Ultra SCSI devices on MBP?

IS there a way to hook up external UltraWide SCSI VXA-320 tape drive to MacBookPro?
Either as ExpressCard? or some kind of an adapter?
USB?
Firewire?
Derek

The speed of SCSI adapters is very slow.
I think you're confusing speeds.
Ignoring the issue of how to interface a SCSI drive to a MBP, anything faster than Ultra 2 Wide SCSI has throughput at 80 MB/s or better - that's megabytes per second, not the 400 megabits per second of FireWire 400. (Remember, MB/s = (Mb/s / 8), so FireWire 400 delivers top throughput of just 50 MB/s.)
Ultra 3 SCSI or better has a throughput of 160 megabytes per second, faster than even FireWire 800's 800 megabits per second (which would be only 100 MB/s.)
This is why systems using Fiber Channel are so popular in server farms, as it delivers data at speeds of up to 400 MB/s, or 4x faster than FW800.
This is also why eSATA is starting to gain traction as a way to attach an external drive, as it communicates with drives at a maximum speed of 2400 Mb/s, or some 3x faster than FW800 (but still slower than Fiber Channel or Ultra SCSI 320.)
There's a really nice chart outlining this here.
Just keeping the discussion honest.

  • Help - how can I convert G5's SATA power to 4-pin for an Ultra SCSI?

I am trying to put an Ultra SCSI hard drive in an G5. For *some reason* this is very, very hard to do. I have bought a compatible ATTO PCI card that is working fine in the slot. I can connect the data cable from the SCSI card to the drive installed in the G5 (although it was hard snaking it through). The problem is power. What I need is an adapter that will convert the end of the SATA power connector into a 4 pin female for the drive side. This product (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/SATAPA/
) looks right, but seems to be the wrong sex -- the 4 pin part is certainly the wrong sex (since the drive is male, the adapter must be female), and I can't tell if the SATA part will fit (looks like it's also the wrong sex). The picture of what I am trying to do is here:
    http://flickr.com/photos/ppayne/159005320/
Can you please help me here? I can't believe that people using a special (high performance in my case) drive with a g5 is something no one has ever tried to do. I know SATA is the future but I want to use my special hard drive (15,000 rpm Ultra SCSI) with my server.
So once again, I am looking for an adapter that will be male SATA power on one end, and female 4 pin on the other end. If anyone could help that would be great.

Like Timotheus D said, don't over think it, get a y-splitter to go off the power for your super drive, like: http://www.directron.com/cbl-y.html

Might be hard to find, but long ago there were a couple of Firewire<->SCSI adapters, if you have USB2 those might be available also...

I think Belkin made one also.
Might be far cheaper to buy an old Mac or even PC with SCSI.

  • SCSI device and Windows 2008 Guest OS HVM

    Hi all,
customer installed Windows 2008 as a guest HVM on Oracle VM. They can't see external SCSI storage if the vm.cfg file consists of following records:
    'phy:/dev/sdd,ioemu:sdc,w',
    'phy:/dev/sde,ioemu:sdd,w',
    'phy:/dev/sdf,ioemu:sde,w',
    'phy:/dev/sdg,ioemu:sdf,w',
    but if we configure
    'phy:/dev/sdd,ioemu:hdc,w',
    'phy:/dev/sde,ioemu:hdd,w',
    'phy:/dev/sdf,ioemu:hde,w',
    'phy:/dev/sdg,ioemu:hdf,w',
we can see hdc and hdd devices ( there is limit for hd devices, 4 devices per guest).
How we can make scsi devices available for windows guest OS??????
    Regards
    Rostislav

    Hi,
with hdX this is o.k. See the restrictions of the VM Manager Release Notes:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/doc.22/e15440/toc.htm
2.20 Hard Disk Limit in Virtual Machines
A hardware virtualized machine may have up to four IDE disks (including CD-ROM and shared virtual disks), and seven SCSI disks.
However why sdX is not picked is another question. It should be able to pick sda to sdg.
Note 1070793.1: Resource Limitations On Oracle VM Server Guest O/S
Could you try without the ioemu: ?
Another option could be to install the PVM drivers for Windows. Then you can specify the devices as xvd.

