To expand the ammount of hardrive space my power mac g4 can actually use.
I already had a partition on my hardrive running os x leopard.
when i ran the rig back up i got the missing hardrive icon at boot
any ideas???

Thanks for clarifying.
As much as I enjoy getting Helpfuls or Correct Answers when deservered, I feel really bad getting them when somebody else deserved them, especially so when japamac is involved, he deserves far more rewards than he gets & knows far more than I do.
As I recall this situation, I felt it'd be hours before he was backonline to answer the question & thought I'd try to help out.
I did NOT check out his links nor know what they were about, as I prefer Links that show the actual http path myself.
There was no intention of swiping any points or glory, only wishing to get help out as soon as possible.

  • Ultra ATA 133/100 IDE RAID PCI Controller Card, how to install?

I have a 200 gig Maxtor hard drive in my G4 but I am only getting to use128 gigs. So I got the above card and installed it in one of the empty PC slots. But I can't figure out just how to properly make the connection. When I the drive to either the black or blue connector on the card my computer does not see it at all. The drive does not show up in System Profiler or in Disk Utilities.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you, Peter

Can you use a hard drive that has an ultra ATA 133 interface in a G4 MDD 1.0 Ghz computer? The specs for my computer state that only ATA 100 and ATA 60 are supported. What happens if you put an ATA 133 in a ATA 100 slot or an ATA 100 in an ATA 60 slot?

  • Should I upgrade the RAM, the Processor, and add an ATA/133 card?!

    Hello!
I have a few more questions...
I only have 2 internal drives...
(one 300GB which is the main one that runs the applications and one 60Gb used as extra storage mainly for my video projects)
Do I need an ATA/133 PCI controller card for them?
will it really be worth it?
(meaning will it actually make a difference in speed or not?)
or do you only need one of those cards if you have 3 or 4 drives?
    also,
would adding more RAM (up to the 2.0 GB limit)
(my comp is currently at 1.25 GB)
    make a huge difference?
    and the processor...
if i upgrade it to the 1.8 GHz
    (it's currently at 867 MHz)
will it be a major improvement?
i guess I'm asking if i would benefit in upgrading
    everything:
    the RAM,
    the processor,
and adding an ATA/133 PCI controller card
or would just upgrading/adding one or two of these be suffice?
I'm seriously looking into upgrading my comp but I want to know
what benefits me and what won't really make a difference

    p.s.
I know I posted this somewhere earlier,
but I'm just so anxious :/
I've been looking at so much information that my head feels like it's going to explode!

    Hi-
You don't need a controller card.
If you keep your main drive(s) on the ATA/100 bus (rear carrier), and add (if you like) up to two drives to the ATA/66 (forward carrier) bus, for storage, archives, etc., you will have fine performance from all drives.
If you are going to add a drive, I would add a larger drive to the ATA/100 bus, and move the smaller (60gb) to the ATA/66 position, relegated to storage. Your graphics work (is it?) will then run well on the two drives on the ATA/100 bus.
In a G4, running with maximum RAM (2gb) is always a good performance move, and helps reduce the "spinning beachball", especially with large graphics files. As for "huge difference", not as such, but, RAM is one of the cheapest (especially now) performance buys that can be had, and more RAM is always better than less.
Upgrading to dual 1.8ghz processors would be a "Wow!" type of upgrade, compared to the current dual 867mhz processors. Be advised, that processor upgrades require that you be able to boot to OS 9 prior to installing the processor upgrade. This is to apply necessary "patches" to allow the system to use the new processors. If you don't still have a boot-able OS 9 installed on your machine, you will need to have that ability prior to a processor upgrade.
Another processor upgrade option, would be to change your processors to dual 1.25 or 1.42mhz processors from another MDD. The difference from a 11.25 dual processor, and the dual 1.8, is really between 10-15% increase in performance, with the 1.25mhz providing about 20-25% increase over the dual 867mhz processors. The main problem with this approach, is that there are some modifications that must be made, which aren't the average "do it yourself" type of work.
In the end, though, you may want to take the upgrade money, $600+, sell the MDD, $300+, and put the money on a new Mac. Don't get me wrong, I like upgrades, but it is as much to tinker, as it is to boost performance. And, at the end of the day, I don't need a new Mac. If you don't, either, you will be happy with the upgrades.

