Ultra ATA hard drives???

So i have a 120gb Ultra ATA hard drive so i bought a casing to make it an external HD but it would not show up in disk utility or my desktop. So i took a regular ATA HD and it worked fine. my question is does apple not support Ultra ATA or is there somthing else i need to do to get it show up?

What are the manufacturer's recommended jumper settings for the drive when installed in an enclosure?
It should work as long as the drive settings are correct and the enclosure is getting enough juice - either through the ports or a power adapter.

I bought a Ultra ATA Hard Drive for my Mac and the connections are different. I looked up online that you can buy an adapter to switch it over to a Mac compatible connection. Will this work fine and be just as good as if it was normally this connection? Thank you very much.

... or go out and now buy FW case - you still need backups - and make sure to get an SATA drive, one that doesn't have Spread Spectrum Clocking enabled (such as Seagate 7200.9) when looking.
Maxtor DM10 or MaxLine III; Hitachi T7K250 or 7K500; WD Raptor.
I think there was something about the WD400 mentioned on

  • Newly installed Ultra ATA hard drive not showing up anywhere-HELP!

Just installed (I thought) a 300 GB hard drive on top of my factory installed 40GB. Tried it once as the master and then as the slave. Still, it doesn't show up in disk utility so I can format it. I do not have it set for cable select.
Any help would be appreciated because I couldn't find a similar question in the past posts. Thank you!! ")

I thought it was a Sony but apparently only my CD drive is - I can't tell if it is a WD! Here's are the specs on it... Does that model # tell you anything about it?
    ST340016A:
    Capacity: 38.18 GB
    Model: ST340016A
    Revision: 5.21
    Serial Number: 3HS5SPFX
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: No
    BSD Name: disk0
    Protocol: ATA
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    OS9 Drivers: Yes
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
Also, the instructions I have don't tell me how to set up the old HD as master w/slave present. Currently, I have no jumper in the new HD and the old HD has a jumper in the master/single drive spot.
The instructions are more geared to a Windows PC of course. In the troubleshooting section is does talk about having to put a (capacity limiting) jumper on the pins all the way to the right for computers that do not suport high-capacity drives.
Now that I've had some sleep I'm going to get back down there and see if I can't refigure my connector situation.
BTW-yes, I figured out too late that I would not be able to use all of the GB on this drive. This is a learning process for me as I'm a busy mom of 3 boys-I generally figure things out in my "spare" time. Ha, ha! I so love .Mac and the support-what a lifesaver!
I HAD been wondering how difficult it would be to install the controller card. Is that something I can do down the road assuming I actually get my new HD showing up?
    Thanks!

  • 500GB WD Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive in G4 MDD?

    Hey Guys!
I could probably figure this out if I were at home with the machine, but it's been a long time since I upgraded anything and I can't recall exactly what's compatible. I'd like to order today if I can while I'm thinking about it.
Basically, all my HDDs in my entire house are full (2 in G4, MBP, External, PS3, DVR)!
I want to spend as little as possible so I'm thinking of throwing a 500GB WD Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive in the G4, and moving one of the HDDs in it now to the lower ATA/66 slot. I can then move my music and iphot library to this ATA/66 drive and use the 500GB as the main OS drive and my 120GB, or whatever is there, as a media drive for my video editing and what not.
Anyone know any reason this won't work?
Is Ultra ATA/100 compatible in a pretty stock G4 MDD?
What's this limitation I've been hearing about on drive size; how do I make sure I'd free of it?
Will a drive on the ATA/66 be fast enough for my iTunes/iPhoto libraries, and maybe archiving of old FCP projects? I'd liek to get the external clear and use it to back everything up.
    Thanks!

