Ummmm is my mac hacked

I bought a new reconditioned macbook a month ago. It worked great until two weeks ago when I started getting random kernel panics, including at boot up. Long story short, it's getting new ram modules.
But,
I noticed between panics that the disk drive wasn't spinning down ever. And, that I was being asked for my password from apps I never have before (kcsync, which syncs with .mac) and had to rebuild my keychains.
I backed everything up to my old iBook using firewire disk, and now I notice the old iBook doesn't spin down.
More disturbing is some things I found in Activity Monitor, namely postfix running (I don't even know to turn it on) and several processes running as root. That last one's freaky because NetInfo Manager Security Menu shows Enable Root - which I assume means that root is currently disabled.
Am I being paranoid?
Thanks

As such, we can't clearly see who modified the files, but there are chances the Mac may have been hacked. The files/services can be disabled for safety. Open Terminal and type the following command:
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.RemoteDesktop.PrivilegeProxy.plist
Repeat the above step for each of the plist files. This will prevent modification of the files in future.

  • Is my mac hacked?

Hi guys, just checking if anyone can help me. I have a Mac Mini which is running 10.6.8. My issue is this, I was using my computer and I stepped out for a second to go to the bahroom. I put my mac to sleep before I went out. When I went back in, I saw in the my Computer account  on the screen and the computer was Typing on the password on it's own . I thought at first that perhaps that my headset just pressed the keyboard  when I left it, but even after I lift it up, it still continues to type on to the pssword. I tried to press enter and the screen turn black. I hit enter again and it shows my Account name and the password and still its typing something on to the password field.
I tried to press enter again and the screen turn black again. I hit enter again and it still shows my Account name and the password with something still typing on to the password field .
Thinking that someone is remotely accesing my mac, I pulled out the ethernet Cable from my mac and  the typing on the password still continued for about 3-4 seconds then it stopped. So is my my mac hacked or has a virus on it? Hope someone can enlighten me on this one. Thanks.

Oh, forgot, what all services do you have enabled in Sharing?
What setting do you allow in Security?
Installed any software from the Internet lately?

  • NEED HELP WITH MICROSOFT office/Mac/hacking.

NEED HELP: We installed Parrallels, then Windows 8.1 and go to install Office 365 and the computer won't accept it.  We call Microsoft and they tell us our system has been hacked at the time we installed Windows 8.1.  HELP!!!!! I have got to get may computer fix NOW>>>> I have a bid due in 2 hours and can't get office on my computer and now have a hacked computer..........NOT HAPPY WITH MICROSOFT.  Please can someone help

Only Microsoft can help you get a Microsoft product working. But if what you need is software than can do most of what the various modules of MS Office can do, check out LibreOffice, which is an MS Office compatible Office suite, can run directly on the Mac (no Windows necessary), and is free. Just be sure that if the bid will be an Office document which you'll send to someone else, that you save the document in an MS Office-compatible format so they can open and read it.

  • Mac Hacked, wanting to buy third party virus scan but afraid to use my credit card

My Mac 10.6.8 was hacked last night. All administrative passwords were changed essentially locking me out of my own computer. My personal AOL email was also attacked and the passwords changed. After a very helpful Apple employee helped me reset all my passwords, I went shopping for a good, relyable third party virus scan and/or remover. But now the quandry is: how do I buy a product to get rid of the problem using a credit card when the virus is still in my computer.
    I am at a loss.

and do you know if this is a new attack. have there been other cases?
People have come here with serious hacks on their Mac's, it happens but not that often.
So far there isn't a widespread issue like from malware, it might have been a isolated incident on your part.
Run the Sophos and it if finds anything good, but malware can make anti-virus lie. So a complete flush is still in order.
Anti-virus won't catch a hacker. To prevent hackers you need a intrusion detection system and there hasn't been a easy to use one for Mac's in ages.
i'm a bit scared about my personal info.
Don't put or do anything with computers or technology that your not willing to share with the world.
Apple, Google and Microsoft all have been successfully hacked. Nobody is perfect.
i've been checking activity moniter... is there anything i should be looking for.
If they are in EFI, no.
Acitiviy monitor only shows what is going on in OS X, not in EFI or firmware.
If you want to check OS X out. Then open Terminal and paste/press return and upload the file on your desktop/home folder to this website, they will check for known malware.
    http://triviaware.com/macprocess/
if i shut off my internet are they still capable of screwing me?
Yes of course, they can leave a timer and destroy your data or encrypt it etc.,
Being cut off the Internet doesn't stop them, just they lose contact, can't use your machine like a bot.
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-57409619-83/more-than-600000-macs-infected-with -flashback-botnet/
can this result in identity theft? should i proactively call the police?
You should file a report, with them, beause if someone does something in your name it's a matter of record you reported a intrusion into your computer.
You also should talk to your bank, freeze any credit cards you have used on the machine, any information that they can use to gain access to your accounts.
If they go into your machine and emails, they go for the money and whatever they can charge on you also.
This is why I say call in a professional, I'm not here 24/7 to assist and just lucky I saw your post.

