Ultra slow connection to NAS box via Gigabit

Hi all, I hope someone has a tip for me.
I use a Synology NAS offering both SMB and AFP protocols.
I sync all my data from my iMac and MacBook computers to this box and also access it directly, to work with photos, for example.
For some reason, accessing the box is excruciatingly slow. The box has the most current firmware. When I connect, the connection (with saved account/pwd info) takes a good 30 seconds. Navigating through directories is also really annoyingly slow.
The computers connect via Gigabit Ethernet, and I switched from using the SMB connectivity for the Macs to AFP, as SMB was slower yet. I cannot believe it is the NAS - when I connect from my wife's PC, it is as quick as I would expect - it seems something during the Mac connection is timing out?
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks!

Hi,
Which protocol do you use to access file share, CIFS or FTP?
According to your description, you cannot access NAS device via Internet Explorer 11, please reset your Internet Explorer settings to check how it works.
Also, if you are using  CIFS, can you view files in Windows Explorer directly?

  • Cannot connect to my box via XDMCP etc...

    I already have a Solaris 10 10/08 Sparc Sunblade 150 working great!!!
I just built a brand new system AMD64 x86 box and it seems to work great as well but the one thing I cannot get working like on the Sunblade is a remote desktop session (XDMCP?)... After reading many posts on this I have enabled XDMCP which seems to do nothing, Opened up network services via the netservice command I think it's called and still nothing, seems to not work.... Since the install seems to be identical to the SPARC
install I did... what do I need to do in X86 Solaris 10 to get it to work the same as the SPARC box???
    Thanks,
    Scott

I am also not able to connect to my cheapo AMD Solaris 10/8 machine. The local console gdm login works fine and I can ssh into the machine. I did choose the "secure" option when I installed and have followed the advice I found on several postings in this particular forum. I ran gdmsetup to see if XDMCP was enabled and it was.
I am trying to use vncviewer from realvnc.com to connect. Here's what I see:
main: unable to connect to host: Connection refused (111)
If I go "netstat -an |grep 177" on the Solaris box I see:
    *.177 Idle
    *.177 Idle
I am curious as to whether the pf service might be an issue since it is enabled. The ipfilter service is not enabled.

  • Connect ready nas duo via TL-WA701ND client

    Hope someone can help?
I have a Netgear Readynas Duo that I wish to connect to my wireless home broadband. When the Readynas is connected by Ethernet cable to my BT home hub 3 it works. Due to the hub being in a bedroom and the noise of the Readynas it needs to be moved. I hope to connect the Readynas to my home broadband by using a TP link WA701ND ver 1 set to client mode.
I have followed previous posts to set static Ip addresses to configure my WA701ND but get lost in trying to ensure that the Version, encryption, psk password and IP addresses all match the hub.
I would really appreciate some simple step by step guidance to enable me to make what seems to be a simple connection.
    Alan

I did not cover the client mode on my website, but if you follow the instructions for the Universal Repeater mode using my default config file, that works as an client as well.
You can then go into the setup, and change the config to client, unless you want to use it as a wireless repeater as well.
    TP-Link WA701ND
If you find that wireless access is too slow, then Powerline adapters may be a better option.

  • IPad connection to HD boxes via sky plus

    Hi
My iPad will only recognise one HD box despite the fact I have 2. Initially it recognised both, but now can't find one box. Both active. Have tried uninstalling sky + app and reinstalling but no difference. Any ideas?
    Thanks

You'd plug the HDMI cable from the Apple TV into the receiver as you do all the other devices, if you don't have enough HDMI ports then you'd need an HDMI switch. (a quick search reveals your receiver has 3 HDMI inputs)

  • Connection to JetDirect Box x500 with default settings failed

    Hello everybody,
got a big problem withJetDirect x500 boxes in my company.
After a blackout at my company, many JetDirect boxes lose their configuration and reset themselves to the default configurations.
We got the exact configuration of each box written down, so i want to set them up again with the correct settings.
But now i can´t connect to the boxes via HP JetAdmin. I try it with the mac adress and also with the default ip (192.0.0.192), but non of these works.
I also tried resetting the boxes and then try to connect, but the connection failed.
I also tried to connect the boxes locally via a network switch to my notebook and repeat to connect with the methods written above , but this is also not working.
There must be a way to configure these boxes locally so they can be set up in the network, but i can not find in in the manual.
Did someone got a solution for this and can help me out, please ???
    greetings
    pat

Like sasek, I'm using the RTL8187SE card and I can't use networkmanager because it just doesn't detect the networks. What I've seen in the log files is that wpa_supplicant is stuck in a loop. I used Fedora for a few days and it connects fine, using the gnome-shell applet, but Fedora is so damn slow on my laptop.
Right now I'm using wicd-curses. That's my solution for now.

