Ultra Slow Infinity

Hi
I have had Infinity Option 2 since April, and when it was first installed I got 37mb download and 8-9mb upload, however over time it slowed right down, but a reboot of the router and hub would usually restore the speed.  Over the past month, the download speed has decreased steadily, and the upload speed has reduced to at best 3.98mb, but more often than not is less than 1mb.  Over the past fortnight or so, there has been a significant drop in speed, both up and down (see the attached graph)  Tonight, I have an download speed of 0.72Mbps and an upload speed of 0.21Mbps.  Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how I can get back to the origional speeds I had?
Regards
Trevor

Hi Trevor and welcome.
What I would do first is....
Connect your laptop to the HH3 via an ethernet lead and run the FTTC diagnostic part of the speed test http://www.speedtester.bt.com/
And note your IP settings.
Being wired this removes any possible wireless issues and will give you your IP Internet Profile which will be useful if you have to contact the Forum Mods for help.
The IP is the profile setting the exchange has set you on to provide a reliable broadband.
If your IP settings are low with resulting download achieved speeds you could try forcing an IP reset.
Turn off both the Openreach Modem and HH3 and after a minute or two back on again.
You then need to run the BT speedtester again to see if the IP has changed.
(However there is a 1 hour delay between tests)
You could try the BT Beta 40Mbps test part as that may not need the 1 hour delay.
Or in the meantime try the http://www.speedtest.net/ and see if speeds have improved.
One variation of speed problem is when the IP setting drops very low and the achieved download is correspondingly low.
The other variation of speed problem could be the IP setting remain high (eg 38716Kbps) but the achieved download speed is very low.
Carry out these tests and add the results to your thread, if things have not improved I would seek help from the BT forum Mods with this form http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4951
And add a copy of this threads URL to the contact form so they can see the background to the problem.
The Mods are very helpful and will contact you, may take 72hrs or so due their workload.
Btw it's best not to turn off the BT Openreach White Modem too often as this may be recognised as a line problem by the DLM Exchange Monitoring equipment with a corresponding reduction in IP (speed).
Good Luck
My test result example below shows
IP Profile for your line is -38717 Kbps.... 38Mbps download max speed setting.
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 2000 Kbps.... Upload capped at 2Mbps as I am on Infinity option 1.

  • AirPort Disk works on Vista but is ULTRA SLOW on MacBook Pro...please help.

This is nuts, huh? Please help.
I can copy files using Window's Vista at about 7MBps so it takes around 2min 40secs to copy a previously bought 1.3GB iTunes TV show from the AirPort Disk (connected via USB 2.0)to my Vista machine. I understand this is a reasonable speed, if you think it should go faster let me know. When I try to play it with iTunes directly from the Airport Disk(by control clicking it and telling it to play with iTunes, not sure this is the best way, advice appreciated) it plays okay but I get a fair amount of stutters where it will skip a 1-4 seconds. Any way to fix this? Or should I just download it to my computer and play it from there. I was trying to save space and confusion on my computers and just play via the Airport Extreme Disk.
NOW THE WEIRD STUFF! It takes 4 hours to download the same TV file mentioned above from the Airport Disk to my MacBook Pro! And to stream the movie from the Airport Disk is impossible. Can anyone offer suggestions? I searched online and could not find any help.
Additional Info that might be helpful:
-AirPort Extreme 340ll/a, Version 7.5(I assume that's the firmware version).
-I erased with 0s and formatted an external 7200RPM 8MB Western Digital drive to "Mac OS Extended Journaled" via my MacBook Pro's USB port, using Disk Utility.
-My wi-fi connections seems fine: for web surfing it is fast with my Macbook and Windows computers, so that's not a problem. FYI, I did some internet download speed tests and got like 15,000-20,000kbps, which is pretty good, right?
-I hooked the drive up directly to my MacBook Pro's USB 2.0 port and copied the same HD TV show file to the computer, and Apple's "Activity Monitor" utility showed it is reading and writing at 30MBps which I understand is quite good. So it does not appear to be a hard drive problem either.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Cause of problem:
I found out that the problem was that in the "Airport Utility" under "Internet Connection" tab, the "Connection Sharing" had been set to "Off(Bridge Mode)". This stopped my MacBook Pro from accessing the AirPort Disk(an external hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station). I still find it weird that My HP computer could access the AirPort Disk just fine and my MacBook Pro was so ultra slow(i.e. 4 hours to copy a 1.3GB file!) accessing files on the hard drive.
So, how did the default setting get changed to cause the problem to being with? I got some error pop-up box that said there were 2 NAT tables causing a conflict of some sort, so I followed it's instructions which put it in bridge mode which caused the problems. The reset of the wireless router put the "Connection Sharing" back into "Share a Public IP address" mode which is the default.
So anyway, this appears to be the end of this story, and I hope this post saves some people out there from some headaches and lost time!
    Peace!