    I've come across some issues.
I have a Pioneer DVR-110D which needs ATA-66 to function at its highest capacity. So, I have that and the original super drive connected via ATA-66. I knwo the SuperDrive only needs to be connected ATA-33 though.
The problem I'm running into is a cable to connect the HDD in the lower tray and the DVR-110D both ATA-66, and then one to connect the SuperDrive ATA-33.
How much of a performance hit would I take to connect the HDD with my music and pictures on it ATA-33. Then I'll probably also use it for archiving or something, I'm not sure yet. Is this feasible, or would it be to dreadfully slow?
Can I turn the IDE cable around so the two connectors closest to each other are connected to the motherboard and the HDD, and the other connector connected to the DVR-110D. Also, what risk is there in the cable touching the motherboard?
If I can do this and don't have to run the cable between the drives and the sidewall (where the factory placement is) I might be able to get them both on ATA-66.
Also, I removed my processor heat sink to blow out any dust that may be under there, and I noticed a gel or something on top of the processors where they touch the heat sink. I don't need to put some more on or anything before I put it back together do I? It's not going to overheat or something now that I took it apart is it?
Thanks a ton! I'm running into more problems than I anticipated.

    ===========
Meanwhile my ipod has all my music and podcasts up till a month ago.  What will I lose if I put my external drive music back on?

    Hi Perilman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.

  • Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter

I would like to install a second hard drive in my T61. I saw a thread that advised I can do this by purchasing a "Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter". The thread also had a link where one can be purchased. However, the page displayed by the link said that the product was unavailable. Do I have any other options for installing a second hard drive? Will this adapter become available for purchase in the future? I want to install solaris or Linux on the second drive and boot from it, I assume this is possible. Thanks.

according to the Lenovo website, yes it is the right model for the T61.

  • What's the difference between the ATA hard drive and SSD in MBP?

I'm looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and am unsure of the real differences between the ATA hard drives available and the SSDs.  How would each affect my new computer? I realize many people suggest not buying these extra things through Apple for economical reasons, but lets just say I did, which would be the better option?

You don't have to give up anything for memory, that is handled by the ram...the amount of storage available in SSD is less than with a Hard Drive in large part because of the cost.  You gain speed but have to be content for now with less storage space.
Of course, you could buy an external hard drive to use for bulk storage and backups, always strongly recommended.  Some good drives are available from the Mac specialists at OWC, http://www.macsales.com
Those will not be as fast as the SSD but are great for letting Time Machine backup your internal storage and for use as a place to store bulk things like music or photos or videos, etc.

  • My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked?

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks
    Al Florez

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

  • 7200rpm serial ata hard drive

    hey guys
i am trying to get a new hard drive for my macbook pro 15'
does anybody know any 2.5' 7200rpm serial ata hard drive out there?
    or recommand any type, brand?
    thanks

I dont think one is inferior over the other. I know someone with a hitachi and it is doing quite well, no problems at all.
The upgrade from a 5400rpm to a 7200rpm is drastically noticeable. That and RAM are the most noticeable updates that will increase performance.
You might also want to look into the new hybrid hardrives that are almost on the market:

  • Installing 500Gig ata hard drive

Hi,I'm going to install a 500gig ata hard drive to go along with my 250gig ata drive. The 250gig is on a 133 controller card that will support 4 drives. My question is:do i format the drive first or can i just clone the 250 to 500 with super duper.

    Hi-
Hard drives add a bit of heat to the interior of the tower, so a PCI slot fan would probably be a wise investment.
Although the PSU would probably be OK, the other upgrades may not appreciate additional heat without additional cooling.
Getting some of the heat out before it all goes through the PSU will help keep the power production steady.
Removing some of the heat from the Radeon and the CPU upgrade with the help of PCI slot fan won't hurt either.
A PCI cooler has minimal amperage requirements, so it should not overburden the power supply.
As compared to earlier drives, late model drives do run cooler.
WD drives are some of the coolest running drives.
One might consider getting some external drives, though. Two internal drives should be plenty for OS, applications and scratch.
Putting files, music, photos, etc. on an external FW drive won't affect performance adversely, and will reduce the heat and power loading of the tower.
Make sure you have an external backup drive that can backup all of your "working" drives.
Another benefit of an external drive housing, is that you can use a SATA drive, up to 2TB capacity now, and connect by FW. This way, you get the benefits of SATA capacity, and don't have to buy a controller card.

  • Ultra ATA/66 drive in ATA/33 G4

My Gigabit Ethernet G4 power supply died. Installed replacement (ebay purchase) plugged computer in and "poof" small electrical pop and smell of smoke. Need to get machine going to copy drive. Since the power supply didn't work, I am wondering if I can remove the ATA/66 drive from this computer and install it in a Mirror Drive Door G4 which I believe is ATA/33. Will the drive run even though the speed is different or will the MDD G4 not recognize it?