  • Cannot connect to NAS via gigabit on HH3

Trying to connect my new NAS to my BT HomeHub3, and it recognises the LAN if I use one of the standard yellow ethernet ports, but it doesnt recognise if using the red gigabit ethernet port.  Is there anything obvious why I should just be able to use this port as if it were a normal ethernet port?
Obviously the NAS has a gigabit ethernet port, and I'm using a CAT5e cable.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

yes the RED PORT is not the gigabyte port it is the infinity wan port the gig port is port 4 of the yellow sockets as shown on the rear of the hub

On my new MacBook Pro when I am connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable, Facebook pictures do not load. They show up as white boxes with blue question marks. This also happens on a website editor. But, when I am connected to the internet via Wifi, everything load properly. This is my work computer, so I have to be able to connect through the Ethernet cable to access everything. Please help me!

I mostly use Safari. But I also tried it on Firefox, Mozilla, and Camino. Mac OS X. It's my work computer, so I've only tried it at the office. I have to be connected through the Ethernet cable to access my files and email on the server.

  • Cant connect 2 nas to each other via my personal cloud

    hi ,
i try to connect 2 nas to each other via my personal cloud.
1 of them is under my personal cloud ,, i send an invatation to the other. but when i put user name and password.. it says that the device is already familer and i get an error i cant acess.
i tried changing the cloud name.. each time i get a message it is already exist... i tried to change the configuration that each time the other one is a host.. but still nothing... please helpppp. can i reset clouds name????

    Hello yuri1212
Are the devices on the same local network or are they remote?  If they are remote you should be able to setup and host the cloud from one unit and then use the "other personal cloud" option to connect the remote NAS.
If they are on the same local network, personal cloud will not work between them.
For removing a persona cloud name from our servers, please contact support in your region so that our escalation teams can have the cloud name removed and made available.

Make sure that the Att Modem goes to the netgear router via ethernet cable. Then connect your Apple Tv with a ethernet cable to the back of the net gear router. Airplay wants it to both be connected to the same device, usually.

  • Connecting to NAS via SMB returns "Connection Failed"

Ok so I always used to be able to connect to my Network Drive no problem. But I was away over Easter and ever since my return I am unable to connect to the drive via SMB. I know there's nothing wrong with the drive as all my PC's on the network can connect to it and I can FTP to it from my mac.
When I try to connect from: Finder > Go > Connect to Server > smb://192.168.2.6/ I get a popup asking which drives I want to mount but when I click Ok I just get the:
    Connection failed
There was an error connecting to the server '192.168.2.6". Check the server name or IP address and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
    Any ideas?

I have similar problems; I too can't connect to my NAS anymore. I get a "no permision error"
But when I type: smb://username:password192.168.1.40/folder  it works, but I have to do that every time.
The passwords are not stored anymore. Also I can't use my NAS as a TimeMachine drive anymore.

  • Small, cheap NAS box that supports nfs/rsync/ssh ?

    Hi all,
for my personal backup needs, I'm looking for a standalone NAS box ("networked hard disk/raid solution").  I need to have support for at least one of rsync/nfs/ssh.  (smb/ftp is not enough for me)
It shouldn't be too big (eg not the size of a regular pc.) and it shouldn't cost more then 350 euro or so without disks.
If I can mount one or two sata 1TB disks I'm happy.
Bonus points for solutions where I have total control over the "OS" on it, where the hardware platform exists of standardized easily replacable parts and if it's powerfull enough to do encryption. (I'm prepared to throw in extra cash for these features)
    I guess my options are:
    1) a product that supports what I want out of the box.  I couldn't find that (unless ridiculously expensive, eg 500 euro or more without disks)
    2) a product that *almost* does what I want, but where you can install a small Linux distro/freenas over the original firmware so you can do what you want.  Basically any appliance (be it a storage device, embedded platforms, network equipment, ...) that can host hard disks and where you can overwrite the OS is worth looking into.
    3) building something myself.  I've seen some really small motherboards based on Atom cpu's, or even embedded stuff can be enough (something like soekris, pc-engines, etc).  But it needs 2 sata ports then, I need to find a housing, a psu, etc. SFF-pc's such as shuttle's etc can also be good options
    Any tips, pointers, ideas ?
    Thanks

