Ultrabeat & Sculpture Question

Hi Everyone,
I'm a newbie to logic and I'm still trying to learn this wonderful program. I have purchased most of the macprovideo material and it has really helped simplify things. Though the videos are great, I really wish they would cover logic's synths, particularly Sculpture & Ultrabeat. I am aware of the included reference guides, but I am still curious to know what other resourses are available that can make the learning curve a bit less steep. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
JV

I personally am unaware of any 3rd party books or tutorials that cover either of those two Logic instruments. Although I can certainly see the desire for that.
I would suggest setting aside some time, and digesting the manuals. Perhaps covering one page at a time, really spending time with a "section" of the plug-in, as opposed to the whole thing. Take apart small "chunks", and really learn what a small group of parameters do.
After a few days, or weeks (depending on how much time you have to devote to it), I think you'll be feeling pretty confident with your knowledge.
My 2 cents...

  • Newbie sculpture question

I have just been through a very nice video training course in Sculpture, but WHERE in Logic Pro do I access/find this and other fantastic software instrument?

After selecting an Instrument track, in the channel strip at the left of your Arrange window, click and hold the rectangle directly below "I/O" and choose Stereo -> Logic -> Sculpture.

  • Ultrabeat simple question....

....I hope. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to wipe the step/pattern sequencer clear so i can start making my own sequences/patterns from scratch? Having to erase each note is a real pain and I can't find anything on this anywhere.... plus auditioning different drums is impossible....
    thanks,
    Jason

    Hi there
Go down on the bottom right of Ultrabeat and right-click on the drop-down menu where you can select different patterns where you will find the options copy, paste and clear.

  • Sculpture, ultrabeat etc.

    hi again!
i can`t find ultrabeat, sculpture etc. in my logic pro7, can anyone give me a step to step list of finding these features and using it?

I must admit that, as a newbee, it took me some time to grasp the concept from the awkward presentation in the manual, jut because it gets channels and tracks all confused.
There was a time when sequencers didn't provide a way to accommodate audio signals, so the only route was:
    (1) midi file > midi region > [midi track] > midi channel > output = midi events
Now, technology enables the alternative path:
    (2) audio file > audio region [audio track] > audio channel > output = audio events
And inserting an instrument-plug in an audio channel allows for using an audio track as a midi track which the plug turns into an audio track that feeds an audio channel - an hybrid:
    (3) midi file > midi region > [midi track] > [instr. plug] > [audio track] > audio channel > output = audio events
But things aren't constructed in this order. You'll have to
1: create an audio channel - or use an existing one
2: assign a track to it - from now on, it's an audio track
3: insert an instrument-plug as input - it won't be the actual input, just a medium
4: feed this track with midi data - the actual input - that will be converted to audio in real-time through the use of the plug-in...
All of this would make sense at once if it weren't for the upsetting confusion between technical terms and conceptual notions. For instance, the menu that says "create new track" doesn't create a new channel: it must already exist in the environment. This is obvious for midi channels - since channels 1 to 16 already exist, virtually, in the [invisible] interface with the midi driver - but audio channels must be actually defined in the [invisible] interface between Logic and the audio driver, before you can assign tracks to them.
As a matter of fact, tracks are chameleon, while channels are not. They will when technology has improved enough to convert audio data into midi data in real-time. Then we'll have second alternative:
    (4) audio file > audio region > [audio track] > [A2M plug] > [midi track] > midi channel > output = midi events

  • Sampler in l.e 8

can someone tell me if you can load your own samples into the sampler in logic express 8? you cant do it in 7 and was thinking of going for pro to get this feature, but if its a new feature in express 8 theres no need to go to that much expence
    thank you
    dave

cheers, yet again you answered my question..top man
    Glad to help.
il def be buying the upgrade now,it was a major feature missing on l.e 7
There's much less of a difference now between LE8 and LP8.
According to Rob Schoeben, Apple’s vice president of Applications Product Marketing, there are only four features that separate Logic Pro from Logic Express. They are: surround sound, distributed audio, high-end control surface support and TDM support. “Despite the naming convention, this is Logic Pro, minus those four features.” (courtesy of Shneb)
    So, LE8 is essentially LP8.
Remember, however, you don't buy Logic Pro alone but the complete Logic Studio, including Ultrabeat, Sculpture, the five Jam Packs and lots more (the product page says 6 DVDs).
In my view, they're both great deals.
Just depends on whether you need/can afford the extras.
    Cheers.

  • How can I save controller assignments with a project?

How can I save controller assignments with a project, so that I can use different controller assignments for the same synth in another project
Let's say I am controlling a Logic instrument with MIDI and CC data sent from MaxMSP. I have created a composition and would now like to make another one, with new assignments of controllers, in a new project. Is it possible to save the first piece's c.a. with it's project, so that I can switch between projects and have the controller assignments switch accordingly? Is that something that's become possible in Logic X with Smart Control or another workaround?
Thanks a lot for any hints!