Is the softcopy download of lion ultra slow?!
    Yes.

    Anytime is a bad time
Actually, it's only 6:45 A here, remember folks are on all different times.

  • Ultra Slow Playback

I am using Premiere Pro 4.2.1. It was working ok until one day recently it started to run ultra slow. Playing back a standard definition AVI file on the Timeline is impossible. Probably moves about 2 frames per second. I'm not sure if it is a hardware issue but it was working fine, ie. I did not do anything to change the set up of the computer.
    Here's the spec:
    Custiom built computer:
    INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6300 2.80ghz
    ASUS P5QPL-VM EPU Mobo
    450W PSU
    Sapphire ATI Radeon 4600 Graphics - 512mb DDR-3

1 x Samsung 1TB HDD (for Video files)
    Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 800MHz Dual Channel Memory
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit version
Graphics card has been updated to latest drivers. The card has VGA out and HDMI out. Was working fine using HDMI out to Hitachi HD TV for previews but for some reason has decided to run slow now. No obvious reason for it.

Is that a DV AVI file or another codec? Have you installed any other transcoders or players lately?

  • Ultra Slow Performance

    Greetings to all,
I got a machine to perform OSB/SOA development.
This has Admin and Manage Server running in a cluster setup.
With 4GB RAM the machine is becoming Ultra Slow.
Is there any way I can just run the Admin Server?
Because when I am removing the manage server , I am unable to see the OSB Test Console.
Please help SOA & Process Management
    Rgds,
    MD

    Hii MD,
Please provide more information on clustering i.e how many servers are there in your clustering.
As you specified you only 4GB of memory then we need to set the JVM heap parameter accordingly in the space of 4GB.
Is there any way I can just run the Admin Server?
Yes we can run only Admin Server to do the development, the only thing is while configuring a domain you to point all the supporting Lib files to Admin server.
You are unable to see the SB Console:
As you would have point the supporting OSB application to Managed server and once you shut down the managed server, the consoles become unavailable.

  • Ultra slow wifi

After months of not being able to connect to my wifi router (3COM) (kept getting 'Error connecting to network') Apple told me problem lies in my router and I should get a compatible router... like theirs... (disgusting - every other brand of wifi adapter has managed to connect to it)
Anyways, so I read almost every post on this forum and bought a Linksys WAG354 as it seemed most people could use it with no problems. And hey presto I can connect to it!!
... but my speed is ULTRA slow. I'm copying 30Gb to a PC wired to the router and my transmit speed (As monitored by MenuMeters) is occasionally going upto 1.5MB then down to 200KB, but usually hangs around around 500KB!! (~4Mb) and I'm sitting just 2m from the router with apparently full signal strength (5 bars according to the icon).
My router is set to 11g and other wireless PCs which are about 15m away in another room can copy at about 20Mb. When I try the same copy except with MBP wired to the router MenuMeters reports around 90Mb - so no problems there.
Basically my wifi is ultra slow. Does anyone know why this could be? Any hacks/patches I could apply? I do software update everyday, so I guess its a 3rd party fix I need - or maybe something to do with the router config? channel? wpa etc?
    MacBook Pro C2D 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Week 46 Build

this is a known bug of the C2D wifi cards, it's still not clear what causes it, but i looks like a software problem, hopefully, otherwise the wifi card has to be replaced....
your not the only one waiting for a new update for the airport extreme drivers in the C2D and the mac pro.

