Un-installing Virus software

I need to un-install the Mac virus software on my iMac in order to install my IDSN. However, I can't seem to figure out how to do this and my IDSN won't override/install without me doing so. Any advice?

Hi alexandrinek
Welcome to Discussions.
The easiest way is to find the CD or installer package that you first used and run it again, choosing Uninstall, if such an option exists, but I'm confident it would have that.
If you don't have the Virus CD installation disk, but got it off the internet, you could download it again, and select Uninstall from it.
If you are having difficulties installing IDSN, could you not 'pause' or switch off this Virus program? You may need to go to your Account startup items and choose to deselect it from the list, then restart your computer.
There are some options for you.

  • Whats the best anti virus software at the moment?

I need to install virus software on my laptop, can anyone help me out with the best one to use at the moment.

I was using kaspersky internet security 2010. But due to some reason or another it wasnt getting rid of a keylogger I had downloaded from somewhere. After installing Avast! antivirus it instantly got rid of it and I shortly uninstalled Kaspersky afterwards.
Not to mention its free, the reviews on cnet give it 4.8/5 stars

  • When installing third party software, how do I temporarily turn off the factory installed virus sw and firewall?

when installing third party software, how do I temporarily turn off the factory installed virus sw and firewall?  Is it necessary on a Mac to do so?  I come from the Windows world and am still in the learning curve on the Mac.

Correct.  I have not installed ANY other software for anti-virus, etc.  I want to install a Synch app for my HTC phone to sych with MS Outlook 2011 installed on my Mac.    HTC will not synch with it otherwise.  That was really the basis for my question....if installing a non Apple app can be done without messing with factory settings on the Mac.  In Windows I remember that I needed to disable Norton and the Firewall in order for installation to occur.
    Thanks.

  • OS 10.6 Server - What virus software to install?

I run a small network with macs and pc's hooked up to the 10.6 snow server.
What virus software is best to install on the server to look for mac and pc virus's and malware?
    Thanks

Mac boxes are generally immune to Microsoft Windows malware.
ClamAV can help you keep your shares clean of Windows malware, and the usual Windows AV client tools running on the Windows boxes can keep the Windows issues mostly under control, as well.
If you want suggestions for Windows AV tools, I'd suggest having a chat with the Microsoft folks.
If your Windows clients have anti-malware tools, then those should deal with infections from files residing on the shares. You may want to have just one Windows box configured to scan the shares, but that's an optimization.
But if you have your wallet open as wide as it appears to be, the anti-malware sales folks will find all sorts of stuff to sell you. MacAfee, Norton and Sophos are around for Mac OS X Server (and supersede what the integrated ClamAV provides), and opinions of these will vary. I run ClamAV, but then I also don't have a huge population of Windows boxes around, and those that are around have their own AV, and those Windows boxes generally aren't permitted to wander the open network.

  • Firefox update won't work, re-install doesn't work, safe mode doesn't work, Not firewall / virus software

    I had Firefox v 16 or 17 on windows 7
A few weeks ago it told me to update, I did, and then it wouldn't load when I clicked on the icon
I used system recovery to get back to the prior version. I just ignored the "update firefox" messages for a while.
I decided to try to fix the problem and completely un-install firefox (all bookmarks, etc), re-install the newest version, and now again it won't load when I click on the icon.
(((And i have no system restore points that still have firefox)))
In the task manager firefox.exe *32 shows up for about 30 seconds after I click on the icon
    I've un-installed, re-installed 10 times with no luck
I tried entering firefox in safemode (both by pressing F8 in system startup and also by holding shift down while I click on the desktop icon).
I've tried using chrome (which loads but freezes) and opera (which won't even install)
    IE works
I have allowed firefox through the firewall, allowed all permissions for my user, and turned off my virus software entirely
I searched for the firefox profiles folder but did not locate it (It must have been deleted with my bookmarks, etc)
I scanned my computer using the microsoft security scanner suggested by mozilla, located 5 infected files, deleted those files, un-installed and re-installed firefox and still nothing
I have turned off everything in the task manager that appears to be non-essential. I've googled the things that have no description and found they are essential.
Am I doomed to a lifetime of IE?