With standard instruments you can cable transformers before the objects translating incoming cc's to "fader" events.
With the new plug-ins they've hacked into Logic (ultrabeat, sculpture) this isn't possible, so your stuck with the "controller assignments" window which to me seems to be aimed at dedicated control surfaces and autoloads. My experiences with the controller assignments window aren't good, as i've found it drops incoming messages quite often.
Knowing how to do this(controller assignments per song) would give me a reason to open the controller assignments window again..Pretty useless to me otherwise.

  • Keyboard SHORTCUT to open wavform in SOUNDTRACK? Good books?

1st. I believe there is a shortcut that will open a wav/aiff file in Logic into Soundtrack, then when you are down, it goes back to Logic. What is that shortcut?
2nd. With the new PRO training for some apple stores - anyone know when Lynda .com or are there some now (on-line) video training for Logic? I'm not looking for the basic "set up and record" but looking for titles like Pro Tools has which is everything from MIXING to Mastering and Orchestral tricks, tips, et-cetera. Or if some are at least in the works.
    Thanks.

MacProVideo offer video training, including detailed stuff on the inserts (eg Ultrabeat, Sculpture & EXS24). Also what they call 303 Tips & Tricks. I have the lot and some of it is very good.

  • Ultrabeat Patches/Presets Question

I'm sure this will have been asked & probably answered before but i have done a search & found nothing on it.
    So I'll apologize now.
Ok Ultrabeat patches or Ultrabeat presets.
I know that Logic 8 already has an extensive library of presets for Ultrabeat but i have pretty much been through them & used them to death.
My question is this , Is there any way i could get hold of more Ultrabeat presets or even more patches for the step sequencer.
    Thank You

    Hi Sampeconstruct
Ive started down the programming them myself route to be honest i was being lazy
Not much response so i assumed the answer to my question was no
It was more the patterns to use in the sequencer i was after really
Ive been getting some interesting grooves using the transform window in the piano roll aswell after creating a sequence in UB

  • One more ultrabeat question....

    hello folks...
i have an idea which i want to try but have no clue how to get it done in ultrabeat...
so i load three samples in ultrabeat (with drag & drop) say 1.snare 2.hi-hat and 3.one more hi-hat
now is it possible to have one hi-hat in 1/8 resolution playing in the pattern and other in 1/16 resolution (at the same time) and is copied to logic when i drag the pattern of it. hope i am clear here with the question....
i am not able to do this because when i change the RESOLUTION in the lower options it changes resolution of every sample loaded (1-25)
    waiting for an answer....

    In short... No!
The resolution parameter affects the 'size' of each step for all sequences in a pattern.
Maybe you could program one of the parts in a second pattern set to the correct resolution, import that MIDI region, the merge the two regions.
Or maybe run 2 instances of Ultrabeat??

  • Question about UltraBeat

Hi. I am concidering jumping from Ableton Live to Logic Pro in my home studio. Live has been a great learning software for me in the beginning of my audio endeavours. However, I feel I am ready to take on Logic in the studio and keep Live for, well, live performances.
Anyway, one instrument I am excited about is Ultrabeat. Ultrabeat's oscillators as well as sample playback combined into one interface specificly for drums seems extremely useful. This is one area where my workflow has been struggling lately. I am tired of always sampling as well as using monster synths to make a simple kick.
My question about Ultrabeat is, once you make a hit with an oscillator, do you save it as a sample and load it in another area of the instrument for playback? Or, does it playback entirely from the oscillator? If it always remains in the oscillator, are you able to make several differnt settings with the oscillators and jump between them as you select voices, as well as playback all of them at once? That seems unlikely.
Please enlighten me on Ultrabeat a bit. I tried to download the express demo to toy around with it a bit myself but the link is broken on Apple's site.
Also, if you have an extra moment, please share your feelings of Logic. If I make the jump, will I ever look back?
    Thanks for your time!

Wow. Thanks for your helpful reply.
Sounds like I have all I need at the moment and just need to learn to use it to it's full potential first.
I was looking to Logic for:
A: Ultrabeat seems inspiring and useful with the built in oscillators, pattern sequencer, and user interface. I currently have Battery 3 and have been attempting to utilize it well with Live but I can't stand not having a drum map editor to sequence it. I asked for a feature to have the option to choose either a drum map editor or standard piano map editor per midi track. This would be a cozy workflow helper for me. Maybe Live will listen and add this in 7.
B: Surround sound capabilities. I have the Presonus FireStudio and MSR remote so I plan to add rear, center and sub channels in the semi-near future. This may be coming in Live 7 also!
C: Ability to link CPU's for extra DSP.
D: I felt once I really got into Logic that it would likely be more professional quality overall.
F: I have a new Mac Pro Dual 2.66 Intel Core Duo arriving today. I thought Logic would utalize it's power best. I know Live, since 6, is multi-processor aware. However, I'm not sure about the dual core part.
    E: Apple has me hypnotized.
Now, since purchasing Live I have also obtained Operator and Sampler. I also have every Native Instrument plug including Massive via Komplete 4.
I also have Wave Arts PowerSuie 5 which gives me sidechaining. I wondered how the Trackplug 5 compressors compared to Logic's.
I was considering selling my PowerSuite 5 and Komplete 4 if I was happy with Logic's instruments. I felt making the switch may be smarter in the long run for studio use. There are certain features in automation drawing that I want that Live does not have as well. I was thinking Logic being considered "pro app" may address some details that Live doesn't today. However, I agree that Live is bug-free and constantly updated. Live may grow as I need it to as I grow as a producer.
Bottom line, I should wait a few months and see what Live 7 offers before i make a final decision.
    Thanks for your reply!
I still wouldn't mind more opinions either.