  • 845 Ultra - Slow / Lags

I always had a weird feeling about my computer , and i realized that there may be a problem since i bought a Visiontek GeF4 Ti 4200 128 mb DDR a week ago. (I bought it cuz i tought my GeForce 2 MX 400 was sorta  lagging) .
Compared to my dad's computer , who has a:
    Celeron 1.7 Ghz 400 fsb.
    256 Mb DDR 266 Ram
    Geforce 4 MX 440, MSI 845PE
    Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
    a Maxtor 30 Gb 7200 RPM (SLIM)
    Realtek NIC
    WinXP SP1
    mine is significantly slower:
    P4 1.6Ghz
    512 Mb DDR 266 Ram
    GeForce 4 Ti 4200
    MSI 845 Ultra
    Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
Maxtor 30 Gb 7200 RPM (SLIM)
    Actiontec 56k V.90 H/W Modem
    ATI TV Wonder PCI
    Realtek NIC
    WinXP SP1
I tried removing the modem & the ATI since these are the only things thats different in our systems without success. Also i did install his system the same way i installed mine, Intel Chipset drivers firts. drivers, etc...
    Heres the symptoms:
In WinXP, Windows moves slowly, not THAT slow, but they also mess with the other thing on the desktop, like if i move them too fast, all my icons disapear , then reapear one by one, all this is done without even searching on the hardisk. its just like it cant handle all the desktop at once. sort of LAG feeling. And Although we have the same harddisk & ATA 100 controllers, mine is so much slower, on my dad's computer it feels like i didnt even finished to click on an icon and the window appears.  On mine, it takes up to 1 to 5 seconds... With a fresh install of WinXP. it gets sometimes worse. or sometimes , i boot up and its faster (but rarely). i tried to defrag without succes :(   --- The weirdest thing is that games runs OK , loads less faster but in-game playing is aiight.
Is there anything that would have to be done ? Or is it that strange thing i heard about manufacturer using a batch of faulty component and waiting 4 us to send in repair ?
Thanks in advance, any help would be greatly appreciated !

It's hard to believe it's the video card if your games run normally, which you asserted in your first post(unless we're talking about Solitaire). Action games and simulations, for instance, are drawing, redrawing the screen 10 to 100 times a second, each of which is roughly equivalent to moving the window in terms of the graphic resources required. Play a game where the screen is constantly being redrawn and get a frame rate reading. If these games run smoothly the problem is not your video hardware, it is the way the XP  is configured.
But be sure that you have hardware acceleration enabled for your video card. It seems that the CPU is being called upon to do far too much work when you move a window and maybe the graphics are set to run in software mode not hardware. As I said, when I move a window, my CPU usage goes to only 2%, my video card is doing all the work.
If your mainboard memory is faulty you'll get random  error messages and crashes. If it's insufficient or not being addressed properly, your OS will need to read/write to your hard drive as a substitute. This could account for the slowness as well as the high CPU utilization. Also games store as much graphics info in the video cards own memory for speedy frame drawing and maybe this is why the games run smoothly and the 2D Windows desktop does not.

  • Slow infinity broadband

I have had bt business infinity broadband for several weeks now. It has never been very fast but now it is even slower. My speedtest results vary from 2mb per sec to 6 mb per sec. I was hoping for nearer 20mb per sec or even the 76 mbps advertised! Any ideas what i can do to improve this?

You need to post in the Business forums, this one's for Residential.