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a '''''Clean reinstall'''''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X has got its own security systems, so you don't need any antivirus. Furthermore, they will only slow down your computer. If you want more information, read > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
If you want an antivirus, install ClamXav, but you don't need an antivirus

Do I need to install virus protection software on my MacBook Air?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You do not need to install additional security software. OS X already comes with security software to keep your Mac safe. See > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
However, you should keep OS X and all your applications updated, and do not visit strange websites. Also, be careful with public networks, where your Mac is more vulnerable.

  • Hi. I run parallels, should I install anti virus software?

    Hi
I run parallels on my mac, should I install inti virus software on the Windows 7 I am using?

This does not make it any more or less neccessary to run anti-virus software on the Mac itself. You must install some kind of Windows anti-virus software in the virtual machine, however, if you are going to be using the Windows system in that virtual machine to go online or deal with files obtained from questionable sources. If that Windows system can be used in isolation, then you should be okay to skip the anti-virus software.

  • I have installed Microsoft Office, do I now need anti virus software

I have installed Microsoft Office on my Macbook Air, do I now need to install a suitable anti virus software?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course not. It's still safe to use your Mac without an antivirus. OS X has got its own security systems, so you don't need any antivirus. If you want more information about Mac OS X and viruses, see > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
If you want an antivirus, download ClamXav or Sophos, but you don't need them. I only recommend them if you have files you will transfer to a PC

  • Installing anti virus software

Does anyone have experience with Norton Anti Virus Software for the Mac?  I am running OS X Maveracks with a Parallels Destop 9 VM running Windows 7 with Norton 360 Security (a hold over from when I migrated to the Mac).  I am thinking I would like to install some form of Antivirus software on the MAC - Norton recommends their Norton Antivirus 12 for Mac.
    Couple of questions -
    1.  With the MAC OS X Is it really necessary or recomended to install Anti virus on a Mac?
    2.  Does any one know of issues with compatibility issues with installing Antivirus software on both the MAC and Windows VM?
    3.  Is there a single Antivirus product that can be installed which will cover both the MAC and Windows environments?
Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Honestly, there's no reason to install AV software on the Mac.  When I first switched to Mac many years ago, I thought it was needed and learned afterwards that it really isn't.  I haven't had any AV software on any of my Mac for years now.
There are some that say you should have it, but it's really there to protect files/emails that you may be getting/sending to Windows users.  But that's why they need AV software in the first place!
And last, to my knowledge there are still no "true" Mac viruses in the wild.  There are some trojans and whatnot that I know of, but they all need user interaction to actually install so as long as you use good common sense, this shouldn't be a problem.
That's my opinion, however, and others may differ.

  • HT203163 I cannot access iTunes store from my laptop. I could for years but suddenly - no. Have removed all recently installed software. Have uninstalled and re-installed both my anti-virus software and iTunes. Have allowed pop-ups. Have flushed the DNS.

I cannot access iTunes store from my laptop. I could for years but suddenly - no.
Have removed all recently installed software. Have uninstalled and re-installed both my anti-virus software and iTunes.
    Have allowed pop-ups.
    Have flushed the DNS. Nothing.
Still can't access the store. Please help!

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • Is it necessary to install an anti-virus software for mac?

    As above. Thanks.

The only reason I have ever seen to install
anti-virus on my Mac was to satisfy my corporate IT
guys requirements that I am running up-to-date
anti-virus software before putting my Mac on their
    LAN.
I basically launch it if they want to see it, then
    close it...because its useless
If your company's IT staff is not so bright, write up a shell script that echos stuff as if its scanning for virus. Something like
    #!/bin/bash
    echo "Scanning for virus"
    sleep 2
    echo "..."
    sleep 4
    echo "0 Virus(es) found"
    exit
stick that in a file, chmod +x, run from terminal with 'sh files' or './file'