    Hi-
Was that because of the jumpers?
    MDD's use Cable Select.
A drive must be jumped Cable Select, with the primary (Master) Drive on the end connector, and the secondary (Slave) drive on the middle connector.
The drive is clicking so I figure it is dead, but still the computer should have booted from the other drive.
A severely damaged drive may prevent a machine from booting.
Anyway, my next question, is anything recoverable from a clicking drive? Outrageous cost aside, can a recovery service actually salvage anything?
    Maybe (with software) and Yes.
    Try Data Rescue II.
About ten years ago I had Avid drives periodically go out and make noise but I could get them spinning or just bang them on the desk a few times and they would boot and work long enough to get the data off.
There is always the freezer trick:

  • Feedback on Targus ultra-slim hard drive

I have an 80 GB hard drive on my PBook but use only approximately 30 GBs. and that figure, of course, includes all contents of the operating system. At home (in Canada), I have an 80 GB. LaCie external hard drive, enabling me to back up on a regular basis for safety purposes.
We spend most of the winter months in Northern California and the O.S. instal disks always come with us. The remainder of the info is backed up on DVD-RW's.....a process I find to be very time-consuming. I have therefore been thinking of a very portable hard drive made by Targus, Ultra-Slim Pocket Model ADH01US 40GB, which weighs only 3.5 ozs. and fits in a shirt pocket and this would be perfect for our needs.
I would be extremely interested in any feedback—pros and cons—if anyone has any experience with this hard drive.
    As always....thanx in advance!!
    PowerBook G4, 768 RAM, 80 GB H.D.   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I was just looking around for some reviews on the drive, but I couldn't find anything comprehensive. I did come across a brief Cnet review here, which mentioned a few pros, cons, and alternatives. I've never heard of the drive before so I really can't give any advice on it aside from the fact that I think it looks nice and small (don't misplace it!). Good luck!

  • Iomega Ultra Max Hard Drive does not mount

It worked splendidly for many months, but suddenly my Ultra Max will no longer mount on my iMac G5 with OS X 10.4.11, nor on my old iBook or new iBookPro. It is not listed in Finder.
In its final few weeks it was first listed in finder and would work for half an hour or so and then suddenly disconnect out of the blue. But now it is, apparently, even worse.
I went to the iomega support page, followed the suggested procedure of clicking the Apple icon, then About this mac, and finally found the Ultra Max listed under the FireWire arrow. There it lists as file system HFS+. Presumably I therefore do not have to (re-)format the hard drive.
    What could it be?

There is indeed something wonky with those models (I have the 750 GB one). I am in the process of having it fixed/replaced now, but here is an interesting bit of news:
    - Apple refers me to Iomega for the return and service
    - Iomega accepts the case and will replace the unit
    - I pack and ship the unit, which costs me around 60 EUR (from Norway to The Netherlands, including customs-processing fee)
    - Iomega informs me they do not cover shipping
    - Apple Store informs me that they will not cover shipping, since the product (in their world) is out of warranty (which it isn't)
Now - what do I do about those 60 EUR I paid for shipping the unit? If this was any other Norwegian internet computer store, they would have covered the shipping for me -- it is the LAW, they have to -- since the product is under warranty. But, since Apple tells me "No, Iomega handles their own support, you have to talk to them" I had to, and when they don't want to pay for the shipping.. well.. what do I do? I could have bought a new (and bigger) drive for the cost of just returning the unit for repairs.
I am aware that the Apple Store continously is hammered for being "customer alienating", but I have never had such an dissapointing experience as a consumer. Ever.

  • How to put 66 ATA motherboard and 100 ATA hard drive together????

    I have PB Ti 400MHz.
And I have just bought new Hard drive Seagate 80GB 7200RPM, and it works at 100 ATA and my motheboard is 66 ATA is there anyway to put these two together????
    Alex Minaev

The ATA-100 harddisk should just slow down and match the ATA-66 bus on your PBs motherboard. I didn;t experience any issues putting a ATA100 drive in my iBook SE 466 (ATA33?) or the iMac DV (ATA33?) mrtotes
