Un-removable "other" space

I have a problem of un-removable "other" space.
After trying many things, I've done what seems to be the final option:
I've restored my iPhone as new, I didn't restore it from backup. When I connected the iPhone to iTunes I saw that "other" space was removed.
now I synced it to transfer all the apps and music (I didn't restore from backup)
After the  sync was complete, I found that the "other" space to be 3.8G, again !!
How can that be ? The size of my entire media library is less than this!! Where does this space comes from ??
Please please help how to remove this....

Hi ,
That the trivial explanation but what should I do with it?
All the apps in the library are at their original size, without any additional data.
Regarding the music, should I erase everything and build the entire library again?
The problem will just come back... A year ago I didn't have this problem and the music library was pretty much the same...

It could be that Restrictions are set on the iPhone to prevent deleting apps:
    Open the Settings App
    General
Restrictions (the button will indicate if it is on, and you will be prompted to type the security code)
Either disable Restrictions or Turn Deleting app back on

  • What is the normal amount of GB of Other Space for a new 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3? Also, will iOS 7 slow down/drain the battery of my device?

My Other storage space was at 2.84 GB after i loaded all my music/apps onto a recently purchased 32 GB Ipod touch 5 Generation with iOS 6.1.3.  Resetting the settings and removing the music and apps did not help reduce the Other space.  I restored to a backup and got my Other storage space down to almost 400 MB.  When I started syncing music it grew 500-ish MB.  Each time I sync, the Other grows a bit more.  This is really irritating.
The official listed available GB on my 32 GB is 28.22 GB (not including Other), so now I am irritated knowing that this Other is taking up my space when I didn't even have 32 GB of free space to begin with. So 28.22 - 2.84GB = 25.38 GB.
I want to restore to a new device to see if that helps, but do not want to upgrade to i0S7.  Is there any way to do this?
If I upgrade to i0S 7 I am worried it might slow my ipod or drain the battery faster.  Will it do that?  The ipod is expensive and I dont want it to go downhill and obsolete on me because it can't handle a better operating system.

Less than 1 1/5 GB is normal. It does grow with time.

  • Removing extra spaces from a long document

    Hello
I have seen a number of find/change and GREP formulas to do similar things. I have NO scripting or coding experience and have labored to understand GREP.
So I am a little afraid to use it as I don't know what all the modifiers refer to (I do have a printout of some neat GREP cheatsheets like Mike Witherell's that I can absorb until I obtain a good reference )
I need something I can copy and paste into either find/change or GREP dialog that will do the following in less than 12 steps (hopefully) without doing something catastrophic like removing all of my paragraph marks (which I almost did using someones GREP expression)
No spaces before any comma, period, exclamation mark, question mark, colon, semicolon
One space only after any of those
One Space before any opening parenthesis and one space after the closing parenthesis
No space after the opening parenthesis or before the closing parenthesis
Remove any double or extra spaces ( en, em etc.)
    Remove any commas before parentheses
Remove any spaces after a paragraph mark
    I think that's it
I did find this one recently (Maybe Jongware?)
    [~m~>~f~|~S~s<~/~,~3~4%]{2
Which from my dim understanding addresses em, en, flush and hair space ,  nonbreaking space ,figure space, third space--not sure of the rest. Really this is way over my head.
I know this will be a piece of cake for you guys
    Thanks

A: Removing extra spaces from a long document

Peter is too modest, he's doing just great.
No space BEFORE-One Space after ---period,semicolon,colon, exclamation, question mark,CLOSING Parenth,Bracket,Brace, single & Dbl. quotation marks
Find (\s)([.,;:!\)\]\}~}~]])
Replace with $2
No space AFTER-One Space Before----OPENING bracket,brace,parenthesis,Dbl & single quotes
Find ([\[\{\(~{~[])(\s)
Replace with $1
These remove the space before/after but do not automatically add a space after/before.
In the first case, you could add a space right after the '$2' in the Replace With string, but it already may have a space, in which case you suddenly have two. One alternative is to optionally remove it with the Find string (add it as an optional match) and always add it with the Replace string, but remember that this string will only be found if there is a space preceding it. That way you'd only check the space after in cases where there was a bad space before.
So I propose you add another two find/changes to add the space, only when necessary.
One Space After: find
([.,;:!\)\]\}~}~]])(?!\s)
replace:
$0 [followed by one single space]
One Space Before: find
(?<!\s)([\[\{\(~{~[])
replace:
[one single space] $0
Color-coding with my WhatTheGrep might make it just a tad clearer what's going on in that jumble of codes:
(1 [ .,;:! \) \] \} ~} ~] ] 1) (?!! \s !)
and
(?<!<! \s <!) (1 [ \[ \{ \( ~{ ~[ ] 1)
(Orange is lookahead/lookbehind, blue is a regular escaped character, pink is an InDesign special character, green is normal grouping parentheses, and lavender is a character group.)