  • Windows 7 Boot fails on Mac Pro 1,1 (long-standing issue)

i am having a long-standing problem on my first generation (1,1) mac pro where i have an installation of Windows 7 "under" boot camp. this installation involved some kind of minor mac hack that involved writing something to ISO and/or a CD Rom and then getting the installation onto my hard drive.
right now i am not sure if i should get rid of my tech guy, buy the new mac pro as soon as it comes out, boot into safe mode, re-install windows 7 or all of the above. help please?
lately if i try and Option Boot into this volume i get a Windows closed down incorrectly error and then i hit start windows normally it will crash out and restart the computer in mac OS (i.e. in another option boot volume).
at one point the windows 7 boot was not working at all and we discovered that i had to TURN OFF my G-Tech 3 TB backup drive in order to get the Mac to boot into Windows.
i am wondering if i should focus my energies by trying to boot into Safe Mode (and if so what to do if/when i get there) but also whether this appears to be an issue with the Mac Pro, the G-Tech external, Windows or some combination of all plus some user error thrown in for good measure.
i absolutely need to have a volume of windows 7 running and this is a long-standing issue at this point.
i am also running a Carbon Copy Cloner of this volume (the one that has all my OS's) on a daily basis to another internal hard drive (which i assume does not matter but i figure to mention it).
any ideas on what to do??
i am planning at some point to buy the next release of the Mac Pro so i can upgrade the desktop to Mountain Lion to match the laptop but it seems like i should be able to get this working on my end now...
    TIA
P.S. I /am/ also noticing that my User Photo periodically drops off and i just see two blank icons (one for me and one for Guest) when i have to login. i set it to a photo and then a week or two or a boot or two later it will disappear.

    hi all,
a report back after hacking my way through siberia over here:
turns out there are bad sectors on my drive that some third party program discovered.
the disk is on it's way back to WD with a replacement in the works.
fortunately my internal cloned backup got me back up to speed with mac os but unfortunately i was not yet setup to clone my windows boot camp backup so i will be installing windows 7 boot camp one more time on this drive...

  • WHY are MACS  so slow on  internet vs PC's??

I have a fast connection and even those that really know MACS (hack n tosh groups - meaning they really know how to edit KEXT files) say the same thing.
If I launch Safari, Firefox, whatever, on a MAC wired, (ethernet) it is always slower to load the page whereas on the same connection with a PC, its about instant, what is THIS problem? Also, at the Apple store, I have a friend that says that this is always a complaint from recent switchers. Windows just works so much faster and when you are used to a page loading in 200 milliseconds, 1-2 seconds DOES SEEM like a long time. I see this all the time.
Any ideas and will they ever fix this issue? It will download fine but for everyday browsing, it is just so much slower.
Thanks. Doubt there is a fix but if there is, would like to try and hear it.

My Mac is much faster than my work machine, and the work machine is on a T-3 line.
Also note, the nomenclature of Macs:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=503342&tstart=10
The speed on the internet varies based not on operating system but based on browser rendering engine, website design, status of driver/firmware for routers, corrupt cache and cookies of specific web browsers, and hardware being used.
To improve the connection on web browsing, use a browser designed to understand the specific website being browsed. My FAQ* should help on that account:
    http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html
To improve the connection on WiFi access see this FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/WIFI1048.html
Also empty caches, and remove unnecessary cookies from your web browser.
And make sure your disk space isn't too full*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
If performance is lacking still, tell us the website and the browser used, and we can tell you if an alternative works better, or if we think it is the hardware or firmware of the hardware you are using which is slowing you down.

  • Was my MAC attacked?

What is the best free software to clean up my mMacBook Pro. I think that I may have a problem. I'm not sure where to post this. I was running Snow Leopard. I kept getting error messages in mail that said : Cannot send to user" xnxnxnxnxnx @hotmial .com" i have hidden the real displayed names. My contacts kept getting the same message. HTere is and neverhas been any such hotmail account. It is a combination of my name, my husbands and part of my gmail address. first, I cancelled all my gmail and hot mail accounts. I created a new gmail account and then upgraded to Mountain Lion. I removed the false address from my "previous recipients list" but I sometimes still get this error message. Was my MAC hacked? How do I clean this up?

First, resist any inclination to download and install anything claiming to "clean up" your Mac. It won't help and is likely to result in more trouble.
The cause is probably the result of a misconfigured Mail account setting.
What is the exact wording of the message that appears? If is it actually Cannot send to user" xnxnxnxnxnx @hotmial .com" then clearly the problem is that hotmail is misspelled.
Obscure the user name but please post the dialog box's exact wording.
If your mailbox list is not shown in the Mail message viewer, choose Show Mailbox List from Mail's View menu:
Do you see an Outbox such as in the following screenshot?
Does the Outbox contain the troublesome message?

I tried to re-install games as well, restart my macbook but it did not work.I want to add that even before using bootcamp, the same thing happened to the screen. So, I do not think that there is a problem with windows 7.

  • Will my duel 800 G4 work with Leopard? Its fast than the 867 G4?

