    By internal, I assume you're referring to your systems (boot) drive. Is it, by chance, a partitioned dive?
    Also…although many people successfully use their systems drives as scratch disks, over time you'll have better results using a dedicated drive for your media.
    Good luck.

  • Hi, I'm trying to exported edited photos to an external hard drive... when i try to add the hard drive through lightroom it says selected device is not writable.... well i manage to write on it with everything else in the world! please help.

    I can export the photos to the desk top but when i then select the folder and drag to drop on the hard drive it does not give me the option. If i go to copy folders out of the hard drive to the desktop i can do so no problem (its not a problem with the hard drive to my knowledge).
    Please help its driving me away from both lightroom which i really like and from Macs in general!!!!

    I found that it was due to the format of the drive, NTFS not being compatible with Mac. I am not converting the drive to a FAT format.

  • Image Capture and Preview "folder not writable" error importing to shared folder

    I'm running 10.8.5 on a Late 2012 model Mac Mini. I'm trying to create a folder under my home directory where my wife can import pictures using Image Capture or Preview while logged into her account. I've tried setting permissions on the folder by setting POSIX permissions and ACLs from the command line, and also by setting ACLs using Get Info in Finder, but it seems as though both Image Capture and Preview ignore the ACLs and instead rely solely on the POSIX permissions for everyone/other (even when a relevant group is set). Unless the POSIX permissions for everyone/other are "rwx" Image Capture and Preview both give an error that the import failed, and /var/log/system.log shows errors that the "folder is not writable". I'd like to be able to set this up without making the folder and the files in it writable by everyone. My understanding was that ACLs should take precedence over POSIX permissions, but even the POSIX permissions don't seem to be getting handled properly, because the group is ignored. Any help or explanation of what's happening would be appreciated.
    Here's an example with details:
    Suppose we have the users alice and bob. We want to set permissions on the directory /Users/bob/importdir such that Alice can import files from a camera there using Image Capture (or Preview, either would do), but don't want to relax the permissions more than necessary.
    We create a group named bob_and_alice
    We set the following permissions on /Users/bob:
    POSIX: rwxr-xr-x, owner=bob, group=staff (i.e. default POSIX permissions)
    ACLs:
    0: group:everyone deny delete
    1: group:bob_and_alice allow list,search,readattr,readextattr,readsecurity
    2: user:alice allow list,search,readattr,readextattr,readsecurity
    "Get Info" shows "Read & Write" for bob and "Read Only" for alice, bob_and_alice, staff, and everyone
    We set the following permissions on /Users/bob/importdir:
    POSIX: rwxrwxr-x owner=bob, group=bob_and_alice
    ACLS: (these are already probably more permissive than should be necessary)
    0: group:bob_and_alice allow list,add_file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,re adextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit
    1: user:alice allow list,add_file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,re adextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity,writesecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit
    "Get Info" shows "Custom" for both alice and bob_and_alice, "Read & Write" for bob, and "Read Only" for everyone
    Alice opens a Terminal and cd's to /Users/bob/importdir. Alice can create and delete files in this directory.
    Now Alice opens Image Capture and with our camera connected we try to import a photo to /Users/bob/importdir. Image Capture shows an error dialog with the text "Import error. An error occurred while importing. The item 'foo.jpg' was not imported." /var/log/system.log shows the message: "Jul 20 22:12:34 computer_name.local Image Capture[32804]: Document destination folder is not writable" If instead Alice uses Preview it shows an error dialog with the text "The selected folder is not writable" and /var/log/system.log shows two error messages:
    Jul 20 22:23:45 computer_name.local Preview[33280]: Document destination folder is not writable
    Jul 20 22:23:45 computer_name.local Preview[33280]: Encountered error during image import: Error Domain=com.apple.ImageCaptureCore Code=-9934 "The selected folder is not writable" UserInfo=0x7ffda4881f00 {NSLocalizedDescription=The selected folder is not writable}
    Now we change the POSIX permissions on /Users/bob/importdir to: rwxrwxrwx
    The import succeeds with both Image Capture and Preview
    Can anyone explain what's going on here? Is there another reasonable way to do this without, moving this shared directory to /Users/shared?

    Did you figure out how to fix this?

  • I do not have permission to write in my external Hard Drive

    Hello everybody.
    I have recently bought a MacBook Pro (15, 2.16 Ghz with OS X 10.4.9) and I have a Beyond Micro 300Gb external Hard drive that I have been using with my PC. This drive has a Windows NT File System.
    When I first plugged it to the Mac, I changed its name to recognize it better. Now, I am not able to transfer documents from my Mac to it, but I am able to do so through the PC.
    Am I done something wrong?
    Am I blocked this drive? (Once open, I see a pen crossed on the lower left corner)
    And if so, Could I unblocked it to make it writable?
    When I try to transfer any documents with the Mac I get a message saying that I can't do it and because I do not have permission. (I am the administrator).
    I read a previous posting talking about a similar problem, but I really couldn't understand the solutions and/or differences beteween NTFS, FAT 32, MS-DOS and MacFuse (I am a complete novice).
    I also tried (as suggested in the posting) to use the Disk Utility to set the permissions from there, but when I select the external Hard Drive all the options are dimmed. Also, the info panel says I only have permissions to write, having no other available alternatives to choose from.
    The question is: How can I make this drive available to both Operating Systmes without erasing all the information inside (format)?
    Thank You in advance.
    Cordially,

    I have just intalled MacFuse (with Tools and Core) and it does allow me now to read and write in my external Hard Drive.