  • I had to do a restore on my PC, and therefore reinstall iTunes. Now that I have done so, my "other" space has increased to 6.50 GB for no reason, and I can no longer sync the same amount of music as previously. I have tried all the fixes I can find.

Everything used to fit.  It was only after I removed the music to sync because this is considered a "new" library that the "Other" space appeared to this extent.

Since this first message, the "Other" space has increased exponentially.  The first time, after the "restore", it increased to over 9 GB.  Later, I tried a minor restore again, and now it's over 10 GB.  I've seen someone suggest that text messages are to blame.  If my text messages are suddenly taking up 4 GB of space, I think we've got bigger problems.

  • How can you create a paragraph style that removes all spaces and forces everything to lower case?

    Hi,
Is there anyway of using GREP (or some other magical wizardry) to create a paragraph style that automatically removes all spaces and forces words into lower case?
Strange request i know....I'm wanting to use it for datamerged email addresses.
    Thanks

so doing it through InDesign is a work around I'm exploring.
Excel has the 'LOWER' function and the ability to record macros for a quick find/replace on the spaces - so that's definitely a good option if it can't be solved purely in InDesign.
You can change case via scripting in InDesign. This AppleScript (OSX only) will set the case of the selected paragraph style to lower. It would be possible to add some code that would strip spaces as well:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
        activate
set StyleList to name of every paragraph style of active document
        set myDialog to make dialog with properties {name:"Document Paragraph Styles"}
        tell myDialog
            tell (make dialog column)
                tell (make border panel)
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        make static text with properties {static label:"Choose a Style", min width:150}
                    end tell
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        set myPresetsDropdown to make dropdown with properties {string list:StyleList, selected index:0, min width:150}
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        set myResult to show myDialog
        if myResult = true then
--+1 gets the correct name because list starts at 0
set myStyle to item ((selected index of myPresetsDropdown) + 1) of StyleList
        else
            return
        end if
        destroy myDialog
        tell active document
set myStyle to paragraph style myStyle
repeat with j from 1 to (count stories)
repeat with i from 1 to (count paragraphs in story j)
if applied paragraph style of paragraph i of story j is myStyle then
--defines a variable to replace the generic this_text parameter in the handler
set SCText to the contents of paragraph i of story j
set contents of paragraph i of story j to my change_case_of(SCText)
                    end if
                end repeat
            end repeat
        end tell
    end tell
    on change_case_of(this_text)
        set the_comparison_string to "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
        set the_source_string to "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"
        set the_new_text to ""
        repeat with thisChar in this_text
set x to the offset of thisChar in the_comparison_string
if x is not 0 then
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & character x of the_source_string) as string
            else
set the_new_text to (the_new_text & thisChar) as string
            end if
        end repeat
        return the_new_text
    end change_case_of

  • How do I remove a space before the first word in a sentence using find and replace or GREP?

Right, so I am laying out a document in inDesign from a word document and it has a space before every first word in a sentence. It is really annoying and I need a quick way to get rid of them. I wasn't too sure how to do it with find/change but I am sure there is a way in GREP if someone can help me. I have included an image so that people can see exactly what I mean.

The ^ location works for all paragraphs.
But a note to the OP, there is a sample script called FindChangeByList that removes leading and trailing spaces as well as extra spaces after punctuation, all in one go. But if you want to continue to use a GREP find/change to remove leading space, I'd modify Joel's suggestion to ^\s+ to get those cases where the user typed multiple spaces as well.
And don't forget there are actually legitimate places for leading tabs, which both the script and this GREP will find and remove, so be careful.

  • Having 200+ GB of "Other" Space in HD.. How to get Rid of it?

So I have 200 GB of other in my storage and Ive tried OmniDisk to get rid of stuff but nothing is making it have more space. Anyone have any other ideas to how to get rid of all this other space?

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.