I use Compressor 4 to convert a bunch of videos...
Unfortunately the preset "HD for Apple Devices (10 Mbps)" is not working - result = "Failed"

I've found the problem... it depends on the file name. The file name was

  • Re-Upload Data from my OneTouch Ultra 2 device

    Hi,
I have uploaded 500+ BG readings from my OneTouch Ultra 2 device, however the readings were uploaded using the incorrect unit. I have Deleted all the records but, set the upload to use the correct unit but I can only upload new
readings and not the other 500 readings.
How can I reset to import All and not only new readings?
    Regards

    Hi,
I am assuming you are using HealthVault Connection Center (HVCC) to upload your data. HVCC stores information in HealthVault to help it prevent duplicates. Unfortunately, if you upload items to HealthVault, and then delete them, there is not a great way
to re-upload the items easily. We are aware of this limitation and apologize for the difficulty. Again, there are no easy ways to accomplish this, but there is an advanced way that I will describe below.
These instructions allow you to delete HVCC sync information on your PC and in HealthVault, which allows you to re-upload items:
    1. Uninstall HealthVault Connection Center from your PC using Add/Remove Programs
    2. Sign in to HealthVault at www.healthvault.com
    3. Click Health information in the left navigation bar
    4. Click Application-Specific Information
    5. Delete the items that are called "SyncMetadata" Note: if you have multiple devices, deleting these items could also cause other devices to upload duplicate items using HVCC. If you have only one device, then that isn't a problem.
    6. Install HVCC (https://www.healthvault.com/connection-center/)
    7. Follow the steps in HVCC to upload data from your device. It will re-upload any items on your device.

  • Scsi device connection

    Hi!
I has driver for scsi device, which is original sst driver with
addition of some ioctls for my device. Application in user mode
sends ioctls to driver. When I disconnect my device and then
connect it again, I get the following message:
    host1 unix: WARNING: /pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@3/my_driver_name@7d,0 (sst45)
host1 Error for Command: <undecoded cmd 0x1c> Error Level :Fatal
I have the same messages when disconnecting scsi disks.
    What can it be ?
    Thank you for help
    Dany

Okay - thanks very much. I already got a cheap one with silicone image chipset, but now I'm having trouble booting it.
With hard disks on the motherboard IDE (I'll call it IDE1) and optical drives on the card, the disk won't boot, either giving a Disk Boot Failure, or VMI hangup.
With the hard disks on the card and optical drives on IDE1, the computer will boot past grub, but then it says it can't find /dev/sda2 and dies.
I booted a Slax CD, and the drives when on the card are mounted as sdex and sdfx. But then grub will not boot no matter what I change the boot line to. I tried everything from sdax to sdfx, it just can't see the partition.
I can boot the computer if I only hook up the drives to the IDE channel and leave off the optical drives. But obviously that is not really useful and defeats the purpose for which I bought the card. :-p I also somehow had everything working at one point with disks on IDE1 and opticals on the card (except the opticals wouldn't boot, which I was trying to fix) but somehow I can't get that back. I've tried every configuration I can think of, cleared the CMOS, reset everything, still it doesn't work. As soon as I plug in the optical drives to the card, it just hangs at that VMI error.
Any advice before I give up on this motherboard and try a better one?
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
N/M - I got it. I just had to boot the fallback image and then rebuild the kernel.  Now I have the drive on the card booting fine, and it also boots from optical.

  • SC11Xe not scanning or finding scsi devices

    Hi,
Having recently purchased a HP SC11Xe scsi card for a HP ML110 G7, I am having no luck getting it to scan for SCSI devices.
I have tried 3 different tape drives (Ultrium 920 & 960 Tape drives internally) and a Ultium 460 External.  I have tried different cables to these tape drives as well but with no joy.
Windows has detected the card and installed drivers successfully, but since the card wont see any devices during POST, Windows doesnt stand a chance of seeing any of this hardware.
The card is running the latest Firmware (5.05.21.00)
    cheers

As these are the consumer forums, I would recommend that you post this in the HP Enterprise Support Forums for better coverage.
You can access the enterprise support forums at the following link.