My duel 800 G4 was the top of the line when I purchased it, much faster than the 867 G4, which seems to be the limit on the new Leopard operating system. Will I still be able to upgrade? I have seen on other Apple forums many people asking the same question? I would appreciate any help.

Well, the minimum system requirements that Apple tells us really aren't always totally truthful. For example, they say OS 10.4 needs a minimum 256 MB Ram, and a DVD drive. That isn't true. I have tested this on a few different machines and found that the true minimum requirements are 192 MB for installation, 128 MB for running. On an ibook G3 500 mhz with 128 MB RAM, 10.4 ran surprisingly well. It was a little laggy of course, but it was stable and reliable. Also, you do not need a DVD drive, as you can use target disk mode to install the system from another computer (yes, the other computer needs a dvd drive...but I am speaking in specifics). What they say in their requirements is for the general public, but most of the time they aren't entirely dogmatic on those requirements.
If it were my guess, I would say 10.5 will probably run on your system. If they entirely cutoff installation based on clockspeed, I'm guessing some mac-hacker will figure it out.
Also, as far as your computer being top of the line "when you bought it"-that's the issue. Basically everyone's mac was top of line or near top of the line at it's release. But we all know the computer industry is not a slow moving market. Your computer can be outdated in a few months or a year. I helped a guy buy his first mac a few months ago (imac). 2 days later Apple released the new imac. That's the nature of computers. And you really can't expect Apple to keep supporting machines approaching 7 years old (my ol' Gigabit). They want to be at the head of the market, and pushing the old out is some times the only way to do it.
You always have the option to upgrade your system. Go and look at some cpu upgrade cards. They aren't all that expensive. For $400 I turned my dual 450 to a dual 1.4 Ghz (and don't forget the level 3 cache). Third party upgrades are what keep us old timers goin.

  • Apache cannot load mod_jk.so

Wondering if anyone has bumped into this?
    I did a vanilla install of cf10 on mac 10.5.8 on top of the mac-installed apache webserver (i.e. the one that comes stock with the OS, not a macports version or custom compile) ... a few vhosts are defined. cf9 is already installed and working peachy. Install goes fine but the 'switch to the web admin' stage fails and the webserver doesn't restart. Running an apache configtest barfs out the following;
Syntax error on line 509 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 2 of /private/etc/apache2/mod_jk.conf: Cannot load /Applications/ColdFusion10/config/wsconfig/1/mod_jk.so into server: dlopen(/Applications/ColdFusion10/config/wsconfig/1/mod_jk.so, 10): no suitable image found.  Did find:\n\t/Applications/ColdFusion10/config/wsconfig/1/mod_jk.so: unknown required load command 0x80000022
Commenting out the httpd.conf include to mod_jk.conf allows the webserver to start up again.
I've read that the mac hack of apache webserver includes 'apxs' in a manner that won't compile correctly but I'm a bit out of my depth with the apache stuff. Any ideas would be really appreciated

I compiled mod_jk from source, pointed the mod_jk.conf at this, retstarted apache and this time got a clean configtest, However, I'm still but unable to get the webserver to respond, despite it retsarting okay

  • Screen dimming - can't turn off with OS X Leopard?!

Hi I am not sure about others, but how come my Leopard OS X is not able to tweak so that the screen does not dim after a period of inactivity?
The screenshot of my mac under System Preferences is entirely different from the one below!
    http://media2.smashingmagazine.com/images/mac-hacks/Picture%202.png
    (Via: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/06/04/30-must-have-tweaks-for-your-mac/)

you need to update your system to at least 10.5.6. if you are brave, try 10.5.7, but always use the combo installers.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10-5-6_ComboUpdate
apple is prone to adding to & changing menus. with such an old build, you need to update first before inquiring about such things.

  • AWT Popup Menu in Fullscreen Exclusive + JOGL

Our application runs in Fullscreen Exclusive mode and uses JOGL. We want the user to be able to access right-click Popup menus like in other applications. (Obviously, this isn't a game; but I figured I'd post here because game developers are the only ones likely to be familiar with Fullscreen Exclusive.)
On Windows, I was pleasantly suprised to find that popupMenu.show() just works when I'm in Fullscreen Exclusive. The menu appears, works correctly, etc.
On Mac OS X 10.3+, the menu does not appear. I've developed a clumsy workaround (basically, go out of fullscreen exclusive to show the menu, and then go back in when mouse events start coming again). Frankly, the way it works on a Mac is what I expected on the PC. I wouldn't expect a Popup Menu (being another window) to be able to appear over a fullscreen exclusive window.
My question is this: Is the Windows behavior a bug? Is it video driver dependent? (It seems to work OK with all the machines we've tested on... ATI, NVIDIA, Intel) Should I be doing my Mac hack on the Windows platform to avoid some unforseen problem?
Also, any idea what Linux or other platforms would do?

I am not sure why that works in one OS and not the others.
All I can say is that if it was a game, we would draw the popup menu ourself within the frame in our rendering loop, that is garunteed to work in all OS's. But your probably using AWT or SWING components. Sounds like it may be a compadibility issue, I would check the bug lists to see if that is a known issue that is being worked on.
