Ultra Slim Bay Hard Drive - Formatting

T61p w/ a new ATA Hard drive.  Operating system=Windows Vista.  How do I format this hard drive?  Right now my back up wizard is not recognizing the drive even though my device manager see the device. Thx.

Use "safely remove devices" or Easy Eject before removing an ultrabay device.
Give windows a few seconds to complete the dismount before inserting the new device
A new hdd will need to be formatted - use Disk Management (right click My Computer - select Manage)
If a HDD was already in a machine and had a HDD password set it will not be detected if you swap it in hot.  You have to cold boot and enter the password when prompted.  If you remove the HDD password using BIOS setup then it will function when hot-swapped.

  • T61P Ultra Slim bay hard drive issues

    Hi,
I have a new T61P with an additional hard drive in the Ultra Slim bay.
I can safely pull out the old drive or DVD, plug is the another drive - nothing happens!!  I thought this hard drive is suppose to be Plug-N-Play.
Is there any settings / configurations I need to do?  What is the best setting to format that drive?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Portege M700 - Ultra Slim Bay

In the User Guide, in the equipment checklist section, it says 'Ultra Slim Bay Weight Saver (Is included with some models)'. And since i received an Ultra Slim Bay case (which is also included in some models), logically, it would also come with the Weight Saver. Because, when i remove my DVD drive to place into the Ultra Slim Bay case, there's a gaping hole left in the laptop where the DVD drive used to be. It doesn't make sense that Toshiba didn't provide the Weight Saver, does it...?
    Thanks for your help,
    Joseph

PS. This message was rejected by the system because it was profanity?! what is going on? it took me 7 tries till I decided to edit my message instead. What is wrong with the system? It was VERY frustrating and it doesn't tell you which part it wanted you to edit! poor code... fix it.

Im not a Portege M700 owner but I think Akuma is right. The dummy DVD dray is delivered only with models without DVD drive I think.
If you want it you can contact an authorized service provider. They can order all Toshiba parts.
Or you search on the Toshiba Accessories homepage. Maybe there you will find the part number and then you can search with Google to find some online shops they are selling that part.
    Good luck!

  • Hard drive formatting problem

    Hi there,
I've been stupid and I'm looking for some advice.  What happened was I went and tried to install Windows 8.1 on my iMac, had a problem with the installation process and whilst in the Windows installer, I ended up screwing up a partition which has ended up as free space which OSX disk utility won't let me format, delete or repartition.  It won't work either from within Mavericks or when booted from either a recovery disk or a USB drive Mavericks installer.  I've got everything backed up so a complete hard drive format is fine, in fact I already tried that, so starting from scratch might be easiest. If anybody has any ideas how I could fix this I'd be grateful.
At the moment the drive is showing four partitions, Macintosh HD is 2.5TB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s4 is 314.6MB OS Extended (Journaled), disk1s6 is 134.2MB OS Extended (Journaled) and Free Space is 499.98GB Free Space.
    Macintosh HD is working fine.
disk1s4 I'm unable to delete, merge or reformat.
disk1s6 is between a rock and a hard place, because...
Free Space is just flat out unusable.
    System is 27" iMac 3.5GHz Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3, 3.12TB Fusion Drive
Any help would be appreciated, I'll try not to screw up this time...
    Thanks,
    Kev

    Hi malevolus,
It looks like the partition map of your iMac’s fusion drive is corrupted. Fortunately since you have a backup of everything, we don’t have to worry about data loss. Reformatting of a fusion drive does require some special steps though. See this article -
Mac mini (Late 2012), iMac (Late 2012 and later): About Fusion Drive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446
    In Particular -
    Troubleshooting
The version of Disk Utility that comes with Fusion Drive is unique. Earlier versions of Disk Utility can't be used with a Fusion Drive.
If your system will not start because you see a flashing question mark or another alert:
Press the Power button and hold it down to power off your system.
Press the Power button again. After you hear the startup chime, press and hold Command-Option-R to start up to the Internet version of Mountain Lion Recovery.
A globe should appear with a "Starting Internet Recovery" message. It is now OK to release Command-Option-R.
A progress bar should appear and Internet Recovery should start and ask you to select a language.
Once you select a language, click Disk Utility in the window that appears and then click Continue.
If your Fusion Drive can be fixed with Disk Utility, you'll see a Disk icon with red lettering. Click the disk icon.
A dialog box appears offering to fix the Fusion Drive (shown above). Caution: Clicking Fix will erase your Fusion Drive. If you have a Time Machine backup of your Fusion Drive Mac, see Mac 101: Time Machine for information on how to restore from a Time Machine backup once the drive has been erased.
              8.  After the process is complete, the volume will change color to black. Quit Disk Utility, click Install Mac OS X, then click Continue to reinstall OS X                         Mountain Lion.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L

