting and higher multiplier just because its stable and is not overheating . I want to know why i cant set that in BIOS to max setting (280) . CPU wont boot if i raise it past 276 at 11.5 multiplying.
With the BIOS setting at 270 and the multiplier at 12.5/13.5 the following info is taken from Wcupid screen
    Internal clock 1779 ghz
    System BUS 284.68
    System clock 142.34 (143)
    Multiplier 12.5
Im used to AOPEN jumper setting boards to overclock .