  • Dumb Question: Where is Ultrabeat in Logic Express?

Long time GarageBand user here, so I had Logic pre-installed on my iMac... I'm getting familiar with the interface, but I cannot locate Ultrabeat to save my life... Can someone please point me in the right direction??

First of all, if you still can't find Ultrabeat, create a new Software Instrument track. Next, move your cursor over to the instrument channel strip on the far left, go down to the I/O button and click&hold until you see a pop-up. About two thirds of the way down you will see Ultrabeat.

  • Where can i find Sculpture and Ultrabeat? HELP!!!!!!!

SORRy im student of logic in my school , i would like to now in wich part of logic can i find the sculpurte and ultrabeat ?, which boton i need tell me the way PLEASE tnks

Go to the Windows menu list at the top of the page; click open Environment. That should open the Mixer. Go to any Audio Inst(rument) channel in the mixer. Above the fader, click and hold the horizontal bar right below where it says I/O. In that list, go to Stereo... then Logic... and take your pick.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ultrabeat question - help greatly appreciated

I am a brand new user and just figured out how to use ultrabeat. I was wondering how to make the loop visible in the midi region with all the other ones. I saw pictures in the manual that show the instrument tracks with the loops going, but I haven't figured out out how to do it. Since I haven't figured this out yet, I can't tell the loop when to stop or pause, which is limiting my music making ability greatly.
    Some help would be great!

After you've launched Ultrabeat, turned it on, and selected or created your groove you need to do two things.
    1) At the bottom left of the Ultrabeat window you'll see the word "pattern" and to its right a button with a bunch of dots on it. Click on this button and drag it to your track in the arrange window. You should now see a region displayed.
    2) Turn off Ultrabeat before closing the window. If you do not do so, Ultrabeat will continue playing the pattern endlessly.

  • Ultrabeat-Question

    Gday people,
When I am copying a pattern that I have made in the Ultrabeat Synth into the arrange window some MIDI notes fail to play, therefore I am left with a different pattern to what I have created in Ultrabeat....??????
For example I copy my pattern into the arrange window and every midi note in position 2 1 3 1 or in the Ultrabeat sequencer position 19 is mute?
I really need to find the solution to this problem so I can start recording audio with my proper pattern!
Quite frustrating, any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Regards
    Andrew

Yes i can definitely hear the notes in Ultrabeat and there is no mute button selected i checked that, its just when i copy the pattern to the arrange window the notes in postion 2 3 1 1 are mute although they are there when i check the piano roll window.
However i created a new channel strip in the mixer with a snare drum connected to it so i could change the eq levels and Logic created a new aux track, when i did this the pattern started playing properly but only when track 2 was highlighted if i click on track 1 the pattern again misses those four notes in position 2 3 1 1.
So i bounced the mix to disk with track two highlighted and got an audio file which plays the correct pattern some of the time? So im left with 3 bars out of 32 where those 4 notes dont play! weird??????? need an answer!
Im gonna try calling apple, but anymore help would be appreciated thanks!

  • Yet another LE 8/LP 8 comparison questions

    Good morning !
When I learned about Logic 8 this morning, I've browsed all the posts in this forum to learn about what differs between LE 8 and Logic Studio, to see which one best suits my needs. I still didn't see a clear answer to my interrogation, even though some topics were marked as "solved".
Here's what I found so far that comes only with Studio :
    - Surround sound, distributed audio, high-end control surface support and TDM support.
    - All the Jam packs.
    - All the printed manuals.
    So here are my questions:
    - It says on the product page that Express got new Pro instruments like Ultrabeat, but what about the Vintage instruments (EVP88, EVB3 and EVD6) ? It seems only Studio got them, am I right ?
    - I'm also guessing that Express doesn't get Mainstage ?
    - Express now comes with the complete EXS sampler, but does it gets the "Studio Sound Library" with it's 1300 EXS instruments or just a few presets ?
My main motivation to go "Studio" is the sounds. I don't care about surround sound creations of complex stuff like that. People are stating that Studio got the jampacks so that alone is worth getting the Studio package, but IMO, all the studio instruments and the sound library are worth even more than the jampacks, and would be the real deal-breaker for me if they were only available in Studio.
Sorry for the long post, thanks for your input !

You are right about the Vintage Instruments, they're Studio-only. Main Stage is Studio-only as well. I don't think Express comes with the whole EXS Library but I'm not sure. As far as the JamPacks, remember those include not only loops but new presets and EXS instruments as well. And talking about sounds, Express won't give you Sculpture which is a **** of a synth.