  • Read-Only SD Card(s) - used to be able to read/write

    Hello all,
    I have searched teh forum and found a few similar threads but I believe my case is different.
    For all 3 of my SD cards, they appear as read-only in my MBP (running 10.6.8), whether I connect them via the built-in card reader or via my camera (Panasonic GF1) hooked up to my MBP via USB.
    I used to be able to import photos into iPhoto and then delete them from the card but this does not work any more (I do not even get prompted any more) as the card(s) is now read-only (Get Info tells me "Sharing & Permissions: You can only read"). Indeed if I try to delete, drag and drop a file onto it or even erase from disk utility, it will not let me.
    Now, most threads dealing with this issue point to the card reader being faulty (or even the lock switch being in the wrong position). I am fairly sure this is not the case here as:
    1) the behaviour occurs both through the built-in card-reader and the camera connection and
    2) the camera does not "think" that the card is read-only, it can take new pictures, delete or format the card (note that I tried to "lock" the card with the switch and in that case the camera complains and cannot do anything with the card).
    Moreover this occurs with all three cards.
    On the other hand, my IPhone connected via USB is not locked to "read-only" (for example IPhoto asks me and does delete photos after import).
    Thanks very much for any help on this - this is very puzzling!

    If you are using a DSLR camera, like for example a Canon 60D, there may be an option to use a "Low-Level Formatting" on the card. This should make it writable when putting it into the computer.
    To test this (and confirm it works) I did the following:
    Hardware Used:
    Canon 60D camera body
    Sandisk 32GB SDHC Extreme Card
    Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2010 model) with built-in SD card slot.
    Steps:
    Place SDHC card into camera (SD card may work as well). Navigate through menu until you arrive at settings that allow the camera to format the card. There may be an option to format it "low-level", which you would then select.
    -Note that all files on card will be erased permanently.-
    After the camera formats, eject the card from the camera, and place inside the built-in SD slot on the Macbook.
    The card should automatically mount, containing both read and write priviledges.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can I control Read/Write for BegBalance under the same Scenario in different Years?

    As we know, we can set 'Start Year/Period' and 'End Year/Period' on a scenario member, e.g. Budget, to control whether planners can input data under this scenario.
    However, we can only choose years and month from Jan to Dec. BegBalance can't be chosen.
    Assuming a form putting Year dimension as a page, Scenario and BegBalance, Jan to Dec as column, Account as row.
    If planner chooses budget year in the page, every column from BegBalance to Dec is writable.
    The problem is, when planner chooses current year in the page, Jan to Dec is read-only, but BegBalance is still writable.
    This will make the planner confusion and put the data in a dangerous position.
    Is there any idea to avoid this situation?
    Thanks.

    You can disable (write) BegBalance for that Scenario by unchecking "Include BegBalance".

  • External hard drive to be read and write for MAC & PC

    All,
    I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and have always used a PC until now, which i used an external hard drive to use to copy files to. My mac does not let me write to this hard drive.
    What do i have to do to be able to read and write to this hard drive on my MAC & PC?

    your drive is formatted NTFS. OS X can only read but not write to NTFS drives. you can reformat it FAT which is writable from both OS X and windows. (this will wipe the drive of course). However, FAT is an inferior format with a number of limitations. another option is to install macfuse and NTFS-3g on your mac
    http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
    It will let you write to NTFS formatted drives.

  • How many ways to read and write a local variable in a called VI?

    Ciao!
    I'm producing my first TestStand sequence. It is called "FirstAttempt" and it is made by a single step which calls a VI. One of the first dilemmas i encountered realizing this sequence is how to read and write a local variable (created going in Variables -> Locals ('FirstAttempt') -> <right click to insert local>) in the called VI.
    The first way (the only one i tried) is to create a control and an indicator on the VI front panel, connect them to their respective terminals in the connector pane and then specify (going in Step Settings -> Module) that these connectors (shown in the Parameter Name column) are linked to the local variable (selected in the Value column).
    The second way (not tried) consists in using TestStand API: create a Sequence Context reference on the VI front panel, link it to a property node in the block diagram, select the property "Locals" and extract from this the local variable name and value which, i think, can be readable and writable.
    So...
    Are the shown ways correct?
    Are there other ways?
    Knowing that a "local" variable can be considered "global" within the whole sequence, is there the possibility to simply create a reference to the local variable and use the reference in the called VI block diagram in order to save space in the connector pane (if using method 1) or in the block diagram (if using method 2)?
    Thanks!
    Message Edited by aRCo on 09-17-2009 05:09 AM