I ended up installing the OS on a CompactFlash card, so the hard drive would have to run constantly. As a result, it's nice and quite, uses little power, and the OS on the CF card is automatically backed up to the hard drive. I wrote up a detailed description of the project here: http://rockhoppernotes.blogspot.com/200 … sktop.html.
    Thanks, looks quite good.
Except one thing: the 945GC chipset has a TDP of 22.2W.. that's stupid imo, and defeats the whole purpose of a low-tdp cpu such as the Atom.  Right now I'm still doubting between waiting for an Atom board based on the 945GM(S)/945GSE chip (TDP 6Watt) (eeebox has that one, some MSI mini-ITX boards should be available in january) or going for a socket775 board with an intel core2 45nm cpu, which would consume not much more then Atom+ 945GC chipset (when idle, loaded is much more but I don't plan to load it ).
Nvidia is also working on an Atom chipset but I don't think I'll wait for that.

  • Dear Community, how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ? Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ? Cheers, Marek

    Dear Community,
how can I connect SCSI tape recorder via USB to iMac ?
Is there any adapter/converter on the market now ?
    Cheers, Marek

    Thanks Jan.
Actually the reason to use Quantum SCSI tape recorder is to back-up big amount of data (propriety movies footage) both on PC (what is quite easy, using SCSII host adapter with VHDCI 68 connector) and iMac what seems to be not easy. All my search by Google leads to that conclussion, they finished production of SCSI-to-USB or FireWire because somebody stopped to produce chips to covert protocols. So even buying noe second-hand adapter, no guaranty it's still working with Lion (nobody is developing drivers anymore). Strange is, nobody or just a few are using SCSII (Ultra 320) devices (while the transfer is not bad, 320 MBps what is 2560 Mbps, so the only limitation is tape recording (some 80 MBps) not an interface. Using compression mode I can (and I do) record 1,6 TB of footage data. However quite slow, is safe and cheap, comparing with any HD storage solution. USB 2 is much more limited.
I'm using Time Capsule for buck-up. But even 3 TB one day will be full of data, then old back-ups will be eaten by new once, what is not good idea for archives. I'm using another 2TB NAS HD (2x2TB RAID 1), but this is also going to be full soon.
Of course, you are right, the option is another machine (OSX,Win,Linux or Solaris) equipped with SCSII controller. But this requires another machine, just for back-up time to time, and in practice iMac folders must be shared with that small auxiliary machine because amount of data practically excluding even temporary data collection on auxiliary machine. And it must be transfer by wire, not WIFI, my only network. Tape recording is in my case really good, professional solution, isn't it?
Anyway, if somebody has similar requirements as me, and found the solution for SCSI, please let me know. So far, follow Jan's idea, I'm thinking about some embeded mini PC, fanless, equipped with slot for SCSI, with SOME smart system on-board, to deal with iMac for type recording. The option is previous Apple model, but to be honest, I became Mac/OSX user 4 years ago. I fell in love with Mac, but my knowledge about previous models is based on Google....
My desk becomes full of boxes. Do you know how big Quantum TC-L42BX is ? Is very big. And now another box.....another keyboard....another screen... And one small adapter could solve the problem. Eh....
    Best regards,
    Marek

  • AirPort Disk works on Vista but is ULTRA SLOW on MacBook Pro...please help.

