Package in UML and Java

Is UML's package equivalent to Java package? If so, what Java counterpart is UML's component equivalent to?

After some surveys I find that
1. UML package is an "aggregation" of the inside class while Java package is not.
2. UML package has visibility modifiers while in Java , you have to implement package interface.
3. UML package can inherit another UML package
(MartinS, is the above what "isomorphic" you mean?)
To me, it is quite confusing, as I think a UML component can be implemented by a jar/war/zip, a java file which containing several classes, or a package in Java. And a UML package can also be implemented by jar/war/zip and package.
UML package and component are just high level or analysis model of the system while what you are selecting the Java counterparts to implement is a design choice.

Advanced java book needed

i need a throrough java book to add to my collection which goes over the most advanced of java programming (reflection, polymorphism etc...) in hopefully one book which has clear examples. if you know of one please give me isbn or title/author id be so grateful. thanks!

There is a book on Java thread ("Java Threads v2"?)
There are several books on java optimization (like use StringBuffer instead of String)
The Java Lang Spec 2 book.
The Java Virtual Machine 2 book.
The Java Native Inteface 2 book.
I suspect the Sedgewick Algorithms book is good, unless you already have one for another language.
There are some enterprise level books but no titles I can recall right now.
And naturally there are books that apply to advanced java work like some of the design books (like the UML stuff.)

Java book -4th Edition

Hi everyone,
I have a book called, "Java how to program 4th Edition, introducing Object-Oriented Design with UML and Design Patterns" by Deitel and Deitel.
I bought this book second hand. They currently have the 6th edition out and are working on the 7th edition.
Should I go buy the 6th edition? Or is the 4th edition sufficient for me as a beginner?

The basic concepts will not have changed.
However it might not cover new topics like Gernerics. The simples way to get round that is to ignore gernerics (and other 1.5 features) for the time being (they are not really a key item for a newbie) and compile with java -source 1.4.

UML for Java

Hi,
I'm looking for a good book (or URL) regarding J2EE application design using UML... That is, I know a bit about Java and a little about OO principles but I don't know where to start in terms of putting what I know into practice.
Would be grateful for some advice - and thanks in advance!

"implementing a set of UML documentation" - you mean a complete design? Yes, it can be a lot of work, depending on how rigorous you want to be. (For example, doing a complete UI design will become quite a challenge, indeed.)
Fowler has some fine thoughts about UML and its uses. He says there are two schools of thought:
(1) Sketchers, or folks who use snippets of UML to communicate their ideas to others. These folks are used to working on sheets of paper and whiteboards, and
(2) "UML as blueprint" folks want to treat UML designs like engineering drawings. Their goal is to take a complete design and either throw it over the wall for implementation, much like engineering firms used to heave drawings over the wall to manufacturing departments, or pass it to a model driven development package that would parse the UML and spit out a complete code base.
I'm firmly in the sketchers camp.
I don't think heaving drawings over the wall has proven very effective for engineering and manufacturing firms. I don't think it will be much better for software firms. Engineering is guided by the laws of physics and 1000s of years of experience. Computer science and software development isn't nearly at that level yet.
If you can get some good class diagrams and capture your most important use cases as sequence diagrams I'd say you were making a fine start.

Calendar server and address book server login fails with outlook connector

Hi all,
I have installed Java Communication Suite 5 according to the doc http://blogs.sun.com/factotum/resource/comms5-install-linux.html.
When i deploy the connector i get the pop ups saying "Server:servername:3080
Error:service not available" also
"Server:servername:80/uwc"
Error:service not available"
asking to login to calendar server and address book server.Clicking "OK" allows install.
In outlook i can send and receive mails but not the meeting requests.It gives the error "login to calendar server" when i create a meeting request.
Please let me know what i have to do to get rid of the error.The username and passwd entered is correct.

I would check through the outlook connector deployment configuration to verify that you have inserted valid information into all of the host & port fields - perhaps check the .ini file that is created to see if it has "Server" and "servername" listed.

After update June 28 of security and Java on 17in mac bk pro laptop cannot startup

After June 28 security and Java updates my 17 in mac book pro will not start up properly..I get a screen with text on the side and a window telling me to press the sart button to shut down and then press again to start up...( a gray panel comes down over the page before the window appears)...I have tried the install disc and done the disc and permissions repair...permissions repair could not repair "System/Library/Core Services/Remote Management ARDAgent/Contents/Mac OS/ARDAgent" a SUID file. What can I do?

Try to get into your machine and if you do, the first thing you do is backup your files to a external drive. (not TimeMachine) via regular drag and drop methods.
Disconnect this drive. and all others.
You can then c boot off the installer disk for your OS version and under the Utilities menu is Disk Utility > Repair Disk
Also you can totally reinstall OS X, shouldn't effect your programs or files (but backup all files just in case)
If that don't work, c boot off the installer disk again, this time use Disk Utility to Erase >format HFS+ Journaled with Security option > Zero All Data (will take some time) This will totally wipe the drive of everything and is a last ditch effort.
When it's done quit, and reinstlal OS X.
You'll have to go through the setup and reinstall your programs and files from backup. Secret is use the same user name and drive name as the previous time so your iTunes folder will work without a hitch.
If you restore from TimeMachine, it's possible whatever problem you had can return, but you can try and if it doesn't work, just repeat above without TimeMachine.
Later look at free Carbon Copy Clone your boot drive to a external HFS+ Journaled formatted drive and keep in a safe place, it hold option bootable, great if your hard drive bites it, or TimeMachine gets hosed. TM isn't bootable.

What's the relationship between JSP and Java?

cause the needed of internet web design, I started to learn html and Java server page.But I never have experience of JAVA programs. It's kind of hard for me to know and use JSP now.Should i need to learn Java first? Or can anyone tell me what's the good way for me to

Hi! JSPs allow Java code together with HTML in one document. The servlet engine "compiles" a JSP into a servlet prior to executing it. So, one must know Java prior to dealing with JSPs.
IMVHO, "Thinking In Java" by Bruce Eckel is a very good book for introduction to Java. You can download the electronic version at no charge from http://www.bruceeckel.com.
After you get a good handle on Java, "Professional Java Server Programming" (Wrox Press) can give you good information on servlets and JSPs, along with some other related topics.

What is a good java book

I am new to java. I had a class on it and the book we used in there was cumbersome and unorganized at best. I am wondering what other people have found are good books to help you get better at java. I need something that I can find answers to basic questions and also more advanced ones. If possible I'm looking for one that can also work like a reference book where if I need to know something specific that I can find that pretty quickly too.
Is there such a thing out there? Or am I looking for the impossible? Please help... anyone?

Building a best practice web application using ColdFusion and Jave EE

I've been tasked with rewriting a software using ColdFusion. I cannot seem to find a lot of information on best practice development in ColdFusion. I am an experience Java developer who has never used ColdFusion before. I want to build this application using a synergy of ColdFusion and Java EE technologies. Can someone recommend me a book that outlines how to developer in ColdFusion? Ideally this book assumes the reader is an experienced developer with no exposure to ColdFusion. Ideally the methods outlined in the book are still "best practice" methods.

The Java-application is a routing-software.
The SAP-user (the planner/coodinator) should choose a
customer and a worker/sales-person in an ABAP-application.
So this the SAP-user plans, which sales person drives to
which customer.
The ABAP-application should give this information to the java-application
which then plans the route! The user should not remark anything from
the communication between abap- and java-application.