    Hi,
    Before TestStand 3 you would use the second way you quoted as its the only way.
    But now you would use the first way you quoted. You may still what to pass the SequenceContext if you were going to use the TestStand API. For TestStand 3.x and above you would use this way as the first chose. (Personnelly, I would not pass the SequenceContext into a VI if I know it was never going to be used in that VI.)
    Not sure I understand your final comment, maybe you are liking it to passing the reference of a control to a subVI so that the control can be updated from within the subVI.
    If this is the case and you had a situation where you had a step that was running in parallel with the rest of the steps in the sequence either as a separate thread or execution and were dependent on the contents of the  local variable changing from that parallel running step, then you would have to use the API SetVal method to change the local.
    Hope this is clear.

  • Can only read external hard drive, not write to

    Hi
    I have a Mac Book Pro and a 60GB external Hard Drive which I use to transfer files between my Win PC (!!) and my Mac. transferring files from PC to Mac is fine using the HDD but when I try to copy files from my Mac to the HDD it says I cannot write to the drive as it is read only. How do i make it writable as well as readable. Its formatted as Windows NT Filesystem if that helps.

    mp_photo wrote:

    Hi,
    that is the culprit.
    Mac OSX is only capable of reading from NTFS drives but can not write to them.
    Possible solutions:
    Reformat the external drive to FAT32 (using Disk Utility and 'MS-DOS'),
    but be aware of the the size limit of 4GB for a single file
    use MacFuse: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
    Caution: reformatting the drive will delete all files on it, so make a backup before.

  • Disk unable to intialize - Media is write protected

    Dear community,
    My WD external harddrive has suddenly stopped working after coming from Europe. I plugged in the HD into my laptop and I noticed that it does not show up under My Computer, only under Safely Remove Hardware and Devices. So I searched forums a bit and a couple
    have said that I should go to Disk Management and see if my drive is there.
    Turns out the HD is listed there, however as 'Disk 1: Unknown 1.379 GB, Not Intialized'. There is no blue bar either, it just says the size of the disk and that it is unallocated (it does not have a Volume letter).
    When I start up Disk Management it gives me a notification:
    Initialize Disk
    You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it.
    Select Disk:
    Disk 1
    Use the following partition style for the selected disks:
    MBR (Master Boot Record)
    GPT (GUID Partition Table)
    So I click on MBR and press OK, and it gives me the error 'The media is write protected'.
    So I go into the registry under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePolicies
    and change the value in 'writeprotect' to 0, and then I reboot my computer. Same error.
    I can't even reformat the disk because I cannot find such option, not that I want to really, because I have 1.2 TB worth of data on there that I want to keep so losing the information on this Drive will be quite.... frustrating.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks a lot for your advice & effort. The same message "Diskpart failed to clear disk attributes".
    Here is the file of $vds$.log (only a last part of the file). How can I attached the file, I can't find your email add.  thanks again.

  • Run with user privileges but write to restricted folder

    In Windows Server 2008 R2 (and in an Active Directory domain), the login and logoff scripts are run with user privileges.
    Suppose that I run script1.ps1, when user1 logs in; I need that script1.ps1 is associated to user1, because it will write some informations about that user: it modifies a log file in a folder. Anyway, script1.ps1 will be run with user1 privileges.
    I obviously made that file and that folder accessible (readable/writable) to user1: but I actually don't want the user to modify that log file. I would like that
    only the script could do it.
    Is there a way to work around this problem? Maybe should I run script1.ps1 in a different way?

    Henry.  You can add a subscription to a server that subscribes t event log entries on user computers.  Subscribe to the logon/logoff events. Now you have a central repository of logon and  logoff events.
    There is no way to accomplish what you are asking to do.  Any file that can be written to in logon script or during a user session can be changed by the user.
    Bil is suggesting a "startup" script that runs when the user logs on and not when the computer starts.  A user startup script runs as the user and not system.
    Another method is to schedule a script that run at logon.  This can run as system and write to a file that the user cannot change.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Write to file on server from app

    Am trying to write to a file on server from an application like this:
    java.net.URL url = new java.net.URL("http://www.rikif.dk/test.txt");
    URLConnection conn = url.openConnection();
    conn.setUseCaches(false);
    conn.setDoOutput(true);
    PrintStream out =
    new PrintStream(conn.getOutputStream());
    out.print("sdfsdf");
    out.flush();
    out.close();
    But nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

    No exceptions.. "Unlike other output streams, a PrintStream never throws an IOException".
    You can write a file through HTTP into a web server? It does not make sense really.. is the file writable in the web server?
    And why be writable - anyone would be able to write it then.
    You can achieve that through sockets. A java program on the remote machine (playing the role of a server) would accept data through a socket from the clients, and would write the files itself.. without need of web servers.
    You can use a tomcat server, and use a servlet, again to accept data and write the files itself.
    ..or?