  • With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac

With Time Machine I have an external hard drive formatted with Mac. The record contained files windows. How to recover?
Serious mistake: to connect a Mac to an external drive with data (important!) Windows, the warning appears: "You want to use the disk for Time Machine?" Wrong button, so in 2-3 seconds, the disk is formatted. Now Mac "sees" the disc but empty, Windows does not see it under "My Computer" but in "Disk Management" is reported as "hard core", "healthy", "GPT protective partition" Is there a way to retrieve the files? Sorry for my English Thanks

I'm having a difficult time following, I understand English isn't your native language. You may have good luck with Google Translate.

  • Hard drive format for sharing

I've trying to set up a Mac and PC network using an Airport Extreme Base Station. What hard drive format is supported by both Windows and Mac OS? I'm switching over from a PCs so most my extermal hard drives are NTFS, but it seems that Airport Extreme isn't able to share this format over the network.

I've found that many people have similar questions, but I still haven't seen the direct answer.
In particular, I want to know which format is easiest for the Airport Extreme to share over a network, which both PCs and Macs will have access.
I would like to share my iTunes library over the network, as well as DIVX films, plus I will have InDesign files that I need to work on both on the PC (running Windows 7) and Macs.

There are 2 possibilities for you:
    1. when you use it only for macs, do as Mike said,
    2. when you us it on windows also the NTFS is better than Fat32, and then you can install a NTFS driver on your Mac: either a paid driver from Paragon or a free driver from Tuxeira.
from where i can download NTFS driver on mac ?

HI, I have all the music on my ipad, but following a hard-drive format on my pc, I have lost all the music on itunes, which were cd uploads.  How do I copy the music back from my ipad to itunes on my pc ? ple help

You will need to use a third-party program, you computer's iTunes can only copy iTunes purchases back (File > Transfer Purchases, File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). There are a number of programs listed half-way down this page which you could try : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • External hard drive format for use in both OS9 and OSX

I have never use OS9. A friend of mine wants to transfer their files from an OS9 computer to an OSX computer. Is there a hard drive format that can be used on both OS9 and OSX. It would be great to be able to transfer the files over on my Firewire hard drive.
    Many thanks,
    Beaglebrain.

    Beaglebrain,
Should have added that you should check the size of your HD. OS9 won't recognise anything beyond about 190GB.

  • Does FireWire 800 see individual drives in a four bay hard drive enclosure?

I am trying to find a four bay hard drive enclosure with FireWire 800 interface, AND through this one FW800 connection my OS can see the four hard drives individually (similar to USB interface or Port Multiplier on eSATA interface). Anyone knows whether such a product exists? Thanks.

I'm not sure you fully understand how the hardware/software RAID system functions. If you create a mirrored RAID with either then you have redundancy for drive failure. This would be the case for either hardware or software arrays. If you create a striped array with hardware or software then there is no redundancy regardless of which method you use.
An enclosure failure can occur whether you use software or hardware based arrays, so the failure risks are the same. There's no reason to believe that the failure risk of the enclosure would be greater than using software. In fact it's likely that the hardware would be more reliable. As for differences between eSATA and Firewire reliability I'm not sure why your would believe one is more reliable than the other unless you have data that supports such a conclusion.
If you are overly cautious about backups (which is a good thing) then I would look for an enclosure in which you could have two separate striped arrays. Then the two striped arrays are configured into a single mirrored array. That way you have two separate backups - a main one and the mirror. This gives both drive and data redundancy. The main risk is if one drive in each array fails simultaneously. The risk of this would be fairly low I would think. Even this risk can be removed if the box supports other types of arrays than just 0, 1, and 0-1. See the following:
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs. Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?