This is nuts, huh? Please help.
I can copy files using Window's Vista at about 7MBps so it takes around 2min 40secs to copy a previously bought 1.3GB iTunes TV show from the AirPort Disk (connected via USB 2.0)to my Vista machine. I understand this is a reasonable speed, if you think it should go faster let me know. When I try to play it with iTunes directly from the Airport Disk(by control clicking it and telling it to play with iTunes, not sure this is the best way, advice appreciated) it plays okay but I get a fair amount of stutters where it will skip a 1-4 seconds. Any way to fix this? Or should I just download it to my computer and play it from there. I was trying to save space and confusion on my computers and just play via the Airport Extreme Disk.
NOW THE WEIRD STUFF! It takes 4 hours to download the same TV file mentioned above from the Airport Disk to my MacBook Pro! And to stream the movie from the Airport Disk is impossible. Can anyone offer suggestions? I searched online and could not find any help.
Additional Info that might be helpful:
-AirPort Extreme 340ll/a, Version 7.5(I assume that's the firmware version).
-I erased with 0s and formatted an external 7200RPM 8MB Western Digital drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" via my MacBook Pro's USB port, using Disk Utility.
-My wi-fi connections seems fine: for web surfing it is fast with my Macbook and Windows computers, so that's not a problem. FYI, I did some internet download speed tests and got like 15,000-20,000kbps, which is pretty good, right?
-I hooked the drive up directly to my MacBook Pro's USB 2.0 port and copied the same HD TV show file to the computer, and Apple's "Activity Monitor" utility showed it is reading and writing at 30MBps which I understand is quite good. So it does not appear to be a hard drive problem either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cause of problem:
I found out that the problem was that in the "Airport Utility" under "Internet Connection" tab, the "Connection Sharing" had been set to "Off(Bridge Mode)". This stopped my MacBook Pro from accessing the AirPort Disk(an external hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station). I still find it weird that My HP computer could access the AirPort Disk just fine and my MacBook Pro was so ultra slow(i.e. 4 hours to copy a 1.3GB file!) accessing files on the hard drive.
So, how did the default setting get changed to cause the problem to being with? I got some error pop-up box that said there were 2 NAT tables causing a conflict of some sort, so I followed it's instructions which put it in bridge mode which caused the problems. The reset of the wireless router put the "Connection Sharing" back into "Share a Public IP address" mode which is the default.
So anyway, this appears to be the end of this story, and I hope this post saves some people out there from some headaches and lost time!
    Peace!

  • Performance is too slow on SQL Azure box

    Hi,
Performance is too slow on SQL Azure box (Located in Europe)
Below query returns 500,000 rows in 18 Min. on SQL Azure box (connected via SSMS, located in India)
    SELECT * FROM TABLE_1
Whereas, on local server it returns 500,000 rows in (30 sec.)
    SQL Azure configuration:
    Service Tier/Performance Level : Premium/P1
    DTU       : 100
    MAX DB Size : 500GB
    Max Worker Threads : 200
    Max Sessions     : 2400
Benchmark Transaction Rate      : 105 transactions per second
    Predictability : Best
Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hello,
Can you please explain in a little more detail the scenario you testing? Are you comparing a SQL Database in Europe against a SQL Database in India? Or a SQL Database with a local, on-premise SQL Server installation?
In case of the first scenario, the roundtrip latency for the connection to the datacenter might play a role.
If you are comparing to a local installation, please note that you might be running against completely different hardware specifications and without network delay, resulting in very different results.
In both cases you can use the below blog post to assess the resource utilization of the SQL Database during the operation:
    http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2014/09/11/azure-sql-database-introduces-new-near-real-time-performance-metrics/
If the DB utilizes up to 100% you might have to consider to upgrade to a higher performance level to achieve the throughput you are looking for.
    Thanks,
    Jan

  • How can FTP users access my NAS system via FTP client?

I recently purchased a 2 bay, 4TB Buffalo Link Station DUO in order to solve some FTP issues.  I have about 50 users outside my LAN that need to connect drop files on my NAS, however nobody seems able to connect via FTP client.  If they login using the Web Access Dynamic DNS address they can read and write via their web browser, but it's clunky and slow.
My NAS system has been given the IP adress of 192.168.1.254 which seem to me that it's a local IP adress, not a public/static IP. Do I need to manually assign an IP adress to my NAS system in order fot users to log into that specific IP and go directly to the shared folders on the NAS system?
    Thanks in advance!

Your NAS is getting that IP because it is behind your Router, which is the normal way to use it and as it should be.
You can not ASSIGN a public IP you your NAS. Only your ISP can do that and usually that incures an extra cost for more than 1 Public IP address. Usually included with a Business account and most of the time only available with a Business account. ISP do not want home owners running FTP or Mail servers on a residential acounts.
As noted you have to forward the noraml FTP port, port 21, in your Router to the IP of the NAS. Since you already have that port forwarded to your Mac, which I have no idea why you did that, you have to either change that port forwarding to the NAS IP or make the FTP server on the NAS respond to some other port and forward that on the router to the IP of the NAS. The to access the NAS FTP server you have to enter the piblic IP address of your router followed with a :and port #. XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:22 or whatever port # you assign to the FTP server on the NAS.