  • Speed: ATA/66 vs. ATA/133

I currently have 4 HDs in my MDD: the original IBM drive that came in the computer is ATA/100, and the other 3 (all Maxtors) are rated as ATA/133. Unfortunately, one of these ATA/133 drives sits in the MDDs ATA/100 bay (along with the IBM), and the other 2 are in the ATA/66 bay. I'm thinking of getting a Sonnet ATA/133 PCI card, and running all of the drives from it. Of course Sonnet says I'll see a huge increase in speed, but they're trying to sell me a card. What is the real speed difference between ATA/66, ATA/100, and ATA/133? Is it worth 100 bucks?
    Dual 1.0 GHz MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.75GB, 4x Superdrive, Radeon 9600

    Hi
I expect you'd see some speed increase although not huge. As far as I'm aware there's little real difference between ATA/100 and ATA/133, as the internal transfer rate of all ATA drives is less than 100MBps. There may be some real difference between ATA/66 and ATA/100, although it will still be less than the theoretical maximum of 100MBps.
One of the performance hits using ATA drives is due to two drives sharing the same channel and contending for bandwidth. If you did buy a PCI card, it may be better to run two drives off the card (each one it's own channel/ribbon cable) and two drives directly off the logic board (one on the ATA/66 bus and one on the ATA/100 bus). It partly depends on what you use the drives for though and how often you use both drives on the same bus simultaneously (copying from one to the other etc).

ATA133 is backward supported in an MDD, it can run off either the up front ATA66 controller or the rear ATA100 controller.
do you have any other HD's other than the main 80GB boot drive?
is your plan is to replace the 80GB boot drive with the 400GB or just to add on the 400GB as a 2nd drive?
your MDD should see the 400GB drive without extra cards or add ons. Just do not be suprised when your new 400GB HD formats to something like 360GB or 375GB...
and also when you do get your new HD, make sure you set the jumpers to Cable Select. It normally works easier than the good old Master and Slave routine as with older models.
You might want to try and check out www.xlr8yourmac.com. they have a Drive Compatibility Database. you enter in your Mac's basic info and and the HD spec info and if someone has use the model Seagate you listed before you can read what they thought of it.

  • Help requested with 645 Ultra-C with a PCI ATA/133 card fitted

I'm new here, so please bear with me if this plea for help is short of info :-
I built my PC 5 years ago, using a 645 Ultra-C board ( MS-6547 2.00 ) and have had no problems since - till now.
I recently installed a PCI ATA/133 card, mainly to be able to add 2 additional hard drives.  It installed ok and the 2 extra drives are recognised correctly on the card's primary channel as is a DVD device on the secondary channel.
However, on initial booting, the card is interrogated to determine what devices are connected to it and then there is a delay of up to 2 minutes ( it feels like forever ) while BootMagic is being searched for/loaded.
It makes no difference if I swap the 2 drives and the dvd over or remove the dvd drive.
The bios ( AMI 07.00T 12/20/01 )  is correctly setup to boot from floppy first, then HDD1 ( connected to the mainboard's primary channel) and 'try other boot devices' is disabled.
I have no wish to boot from the extra drives, so is there any way of avoiding the boot system from looking there first ?   Is there any other bios settings to consider ?
I'd be grateful for any hints/help.
    Thanks.

    Yes,
Go into bios and set boot sequence
Also go into pci controller bios, and set no boot
It's usually CRTL+A or CRTL+M keys on keyboard............
Controller cards will be main boot target, unless told
I have got the boot sequence set correctly - but I can see no sign of a pci controller bios option.  Cntrl A  or Cntrl M  have no effect.  Maybe the 645 bios doesnt offer those options.
I have never updated the bios - being of the 'if it aint broke dont change it' school of thought, so I may need to look at this area, now.
I'll be posting a question here about live update very soon - basically 'is it the best way to update the bios ?'
Thanks for your help so far

  • Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board~ Is it worth it???

I was considering installing a Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter Board to run my ultra ATA devices.
Is it worth the trouble or would it bog my system down for a small increase in transfer rate????
    Thanks
    DD

I've got two IDE hard drives that have the converter board that plugs into SATA on my mobo. I didn't see that much of a performance gain until I went to RAID. I had IDE RAID and it worked alright. When I put the adapters on, the speed increased by at least double. I would say this is due to a more refined RAID controller, though, but it definately wouldn't hurt your performance any.

  • Ultra ATA in IDE 3 spot work?

Hi I want to use the ultra ata in ide 3 but it never recognizes it.....what can I do to make sure it does. I have two drives connected master and slave to the ide.

    Hi
Is Bios set up correctly, I think IDE3 is controlled by the Promise controller that runs SER1 &2, it is in Intergrated peripherals- onboard PCI controller - P20378 - set it to Raid or SATA, whichever you use.
What other IDE drives have you on IDE1 and IDE2?
Are the PATA and SATA controllers enabled?
Does the Promise post page show your HDD?
Is there any sign of it in 'MY Computer'- Search - Disk management.?
    Cheers

  • IDE...ATA...Serial ATA...Ultra ATA.....Mega ATA .... YIKES!!