  • G4 lost its SCSI devices in 10.3.9

Help! I'm trapped in system ten and can't use my SCSI devices!
Mac blue-and-white G4, 400hz running 9.2.2 and 10.3.9. 896 SDRAM. Two internal drives. I worked for years in 9, with an Apple 17" CRT, scanning Medium Format film on a Minolta Dimage Scan Multi II, with a LaCie CD burner on a very short SCSI chain connected to an Adaptec Power Domain 2930cu. I only restarted in 10 on the 120GB second drive to use Photoshop CS and store the large image files.
When my 17" CRT began to give up the ghost (showing a narrow field), I added a used Apple 20" studio display, adding a Radeon 9200 ATI graphics accelerator (128mb) to run it. It runs fine on 10.3.9. It's also supposed to run on 9.2.2, but it screen-freezes immediately, even with all the extensions shut off.
So, I'm trapped in 10, with classic, and neither the old system 9 scanner software (running now in Classic) or new system 10 minolta scanner software can find the scanner, though the system profiler identifies the whole SCSI chain just fine. Toast, running in Classic, can't find the CD burner, either.
My aerial-photography business (www.glsweetnam.com/photolist.html) requires a scanner. The only solutions I can think of are:
    - to buy a scanner and a CD burner that don't require SCSI (Nikon Coolscan 9000 or such, $ ouch $)
    - find some way to get the 20" display to run on 9.2.2, which easily found my scanner. Any ideas? I don't mind restarting in 9 for scanning sessions.
    - find some way to get 10.3.9 to recognize my SCSI chain. Minolta's downloaded system 10 software can't find its scanner. I suppose I should get a system 10 version of Toast and see if it can find the CD burner to be sure it's not just a problem with Minolta's software.
I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have.

  • Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1. Hyper-V Windows 2012 R2 Preview

    Hello,
I am new to Hyper-V. I installed Windows Server 2012 R2  Preview on a physical server and installed Hyper-V role on it.
I am trying to install Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V as a guest OS.
From Hyper-V manager, I created a VM and supplied 2008 R2 ISO as a boot device.
Windows 2008 R2 ISO is bootable. I have used the same ISO on VMware and it works.
I connected the VM and powered on, but OS instalaltion doesn't start.
I get error " Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1." Below is th screen capture.
How to fix this problem ?
How do I go to Hyper-v VM BIOS settings ?
How do I change the boot sequence for Hyper-V VM ?
    Thanks ! Jayawardhane

I was getting the same error but with WINDOWS 2012 STD Edition.
My case: I was trying to use the existing WINDOWS 2012 VHDX with Generation 2 Virtual Machine, as I wanted to make use of 'Virtual Hard Disk Sharing' feature which is only supported on SCSI Controller. But during boot, it looked for UEFI code, whereas
I had created VHDX using BIOS boot partition. So I guess, In order to use 'VHD Sharing' feature, I have to convert boot partition to GPT which supports UEFI.
If I use the Generation 1 virtual machine, and then change the VHDX Controller from IDE to SCSI from settings, I see the option 'VHD Sharing' getting enabled, but unfortunately the Generation 1 BIOS does not have support for SCSI only IDE.

  • KT7 Master 6347-S SCSI Device Drivers?

I just purchased a MSI KT7 Master 6347 from an online dealer and when I got ready to installed the device drivers from the MSI CD found that the CD was 'Sealed[Melted?]' to the plastic storage sleeve.
I have been able to find most of the drivers for this board online [but other than the BIOS upgrade had to go off site for the drives {why is that MSI?}]..
But I am unsure of which SCSI drivers that I need for Win'98SE??

  • KT4 Ultra - SCSI boot problem

    Hi,
I have installed a Tekram DC390U2W LVD SCSI adapter on my KT4 Ultra. My problem is that I cannot select any of the five connected SCSI disks as a boot device in the BIOS (BBS-n), nor can I select 'Legacy SCSI' as a boot device, they simply don't exist as options in the Boot Sequence menu. I've used this card (and were able to boot) without problem using a MSI KT266 motherboard, so I don't think the problem is the SCSI adapter. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I've disabled all motherboard options (Serial ATA Raid/1394/USB 2.0/GBLAN/Audio controllers), remove all PCI cards exept the Tekram card and tried it in all PCI slots without success. Also tried to assign different IRQs to the SCSI card in the BIOS. Tekram support responded that the SCSI card is fully PnP/BBS/PCI 2.1 specification compliant and they're unaware of any KT400 issues. There are issues (and work arounds) with this SCSI card when using it on motherboards with an on-board SCSI controller and older Award BIOS versions, but that's not applicable here.
Anyone out there using this SCSI card and motherboard got this combination to work as intended?