  • Slow Infinity

Hi I upgraded from broadband to Bt Infinity and on day of connection I got a download speed of 37mb and since then my speed keeps droping to 7.7mb.
When I rang Bt I got usual script but managed to get an enginer apointment but not till a week later,my exchange is only round the corner from me and should get full 77mb so in effect im getting 1 tenth of what I should and basicly the same speed as most standed broadband.
I know new connections need to stabilise but the speed should increase from connection speed not drop so drasticly, and for the cost BT honestly think its right that we pay full price for a service that to be honest is a joke, then expect you to wait over a week for an enginer to look into it when the service was just connected.
every speed check compleated shows different speeds from 27mb then within seconds 9mb to its slowest so far of 7.7mb,this is not stabilisation this is a major issue.
Now what seems to puzzle me is that when I had standed broadband I had same issue with speed getting slower to a point that I went from 14mb to a stable 5.5mb and was contantly told this is within paramiters and no faults found but hey its happening again now with infinity.(Do BT honestly think that our old phone lines that come into our homes might not be the problem and possibley chec and replace when installing this new fast internet becouse there seems to be far too many people with the same problems that dont seem to get a permanent fix.
I would be interested in any ones responce to this and if they are or have in the past the same issues.

Hi just did more speed tests and got 38mb then immediately set it to test again and came back with 9mb this is crazy either BTs own speed tester is messed up or my connection has been duff from point of first connected to Infinity.
Why why did I think this would resolve my standed broadband issues of the same problem.

  • Slow Infinity and incompetent staff.

My Infinity has been slow for almost 2 weeks now. Getting "speeds" of 2-8mbps. It used to be 20+.
I've been trying to get this fixed.
Firstly it took BT ages to understand I am not availible before 7pm as I am in work.
Then when I went through online to chat to a technical advisor they said my profile had not been updated and an engineer will be sent to fix it. They did that and it's still slow.
Last night at 8.55pm they phoned only to say there's an error on their system and can they call back tomorrow.
They've just called saying it my be a faulty ADSL filter and to plug in my spare one. I said I'll have to go find it and try it.
They said they'll call back tomorrow.
I found the filter and got to my phone socket only to find with fire optic broadband an ADSL filter isn't even used as there are 2 sockets, 1 for the phone and an added on one that was attacted when the Infinity was installed. Surely the staff should know how these systems are set up!
If this isn't fixed by Saturday I'll be going over to Virgin.

  • Slow Infinity, Urmston Manchester

Since yesterday morning my BT Infinity has been very slow. I reported the issue through this forum and via the proper contact form yesterday, but have heard nothing back.
Loading basic web pages is either very slow or won't work at all. I'm posting this from my phone on 3G. A search of my landline number on the BT site suggests a known fault in the area. Is this a standard message though, or is work actually being done to rectify a known issue in the area? Any information on this would be useful.

  • Slow Infinity speed on Xbox, PS3 and Sky despite h...

I have recently switched from Sky to BT and have a BT Infinity 2 package. My computer is working well and achieves a very good speed - 76Mps down. I am delighted with this. However, despite all my devices being 'hard wired' via ethernet I am getting very slow dowload speeds on my xbox, ps3 and Sky HD box.
Sky Anytime + Takes over an hour to be ready to play an SD movie
Iplayer constantly buffers on PS3 and Xbox
A 56mb File on Xbox live takes 10+ minutes to download (dread to think how long a large file would take!)
I have tried swapping the ports and cables and have tried resetting the homehub. There are no faults on the line and I have had an engineer look at the installation.
I am now very frustrated as when I was with sky on an 8mb connection I had no problems at all with all my devices.
Does anyone out there have any ideas? I would be really grateful them as I am thinking of going back to what worked!

Having only having infinity for only two weeks I'm not impressed! Started off great then for the last week speeds have been dire! Phoned support, they changed the wireless setting, I've reset the hub to no avail! Please sort BT or I'm going back to talktalk

Is it Infinity 1 or Infinity 2.
Was it a self install or installed by an engineer.
Does your slow speeds happen only on wireless or does it happen on a wired connection.
Can you run this checker and post back a screen shot of the results