IDE...ATA... Serial ATA... Ultra ATA..... Mega ATA .... YIKES !!!!
Which one do I need for my Tibook DVI ?
I gotta order something quick to save my (computing) existence and am not seeing consistently the same terminology in ads. Some say one, some say t'other.
For instance, I get that a lot of people are happy with the Toshiba 7K60 unit and on the Tosh. site it says "ATA-6 hard disk drive".
But I can get a great price on the Toshiba 7K100 - which ostensibly would seem to be a beefier choice - and on the same site it says " Supports both Parallel & Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s interfaces"
Is this one and the same thing ?
What do I have to stay away from ?
Many thanks and à bientôt !

As far as I can see the difference between those drives is slim 12.5mm or ultra slim 9.5mm height. (Are you sure there not Hitachi?) I'm 95% sure the TiBooks will take the 12.5mm drives.I recommend looking in Apple System Profile to see exactly what model you currently have installed and then find one with the same dimensions.

  • PCI ATA 133 RAID Card VS. PCI ATA 133 Controller Card

    Hello,
I just bought a 300gb HD to put into my QS. I know I need to add another ATA card, but I noticed in stores there is a PCI ATA 133 RAID and a PCI ATA 133 Controller card.
What is the difference? The ATA 133 Raid card I saw is considerably cheaper. Can I use it to run my 300Gb drive as my startup drive (iDVD issues!)?
    Thanks for your help.

Additional question: I have seen that there are a number of issues with SATA II drives in the early G5. Can you recommend a drive in the 500 GB range that would work well in the Dual 1.8 GHz? A SATA II would be a good option for the future... Thanks!

  • Will a HDD Ultra ATA 100 work in a MacBook?

I'm planning to replace the HDD with a 120 GB. The one I like is the Western Digital WD1200VE 5400 8MB Ultra ATA. Now I'm not sure will it work? Is Ultra ATA compatible to S-ATA?

No… you need an SATA version of the drive.

  • How do I setup 1 serial ata hdd + 1 ide hdd + two optical drives?

    Hello,
I'm new with MSI Boards. I'm unable to get everything recognized by the BIOS. Can someone please explain me how should I setup the configuration and were and what should I connect to what connector or slot.
I'll really appreaciate your help due that I have been trying for 1 week and I can't figure how to put it. Thanks

    Connect the SATA to serial1
Connect the optical drive that you'll be running the XP setup disk from to IDE2
Don't connect any other drives yet.
    In Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config:
    Native mode
    PATA only
    Keep SATA enabled-Yes
    PATA channels- Both
    configure SATA as Raid-No
    Leave other stuff alone.
    Bios>>Advanced Features>>Boot device selection:
    Set your preferred boot order.
Reboot from the XP setup CD and install XP
Power off and connect the IDE Hdd to IDE1(set jumpers for single drive)
Connect the other optical drive to IDE2(set jumpers correctly)
    Reboot.
    This should work!

  • ATA 133 is a myth!!!

SPecs; MSI KT333 Ultra MS6380E, Via chipset(VT8233A) with the last 4 in 1 Hyperion drivers(primary ide drivers UDMA6),win xp sp1 updated...
now the good part; Maxtor 80gig ATA 133 2mb cache...achieving a whopping 20mb/s  what is wrong??? i got a new High quality round cable ATA 133(Startech)my hard drive is all alone with this cable e.g. no cd-rom attach to it....and still 20mb/s...is there a way to know if my bios is set properly(step by step) what to enable and what to disable....i'm so tired...i'm on this for 3 days now...i know i'll never get 100mb/s, i'll be lucky if i do 70mb/s, but plz tell me i can make it to at least 50mb/s. Thanks! Oh i almost forgot...i did the power max test for the hard drive...it's ok, passed all the tests with flying colors.

The HDD has a cache which is SDRAM or DDR RAM (very fast).
However this cache is very small (2MB or 8MB today).
The speed they reffer to in ATA133 is the speed between the controller on the board and the controller on the drive, this can reach very close to 133MB/S, but it can only happen for very short periods of time.
What is reffered to as sqeuential reads and writes (large files on a non fragmented drive) is limited to the cacheplatter speed which is significantly lower due to the mechanical nature of the drive vs electronic nature of RAM or the cache on the drive.
The benchmarks in that review are on a newly installed drive under optimal conditions, they will degrade over time as the drive is filled up and fragmented by use.
The HDD is one of the main bottlenecks in PCs, they are really not keeping up with the progress of the rest of the computer components. They are getting big enough, but not fast enough.
